Nature Park redefines 9 hole courses

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Dual tees and dual baskets on every hole. Tees are in good shape, some were a little small and the baskets are in good shape. It looks like both tees can play to either basket, so 4 ways to play every hole.
Great use of the elevation available in the park, it starts with a grassy ravine you have to cross on #1, then 2 downhillers (3 and 7), 3 uphillers (4,8 and 9), one with both (6), its laid out very well to give you all types of shots.
Nice variety of vegetation to traverse also, a few tunnels shots, scattered trees and a few open shots as well.
Four Par 4s on this 9 hole course, including the very challenging #9.
Nice restroom and parking at the start. The Nature park also contains some mountain bike terrain and trails.

Cons:

The tee signs have either not weathered well, or have been vandalized. With the Par 4s on the course, this required a walk up the fairway on a few of them. Hopefully they can be replaced with something more permanent.
The grass was a little long the day I was there, but like I have said before on several Central FL courses, they had a couple of storms come through during the year, so maintenance probably had other priorities.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice facilities as you pull into the park, although a small parking lot. The mountain biking terrain area was the first thing I noticed, constructed hills and jumps to test your mettle. A short walk past the playground and practice basket brings you to the first tee.
The course starts out casual enough with #1 and #2, but then you come to probably the signature 3rd hole. With some thick woods (and OB ?) down the right, keep it straight down the largest elevation change on the course to the Gold basket, comfortably in front of a neighborhood lake. A beautiful hole and a chance to let it fly 270'/335' on this Par 3.
#4 then goes back up the hill then it flattens out and a long way back to the Gold basket on the first Par 4.
Most of the Red baskets are off to one side of the fairway, so you shouldn't have to worry about hitting them, but on #7, the fairways start out straight, then the Red basket is down one path to the right and the Gold requires you to hit another gap and go left and further back.
As I have mentioned in other reviews, I love a tough, challenging finishing hole and #9 delivers. The tee shots are tunnels out and uphill to a widening fairway. A picket line of large trees to avoid, then across the grassy ravine and slightly uphill to the basket guarded by a couple of large, old growth trees with large branches. Two good shots are required to birdie on the Gold basket at 400'/430'.
For Intermediate players, there are two reasonable options at Nature Park, Short to Gold and Long to Red, so 18 mostly unique holes to play, and probably one of the better workouts in Central FL.
I don't believe I have given very many 4.0 ratings to 9 hole courses, but I can see why this one is rated so highly. Variety, elevation and several Par 4s.

This course represents the closest Mount Dora comes to mountainous terrain. It's enough to add a dimension to your game.

The Little Course that Could 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 3, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Relatively easy to navigate despite pretty poor overall signage.
-Elevation for days which is huge in Florida
-Nice little playground and bathrooms at the front of the park if you have family coming with.
-There's a super beginner friendly 9 hole course literally a mile or so up the road if you really need an mix of 18 holes
-Good scenic fairways and nice view of the lake even though it barely comes into play from a hazard standpoint
-Great cement tee pads. Some could be a little more flush to the ground but unless you have a ridiculous run up will suffice for most players.

Cons:

-Only 9 holes. Fine for someone in a pinch but this is the only thing keeping it from getting a higher score from me. There's not really land for it but I could imagine with 9 more holes this course would be a 4-4.5.
-Many of the long teepads have zero signage. The signage that is available is crude and questionable in terms of reliability. Though minor they don't provide "par" either. Really just hunting for negatives at this point.
-There is a mountain bike trail which plays around some of the course and cuts between a few holes (none THROUGH actual fairways though).

