When I am seeking new courses to visit I lean heavily on DGCR reviews, and usually try to focus on the ones rated 3.5+. My ratings are sometimes on the high side, because I mostly focus on the quality of the holes over the amenities. Concrete pads, good signage, multiple tees/pins are all nice, but not totally necessary for a phenomenal course. I give more importance to layout of tee and pin placement relative to landscape features. Enjoy good use of big elevation changes, fairways that are densely wooded, and playing over or near water.
I am over 375 courses played in 41 states now. I have played the most courses in Kansas, followed by Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas and Missouri. My ultimate goal is to play in all 50 states, and the next goal is reaching double digits in as many states as I can. Of course I daydream about visiting all of the highest rated courses, as well as ones in other countries.
Respect to Tim G. and all of the members and reviewers on this site who take time to give their insight in order to help others enjoy the game more.
