Applebottom Jeans, The Boots with the Fur

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 24, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Cobden Applebottom DGC has a small footprint but extremely well kept park course that offers two separate tees for varying challenge. Clean park in a quaint off the beaten path town. Course and park is well maintained and a round can be played rather quickly.

AMENITIES: Walking track around the perimeter, covered modern restrooms, small soccer field.

TEES/SIGNAGE/BASKET: Tees are rubber matting (which can be slick in wet conditions), Tee signs are basic but well done with all relevant information (a Google Earth top down hole layout photo was also added to the post to assist). Baskets were white Patriot baskets in good shape.

DESIGN: Well done for the limited space available. Props to the designer for going out of their way to avoid throwing at the soccer field and playgrounds. This does force you to double back on a few holes but avoids throwing at potentially populated areas. Good use of elevation and mandos to force creative shot shapes. Basically and ace run pitch and putt that doesn't feel stale and repetitive.

EXTRAS: Course offers a lot of different experience with two tees for every basket, and offers an additional 9 holes on the Lions Club property adjacent. The "back 9" has restricted hours. Closed during school hours Mon - Friday and during events. You can play the short and long tees on the front 9 though for a full 18 if you wish.

Cons:

BASIC: Just another park course full of Ace runs and little difficulty. Fun for beginners and for Glow Rounds, but certainly not enough to keep better players returning.

BETTER COURSES NEARBY: This course is a bit of a drive from anything else if you are wanting to bag multiple courses and is competing against some better courses in Carbondale for your attention. While a solid course for its target group, most won't travel to play this.

CROWDED: Two holes cross and play along a road with vehicle traffic. A few holes throw down and across the walking track and could be problematic if in use (it had a couple runners using it the day we played which slowed down our round).

DOUBLE BACKS: Normally I would consider this a bigger con but it is only a small one here. As I mentioned before, this park is quite small, but the designer took care to make sure you weren't throwing over the soccer field or directly at the playground. This leads to you having to tee from near the playground and walk back to it to tee again in a different direction. I don't mind this a ton, but it will annoy some.

SCENERY: Not the most majestic park with very little elevation changes, a city setting, no water features, and lack of difficulty there really isn't a signature hole that will catch your attention and be memorable.

Other Thoughts:

A solid beginner 9 hole course, with multiple options to play 18. Great setup for glow rounds and a quick easy day on the course. Probably not a course to visit unless you are trying to catch em all, better than a lot of 9's I have played, but lacking any wow factor that would make me want to go back.

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. Well maintained, clean little park.
2. Quaint small village
3. Great signage and hole maps
4. Good use of elevation in such a small area
5. Restrooms
6. Great for beginners or a quick round
7. Red and blue tees make great use of small area

Cons:

1. Basically just another park course, don't expect much challenge
2. A bit off the beaten path
3. 2 holes cross a road with some foot and vehicle traffic

Other Thoughts:

If you happen to be in the area and want a quick round, this will do fine.
