Pros:
A course that, as its name suggest, is well tailored to younger players.
-Amenities: Good tee signs include a solid map. Mach IIIs. Tees are dirt but unproblematic for this track. Also, a disc vending machine (first time I've seen one of those personally).
-Age Appropriateness: As a course designed for younger players with less power, I think this is a big win. Holes are mostly under 200', but still use design like a full-size course.
-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Nice variety for a course of this length. Sparse pine trees make up the foliage, and each hole works around a handful of them to determine shaping constraints. This includes gaps, guardian trees, and a general spread that doesn't force anything specific. A couple of holes use elevation, most notably (9) which is quite a steep downhill. I've played several Eagle Scout courses, and this one far outstrips any of the others for thoughtfulness of design. It's a legitimately fun putter course.
-Ace Race: For older players, these are nine solid opportunities to card a 1. That, in itself, provides some fun factor for any parents, for example, who might want to take their kids here.
-Additional Courses: The other two courses on site looked like they would be a lot of fun. Alas, when driving 10 hour days, you can't stop for very long anywhere.
Cons:
Honestly, it's hard to nit-pick this course. Just a couple of tiny things.
-Tees: Dirt, which can always be improved upon. Not a big issue in dry conditions, since you don't need amazing footing to throw 180 feet.
-Fun Factor: There isn't some extra fun factor to make this an engaging course. It's a very functional short course, but not exciting.
-Scope: The obvious one. This course has a very narrow primary audience, so it won't be broadly appealing.
Other Thoughts:
Burns Park looks like a fantastic disc golf asset to its community. My guess is that it's three solid courses, but what I do know is that this is a perfect "junior" course - good design and upkeep, but on a smaller scale. How to rate it? I don't really know. I'll give it a Typical, because that's what the land and the design feel like compared to all the other courses I've rated.
-Funland: Just what is the "Funland" designated on the park signs? I don't know for sure, but it made me laugh.
