Pros:

Nice mix of technical woods holes, a handful of open bombers, and three par 4 holes interspersed throughout the round. Streams marked with white OB stakes wind through the course, and these holes were often the most memorable and challenging (sometimes bordering on diabolical). For example, one of the later woods holes had a guarded basket with a bend in the OB stream wrapping around near circle's edge short, left, and long. Fun hole.

Hole #2 was another favorite hole with water in play. The drive is 350' and slightly downhill, with the OB stream all along the left side. By the time you reach the basket, the stream is within the circle. Risk-reward at its finest, and the stream is shallow enough that disc retrieval should not be a problem.

I also enjoyed hole #3, a 495-foot dogleg right par 4 with an early gap as you cross an OB stream. A right-turning placement shot through the gap leaves a long approach through scattered mature trees. Two accurate throws can get you a look at birdie, but mistakes will be punished. I expect that this hole would provide a different adventure nearly every time you play it.

Yellow-banded baskets were mounted level, caught well, and were easy to spot in the woods. Tees were either poured concrete with a rough, grippy finish, or ground-level turf tees on many of the woods holes. I had no problem with any of the tees.

A bright green "next tee" arrow is mounted on a spoke for each basket, and abundant "next tee" signs aid navigation on the back nine (but not on the front nine - see cons).

Swarms of port-a-pots and trash cans are found near the parking lot. Sturdy benches located throughout the course. Well-constructed bridges and boardwalks convey you across streams and swampy areas.

Cons:

Holes #1 and #4 bring soccer fields into play. The soccer fields were empty on a Friday afternoon, but you might need to skip these holes if the fields were in use. Some of the open holes border walking paths, but it should not be a problem to see approaching pedestrians.

Disc-eating rough in many areas, often quite close to the basket. I spent several frustrating minutes searching for discs that landed in or near the circle. Cleaning up the rough would improve the playing experience during the growing season. This course is still fairly new, so improvements may be in the works.

The front nine needs more "next tee" signs, particularly where multiple paths branch off on the way to the next basket. I had to check the navigation app a few times on the front nine, but the back nine was much better marked.

Improving the tee signs would be very helpful for first-time players here. Hand-painted tee signs are pretty, but often worn or faded and hard to read. On several holes OB streams near the basket are blind from the tee but not clearly marked on the tee signs. This can be a nasty surprise when you think you have thrown a good shot.

There is not much elevation in play, and much of the course runs through low areas near the creek. I played two days after a heavy rain, and there were some mucky spots between holes and occasionally on the fairway. Wear appropriate footwear if you play here when the ground may be wet.

Other Thoughts:

I quite enjoyed playing here, and appreciated the variety of hole designs and challenges. I found the wooded creek holes with tricky OB in play the most memorable. The field holes were more wide open than I prefer, but did add variety to the round. No big uphill or downhill holes, but the course designers did well with the available landscape.

CR Park is a fairly short course, with eight of eighteen holes 250' or less. The three par 4 holes ranged from 470' to 555', and there were two par 3 holes in the 350' range. So there is variety, but the majority of the holes are fairly short and technical. For me this is not a "con", but others may feel differently.

Hole #18 is a 250-foot blind toss over a natural area, with marked OB short of the basket. There is abundant safe landing near the basket and beyond, but you may want to walk this fairway before throwing.

CR Park has one tee and one basket for each hole. I do not know if there are future plans to add tees or baskets.

Easy to combine CR Park with 3 Creeks DGC, a lovely private course only 2 miles away.

Worth playing once and then assessing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Love the plastic next-tee clips on the baskets. Those are amazing.
- Folks have obviously put in some work and care here.
- There're some interesting OB features.

Cons:

A lot of the course winds through what's basically a wetland. So...there's mud and water and a creek that's being beaten up pretty good.

I was glad to be playing in winter. Playing with leafed-out trees would've been frustrating (because of my skill).

Other Thoughts:

There are a couple wide-open, long-distance holes that seem a bit like throwaways. Some of the woods holes are really tight and fun.

It was certainly worth playing once. But I don't know that I'll ever go back.

A Place for Conservative Play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mostly wooded course with some tight lines - but overgrown enough in some places that it might ruin your day

+ Good variety: it starts out open, and although it's primarily working through woods, the layout sprinkles in a few open "relief" holes

+ The wooded holes have well-defined fairways and throwing lines. Some of the gaps are pretty narrow - especially on the back 9 - but the holes tend to be short, so you're not likely to be throwing full power at the gaps

+ Although the course is short, the designers use natural features like creeks, and artificial features like drainage basins and marked OB, to put a premium on placement, accuracy, and knowing how to land your disc. WIld throws and ground action WILL be punished

Cons:

- First, quickly - the signs. They're creative "works of art" that just don't do the job of accurately showing the hole. Some of them are pretty beat up. Others are missing. I admire the craftsmanship, but was thankful that I had uDisc for navigation and a scope for distances

- Second, and most important: there are areas of the course that are really overgrown and will cause all kinds of prolonged searches for discs. In fairness, most of the problem is off the fairways where you "shouldn't" be anyway. It's often behind OB stakes. But an errant throw will have consequences (remember: wild throws and ground action WILL be punished…). There are several holes where it really pays to have a spotter at the dogleg

- #18 is the one hole felt compromised. A path maybe 10' wide has been cut to wind its way through deep overgrowth of grasses and cattails. There's a water hazard in front of the green, but hidden by the tall grasses- so your choices are to try to drop a mid onto the narrow trail (risking OB on both sides), or to go for the basket and hope to clear the OB the entire way. Turns out that the straight shot is the wisest - but you don't see what you're working for a landing zone with until you've walked the entire length of the hole. This is a case where the riskier-looking shot is actually the safer one. Because you really can't see what you're detailing with, #18 could feel "unfair" to the first-timer, but after you've played it once, you know what to expect and how to play it

Other Thoughts:

~ The very best advice I heard was from a local: "play conservative." I disced down on some of the tighter holes, played "placement golf" to avoid the overgrown areas, and really enjoyed the challenges the course presents. The requirements for shot shaping overcame my misgivings about the inconsistent tees and the failing signage. My "3.5" is arguably a little high. I probably like it a little more than I should, because I was able to successfully avoid the overgrowth. But the course passes my test for anything at 3.5 or higher: If I lived closer, there's no doubt I'd play it some more.

