Hidden Gem at Hillview Rec Area 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 3, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+Great looking signs that are pretty accurate.
+Course is in a cool rec area in the Loess Hills of NW Iowa. Lots to do here including camping. Could make a weekend with the family out of this place. Or a nice stop in the middle of the road trip.
+Lots of elevation. This part of Iowa is not flat and it's used well.
+Great variety of hole length. This course will challenge more experienced players but not scare off rec players too badly. It leans more toward the advanced player but not much. Some holes are two shot, strategic type holes.
+Course is not too wooded but not too open either. There are trees to add challenge to the elevation and grass as obstacles.
+Maintenance, cleanliness, and safety of course are all top notch here.
+Nice baskets, no complaints there.

Cons:

-It is a shame that this course is just 9 holes. There is a lot of land here and they could make a truly world class course with what they have to work with. As it is, it is a very fun 9 hole but it could be a true destination. They have thick woods up and down the hill that could easily house another 9+ holes. There is a tubing hill that could be another signature hole for the course.
-This course is in a natural area which could lead to excessive bugs, poison ivy, ticks, etc.
-Might lose a disc here, probably not in the water but in the grass/brush.
-5 has two parallel fairways. Not sure why they mow the left one as it leads to confusion. The sign/tee seem to point down that one but the basket is down the right fairway.

Other Thoughts:

+If this course was 18+ holes, it would be one of my all time favorites. It could easily be done with the land that they have. It might take a fair amount of man hours and/or money to make it happen.
+Best holes:
2- Somewhat of a signature hole with an elevated tee, island style green, and throwing over some water (easy carry).
4- Fun uphill but fairly short shot with a protected green.
9- Gradual downhill. High risk/reward. Ace run but you could blow past it.
+Worst hole:
-1- ok opener but overall pretty open and not memorable.
+Definitely stop here if you are in the area. It is peaceful, serene and fun. I now live 15 minutes away and will be back as much as I can.

7/28/21/ Update: After more though, deliberation, and a few more plays, I decided to update my rating. The course simply doesn't offer enough challenge to be a 4.0 course. It looks really good but it's too open to be at that caliber in my opinion. 3.5 is still a Very Good rating, especially for a 9 hole course.

Tough course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee boxes are nice. Holes range between wooded and open. There's some long holes and some short holes. Good overall course with a wide range of throws you have to make. Water adds a little difficulty

Cons:

Grass could've been cut shorter. Bugs were awful when I went out. Some of the placards for the holes don't accurately depict where the hole is at.

Other Thoughts:

Fairways are a little tight and with the water it's not somewhere I'd take someone to learn to play. Overall I'd say it's a challenging course that was fun to play.
