Excellent intermediate course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 11, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well planned and exectuted design.
Wonderful flow with a variety of challenges.
Beautiful holes along the lake.
Some really memorable holes (#13 - long, #17, #14 - plenty of nightmares as well).
A solid (summer) disc selection at the Park Store.
Short and long tees offer different types of challenge.

Cons:

Keep a careful eye out for fishermen on #6, #9, and (possibly skip) #10. They've been here longer than we have, so please be respectful of their recreation.
The course holds water and can get very spongy for a few days after a heavy rain.
Serious roll-away issues on #15 and #16. Miss left and you will likely wind up in the lake.
Trash... I regularly pick up trash when I play any course, but wind up carrying a trash bag when I play Stonelick. More receptacles would help.
Minor nitpick - it would be great to have a practice basket or two. There's plenty of room for it.

Other Thoughts:

You know that look, right? The "you have got to play that course" look you get from a fellow disc golfer when he mentions a course he really loves.

I'd joined a threesome on my local course on a busy Saturday in September. We kicked around a few of our favorite spots and he mentioned Stonelick. "Is it any good?" I asked. The look those three guys gave me told me everything I needed to know.

Stonelick has become firmly one of my top five Cinci area courses. It's a great challenge for a intermediate level player (me, on the lower end of that scale). Birdies are there for me, but really must be earned. There are a few holes that I find just beastly difficult, which I think is a good thing on an intermediate course.

#3 - Seems to me that this hole is where the course really begins. From the long tee it plays 700 feet through the woods and is an honest par 5. Hitting the tunnel is the key as is staying in the tunnel despite some inconventiently placed trees. I celebrated my first six on the hole like I'd just won a tournament. I find the shorter tee is more difficult as entering the tunnel will require a shaped or tunnel shot.

#5 - After a pretty straightforward par 3 (#4), you come to a nasty par 3 with no clear line to the basket. I've generally gone with the blast and hope method here, although I've thrown just about every shot in my repertoire to try to get even halfway to the basket. It's 370 from the long tee, but I'm not sure if there's much difference from the 311 from the shorts. I'm thrilled to walk off with a bogey on this one.

#14 - This hole lives in my brain. It's there saying, "No matter how much you think you've improved, I'm going to f*** you up." It does... regularly. From either tee you play from, placement of your drive is going to be everything, but you are far from home free even then. The approach on this par 4 is downhill and requires some degree of shot shaping. The lake comes into play on the left and a bad skip off a tree or a root might mean a lost disc and at least a bogey.

One other note on Stonelick. It's more free of invasive honeysuckle than many courses in the area, which makes disc location and play from off the fairway a lot easier. The downside is that there are many prickly and thorny bushes to contend with. With the added element of water in play, a disc retriever is very handy here.

And if you ask me about Stonelick, I might just give you one of those looks. Yes, you want to play here.

Oozes with potential

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I love the water, and they found a way to shoot over it.

Cons:

My lords the trees... half the holes lack true fairways from tee to green.
Sometimes it's the drive and sometimes the approach, but there's a few too many throw and prays.
Some of the tee boxes seem forced.

Other Thoughts:

Great property and unlimited potential. If it lost a few trees and maybe tweeked a few tee boxes could really be special

