Choose Your Own Adventure 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'll be creative here as possible, like I was when I tried to mentally come up with the course I was playing. There are baskets, they are in the ground, there is room to throw on some of the holes, but not much else. No pads, maps on site, signs, indicators as to where to start or where the course even is. Asked at the gym if there was a starting point or map but the maintenance person & another staff member had no idea.

Most of the baskets are away from areas where you'd encounter safety issues and have areas to throw & just make up your course. There was one person filming themselves throwing in the middle of the track, which was the busiest area. So crowds won't be a problem.

You can get in touch with your inner course designer like I did & just pick where you want the hole to start, your par, and even what order you play the holes in as there's nothing to say otherwise.

With that being the case I either had 8 aces when I was practicing a putt at each hole or I shot 16 over when I threw from a distance, who's to say really?

Parking is free, the grass wasn't too high, & the only trash I saw was in the woods behind hole 1 or 7 or hole 3.14.

Definitely look at the aerial map here to at least give you an idea as to what they had in mind, but its of minimal help.

Cons:

This is a disc golf course if you'd consider a field with gopher holes a ball golf course or like when you were kids and made up other sports field with whatever random stuff you had lying around. No signs, no tee pads, not even areas where the grass has been worn away with a number near it, nothing.

Safety can be an issue especially for a couple of holes (1-3?), I guess it would depend on where you threw from.

Other Thoughts:

The land is there & if you had some 4x4s, gravel, & asked some art students to paint you a map on some plywood you could actually have a decent course for not much money or labor. The way it is though its just some random baskets in fields you're throwing at, so I don't know if this could even be considered a course. We played it since a member of our family was getting a COVID shot in the gym, so we were going to be there anyway.

Peculiarly Unenjoyable 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

A lengthy and rolling course on a college campus.

-Scenery: I was surprised at how interesting (though not beautiful) the scenery was. (2) is a unique experience throwing into the middle of a running track, (3) goes across a wide open field (pretty if there are picturesque clouds), (5) can lead to interesting lies against the greenhouse, and (7) plays over a large pond, for example. I encountered deer and a heron during my round.

-Variety of Length: Again, pretty impressive for a college course. There are two par 4's and one par 5. Distances aren't posted, but I would estimate that they vary from 200 ft to 900 ft.

-Shot Selection: Not dreadful. There's some challenge with trees on (1) and (9), a vicious patch of rough to throw over on (4), many artificial obstacles on (6), and the water carry (7).

Cons:

Despite the variety, somehow this course is designed so that it is noticeably un-fun.

-Amenities: No tee pads, or rather no tee markings whatsoever, is a major problem. The baskets are terrible, and though I personally only experienced one questionable spit out, I imagine the chains dish out undeserved punishment quite often. Those lame baskets are the only amenities out here.

-Navigation: Pretty bad. I read that perhaps there's a course map available inside, but even with UDisc satellite maps I was guessing. Luckily most baskets are visible from the tee--if you choose a good spot to tee off. Again, unmarked tees mean it's virtually impossible to recreate the holes accurately without a GPS. I also had no idea where basket (7) was from the tee until after I'd thrown over the water, and then discovered I had guessed incorrectly about 200 feet right.

-Safety: Major, major safety issues. (1) is mildly unsafe with walking paths exposed to a very overthrown shot. (2) requires throwing straight over a running track that was heavily populated during my early morning appearance. (5) and (6) present a strong possibility for a disc to fly into one of the university buildings, or perhaps even into the locked garden behind the greenhouse. (9) throws back towards the running track, which could be an issue if there's wind.

-Hole Design: Many holes were utterly boring, and one or two had me asking rhetorical questions. (3) is a 900-foot hole with zero obstacles or elevation after the first 150 feet. (5) and (8) also win boringness awards for mostly-flat distance with no obstacles (except for the greenhouse right next to basket (5)). (6) was strange and bizarre. The placement of the basket makes sense from the tee except that there's a building and bleachers blocking the only two reasonable-looking distance lines. Then, once you get all the way down to the basket, it's situated inside some sort of climbing/ropes course.