Other Thoughts:

This course provides something you don't get on hardly any other course in Florida... ELEVATION! For 9 holes on the property available it does an excellent job of weaving in and out to provide a solid challenge and help Florida golfers learn how to play with elevation change. The fairways are fair but at least playing from the longs to the longs demand a lot of the player. This is the type of course that I could definitely see being picked apart by your elite level pros but for everyone else it's going to be a good challange. I played this course AFTER playing PPP. After exhausting myself there I can attest even fresh this is probably one of the best and most challenging 9 hole courses I've ever played. If there were enough land for 18 holes this course could be easily the top course in the Orlando (extended) area. I felt challenged on every single hole with the emphasis being squarely on accuracy even on the longer holes. It doesn't matter if you can throw 450 if you can't land in the middle of a 40 ft fairway.

One thing to be mindful of as brought up by many others is the Mountain bike scene. No less than a dozen or more were on the trails as I played and legit 2 guys came barreling down 7s fairway (well away from their designated trail) as I was preparing to putt and nearly took out my dog. Be VERY cautious of them while playing but by all means play nice. They have their own areas which the course does NOT impede on other than asking you to pass once or twice, so you shouldn't have a problem throwing.

Some fresh tee signs and "next tee" arrows on the basket would make navigation a bit easier. This would also up the rating imho.

All and all I don't usually play 9 hole courses unless they are convenient. I played this course AFTER PPP and it showed in my performance as I was already spent. I absolutely plan to play "Lincoln Ave" which is literally a Roc throw away but just didn't have time or energy today for a 3rd course.

Full disclosure I ONLY played longs to longs so I can't really speak for the shorter pads or red baskets.

Great Course For All To Enjoy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

I never give a 9 hole course a 3.5 rating , but Nature Park Disc Golf Course in Mt. Dora makes it hard to give anything lower . The park itself is a multi use facility that is shared by walkers , shares a nice children's playground , and also has mountain biking . Nature Park was mowed and clean and the upkeep looks good . Bathrooms are located near the park entrance next to the parking lot . Make sure you get here at an off peak time if you can . The parking lot seems to only hold about 12 cars . There is a putting practice basket on the right side of the parking lot , the start of the course is on the left . The course ? It features 2 good sized cement tee pads per hole , and 2 fairly new Discatcher baskets , the red basket being in the short position and the yellow banded basket in the long and harder position . The pads are not always just for length , but positioned for a different look to the hole . Mixing and matching the tee pads and baskets for 4 possible options per hole works well for many reasons . One is that if you have groups of varying abilities , each can tee off from where they are comfortable with . Another is that a newbie or casual player , can start off in the short positions and eventually work his way up to the very competitive pro gold/blue tees/baskets . The signage is pretty good with hole # , par , distance from all of the positions and flight path . Each sign is set on a white post for the short hole and a blue post for the longer , which is a nice feature that keeps you from walking to the wrong tee . There are NEXT TEE signs at the bottoms of at least one ( mostly the red ) of the baskets which helps with navigation . I never looked at the map once . The elevation here is great for a Florida course . It seems like most of the holes are tilted down or up , with the bulk of the elevation being on holes 2 through 6 . The fun factor here is good . For a park course you get some fair but sometime tight lines . The Course design is one of the best I have seen for a 9 hole course and no real overlapping where you could be hit with a casual's disc . Several strong holes on the course . It starts you off with a 345' ( from the longs fairly level hole . #4 starts uphill to where it levels off into a grove , the red pin at the top of the hill and the yellow being further down to the right ( 580' from the golds ) . #6 plays uphill for your drive with tree/brushline to your right and brush to the let , with some smaller trees in the middle , then going back down a slope to the red basket on the right and the yellow in the middle of a green , 494' from the longs . #7 , is slightly downhill shorter hole where midway in the fairway it splits , you have to choose the red pin on the right or the yellow to the left . #8 is your dogleg hole going right to left at about 400' from the golds . The red basket dips to the left much earlier . #9 is a good fairly straight shot ( 430' ) that leads you out of a tighter tunnel to the open near the playground . Signature hole : #3 , a nice downhill sloping tee shot ( 335' ) to the lake . The red pin sits to the left of the lake far away from the water . The yellow basket sits pretty close to the water , but you have to overthrow by about 20' or so to dunk your disc . I heard someone say that the original hole design had the long basket sitting near the water's edge , but the parks dept. didn't want anyone reaching or wading for their discs . For being less than 2 years old , this course is fully broken in and a pleasure to play .