A Top 5 Course for Me

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm not one given to hyperbole and I try to be critical and balanced in my reviews (please see my review history to verify) but I really struggle to find much negative to say about Stonelick. Outside of the truly legendary courses I've played, such as Hornet's Nest and Idlewild, Stonelick ranks as one of my favorite experiences. Here are the pros:
-2 sets of teepads and 2 pin positions on every hole
The longs and shorts weren't just there for beginners and vets, they generally offered completely different shots. We played the shorts, but on several occasions thought that the line from the longs actually looked easier. I'm not sure how often the baskets are moved to new pins, but that also significantly changes the hole. For example, hole 14 goes from a 300' par 3 to a 500' par 4 depending on the pin position.
-Great variety in shots
Hole 1 is a 600' fairly open par 4 and 6 holes are 400'+ when playing the longs. There is some elevation changes, several wooded holes, a couple ace runs, a water carry, and hole 13 has 2 possible fairways with a "V" shaped teepad.
-The environment is wonderful, right on the lake
Stonelick seems to be a park based around the lake and the course incorporates water whenever possible. Holes 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, and 17 all play near the lake's edge, with 10 actually being a water carry to a peninsula green.
-Tons of parking
Hole 1 is by a very large lot, but if that were full you could also start at hole 8 which has an even larger lot.
-Bathroom between hole 11 and 12
-Very little crossover with other park activities.
Holes 7 & 11 play relatively near a parking area and I could see oblivious park goers wandering onto 10s green or bank fishing near the water holes, but for most of the course I felt like the course was ours alone.
-Signage was great
There was some controversy trying to get the tee signs in place but they are there and great. They include the sponsor's name, a historic fact about the area, and a diagram of the hole including a note regarding the location for the long and short pad. There were also signs indicating the next tees location on many holes and I noted at least 2 signs warning park patrons that they were entering flying disc areas (including on 10s green)
-Divers are good about returning discs
I didn't let this inform my overall rating, but I think it's nice to note. Nearly every month a diver posts all the discs they found on the local lost and found page. This includes uninked discs. Hope this continues!

Cons:

Not a ton of negatives, but definitely a few that I'd note
-Can definitely get muddy
This course is built around a lake so it does hold water. When I played it hadn't rained in 2 days but holes 1 & 2 both were swampy as well as anywhere near the lake.
-Lost disc risk
With this much water in play a lost disc is definitely a strong possibility (I went swimming on 10 to grab my brother's errant tee shot). A couple of the holes have pins within 40' of the lake while others have a steep hillside all along the fairway with a rollaway risk leading to the water.
-14 long is tough
When in the long position, the shot is a 270' uphill shot followed by a left turn and another 230' downhill shot, with water along the edge. I personally liked the hole, but it's not everybody's cup of tea.
-Saw some poison ivy
-As others have said, the double mando on 18 short is punitive. The mando on the left makes sense as it prevents a shot over the parking lot, but the right mando should be ignored.
-Not tour level
The only reason I mention this is I've seen it suggested on the local disc golf page that this course could be a good compliment to Idlewild for a Worlds bid. In it's current configuration the pros would eat this course up. Unless a set of gold tees were thoughtfully added I doubt this course would serve that purpose.

Other Thoughts:

This course was an absolute delight. There was a little bit of everything. With the longs and shorts for tees and baskets I feel like you could play this course regularly and not tire of it. Overall, I just couldn't find much substantial to complain about. I highly recommend this course for anyone in the area or for those making a trip to the region for a disc golf road trip.

Stones Throw 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

~Scenic state park setting
~Multiple tee pads & pin positions
~Concrete tees, nice signage, standard park amenities
~Fairly fluid to navigate

Cons:

~A handful of holes need lines/fairways opened up
~Some tee pads are misaligned with the hole direction
~Course holds water in areas
~Repetitive in spots
~The double mando on 18.....come on really?

Other Thoughts:

This course rounded out my recent visit to the Dayton area, and it was played on a balmy March afternoon. The state park provides a nice environment and offers modest natural beauty. There is an ample sized parking lot at the course and the layout starts and finishes near this lot.

Overall it's a fairly typical state park layout, you get a pleasing mix of parks style holes around mature trees coupled with areas that dive into a more wooded setting. Decent use of elevation and enough variety for repeat playability. Two concrete tees on each hole. Some of the tees we played are significantly misaligned to the basket, enough to detract from the fun factor. Multiple pin locations also provides for good variety for those who are regular visitors.

Good signage and course flow, no issues with navigation but there is an odd long walk along the beach area between two holes. For being a fairly new course I felt the overall layout was nicely cleared and playable, however a few holes come to mind where additional clearing should be done to create more defined fairways. The ground was very wet and sloppy in some areas, and although it's the wet season these areas are likely slow to drain and tighten up.

Some stretches felt a bit repetitive, but again this can be remedied by mixing up tee pads and pin placements. Overall it's a fairly well thought out design, and the course installation was done nicely. It's a good course, not great, but good and there's nothing wrong with that.

Stonelicking's Tasty! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 4, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Solid course in a well maintained state park.

