Pros: - Great baskets
- Great signage
- Great layout
- Did I mention beautiful?
- Great facilities on site
- Incredibly friendly and welcoming owners
- Pro shop on site
- Designed for Disc Golf, built for disc golf.
- 9 Hole beginner red course and a 12 hole Blue layout
- Tees have all been created with fencing and planting to make them feel secluded and sheltered. Benches are being scattered around the course.
Cons: - Only 12 holes so far
- If there have been heavy rains the river turns from a shallow disc retrievable crystal clear delight to a raging torrent of disc losing muddiness so just be aware on that one.
- Struggling to think of many? There is definitely one filler hole in hole 9 but I still quite enjoy it.
- Shame the long tee on 7 can't be permanent as it turns it into a true par 4 where currently it is really just a tough 3.
- The extension 6 holes in the 10 acre wooded hillside aren't in yet.
- Not all tees have been finished with the hardcore yet.
- Lacking a couple of longer holes?
Other Thoughts: So where to begin?
Probably with the rating. I feel wrong giving a 12 hole course a 4 star...
But 'm going to anyway so sue me.
Felin Geri is beautiful, I love it. I've designed a lot of courses now and this one is fighting it's way out of my sub conscience shouting that it's my favourite. Who am I to argue with that belligerent inner voice?
The shallow, fast flowing and picturesque Ceri river runs through the site and comes into play on a number of the Blue course holes which wind up and down the valley before bringing you back to the 12th hole. The hole is 95 meters slightly uphill. It crosses the Ceri at about 30 meters through a gap in the trees and then flies up a narrowing fairway bordered on one side by the ornamental ponds from Felin Geris former glory days as a visitor attraction and on the other side the old cart track. It ends up with a basket on a small mound under a weird straight limbed hanging branch. Situated in front of the old mill (millwheels and all) the gallery, seated in the bar patio area, eating their pizzas from the outdoor pizza oven just the other side of the mill stream, can view as you complete the round with a birdie tap in or the double OB 6. Whichever you get you know there is a beer and a warm welcome the other end of the bridge.
Any discs finding their way into the river should be retrievable unless there have been recent heavy rains. The river where it comes into play with the course is normally less than a foot deep and very clear.
The course has been laid out in two loops of 6 bringing you back to the clubhouse or bar to allow for refreshments or disc replacements mid round.
There are at least 4 holes out here that would be signatures on any other course, Holes 3, 6, 10 and 12. Hole 11 makes use of what was once an island in the river which has since silted up but leaves the clear definition and marshy area that has been staked OB giving the chance to play what feels like a heart shaped island hole without the risk of losing your disc.
Hole 6 still needs a larger tree down which will be out in the next year or so through erosion from the river. It;s playable as is but I will feel more comfortable with the hole once it's down opening up a larger gap to hit across the river .
Hole 10 in the spring with a carpet of snowdrops is the most beautiful hole I've ever played.
With the 6 hole extension in next year this will be straight up to 4.5 star and possibly might make my first 5 star. Maybe. we'll see. whatever happens it will lack a bit of length and two shot holes so it might never make 5 star but I suspect it will always remain one of my favourites.
Another thing that struck me last night, we don;t tend to have multiple pins in the UK because erosion doesn;t tend to be an issue, this course does have multiple pins however for increased fun factor. The 11th hole has 3 positions making the most of the island, the third hole has a superb pin position out onto a peninsula in the river and there are a few others out there too.
