Fun 9 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 13, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Denoon Park is a fun, kind of short 9 hole course near a school that does things very well for only being 9 holes.

1) Basics: all very well done. Nice, level concrete teepads that are plenty big for the distances you'll be tossing, new red coated Mach 3s, and ample trash cans/benches.

2) Hole mix: Pretty good for a 9er. Woodsy holes early, open prairie type holes late, good mix of left and right basket placements. 2 basket locations a hole (though they were the same pins both times I played several months apart).

3) Upkeep: Very good. Pretty clear, well defined fairways (aside from one hole, see a note in the cons), and potential overgrowth in the fairways were scuttled by heavy use of wood chips.

4) Design: There's a school nearby, several walking paths, and a playground close to the end of the course that the holes did a good job of steering clear of. You'll have to really shank one to get anywhere near other park uses.

Cons:

Not too many, all things considered. Only a few nitpicks.

1) The last 5 holes are prairie style, and I'm not docking the course for having prairie grass, though that is kind of a pain to look for discs in. Hole 8 though, wasn't mowed all that well...one straightforward strip, the basket is off to the left, straight up in the tall grass. Wish they would have at least mowed around the basket...you can park a shot 10' away and still spend some time looking for your disc.

2) Length...not sure the space really allows for it, but there's only one hole (5) longer than about 250' or so...some more length on a few of the holes would have been nice.

3) Bugs: Probably a structural issue, but bring bug spray.

4) Hole to hole transitions: I'd download or print off a map if you've never played here. 4 to 5 is a bit of a hike, but is still pretty intuitive, it's after 7 where it gets kind of janky. It's easy to assume to go to 9's tee from the end of 7, but 8 is actually past the playground, and you have to kind of backtrack from 8's basket to get to 9's tee.

Other Thoughts:

Denoon does things pretty damn well for a 9 holer. A 3 is about as good as I'll ever rate a 9er, unless it's absolutely stellar in every way, and Denoon falls a touch short, but this is a course I absolutely recommend for an area player to check out, and if you're in the area from out of town, to make a stop if you're playing some of the wealth of great courses in the Milwaukee area.

This city has a fantastic disc golf scene, and Denoon is a wonderful new addition to it. We're seriously spoiled here.

The Woodchip Relocation Project 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.491 Rating) An elegant nine hole course with a mix of heavily wooded and prairie style holes.
- RAW BEAUTY - After playing nothing but park style courses on a November road trip to Wisconsin, it was a relief to finally stumble onto a layout with some charm to it. Several fully wooded holes and only a few man-made structures in view. Hole (4) was my personal favorite being a slight down shot threw a gap and hooking to the left. I thought the early holes out-shined than the latter holes, but regardless, the course was a delight to walk and throw start to finish.
- BASICS - Baskets, tees and navigation are all done well enough. The baskets are pretty looking red powder coated MachIIIs. The tees are concrete and measure 5 feet by 10 feet. The tee signs are attractive and show all the necessary info except next tee direction. The baskets have the typical large numbered placard on top.
- FUN FACTOR - The course has a carefree relaxed feel to it. It's more technical than long as the hole distances are Recreational length. Aces can be had by Novice players on a couple pin placements. The hazards are limited to overgrowth and prairie grasses, but the fairways are generally wide. Although a younger course, I'd bet there's nice local scene.
- QUICK PLAY - I got in and out in 25 minutes. Figure a group of 4, twice thru, at an hour and 45 minutes.
- DESIGN - A well executed design. The layout finds the perfect middle ground between too easy and too hard for newer players. Every shot has simple, but well thought-out obstacles in or along the path of play. The optimal angle for attack also varies from hole to hole. In my early days I would have been at this course every day.

