Don't Hit the Walkers!

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Some of the holes are really fun. Hole 3 is a short, technical par 3 that runs over a gully, and requires some major thought to shot shaping. Hole 4 goes into the woods, and is a good, tough hole. Hole 7 is a fun straight ahead ace run.
+Some holes are open, and some are in the woods. I like a mix, and this course has a good one.
+There is some distance to be had here. There is at least one 400' hole, and multiple over 300'.
+All but hole 9 have at least some trees in play.
+Easy to navigate. In most cases, the basket finishes right next to the next tee.

Cons:

-The biggest con here is safety. If the walking trail is busy at all, this course is unplayable. Most of the holes tee off from the trail, and some throw over it. Hole 1 even has a mostly blind shot over the trail. Playing here on a nice March day though, the park was pretty empty. Just utilize caution and common sense when playing this course.
-Hole 9 is one of the worst holes in the county. It's a wide open 340' shot with a busy road on one side of the fairway, and the parking lot on the other. It's boring, dangerous, and just plain bad.
-Nothing much to look at, this park. It's pretty much just a walking trail and a disc golf course around a building.

Other Thoughts:

=The only reason I didn't rate this course lower with all the safety issues was because this course is actually pretty fun to play! It's a little quirky at times, and there's still hole nine, but I did have an enjoyable time playing here.
=On the aforementioned hole 3, if you are unable to throw over the gully and your disc start rolling... bye-bye, Buzzz. On a similar note, there is a small but nasty pond on hole 6. If you want to keep your disc, stay out. However, the thick woods should do a decent job of keeping your disc safe from the algae infested water.
=Not sure about bathrooms or other amenities. There is at least one bench. Congrats, Gary Eakin Park, you have a bench.
=Not a destination course for sure, but it's a decent niner to bag on a non-busy day.

The Ridge "Remastered"

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The Ridge here at Gary Eakin park got a redesign thanks to a water treatment plant being installed near the old hole 1. It's honestly for the better as now all 9 holes flow counter-clockwise around the park and you don't have to walk half a mile before or after your round to get back to your car.

This means the flow is much improved and it's fairly easy to navigate without a map - which is good because there's no kiosk or course map to be found here.

Holes 1, 2, 3 and 4 are completely different. Hole 5's tee location has moved but it still plays pretty much the same

The best news is that hole 3 is no longer in the running for worst hole east of the Mississippi! It's now a ~200 foot right-to-left tunnel shot through the woods across a ravine to the top of the old hill you had to play up previously. A bad tree kick could send your disc careening down the 45 degree incline towards where the old tee location was, so like any true ancient evil the threat never really died.

There is some shot variety to be found here. Three of the holes measure over 300 feet and give you wide fairways to air it out, and some of the others require you to hit gaps into the woods to access the baskets.

The Mach 7 baskets here are in good shape and pretty easy to spot from the tee for the most part.

There's a giant open field in the middle of the circular path here that you can use to warm-up and/or for field work.

Cons:

"The Ridge" is a bit of misnomer since there's very little elevation to be found here. There's the ravine on hole 3 and then a small bit to be found on holes 6 and 8 but the rest of the holes are pretty flat.

To call this area a "park" is a bit of a stretch as well. It's literally just a giant paved circle with a walking path and parking lot. No amenities to be found. At least you get the trees all along the edge to break up the monotony but there's really, literally, nothing else here.

7 of the 9 holes tee off from the walking path and play between said path and the woods. This ain't Vista del Camino but you will have to wait for paths to clear with some frequency. Hole 1 now requires a semi-blind shot over the path right where it curves. It's not too hard to imagine braining some poor pedestrian if they're in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Hole 9 tees off from a sidewalk and plays along a local road. If you pull or overturn your (RHBH) shot it could pretty easily end up in the street.

The tee-signs here give you the distance to the pin and that's about it as far as disc golf relevant information goes. However, all 9 signs do boast a wastewater fact! Did you know that Storm Water runoff is the most dangerous pollutant?

There's no water carries but there is a non-zero chance you could lose a disc in the rough. The fairways are forgivingly wide but that didn't stop me from finding myself waste deep in woods and weeds looking for my discs a time or two.

Other Thoughts:

You are greeted by a big sign with the park rules if you pull into the western end of the parking lot. It's your standard fare (no booze, keep your pets on a leash, etc...) with one caveat - no metal detecting allowed! Maybe this is a common park rule but it's the first time I've seen it and it makes you wonder just what Gary Eakin was hiding...

Overall I think the redesign improved the course. The designer certainly deserves some applause here for squeezing in a serviceable 9-holer given the landscape. They didn't have much to work with but they absolutely did the best with what they had.

The Ridge is not a destination course by any stretch of the imagination, but it's worth at least one round if you find yourself nearby.

Just follow the walking paths 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

New addition to the far westside.
You WILL get exercise!
Pleasant park environment.
Brand-new DGA Mach 7 baskets.
9 holes for a shorter round(play twice for 18).
All paved teepads.

Cons:

No course map anywhere to be found. EDIT: There IS a map here on DGCR. Just nothing on course.
Teepads are all part of the walking path so you will have some pedestrian traffic.
Some of the hole transitions require LOTS of walking(i.e. 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and 9 to 1).
Hole 3(the only woods hole) is IMPOSSIBLE! Into the woods, hard right, halfway up a STEEP hill.
If it's been raining I don't know how you make it up 3 to 4? Dirt path up a near-45 degree grade.
Lack of obstacles in the fairways. Pretty much all straight shots with a couple edge-of-woods baskets.

Other Thoughts:

I've been playing now for a couple years and living on the westside I'm usually at Avon, Brownsburg, or The Masters(Plainfield). All good courses for different reasons. When I noticed here that there was a new course in Danville I made the trip out. Not familiar with the area, I went in Ellis Park figuring Eakin Park was nearby. By dumb luck I parked at the first basket I found and it happened to be Hole 1! To find it you just look for the Rotary International shelter by the intersection of Sycamore Lane and E. Columbia Street. The first 3 holes are actually in Ellis Park and after the woods transition Hole 3 you play the rest in Gary Eakin Park.

I applaud whoever took the time(and money!) to construct the new course. It follows a couple walking paths and if you look for the 3- foot high posts they will give you hole#, range( Hole 6 is MUCH shorter than listed), and a fact about the local DPW. Without a map and being my first visit I didn't have TOO much trouble finding holes, but be prepared to do some walking to get to a couple! Decent course for a Recreational player like myself(middle-aged, not much of an arm). I imagine tournament-caliber players would find it pretty easy due to lack of fairway obstacles and no real water hazards. I shot a 32 both rounds.

All in all, I'm glad I took the short trip out to Danville. If nothing else, now there's a review on this new addition. Not the best local course, but definitely not the worst either. Enjoy the nice walk down the sidewalk along Sycamore Lane back to your car after Hole 9. It's shaded, pretty, and DOWNHILL. 2.5