• Variety: Very Good - Nice balance of well-wooded/fairly open. Reasonable range of distances, especially if you mix between long and short tees. Good mix of fairway shapes, with some creative fairways to challenge decision-making and shot shaping. Holes that force you to hit "the" line, and holes that let you select your line. Kudos to the designers for making the short and long tees different shots (very much so in some cases), rather than the same shot from 100' closer/farther away. Nicely done!

• Elevation: Decent - Nothing spectacular, but with holes ranging from from flat, to can't be ignored on a few holes, and some with more subtle change from tee to green, there's enough to whet your appetite.

• Challenge: Very good - Quite sufficient to challenge most players, without being difficult enough to beat you down.

• Equipment: Very Good - Dual concrete tees were quite adequate. Mach 7 baskets with lollipop get the job done. Tee markers are simple, yet effective, providing distance and shape of hole, and are located at both long and short tees - pretty easy to spot from a distance.

• Aesthetics: Very good - Wonderful walk into, out of, and back into the woods, with several views of the lake along the way. #1 long is dressed up to greet you. The bridge on 17 tells you they did things right. Some nice stonework adorning 18's basket. The only thing that kept me from bumping it up was the buzz kill of asphalt near the middle holes ... just when my mind was easing into escape mode. :

• Fun-Factor: Very Good - Thoughtful design, balanced variety, creative fairways, and lake views make Stonelick a fun play.

• Memorable holes: Loved the water carry to the peninsula on #10. 13's long tee offers mirror image L & R fairways around an island of trees, while the short tee is nicely nestled right in the middle of the trees. #15 is a bit of a gut check. 17's a fun downhill tunnel shot; not hard to reach, but challenging to stick.

• Routing/Nav: Good - After holing out and heading toward the next tee, watch for the bright yellow triangles to get to the next tee. The triangles point up for the longs, down for the shorts... elegant in their simplicity, yet highly effective. Front 9 holes (or so) play near a shared use section of the park. Last several holes are more secluded. Doesn't loop back to parking until the end.

Cons:

Way more right than there is wrong. Take these with a grain of salt.

• #14 just didn't do it for me. I don't mind difficulty, but something about this hole seemed unreasonable.

• Poison Ivy - Not necessarily all over the course, but it's flourishing on #'s 6 and 9.

• Double Mando between the trees on 18 short is unnecessary and seems ridiculous.

• Chance of disc loss: A few holes flirt with the water - others really bring it into play (skip past left of the drop-off on the left side of 15, and kiss your disc g'bye).

Other Thoughts:

Solidly designed course for the most part, with just a couple of holes I found annoying (but that might just be me). Great addition to an area that already had several excellent courses. There's a lot to like here - definitely better than good, but not quite enough to get my vote of excellence. It's obvious a lot of work went into this course, and I thank the designers. Please slip a few bucks in either of the donation boxes at 1L & 1S, and enjoy!

playable and fun course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 27, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Entire review from perspective of playing longs
A variety of shots required on this course. Some change in elevation up hill downhill around trees, over water on 1 hole
and near water on a couple of holes. Very fun and challenging course. Some hard to get par 4's and par 3's and some makeable par 3's. Great signage throughout course. Each pin has yellow markers signifying circle 1 area and seems like each has 2 pins for most part. Playing this course during spring/summer would be harder I suspect due to brush and trees existing. Each hole has 2 pads long and short well marked with yardage and I think each hole has 2 pins as well again well marked with yellow markers in ground showing circle 1 boundaries.

Last 4 holes quite challenging due to elevation change and into woods and tight lines.
As others have said you can park near #18 and walk toward 1 and also if parking lots near #1/18 are full keep driving around toward other holes and you can start on a higher # hole than 1 and play thru entire course starting 5 to 18 and 1 to 4 type of thing. So makes it flexible in case parking full.

#10 goes over water on the drive about 220-230 for long tee and about 180-190 for short tees. to peninsula green. so be forewarned if you cant throw that far.

#5 was hard par 3 due to tight lines but a good challenge

Cons:

#4 tee sign confusing as it showed pin to left of tee pad but pin was to right of it a bit.