Cons:

A solid 9 course with only preferential issues.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - The course felt perfect for players rated between 800 and 875. Intermediate level players and above will be underwhelmed by the difficulty presented. I could see some Advanced players averaging 7 down. Not to say that higher skilled played won't enjoy the course, it just may not be their ideal course, especially if they enjoy demanding layouts.
- PRAIRIE GRASS - The holes go more and more prairie style starting on hole (5). Discs are going to get swallowed up by this stuff and so there's going to be some extended searches.
- UNIQUENESS - Better than most 9 hole courses, but less than a typical 18 hole course. I liked the mix of hole types, but the wooded ones were all in the beginning and ending holes are nearly all open with tall prairie grass. The hole distance variation is minimal, upper 100s to mid 300s. All par 3s, water is limited to likely dry headwater creeks and elevation maxes out at perhaps 20 feet on any one hole.
- LAYOUT FLOW - A few longer than normal transitions than I was expecting. I had to check my downloaded map 3 times. After (1), (4) and (7). Honestly just a ticky tack issue
- CHARACTER - I define character as physical things on a course that scream "I'm a disc golf course." This is a newer course, so it just doesn't have all the comfort touches yet. It would be great to see some more seating, alternate tees, a community board with course map and a finishing shelter with picnic tables. A good start so far, and it would not surprise me if my above noted missing items get added in the next year or two.

Other Thoughts:

Denoon to me, struck all the right chords. It's the perfect course for Recreational and Novice level players to have a fun relaxing round after a day's work. Not destination level worthy, but players that live in the Milwaukee area should come check it out at some point. Denoon is the 7th nine hole course with one set of tees that I have given a score above a 2.25. I don't subtract that much for 9 holers (0.175 points to be exact) it's just that nine hole course are generally shorter hole to hole, have adjacency issues and lack the infrastructure budget enjoyed by the average 18 hole course. Denoon only has the shorter hole to hole preferential issue.
- WOODCHIPS - Seriously, where did they get the truckloads woodchips? Entire fairways 50 feet wide were covered in woodchips. Every hole probably had at least one truckload worth. Woodchips make no influence on my ratings, but my gosh I've never seen this much on one course, regardless of size.
- NAVIGATION - Its satisfactory. As noted above, I had to check my map several times. The course needs more directional cues between holes. The downloaded map got me thru and there are some intuitive pathways, so it wasn't so bad.

Pros:

it has tee pads and baskets

Cons:

zero challenge

Other Thoughts:

I understand that there is a school nearby and it is supposed to be a beginner friendly course for the kids who attend school there to use. To be honest if i was a middle schooler and this was my introduction to disc golf i would think that disc golf is pretty lame. Not sure if there is an actual design that was used here or the kids from said school had a class project to install the course.
They have obviously cut down almost all trees except a few toothpick dying stragglers and removed all brush that defines a fairway and covered everything with woodchips so if you mess up your 200' throw you don't lose your disc..
this also removes any kind of enjoyment you would normally get from just walking in nature if you are not so great at disc golf. They did however leave the 5' thistle within 15' of the baskets.

This course has been made so easy and ugly that it is not even fun.

Time spent playing it could be used driving to a good course and having more fun driving. Will not go back.

Nice 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Haven't played in 5 or 6 years. My brother told me about this park and I thought, should be easy. Shot a 0, not bad for 1st time out. Reminds me of early Vally View days. Lol

Cons:

Listen when others say. Bring bug spray and you need to pay attention. Looks like you could lose a disc easy

Other Thoughts:

Will go back!

Pros:

Denoon dgc is set up in a nice, quiet little park and with the exception of a walking trail is disc golf exclusive. There are concrete tee pads on every hole. These are all good sized and grip nicely. One pad per hole. The baskets are brand new Mach III's that are in awesome shape and catch great. There is a solid mix of left, right and straight shots for being only nine holes. The first 4 holes play in a wooded section of the park with the next five being mostly open with a tree here or there to contend with. Hole 9 plays as an island hole which is a nice little touch to spice up an otherwise pretty bland hole. The tee signs here are pretty awesome. They have the hole #, par, a basic hole layout, both pin distances and they have a spot to insert a bolt to designate which pin position is in play. This is an awesome touch. The course is free to play and will probably hardly if ever be busy.