Cons:

Fist and most important , Safety . Park users and sometimes their dogs do walk along the course and can through your tunnel shots or into the fairways . Also bike trails are next to the course and sometimes share ground .Please be mindful and courteous , and even have a spotter or yell fore if throwing in a blind spot . Other than that , maybe the parking lot could be bigger , the course was 18 holes , no real trash cans . Carry out what you carry in . Disc risk : minimal , but still there if you ricochet off a tree in a blind spot ( the rough can be high in the summer ), or catch one up in the tree .

Other Thoughts:

One of the best 9 hole courses I have ever been on . A good scenic park with some good length ( 3565' for the golds ) , superior course design . The city spared no expense putting in 2 baskets and 2 cement tee pads along with the signage . I am going to bring back the ideas of the twin tee pads and 2 baskets to the Cincinnati area . Only about 35 minutes northwest of Orlando , this course is about a must play . My recommendation: A great park and course for everyone from the newbie , family , casual , intermediate , to the pro . As for the course bagger , you get a twofer , as the Lincoln Ave Park West 9 hole course is less than a half mile away . If you play another 9 hole course in central Florida , Play This One !!!. Thanks , Mt Dora Parks and Rec , for making this course happen and allowing me to play it .

Possibly The Best Nine Hole Course That I Have Played 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 20, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Yes, Virginia, there are hills in Central Florida. And this course is full of them. The course also features an awesome tree canopy, well-designed holes, and excellent concrete tees with adequate tee signage and next tee signs. Generally, two sets of tees and two baskets per hole make for many ways to play this course. And, this course is fun to play! The fairways were mowed tight with only a couple of pockets of denser rough. No disc losses were reported! The course is pretty scenic and has a cool chill vibe to it.

Cons:

Hard to find any flaws here. I could nitpick and say that the course could use a couple of trash cans on it. Although the signage was adequate, it seemed somewhat temporary and hopefully better signage is coming in the future.

The course is intertwined with what appeared to be some very cool well-used mountain bike trails with insane ramps and natural vertical drops. Wasn't really a con though as everyone seemed to know and stay in their respected areas. Just be aware as they might go zooming by occasionally.

Other Thoughts:

Everyone in my group loved this course. It is one of the top nine-hole courses in Florida and beyond in my opinion. It's beautiful and a blast to play!

Concrete is complete! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Most importantly - ALL the concrete pads are finished and done very well!!

It is great how different it plays based on the tee and basket combination. When we get there late close to dark, take the shortest combination and it will not take long. Take the longest, and it will really challenge you.

The elevation change is excellent and challenging. I am hoping it will make me better at disc golf.

Cons:

Watch out for the off-road bikers as you go through the course. This is not a big issue - just be aware!

A couple of times, there were random people walking through the course (not playing), as well as bikes off the trail.

Other Thoughts:

There is a nice playground for the kids.

Elevation in Florida! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice variety of shots. Beautiful property. Well laid out and lots of elevation. I think it has the most elevation of any permanent course in FL. Each hole has 2 fantastic baskets and short and long tee pads which lets you play each hole 4 different ways.
Scenic course with some real picturesque holes. Fun for all levels. Little risk of losing any discs. Some nice par fours.

Cons:

Right now only about half the holes have concrete pads and the temp pads are on pretty steep inclines which makes footing and run up difficult.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course for all skill levels, long to long plays tough for 1000 rated players and the short to short is good for those just starting. Great piece of land w very good design. Has bathrooms near the parking lot. Once all concrete is in, this will rate higher.

