Yelm Prairie Is No Tornado; More Like A Gentle Breeze! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

To understand my title, you'd need to know that the Yelm High School athletic teams are called the Tornados. As you drive up to Yelm Prairie Elementary School, you'll see the white Patriot baskets around the campus. The course starts in the center of the campus near the covered area and the swing sets. Holes 1-7 have tees marked on the sidewalks and asphalt paths. 7 & 8 tee off from the grass. Even with the Udisc app, finding these marked tees was difficult. Reportedly, there is a Main 9 hole set up along with a twice around the nine baskets with Blue for the front nine and Red for holes 10-18. Truthfully, I haven't the foggiest idea of which set up I played. I was thrilled whenever to found any marked tee.

Starting in the campus center, # 1 plays about 350' into the wooded area. Then # 2 tees off from the path to the # 2 basket in the corner which is marked by a red arrow on the tree. # & 4 play around the play field, then 5 & 6 play back into the campus center. # 7 plays out again and then # 8 plays to the basket in the corner near the pre-school. The you have a fairly long walkout to the front of school where you play across the parking lot to an island hole. It's about a 257' hyzer shot to the island.

The course has four holes playing over 400' but things are primarily open and flat. Playing the paved areas. Bark and fences OB adds to the challenge.

Cons:

The course is not available during school hours and possibly during some sports events.

Course is flat and mostly open.

Navigation is dicey without a Tornado local. Tee pads on the walkways are small, faded and difficult to spot. Although, I'm sure the course designer's were handicapped by the school district when painting on the walkways.

Other Thoughts:

Currently (end of July) the school gates are locked up pretty tight. I was able to park in front and walk through a small gate but I kinda kept one eye out waiting for Yelm's finest to drive up and escort me off the grounds or worse. I was the only one on the school grounds on this Sunday morning. If I lived in Yelm, I'd learn the layouts and probably figure out some safari rounds. There isn't much competition immediately around here. With some signage and better pads, I could give this course an average 2.5.
