Rolling hilled stunner 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Incredible piece of property
- Huge variety of holes
- Numerous water features
- Some of the longest downhill shots you will ever play
- Incredible views from the top
- beautiful, serene, peaceful working farm
- So many different holes, it's tough to rate a course when there are multiple layouts available that all intertwine, you could be making up your own different course layout daily all with good flow for half a year and still have options the next day.
- Classic iconic holes everywhere -
-Megabunny is probably my favourite ever hole, a perfectly funnelled 200+ meter steeply downhill shot that can be reached for the two.
- Hypotenuse is similar and if anything steeper,
- Goolagong is a stunning 18th hole to play, Long downhill hole over a pond through a tree lined gap. sticking it for a two is a great feeling.
- The course hosted the European Championships back in 2003 and many of the touring pros of the times (US and European) put it up there as one of if not their favourite course played.)

Cons:

- Baskets aren't the best
- Tees are pretty crappy
- Have to pre-arrange to play with the owners - although get in touch with Angus who is normally delighted to show people around and a really lovely guy. You won;t regret playing a round with him
- Rough is horrible in places
- Be prepared to lose discs, you will lose discs.
- Not the easiest courses to get to.
- Be prepared with snacks, water, emergency first aid, crampons, abseiling kit etc (well maybe not the last three) It;'s long it;s incredibly hilly it;s a beast, step counters had people walking over 20km in a tournament day.

Other Thoughts:

It's an incredible place to play. If you get a chance you have to go there.

Talk to the owners first to make sure it is good to play (I almost got my head blown off by a kid with a shotgun once, good times, he may or may not have been aiming for the outsider, this is rural Dorset after all and there are plenty of places to bury the body out here....)

It only misses out on 5 star for me because it's not a dedicated course and through the year it can get really run down until Angus gets a chance to go out and hulk smash the rough and tidy it all up. Tee pads are crap and in wet weather can get really frustrating. The baskets aren't the best. You're sometimes picking your disc out of sheep crap. It can get extremely boggy in places after wet weather, Hey ho, it all adds to the experience.

Whilst Quarry Park is the professional UK disc golf hub, Whitcombe is the untamed mecca drawing people back time and again for it's natural beauty and calm ambience. I've not played since my kids came along and I miss going every year, I will be back.

Angus and Pat and Edd (the brothers Green) sometimes run a Final Throws Tour event in the summer. I've not had the pleasure and I'm not sure my liver/brain could handle the abuse but it's a non stop weekend long party centred around Disc Golf. It comes highly recommended if you're in to that sort of thing. I believe there are normally different drinks put out at each tee pad to help fuel the troops - this is not a PDGA approved event :)

A good stomp 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

They don't even know how many baskets there are here - maybe 30?
An incredible location.
Massive holes.
I think it was originally built for the European Championships back in the early 90's.

Cons:

It's on a private farm, you can only really play at the tournaments, of which there are two a year.

It's a pretty extreme course - most of the baskets are on 45* slopes with long role aways if you're unlucky.

Other Thoughts:

Up until now, you've been listening to elevator jazz muzak.
This is heavy metal!
There's nowhere quite like it. It'll take your breath away!