Very Nice Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I personally really enjoyed this course for its unique layout given the property it is on. I felt this area of land is spot on for a semi challenging 9-hole layout. When you hear "9-hole course" you almost immediately think its going to be smaller in size but that really isn't the case here...the holes are all decently sized with several playable options. Each hole has 2 baskets and 2 tee pads which provides great variety to each hole allowing you to play potentially 36 combinations. I am a big fan of courses with any kind of elevation and this course is a rare treat for a FL course...pretty much every hole involves some kind of elevation which was a pleasant surprise. I especially loved hole 3 which to me is the signature hole of the course playing downhill to the lake. The course overall is on just a beautiful piece of property in general and is truly a nice gem for the disc golfers of Mt Dora. You can really tell that the golfers around here take pride in the upkeep of their courses. It feels like you are stepping out of the normal Florida terrain and playing somewhere a bit more north which is very refreshing for this area. Restroom access is right by the parking area which is another convenient feature of the course.

Cons:

There is very little negative thoughts I have about this course other than I wish there was more of it. I would love to see more land cleared and more holes added to make it a fully functioning 18 hole layout. At a full 18 holes with the same characteristics it has now, it would be by far my favorite course within a 100 miles of my home (Daytona Beach). Not that the multiple tees & Pins don't help that but I like a full 18 hole course for official purposes, tournament use...etc. Parking was a little lacking even though I was by myself but I really only counted about 10-12 parking spaces so that would pose an issue if a big group were to venture here to play.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I can't say enough good things about this course. I decided to drive over from Daytona to check out the 2 Mt Dora courses on a random Monday off and I am glad I did...I usually don't travel far to play 9 hole courses but this one as well as Lincoln Ave as a warm up were definitely worth the drive over for the day. If you are in the Central Florida area and appreciate very nice attention to detail and upkeep for disc golf courses you should come check this place out.

More than just 9 Holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Brand New! Beautiful shiny new baskets.
- Florida course with some elevation challenges. 2 uphill drives (#6 and #4. #9 has got some hill in it too) as well as 3 downhill drives (#3, #5, and #7)
- Length. Playing Long Tees to Long Baskets makes for a solid 9 holes with 4 par 4s.
- Options. 36 different holes to play. Two pads and two baskets on every hole make this course play much different than your usual nine hole course. Not up for long holes? Play short to short or long to short or even short to long! I personally really enjoy short to long.
- Not just longer tees and baskets. Many of the different tee/basket options really do work to create very different holes.
- Hole #3 - Really one of the prettiest drives I've ever played. A downhill shot with trees to contend with, but not so many that you can enjoy the view of the lake from the pad.
- The city mows the property frequently and is extending into the areas that the new course has created.
- Great line options on nearly every hole. Most holes don't restrict you to a backhand or forehand line as some courses will, but at the same time the lines are not wide open, which also makes this course great for practicing lines.
- Great signage that makes navigating the course easy-peasy.
- Shaded tee pads. As summer approaches I was happy to find nearly all of the tees are in the refuge of shade.
- Nice restrooms on site.

Cons:

- Not entirely finished. There are rubber tee pads at the time of this writing (5/14/18) but there will be concrete pads installed in a few months.
- Only 9 holes. But with the options of long and short tees/baskets its hard to feel that this is just another 9 hole course.

Other Thoughts:

- The park is on city property with a playground at the start, as well as a mountain biking trail that crosses the path to hole #7. As a local who wishes to play this course for years to come, I'd hope that everyone is courteous to those using the playground and mindful when near the bike trail.

close to Lincoln DG park and has better restrooms. Only played once but loved it. Nice water hazard on hole 4 or 5 I think and it was a beautiful look at the lake.

Other Thoughts:

For Floridains who are not used to hills, this one has a few hills to traverse. Nothing terrrible but just as a note. Nothing bad to say it was a great course. I drive 1 1/2 hrs to play there and will continue to do so.