Other Thoughts:

Bad chains, boring or dangerous holes, and having to guess at the locations of every tee make this course more trouble than it's worth. I was having a very nice disc golf morning until I played this course, and then it just wasn't so cheerful anymore. I could see some of the holes being useful for practice--but then again, any large field with the occasional tree is good for that.

100% Waste of time 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautifully manicured campus.
Located close to I-985 for easy access.

Cons:

9 temp baskets that will rarely/barely catch a golf disc, and probably won't be in the same place twice.
Zero indication of tees or signage.
Hole 2 looked to throw directly over the running track, which had at least 100 people walking/running on it.

Other Thoughts:

UNGG has a beautiful campus, but the disc golf set up is NOT a course. They put out temp baskets (with the hole # plate facing away from tee), but beyond that, despite any map that they may hand out, it is NOT a course. At best, it is 'field-work' with a few scattered targets to aim at
The area looks to be conducive to a nice course, but thus far isn't worth the time it took to pull off the Interstate.
We can only hope that this 'minimal-effort-to-try-it-out" doesn't backfire and turn them away from installing a permanent course.

Keep On Drivin In The Free World 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.238 Rating) A poorly laid out, longer and open campus niner.
- MAINTENANCE - The grass was mowed.

Cons:

A myriad of issues with this course.
- LAYOUT AND DESIGN - One of the most poorly laid out courses I've ever played. Having multiple groups out here is going to cause all sorts of issues. A couple crossing fairways and shared fairway fringes. Baskets and tees are not separated well. Hole (6), a par 4, has issues with both line options. One play is left around a small building a 150 feet straight ahead and then the approach shot crosses a picnic area near the basket area. The alternate line asks discs to basically be bombed and land on tee (7), and then crossing the same picnic area noted for the first option. Hole (9) finished way away from (1) and allows throwers to peg players walking down (3) fairway. As those on (3) try to avoid being nailed from (9), they also have to dodge shots coming from tee (2) sailing overhead. Hole (8) literally finishes on top of a drainage grate with slits large enough to take a disc away permanently, SMH.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - A one dimensional challenge being just long. I was soaked head to toe and had just played the beast that is North Georgia Canopy Tours (Lula), so I was very exhausted. Despite all this, I still shot 4 down. Hole (5) is not 809 feet as indicated on DGCR. According to satellite it's more like 660. I rarely throw 400 feet, yet I parked a dialed down approach shot and made an easy 3. It should be relabeled a par 4.
- NAVIGATION - It says online, that maps can be obtained from the fitness center. Even with a map, navigating this layout will be frustrating. The issue, no tee signage or indication on where the tees are. GMcAtee and I had to guess several times based on either worn grass areas or an unmarked paved surface near where the map had it indicated. Baskets do have numbered placards on top. The course is not cart friendly do to the lake feeding creek crossing on (7). The crossing element was either a small log or 2x, I choose not to remember. It was hard enough to not wipe out without a cart.
- TEES - Horrible. As noted above, not marked. Several I assume are dirt patches.
- CHAINS - Single chain baskets.
- CHARACTER - In addition to poor basics of tees, baskets and navigation, no other extras or amenities.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - An open to lightly wooded layout with numerous manmade features in view the entire time.
- TIME PLAY - Due to the navigational issues and course length, this is not a quickie nine holer. My twosome completed the round in an hour.

Other Thoughts:

UNG Oakwood needs a lot of help. You just shouldn't layout a course with no regards of the built environment and other planned holes. Creating a 660 foot and 900 foot hole are a waste of space if it means you have to jamb the rest of the layout around it. Thankfully the baskets are on wheels and no pads are poured. So there's a chance that someone will respectfully re-lay this one out. In its current state, I'd only give the course a 1.25 if we rated by quarters of a point. Players that have thought about stopping by here on the way to Lula, should keep on driving.
- UNIQUENESS - If I overlook the flaws of crossing fairways and adjacency issues, the variety of the individual holes themselves is around average. Hole (6) is a parallel water play. Hole (7) is a nice looking easy water clear. Hole (3) is a open 900 foot bomber hole. (2) is a decent down shot. There's a nice hole length variety. However, all the holes are open or lightly wooded. Players that like heavily wooded courses won't like this course. Bombers may dig it.