C Average CR Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ The course plays throughout a quiet township park with flat fields, alive forests and a stream.
+ Tee pads are long and wide slabs of sturdy raised concrete.
+ There is a practice area and plenty of plastic outhouses to accommodate players.
+ This is the course where I first saw those brightly colored plastic 'next tee clips' attached to the bottom of the baskets-- a clever idea that I hope catches on!
+ Most tee signs are noticeable wooden stakes in the ground with illustrated panels at the top, but...

Cons:

- ...Some of those tee signs are missing, damaged or incorrect.
- Some of those tee pads are lumpy and uneven or just cutouts of turf on the ground.
- The course has no lost disc box that I could see.
- Some of the paths between holes and some fairways still need a lot of work and attention.
- Very little elevation to speak of.

Other Thoughts:

I liked looking at hole2. To my mind it resembled a forbidden path into some haunted woods from a childrens' tale. I guess I liked playing hole3 the most because of its wooded challenge with a creek OB thrown in for good measure. My least favorite was hole10 because of how direct and plain it was.

CR Park still has some kinks to work out. I don't think I'm wrong to suspect that this is still a work-in-progress. Hole8 is strong evidence of that. The fairway trees looked freshly cleared, and I saw hay still on the ground. The fairways of holes6 and 7 were nothing but tall grass and other scraggly undergrowth. And I really wanted to like hole5 with that small gully guarding the basket, but it had the same problem as 6 and 7- not to mention the aggressive rough on either side. Plus, the walk between basket9 and hole10 was particularly perilous. Garbage on the ground and a dangerous arrangement of loose rocks and roots make for an unpleasant time.

But, this course gets some things right, too. I was charmed by the back nine. Those holes weren't particularly grueling or impressive but instead a nice string of woodsy fairways and tunnels to contend with. Hole10 was boring, 17's fairway seriously needed trim, and hole18 was a nasty de-facto tunnel shot out in the open with all of that wild growth on both sides, but I liked the consistency and easy flow of those holes, even if they were all as flat as the rest of the course.

CR is crying out for something more, though. Maybe it's better fairway management. Maybe it's new tee signs to replace the missing/damaged ones (holes1, 7, 8, 9). Truthfully, they could all stand to be replaced once the course is ready for it. Maybe it's safer tee pads to replace the lumpy ones (holes 2, 3, 14).

But don't give up on it. If you are in search of a relaxed place to have a mostly wooded round and don't care too much about perfect presentation, elevation, flawless infrastructure or nailbiting challenges, then CR Park is for you.

Pretty damn good course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 12, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great mix of holes. First 3 are open, but then you go into the woods. Decent signage and tee pads were maintained.

Cons:

Lots of chances of losing a disc during the summer.

Other Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the course was. Unfortunately, it was raining a bit when I arrived there, but since I drove over an hour to get there, I played anyways. I liked the course despite the soggy conditions, so I can imagine it is a beautiful course when the sun is out. Definitely going back.

Good Intermediate Course in Northern MD 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Description:

This course is in a relatively new, large, well-maintained park that has plenty of parking space, copious portable bathrooms, and a huge playground area for those bringing kids along.

Each of the 18 holes has a single tee and single pin position.

The tees are predominately concrete, although as of 10/23/2018 six of the 18 tees (Holes 3, 5, 6, 14, 15, and 17) have not yet been poured, so they are just 2x4 boxes with gravel at the bottom. This proved to be a bit precarious, as you could easily trip on the 2x4's on your run-up.

The baskets are Innova DisCatchers with the yellow top band and no flags for wind reading.

The signage at each tee was basic, but served the general purpose. Par and a small sketch of the hole was on each tee sign. Currently only the Tee 1 sign had distance written on it, although there was space on each sign for a distance, so I'm assuming this will be added eventually.

Next tee signs were sprinkled throughout the course on the walking paths. Navigation was usually straightforward, although occasionally it took a minute or two to find the next tee. There were some long walks between a few of the holes.

Pros:

This course has a mix of open (1, 4, 11, and 18) and wooded holes (all the others) with a mix of distances as well. The wooded holes can be tight, but not overly technical, and make use of doglegs both right and left, as well as a few straight and narrow shots.

Hole 6 incorporates an interesting, if unforeseen, large OB across the entire fairway which essentially makes the green an island.

For a beginner/learner, this course can help teach a lot of good fundamentals and shot placement without being unduly frustrating. For an advanced player the course maintains interest and provides numerous birdie (and a few ace) opportunities.

Cons:

The course is very muddy even after several days without rain. I can only imagine what it will be like in the spring.

The landscape for this course is pretty flat, so there is little in the way of elevation change in play here.

The rough around the fairways can be pretty thick. This should improve as the course gets used more, but lost discs are definitely a possibility here, especially on the front nine.

The course could use some trash cans and benches spread throughout it.

Experienced players might find many of the holes a bit short and bland. While a decent effort was made in designing the course to fit the space, there are no long, multiple-turn fairways or really unique/memorable shots on this course.
