When I was in college getting my engineering physics degree, I developed an excel spreadsheet to assist me in objectively rating courses. I began by listing all of the factors I wanted to take into account for rating courses and weighting each of them on importance (3 being the most important). The factors and weighting I take into account are as follows.

Condition of Baskets, tees (half to each) 1.5
Overall comfort level while playing (benches? bathrooms? water fountain? Fairways mowed? Not worried about hitting bystanders?) 1.5
Course maintenance (amenities kept up? General mowing? Baskets/Tees in good shape? Signage kept up? Clean?) 1.25
Navigation between holes 0.75
Navigation on the actual holes 1.5
Amount of elevation present/Use of elevation 3
Use of obstacles (How good is the course compared to how good a course in the same area could be?) 2.5
How easy it is to find discs 1.5
Variety of distances 3
variety of shot paths 3
Variety of openness on shots 3
Decisionmaking required 1.5
Quality of Alternate hole positions 2.5
Overall challenge of the course 1.5
Ability to challenge all levels without being impossible 1.5

For each of these factors I rate the course 0 through 10. I put these values into a formula which outputs an overall rating value. These rating values for each category are added up and the total (rounded to the nearest half disc) is the rating I give.

For my fellow math geeks, the formula I use for each is (-2.5cos(pi*R/10)+2.5)*W

where R is the 0-10 rating for each category and W is the importance weighting.


A more qualitative view of my ratings would be...

5 - Destination course, anyone who hasn't played this course is missing out
4.5 - Phenomenal course, a must play if in the area
4.0 - A course I would frequent if I lived in the area and would recommend to out of staters
3.5 - This course would be part of my regular rotation if I were local, worth a play if you're out of state and have time
3.0 - I'd play here every now and then for variety if local
2.5 - I would have to be doing something else that happened to be near this course to play it again. Potentially a "warm-up" course
2.0 - Probably won't play again unless it's in my backyard
1.5 - Won't be back
1.0 - A regularly mowed field with 9 tees/markers and 9 baskets and no obstacles
0.5 - Same as 1.0 but overgrown/missing baskets or tees
0.0 - I'm actually not sure this is a disc golf course