Great for What it Is 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 30, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Excellent course for a beginner like me. Fields are wide open and the grounds are in excellent condition. This is a great course to try out new shots or discs.

Cons:

Only 9 holes and one basket was missing when I played last.

Other Thoughts:

Can't wait for the additional holes.

Temporary/Prototype? Occasional Collegiate? Definitely not a 'Permanent' layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great map given at the reception desk of the currently-under-rennovation sports building

Hole 1 Basket was in position, though no 'pad' visible

Hole 2, 3 8, and 9 baskets were located in a 'cage'

ALL baskets have wheels and can be put in place with minimal physical force, similar to pushing a shopping cart on grass...

Beautiful corner of campus, long shots, over the lake was fun, idea is cool...

*ALL joking aside, I don't mind setting up a course before I play it if that's what the deal is... but for now, I would suggest waiting to play here until the course is either permanent or at least the construction and layout are better refined.

**Read in other thoughts for the X3PO highlight of my night!

Cons:

Where do I start...

Honestly, who put this course on DGCR? It is a prototype at best and a failed attempt at worst.

Basket 1 was in place, but there was no exact pad for it, so we got as close as we could given the master copy of the map we were loaned out, which we returned afterwards.. more on said map later...

Had to personally grab basket 2 as we played the hole from a chain link 'cage' near the track field. found a small red spray paint dot on the concrete near the bathroom we assume matched the map's version of where the pad was, so we threw from there to the guestimate spot where the basket was.

Hole 3 was similar, we found baskets 2, 3, 8 and 9 in that 'cage' and plotted their rough placement, and set about playing while also setting up the course as best we could.....

...

Here I digress, as we did while playing... so, as I had said, we managed to get a map from the facilities in the building closest to the tennis courts. Cool beans, right?! But at that same moment we realized all the baskets had wheels for a base, only 1 was in its place, 4 baskets were available to put out ourselves, and 4 baskets were simply missing. Holes 1 and 3 had NO visible pad location, holes 2 and 7 were assigned to existing concrete slabs (restroom and picnic area, respectively) and holes 4-6/8-9 were SAND. Bloody white sandpits in the middle of the grass... Strange, shotty footing for a monster 800+ foot drive on 5 for sure... So we played 9 holes with mediocre success due to the course design being intentionally mobile and given we were not students at NGU. I DO NOT RECOMMEND driving more than 10 minutes to try this course yourself, hence my changing this to NOT PLAYABLE. I have a friend in the area and I wanted to check it out, so I did... After a round at ERos I considered this a cherry on top either way.

Other Thoughts:

1: Glad I wasn't at work today, disc golf is ALWAYS better than working

2: Interesting concept having mobile baskets.. So there is only 1 outer set of chains, they don't catch anything but a direct shot, but are lightweight and have an H shaped base with 2 wheels on the bottom arms of the H, so as to be pushed (not pulled, like my dumb self) to their locations easily. I put this note here because I honestly don't know if I like that as a Pro or hate it as a Con compared to playing a permanent course. I guess any new course is a new course, and I shouldn't complain but sure enough I still do...

3: Give it time, I am sure they will get it together soon enough, this course just popped up here, wait for a more current review. Also, apparently a cross country race of some kind took place in these fields recently, so maybe they just pulled the baskets and they are soon to return. If so, maybe make that more clear on this website before posting a new course is up and running

4: IF you do end up here, and IF after the frustration of playing a semi-temp 9-hole college course hasn't beat you down by sunset, look up XPO Logistics nearby, its a building full of workers who have apparently set up 3 random baskets in the tall grass behind their employee parking lot, I would assume to play on lunch breaks. If you enjoy new experiences, and random throwing in an overgrown field of confusion, this is the perfect way to finish your day! Trespassing and general idiocy are the most common side affects....

Final thought and reflection for the day.... Luckily they were draining the pond one drives over on hole 7, probably the signature hole of the course.... and we found 3 discs in the mud as the water level was down about 2 ft from normal, and dropping. Nothing better than finding unmarked discs when you are having a rough day at the links!