Having not played this course before we had to hunt for some pins in order to get a line on throws such as #3 and #11

#11 throws near parking lot as well out to right and that could be dangerous if cars there or people walking. That hole to me should be redone or a warning posted at tee pad to keep disc in fairway and not go out to right to parking lot

Other Thoughts:

Played it 2/27/2021 some fairways are quite soupy wet and muddy boots highly recommended.

Brand New And Already A Must Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Stonelick State Park has a disc golf course that is only 2 months old , but after playing it , I wonder what took me so long . There is a fair sized parking lot just down from Holes 1 & 18 , and there are several other lots close to different parts of the course if you prefer starting on a different hole . I did not see a bathroom nearby .
The Equipment - Very good .There are signs in the park showing where the disc golf course is . There is a small roped bridge that you walk across ( unnecessary , but classy ) to stand on the tee pad . There are a couple of other nice bridges and some nice steps leading out of the gorge on 14 . There are 2 cement tee pads per hole , about 3 1/2' X 8' . The tee signs are yellow capped dark brown wood , giving usual information and a primitive path to the basket . There are also many white Next Tee signs with green lettering to keep you navigated . The baskets can be put in alternate spots and are orange capped Mach VIIs .
The Landscape - The course was mowed and the tree limbs cleared and cut back when I was here . The park is immaculately clean . NO huge hills here , but plenty of slopes . The first 3-4 holes are the flattest on the course , then the flat part mostly goes away . There are a couple of steeper spots ( #14 ) and punishing ridges that you might have to contend with if your disc goes over . The lake comes into play on several holes . Baskets are backed up against it and there is even a water carry on 10 . The course splits with park style and woods holes during your round .
Course Appearance/Atmosphere - The appearance of this course is excellent . This is a scenic park with an equally aesthetic disc golf course . Even if you aren't playing well , you will enjoy the walk . An example will be your walk from #10 - #11 . The atmosphere is positive and enjoyable here . The course is challenging , but the Fun Factor is what makes the course special . Even though it is only 2 months old , the course had a lot of players on the Tuesday late afternoon that I played . This course is no secret .
The Highlights - I am reviewing from the longs , #1 is a flat fairway with some trees thrown in randomly ( 617' ) The course bends at the end to the right to a protected basket just inside the woods . An Excellent started hole . #5 is downhill left to right drive ( 370' ) to a small green and basket in front of the lake . #8 is a downhill drive off of an elevated tee . #10 is a 260' water carry to a basket on an inlet . Overshoot and you might wind up in the lake behind it if the trees/brush don't stop it . #13 ( 495' ) gives you 2 alleys to choose from with a split tee . The fairways slopes downhill some through a tight fairway to the basket with the lake right behind it . #18 ( 444' ) is a nice finishing hole with a mando between a line of trees , playing from the tee pad inside the woods to and elevated basktet protected by some fairway trees .
Signature Hole - several holes could qualify , but you will like the S shaped #14 hole ( 473' ) wrapping around some trees , your first drive will go upwards to a plateau , hopefully looking down at the basket . There is a significant downsloping to the right that leads to the lake . The basket is protected by the lake on the left and trees on the right , Lots of decisions and risk/reward ideas will come to your mind .
The Time - It took me about an hour and 20 minutes to play all 6722' of this course . Some of it was spent looking for a disc ( lost ) . A group of 4 will be out here about 2 hours and 20 minutes playing from the longs .

Cons:

Not much to complain about . I don't know where the alternate pin positions were on wide open holes 4 and 7 , but these would have been more memorable if 4 was tucked into the left in the woods , and 7's basket was hidden to the left or right .
There were a couple of spots were the wind could move a disc roadside and hit either a car or jogger ( 4 , #11 ) I never saw one , but you might run into a dog walker not knowing that a new disc golf course . There are some Beware of Disc Golf signs in spots . The course is new and the park is shared . Play Nice . There are some small stumps present in some fairways , most are spray painted orange , but watch your step . Especially since fall leaves can cover them .Speaking of leaves , watch your disc on hole #17 . The leaves can build up that a ricochet will bury your disc until spring ( I am a victim ) Not a con , but some benches and maybe a shelter reserved for disc

Other Thoughts:

