Interesting Terrain, Tricky Navigation 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The best aspect of this course is the use of elevation to create interesting shots. The course plays up, down and along a hillside the borders the park's soccer fields. There are a few level holes, but many play steeply uphill or downhill.

There are 9 baskets, and two tee positions for each. The tees are designated 1 - 9 for the first set, and then 10 - 18 for the second set.

In some cases the second tee changes the hole only slightly, as is the case with the 4/13 pair and the 8/17 pair. For many others the line is similar but the distance is significantly different, like 130' for Hole 9 vs. 400' for Hole 18. And a couple are different enough to give a completely different hole. For instance, Hole 1 is a perfectly level 260' hole, while Hole 10 is a 310' top-of-the-world shot down to the basket.

Hole 5 is a great top-of-the-world shot that is listed as 415' long and I'd guess 75' down. Holes 10 and 14 are also significant downhill drives. Going the other way, Holes 4, 8, 13, and 17 drive up to baskets on high points.

With real teepads and decent signage this course could be a solid 4.

Nice big parking lot with a mailbox for maps/scorecards (empty the day I played). Nice restrooms at the parking lot.

Cons:

There is no signage to speak of, and most of the tee pads are simply scuffed out places on the ground. A few have rock borders and some have a wooden stake to mark the location, but navigation is tough. Based on the map the tees for Holes 1 and 3 are down in the mowed edges of the soccer fields, but we found no markers or indicators. They probably don't survive the watering and mowing down there.

There are a few stakes pointing to the next tee, and even some arrows made out of rocks, but without the map playing this course would be pretty much impossible. Even with the map you'll spend some time scratching your head.

Other Thoughts:

Getting started was a little confusing, as we found a large bulletin board with the "Disc Golf" information on it, including rules, etc. Turns out that bulletin board in nowhere near the first hole. Park in the back, left corner of the new parking lot between the soccer fields.

Improved!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 21, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Elevation change, diversity - every throw is different from the last. Great views. Mix of short and long.

Cons:

Work in progress; natural tees, minimal maintenance, only 9 holes

Other Thoughts:

This course has a ton of potential and should improve over time. If you are in this corner of Colorado - don't miss it!

2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 8, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- 9 new baskets
- nice mix of long and short shots and uphill and downhill shots
- some obstacles on the course but not much
- hole 5 is easily the signature shot on the course and one of my favorite "Top of the Word" throws ever.
- the course is in a very accessible park

Cons:

- some tee pads are short or uneven
- navigation can be difficult and tee pads are hard to find
- most of the back 9 shots are just longer or slightly different shots from the front 9

Other Thoughts:

This course could be much better with some better signage and some more permanent tee pads. But in its current condition it is only really worth playing if you are in Craig.

Take me to the River 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

The parking lot is near the first tee and last basket. Its in its own dedicated part of the park. Loudy Simpson Park has good crushed gravel teepads. The fairways are mowed, and mowed to match the fairway area drawn out on the signs. The tee signs have a good accurate illustrations of the fairways with distances and are sponsored by a local business. It is the only course in Northwest Colorado. There are prominent signs that lead you to Loudy Simpson Park all over town so the park is very easy to find. The small section of the course that finds the trees is fun. It is in a natural setting. I would say this course is good for beginners mostly.

Cons:

It's a very boring course, just out in a hayfield with few trees no water or elevation changes. The course it nothing more than a nine hole pitch and putt in the prairie with only a few holes in and around a grove of trees. There are plenty of interesting trees and water hazzards they could have used, maybe they decided to keep it close to the parking lot. But the odd thing they did do was tyr to make the course difficult by mowing awkward shapes into the fairways that you can easily drive anyways. Its actually pretty funny, imagine a fairway that bows out and back to the hole for a total of 320 feet yet the basket is only 230 from the tee pad. It was only worth it to try and ace which we did not. One way to make a vast improvement on this course in my opinion would be to put it by the nearby river.

After having said all that, I still plan to play here again next time I'm passing through.

Other Thoughts:

It has been a while since I played in Craig and I just wanted to give this course a review since nobody has yet. I played this course after having played in Steamboat Springs, and I would have to say that there is no comparison to the two courses, if it comes down to an either-or decision between the two, just go straight to Steamboat Springs. I was only in town for about an hour, just long enough to bag this course and leave. I hit a skunk and killed it on the way in and I could smell my faux pas throughout the round even though the park was relatively far away. I would like to take this moment to apologize to the people of Craig who I made gag and that skunk's family... I'm sorry.