Incomplete, but fairly sweet 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 5, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nicely manicured grassy areas mixed with oak groves and great woodsy areas with a fair share of central Florida topography, which comes into play on every fairway.
Dual concrete tees (White & Blue) and Dual Baskets (Red & Yellow/Gold Innova DISCatcher 28s). So every fairway has 4 options!! This allows for 4 distinct levels of play at any given time. I think this is a very versatile option for any course with thoughtful (dual) tee and pin positions.
Playground and restrooms on site. Parking lot went from a dozen spots to nearly 30!
2.5 blocks from Lincoln Avenue (entry-level) disc golf course, which is fun and also a part of the Lake County Disc Golf Trail.

Cons:

Only 9-holes... but 36 options!!
This is a mixed use park. Bikes and pedestrians will ALWAYS have right-of-way!
Bike Paths and beyond will ALWAYS be Out of Bounds. NEVER throw across a bike trail... EVER!
The disc golf fairways and the bike trails do not intersect (transition walks do) but that doesn't mean that the bikers won't deviate from their designated trails... sometimes using the #7 tee pads as jump ramps. The City erected fences in front of the tees to keep the bikers from jumping off the tees @ #7.

Other Thoughts:

9th Avenue park (aka: "Nature Park") dgc in Mt Dora, FL is one of the newest Hosfeld-designed 9-hole course on the Lake County Disc Golf Trail. Set in a former citrus grove, now oak grove, (along with pecans, camphor and a few orange trees) the course begins just beyond the practice basket and is separated from the playground by a thick, healthy row of oaks. The White tee fairway has two rows of thick oaks between it and the playground.
Hole 1s Blue and White tees run down parallel alleys to a more open area, Red basket is just beyond a dry retention area. Gold basket beyond the retention and into the oaken alley.
#2 fairway has a slight rise, followed by a slight dip. The Blue to Gold fairway requires a RHBH LtoR flex or an amazing counter spin hyzer-flip, to reach the pin, which has a nice green in the middle of the oaks.
#3 is unquestionably the signature hole in this nature park, with a fairway sloping down to Lake Franklin. The Red pin falls plenty short of the water. The Gold pin just close enough to the water to warrant caution from the tee.
#4 is the 1st of 4 par 4s on 9AP. The #4 fairway climbs the hill, away from Lake Franklin and back onto the rise, where the Red pin lies, and beyond into the groves where the grassy Gold pin area slopes gently away to the right.
#5s Blue tee rests just behind a beautiful oaken arch and canopy. The first 100' of the fairway rises slowly, then drops away slowly on the other side. An aggressive shot will likely have to stay low over the crest of the hill.
#6 goes up a steep hill and back down semi-steeply for another par 4 on a grassy green. The walk to #7 crosses 2 bikes trails. HEADS UP!! LOOK LEFT!
#7 has a fun downhill Y-shaped fairway Red pin to the right and Gold pin to the left, with a nice patch of woods to fill in the Y at the split.
#8 is only 401' from Blue to Gold but the uphill and the dogleg make for a challenging par 4, requiring placement-over-power. Though power with placement can earn you an eagle attempt at the Red pin. The gold pin usually requires more than a putter on your 2nd shot.
The walk from #8 to #9 goes between two mountain bike trails. Two fences will serve to keep feet and wheels on their respective trails. The 8-9 walk also crosses another bike trail. HEADS UP!! LOOK RIGHT!
#9 Blue and White fairways both punch out of the woods into their respective parallel fairways. Both Blue & White fairways exit the woods just before going over the dry retention area (which I'm told might be marked as OB during future tournaments)
I think the 9th Ave dgc is elegant in its simplicity and fairly efficient in its implementation. Fairly intuitive navigation and plenty of directional arrows where there are walks. You have the chance to play finesse disc golf or open up a bit.
A perfect counter-point to the entry level Lincoln Avenue park dgc, a mere 2.5 blocks away.