I have played well over 700 courses in my life , but I can't remember a time where a course that was opened 2 months ago was so ready to play right away . I have lived in the greater Cincinnati area all of my life and never even heard of Stonelick State Park until this course showed up in Disc Golf Review . This is the type of place where you play a round then hang out at a shelter and eat some lunch while admiring the surroundings . Kurt and Shauna Lahm did the legwork and design . Thank you and also the park board for your tireless efforts by putting all of this together . Dual tee pads , alternate pin positions . tunnel shots , risk/reward drives and putts . A lot of variety here including hyzer and anhyzer shots . You can find a couple of more challenging courses in the general area ,but none that is both challenging And fun .
This is not quite a destination course ( yet ) , but it is a destination area . This is a 4 rated course and another 4 rated course, Osage Grove , is just about 7 miles away .

My Recommendation - Some of these short tees don't give the less experienced much relief , but it is still great fun and a great park . Not what I would call family friendly or a good intro course , and it might intimidate a newbie that is learning to control drives , but this is a fantastic play for locals , groups , campers , and everything intermediate and up . This is off the beaten path for travelers , unless they have business in the Cincinnati area or are spending some time here to sample the cuisine and take in a ball game , go to the zoo or the aquarium . Course Collectors , if they plan it right , can play quality courses Osage Grove , Stonelick , then cut straight down and play Williamsburg and Funburg ( Johnson Hills and Woodland Mound aren't far away . This is too good a course/area to pass up if going down I-275 or I-71 . ( The family can check out Jungle Jim's while you look at the beer /wine selection after you play ) .
Play This Course !!!!

Beautiful park and course especially in October 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 21, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Stonelick is located in a beautiful clean and large well maintained state park. I played in October with the leaves in their peak fall colors. Two sets of cement tees clearly marked with L or S on the tee sign pole. #10 peninsula throw over water was short enough (198') for even amateurs to clear. Cart friendly in most places, the back 9 definitely has more elevation though. Easy to navigate, I didn't need the map I printed out. The Mach 7 baskets caught well. #3 par 4 was a very good hole. Several holes had water that could come into play with a bad shot or ricochet, I like this design.

This course has a nice mixture of open and wooded holes, sometimes both on the same hole.

The open areas had nice cut grass!

#17 short was a fun tee shot.

Cons:

Some brown tee sign poles had a yellow A and B on them even though there was another short tee available, some with just A which made it just a little confusing.

The tees didn't face the exact fairway on a few holes. Not much distance difference between the long and short tees at times.

#7's wide open 263" shot was boring.

#9's short tee shot was stupid.

#14 par 4 had a hard 2nd shot required.

#15 steep drop off to water, I lost a disc in the leaves.

The double mando on 18 short is terrible.

Other Thoughts:

While not near the Cincy proper it is close to Osage another fine nearby course.

Thinking you could park in several different parking lots and start your round close to many different holes. Parking near hole 1 is in the Grant Family picnic shelter area.

The trees on #1 and #2 fairways will grow and change the play significantly over the years to come.

#4 looked like it plays into the woods yet the basket was on the right in the open.

The scenery and backdrop of the lake on numerous holes is iconic. I really enjoyed the flow of the course, with elevation changes and tight lines, It quickly draws you in...but be careful! If you're not strategically placing drives off the tee, Stonelick will show its teeth! Very impressive design and I highly recommend playing this course.

Cons:

Some holes are not cart friendly but that's to be expected with the elevation changes.

Other Thoughts:

Plenty of parking throughout the course, you can pretty much park and start on numerous holes.

New Fun Course in South Western Ohio 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 4, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

New Fun and challenging course which I enjoyed very much.

Many holes have the lake involved to add more drama and scenic interest ...and risk for aggressive play.

The Course requires many technical lines and will punish throws which get off the often tight fairways.

On several lakeside holes Hitting a tree and ricocheting off into the lake is a clear risk so
Plan and execute the placement of your throws with Risk and Reward in mind.
Bring an unloved disc to risk perhaps.

Overall these new fairways are 'fair' and will open up more with traffic and use.

The rough was not nearly as bad as I expected in a new course. In fact it has been cleaned up amazingly well and I am impressed with the course conditions presently. I had no issues hunting my throws.

Lots of poison ivy if you get in the rough and some on fairway edge cut very short and hard to see so keep that in mind...