Cons:

The last four holes are kind of bland. The wood chips are nice for sure, but man did they load them on holes 2,3 and 5. Almost excessively so. They'll thin out soon but man did they lay them on thick. With that being said they should've used some in between hole 6 and 7 since it gets pretty wet there.

Other Thoughts:

Not a destination course by any means but worth a round or two if you're nearby. This would be a nice warm up course for nearby valley view. Plays quickly, a round can be played in about a half an hour.

Nice little course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 9, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course has nice tee pads and great baskets. I really like the red baskets, they are very easy to spot. Plus there are lots of benches and garbage cans. There is even a practice basket.

The course is on land that isn't good for any activity other than disc golf and the designer has done a pretty good job of making a nice course that works around the marshy wet areas. The design and course work makes for some really nice looking holes, though I do wish they were a little longer.

The course doesn't really interact with other park activities. Besides some boaters in the parking lot and a small play ground the only people you see are going to be disc golfers. I am a big fan of that.

Overall this is a fun disc golf course. I planned to play 2 rounds but I ended up playing 3 because I was enjoying the course. I can see lots of people enjoying this course.

Cons:

The big con for this course is length. As I write this review the course is set up in all shorts with an average length of ~216 feet(the all long layout will bump that up to 276 feet.) I played my rounds with only a putter and was easily reaching the basket on every hole but 5. In the all short layout 4 of the 9 holes are just ~200 foot line drives which I don't find to be that hard of a shot. It would have been nice if the course required more shot shaping(I am hoping that the long positions will require more shot shaping.)

Some of the long pin locations are quite close to the short ones, hole 4 for example. When you have multiple pin locations I like to see them far apart ideally forcing you to throw a different line or a much further shot.

Not a huge con, but still a con, is that it is a little hard to find the 1st tee. Another small con is the walk from 7 to 8, but it is an easy fix with a next tee sign.

Other Thoughts:

I played the course the day after the baskets went in so the course is brand new and still a little "raw," and I believe that they are still working on the course, hole 1 could use some wood chips. As of right now the rough is brutal in places, and just really bad in other places. If you don't keep your throws on the fairway there is a very good chance you are going to lose your disc, or at least spend a bit of time looking. The marsh on hole 7 looks like it will eat discs if you throw into it.

To me this course falls into a weird skill level. Good players will probably find it too easy but beginner/rec players are going to be punished(lost discs or lots of looking) when they have bad throws. I will be keeping an eye out to see when the course gets put in all the long positions and I will replay it to see how that changes the way the course plays.

For a rating I am going to go with 2.5, that might be a little generous, but I think there potential for the course to play better once the longer pin positions start getting used. If the long pins play well and the course gets a little more finishing work done I could see pushing that up to a 3.0.

Final thought- I had fun playing this course and I will be back to play it again.

UPDATE: I have now played most of the long positions, I still have to play 1 long. A few of the longs are a nice change over the shorts, hole 5 and 6 being the stand outs. Some of the longs are a little too similar to the shorts so hopefully the park will just leave them in the long positions, specifically holes 7,8, and 9. If it was up to me my preferred layout would be 1 short, 2 short, 3 long, 4 short, 5 long, 6 long, 7 long, 8 long, 9 long. But really I would be ok with them just putting them all in the long positions and leaving them there.

Nice 9 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course located in denoon park uses really good features aswell as scenic holes. Holes vary in length. The Mach 3 baskets are painted red and very easy to see. The tee signs are detailed and even have a little map for the hole, which shows the A and B locations, which every hole has. The way the course is maintained is beautiful, there is mulch along the entire fairway of each hole and the ob is trimmed well.

Cons:

Hole one is a little hard to find, it's down the road a bit and turn left, you'll see the sign. Hole 9 is right next to 8 and could be confusing, but read the map you'll be fine. The OB on the left side of hole 4 is pretty nasty if you launch a disc in there, you most likely won't get it back as the plants are super thick and have thorns.

Other Thoughts:

It's a 9 hole course that is simple to play, most people will enjoy this course no matter the skill level, hole 9 has the option to be played as an island type hole. I really like this course as it is in my home town, being in denoon park by the middle school, they will probably make a use of it aswell.