I'll add more specifics later but I wanted to share this great new area course after just playing it. Vies Overall for top Four or Five status for the Greater Cincinnati area in my opinion.

Only a few miles from the fantastic Osage Grove course which makes it possible to play both of these great courses in a day of great Disc golf fun.

Cons:

The only cons I can think of is that a few holes #4,#11 I believe involve the road and the beach area parking lot in a way that Could result in some cars being hit or pedestrians on 11 especially.

While I could follow the course and never got lost better signage will help new people with navigating the course.

Some benches will hopefully come too.

Other Thoughts:

Go play this course if you haven't yet.
I love to play a new course...
that feeling when you first see and plan your line on a new interesting hole!
This course gave me many smiles and thoughts of ' oh cool' on first impressions and several are highly entertaining to me.

I'm an advanced Am Old guy and shot a 59 on the long tees the first time I played here.

Many birds to be had here but stay in the fairways or know the woes of the boogies which will result.

Challenge/Fun/Scenic interest are three qualities of a course which I factor.
I love a challenge. Idlewild or Mt Airy... but sometimes (more as I age perhaps) I find the Fun factor being oftentimes more attractive.
Banklick has been the most Fun course locally for me.
Osage Grove while a Gem of a course and also some fun ranks higher on challenge and lower on fun...

Great Job to all those who helped to bring us this fun new great course!
I helped to create Mt Airy and Idlewild and few other local courses and I have some idea of the tremendous amount of work it took to birth this Gem.

I want to Thank you all for your labor and for this gift to our Discgolf community!

It's another great addition to our area and further enriches the Already rich options available to us lovers of the sport.

Absolutely Beautiful 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 1, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

As others have mentioned, the work that has been put in to make sure this course was completed has not been overlooked. All of the southwest Ohio disc golf community would like to send out a collective, enormous thank you to everyone involved in the project that is Stonelick.

WOW. If you come away with anything from Stonelick, it will be that the views at this place are beyond spectacular. I found myself looking around at the scenery just as much as I did when I was playing out in Colorado. Seriously, the beauty of this park and course cannot be understated. Stonelick plays through moderate woods for most of the course, with a few entirely wooded holes. The lake comes into play on a decent number of holes as well, although on about half of those it would require a really errant shot in order to submerge a disc. There are maybe five holes in which losing a disc is decently likely if you have bad throw. One of these holes is number 10, a straight water carry, and the cause of my Streamline Runway's sudden departure from my bag. Even if it did swallow my mid-range, I can't help but think that number 10 is the signature hole. Playing out of a gap and onto an island green, it's only about 250 (or 210 from the shorts), but the swirling winds, lack of bailout spots, and aforementioned tee gap make it much trickier than you would think. Also, and by this point it might as well go without saying, it's absolutely gorgeous.

The course in general is pretty varied, with no holes ever really feeling repetitive. For the most part, each hole offers its own unique obstacles. There aren't any bomber holes with the exception of maybe 11, but the lines required offer more than enough diversity. The course flows nicely, and while it doesn't loop at 9, finishing 12 will put you about a two-minute walk from your car, potentially give a minute depending on where you parked. The teepads are nice, solid concrete, but occasionally a little small. The Mach VII Baskets catch well, so no complaints there. It's also worth mentioning that if it weren't for the sticks covering the ground and the fact that permanent tee signs aren't in yet, Stonelick would feel like an established course. Infrastructure is put in place to help navigation and increase course enjoyment. As just a few examples, the steps from 14 to 15 are much-needed but at the same time fantastic, the raised teepads on 8 are awesome, and the stones spelling out "drop" on 10 are quite nice as well. All the vegetation is already grown up, and the park feels as if it has accepted the course into its home.

Cons:

My biggest issue with Stonelick is the difference between the long and short tees. Some of the shorts play more difficult than the longs, not in terms of total difficulty, but relative to par. What I mean by that is this. Let's take for example hole 5, where this first comes into play. From the long tee, this hole is 370 feet, but it's a par 4. From the short tee, this hole is 312, but it's a par 3. I agree with the par on both of these. The issue, however, is that while it's easier to get a lower number from the short tee, it's much easier to take a 3 from the long tee than it is to get a 2 from the short. In other words, birdie is much more attainable from the longs. The same concept applies to 11 and 16 as well. However, this can essentially all be mitigated by simply treating the two tees as separate courses instead of long and short. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate to name them A tees and B tees? I'm not sure, but just a thought. With that said, the shorts are noticeably easier on the majority of the holes where the shorts and longs have the same par. Also, some of the pars are fairly generous from both the longs and shorts, especially on the back. 11, 13, and 15 from the longs and 13, 15, and 16 from the shorts could all be knocked down a stroke and nobody would bat an eye.

There are a few other things design-wise that kind of left me scratching my head. Compared to the rest of the course, holes 7 and 11 feel really bland. I think that 7s basket could've been tucked behind the trees a little more to the left without endangering 8s teepad. But, even if that were the case, 8s tee could have been moved a little further away and still been fine. 16 long is a par 4, but only because it requires you to lay-up your first shot about 90 feet in front of you so that you can throw a 250-foot approach. I'd rather the current short tee for 16 have been the long, and then another teepad been put where the landing zone is for the longs and called that the short tee.

Other Thoughts:

Did I mention this course is pretty yet? Stonelick is as much of a treat for the views as it is for the disc golf, something you don't often get in southwest Ohio. For that reason alone, this course is worth the trip if you're anywhere close. Something I didn't mention is that this course is the perfect complement to Osage Grove, Stonelick's neighbor only ten minutes east. While on paper the courses may seem fairly similar, I personally feel that they give off two very different vibes. Regardless, enjoy yourself out here, and try not to let the lake eat up too many of your discs. Once again, thank you to everyone who made this place into what it is. I'm excited to see how this course develops as it grows out of this early stage. Stonelick is sure to be a staple for the area, and this is going to be a course that locals are going to brag about to others for years to come.

I Stone-like This Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 29, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

First and foremost, kudos to the hardworking team that put this course in the ground. It is not easy to have a course look this beautiful in the first two weeks of it's inception, I cannot imagine how much blood, sweat and tears went into every immaculate detail on this course.

The setting around the lake was fantastic, with many scenic views over the water. Add in the mature trees and lush foliage, it made for a beautiful fall day. On top of the natural setting, there are multiple wooden bridges, stairs and structures that help with traversing the terrain, and also look aesthetically pleasing. There are many great photo taking opportunities throughout the course.

While setting is important for a great course, the golf is great as well. There are a lot of shots that snake through trees and finish near the waters edge or with the water just off the fairway. If the water is not in play, the challenge presents itself with a difficult line to hit or some elevation change.

There are a few holes here that I would like to highlight, like the peninsula hole 10, that takes just a short water carry to reach, but requires good touch to park. Hole 5 has a scenic green, and 17 from the shorts is a super fun downhill putter shot through a tight gap onto an open green.

Navigation was pretty easy, and if it was not intuitive, the map on uDisc was helpful. Tee signs I believe are coming soon, but most holes it was not necessary as the fairway was well-defined. There were no extremely long walks between holes, and hole 18 finished right next to one for quick access to either the main parking lot or another round.

Tee pads were solid concrete, maybe a little short for my liking but quite grippy. The Mach VII baskets are rare, this is only the second course I have played with them, but they catch well and are visible in the woods, which makes them good in my book.

The long and short tees made for a lot of different shots, and not just a shorter copy of the long tee, which is something that is not easily accomplished and very much appreciated. Playing two rounds here back to back is highly encouraged.

Cons:

This place is excellent. I have never seen a brand new course look so good during its' infancy. The lines were well cleared and the paths were worn down making for an enjoyable experience. The few gripes I have with this course does not take away from the status as a must-play course in the Cincinnati area.

There were a couple holes that I do not love, with some funky lines that do not seem possible to create with a disc. However, if I can be proved otherwise I would like to be taught this power.

A few of the par threes on the course were a tad forgettable, with nothing really special to make them stand out. While I understand that every hole cannot be of signature quality, I think there could have been a little more done to make them better.

I think the par on a couple of the holes was soft, like the par 5 13th and 14th were probably par 4s for a true Blue/Gold level layout. Although par doesn't change the course, and it helped my score a little bit, so maybe I should have put this in the pros section?

Hole 18 has a cool elevated basket, however I think the beginning of the hole could use some more clearing, and the double mando off the tee from the shorts is a little gimmicky in my opinion.

Other Thoughts:

This is up there with every other great course in the Cincinnati area, and immediately makes the must play list for when you are in the city. It is only 10 minutes away from Osage Grove which is another fantastic course and would make for a great day trip by itself.

I cannot wait to see this course continue to grow, and hopefully hold tournaments in the near future. I think there are going to be multiple pins coming soon, and the future of this course looks bright.

Thank you to the hardworking crew that has made this course what it is, I will be making many return trips in the next couple months. Everybody should come play Stonelick!

Close to Perfect 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Beautiful course set along side a scenic, if not remote, Ohio lake. Bring the kayaks and make a day of it! Mature Oaks, Beeches and Maples offer the potential for some quality mushroom hunting during your round. Those are just the bonuses to what is a thoughtful, diverse, and almost overbuilt course. From the leaf stamped concrete pads to the ship-like feel of the bridges and rope covered runway post, this course is as aesthetically pleasing as it is challenging!
With the water so often in play, you are more likely to see an Eagle than make one! Not to say there aren't birdies out there, just that for every gettable hole there is one where par is a victory. 54 would be a great score.

Cons:

For many of you, this course will be a bit of a drive, but one you will grow to love as the destination is now the best course in the SW Ohio Area. Only Idlewild beats it in our region.

Eagerly Anticipated, Worth the Wait! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The local disc golf community has been bugging Kurt and Shauna for about a year, "...when is Stonelick going to be open?" Well, it might've opened sooner if they'd all been asking, "...how can I help get Stonelick open?" So there's been some drooling going on, and this turns out to be a dish that more than satisfies. Set in a beautiful lakefront parcel of the state park, the Lahms have designed and installed the prettiest course in the county (and possibly in this corner of Ohio). The infrastructure is astonishing: massive bridges, stairs everywhere needed, even little culverts in places as small as a foot deep, plus really amazing elevated tee pads, a pedestal basket, and 36 well-sized, level concrete tees, each stamped with a really cool leaf motif, join the well-marked and easy to follow signage (temporary in place, permanent on order).

And the design! Half the holes incorporate water as a factor to consider, because you frequently throw down toward the lake to a challenging green, or have a steep, wooded lakeside slope just off the fairway to consider. More than half the holes will challenge your technical game through the woods. There is a fairly good balance of left to right and right to left lines to choose from. The challenging (par 5) hole 14 has both, in stages, and may be a "signature hole" for the course. But then, I'm guessing most people will think of the water carry to the peninsula basket on hole 10 as the "signature" here.

Though there is actually limited elevation change in the park, you do play as many slopes as they could find, and you do have challenging sloped greens on 14 & 15, then ridges and valleys on 16 & 17. The finishing hole is interesting in the tightness of the 'release' line off the tee, utilizing a mando to the right for the long (keeping you away from the short tee) or the double mando (20' off the tee and 4-5' wide!) as you tee off from the short, then out to the open, and fading left to the pedestal finish.
In all, and as of this opening weekend, I'd say the course will challenge Intermediate skill levels, but be enjoyable for all. It opens already at a 4.0 rating compared to the 300+ courses I've reviewed, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it stays in the 4.0-4.5 range from here on out. Kurt & Shauna should be rightfully proud of this gem!

Cons:

Not a con for me at all, but there isn't a wide open bomber tee shot here (maybe the uphill hole 11?). The longer, more open holes still have groves of newer trees or majestic park trees to navigate, and usually finish into guarded woods. Knowing that the signage is temporary, and permanent ones are on order, I didn't expect to have such an easy time with first time navigation. But there are so many well-worn paths out there (they've been working this place over!), there will hopefully be some 'next tee' signage in the two or three places it's needed. Other than that, there's not much to complain about.

Other Thoughts:

The park has a HUGE amount of parking available (I count five lots?), a primitive restroom, shelters, campgrounds, and, well, the lake! Lots of appeal here. And the design didn't seem to cross paths too much with folks out fishing, boating, or birding, but those folks were also enjoying the beautiful fall Sunday we visited. This is going to get a LOT of play!
