Great course, you are in for a hike 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course has a little bit of everything. Usually empty because people hate the long back 9. Great signage, solid layout. Get your birdies early because few and far between on the back 9.

Cons:

18 is just unfair for that setup after a long hike playing this course. This guy hates walking up that hole after playing the previous 17. The long dogleg left hole is DUMB!!! ZERO chance at a birdie EVER

Feel The Burn! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Deis Hill is a very nice course that is set amongst the beautiful rolling hills of Dover. There are plenty of opportunities to air it out, with a few technical holes mixed in.

Deis Hill is ranked #2 in the state, and I can see why that's the case. Each hole sports three concrete tees, very nice tee signs, and quality DGA baskets. The signs have a picture of the hole, and an arrow indicating the basket position. The maps are very descriptive.

This is a big arm's dream! There are many holes that require a big arm rather than an accurate one. However, there are some more technical holes mixed in that will balance out the round.

Three sets of tees that do a good job in providing variety. Red tees are perfect for a newer player, while the whites and blues give you a decent challenge.

Nice kiosk with an information board and a practice basket. The basket is conveniently next to #1's tee.

Maintained very well. All the grass was cut, and there really wasn't much debris or trash to speak of. It's a lot of effort to maintain a big course like this, and they do a good job.

Tons of elevation changes here, and the design takes full advantage of it. There aren't any flat holes.

Very good mix in distances and hole shapes to make things interesting. Tests most of the shots in your game.

While there could be some fresh tape applied to the bottom of the baskets, navigation is pretty simple. There are some signs for tougher holes to navigate.

Pin placements were very challenging, but fair at the same time. Many were tucked in the trees, making a good approach shot critical.

Trash cans scattered about the course, contributing to how clean the park is.

The first tee is really easy to find. You aren't driving through a big park lost, the tee is right next to the entrance.

You'll feel the burn here, and get your workout in! Might invent the Deis Hill Workout Program... guaranteed you'll lose 10 pounds per month ;)

Cons:

There was a good amount of backtracking from basket to the next tee. Seems to be more noticeable when the baskets are in their "B" positions.

Some signs were way to close to the tee par. Some holes, I was paranoid that I was going to smack my hand against the sign on my drive.

There weren't enough "crazy fun" holes to give Deis much more than a 4.0. Almost every hole was nice, but not really breathtaking.

I always put "multiple pin positions" as a con in my book. Hard to explain why, but I feel like some of the A positions were better than the B positions, but I never got to play it. Just take the best placement and keep it there.

There isn't a loop back to the parking lot until you get back to 18. If you forgot something in the car, it'll have to wait until the end of the round.

A few holes on the front 9 play over a walking path, that was a little bit busy when I played.

Might want to skip this one if you are aren't in the best of shape.

Other Thoughts:

I'm not the hardest thrower around, but I still found Deis Hill to be a really fun play. Even though there are lots of long "bomber" holes, there are enough wooded holes to balance it out.

I'd say that Deis lived up to my expectations. It didn't blow me away, but it was still a very fun course that I'd visit again if I was in the area.

With all of that being said, I give Deis Hill a 4.0/5.0. Very solid place to throw, and would recommend it to pretty much anybody.

Not sure what I'm missing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you want to throw long open drives all round time and time again, this is the place for you.
If you want to get a LOT of exercise and hiking in, this is also the place for you.
Signage was top notch, navigation was fairly well shown.
The shade and holes by the pond were very nice and the parl atmosphere is very relaxing and enjoyable...it was hard not to just relax by the water for an hour or so!
Wide open fairways on many holes.

Cons:

Distance for distance's sake...no real challenge or obsacle, just 600 plus feet of open field to throw a disc across.
Some holes could be broken up into 2 separate holes, I.e. 11 was just a long 400 foot drive, then an abrupt lefthand 90 degree turn and another 100 feet, 15 was a 200 foot open drive and then 90 degrees left and a 200 foot uphill corridor.
A lot of backtracking to get from each basket to the next tee unless you play red tees.
When there is a huge hill, why not drive off of it for a spectacular drive? Instead, hole 17 plays along the top of a hill through a tree corridor and any hit to a tree or disc not landing flat will roll 200 feet down the hill...not very fun.
Not so much challenging as long, ardouos, and repetitive.

Other Thoughts:

I have now played in 5 states, 30 plus courses over 5 years.
I say this to state that I am not a beginner or novice and play quite a lot.
I drove an hour to this course since it is ranked best in Ohio.
I reread all the reviews and must have missed something.
Aside from being ver very long, this course has little else noteworthy about it. It is not bad, but there are much much better courses in the NW Ohio area both for challenge and variety of shot as well as overall fun.
I played 12 holes at par, one under, and the rest within 2 or 3 of par from a mix of the blue and white tees, and would not make the drive to this course again.
Check it out if you are in the area, but IMHO not in the top ten courses in Ohio.

Deis Blues 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes with excellent tee signs and baskets over some great elevation. Concrete tees on the whites, mix of concrete and natural tees for blues. Navigation was ok. Nicely mowed grass fairways.

Cons:

Only one big loop back to parking lot, this is a con here. There is a lot of backtracking to the blue tees as well as the shorts. I usually don't have issues with natural tees, but the long tees here are often natural with bad placement on short slopes and tend to be muddy areas. Being a mostly open course, it gets hot, especially hiking up and down big elevation. Benches are a scarce here and actually needed.

The placement of the tee sign for 1 blue is not great right next to the front of the tee. Plays over/near less used parking lot This hole just feels long for the sake of long with no real risk or reward.

Hole 2 had some walkers by the blind basket and poison ivy lining the narrow fairway.

Hole 4 and 5 had people walking back and forth over the fairway from parking lot to pond. Hole 6 looked like one the best holes but I could not play as it was roped off for a camp archery competition. I had the willies playing hole 7 and 8 with the archers behind me and poison ivy down the edges of the fairways and not far from basket. There is a lot poison ivy in the wood line here.

Hole 13 is another hole that is just long for the sake of long.

Hole 14 is probably the signature hole, but once again I could not play as there was a soccer game in the fairway.

Hole 15 there were people in the way from the long tee and the gap on the dog leg up the hill seems a bit ridiculous to hit as you want to land almost exactly on the short tee pad there, then there is the poison ivy up both sides the steep narrow "fairway".

Hole 16 plays over the park road.

Hole 17 plays right next to road with narrow fairway of line trees, looks like a really cool hole, but doesn't play well as kicks become completely random. The best move is to pitch outside the fairway and play a hyzer instead of hoping to keep any disc that straight and narrow that long and risking the bad kicks.

Hole 18 was a lackluster uphill sloped open hole.

Other Thoughts:

I generally love long courses with big elevation and Deis Hill has that aspect in spades, but overall the course is rampant with other park users, poison off the fairway and lacks technicality to make this the top tier course it begs to be like the Black Course in WV. I got bored as it's so straight forward and throw far or die here.

Deis Hill/Deis Long 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 8, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Deis Hill is a championship-level course and is located in a very big park packed with things to do. The course is thoroughly spread over different sections of the park, allowing the player to experience many different types of holes. Park on the right side of the road next to the pavilions, and a practice basket and hole 1 will be directly to the left.

This course is in top condition, with the most detailed tee signs I've ever seen, concrete tee pads nicely set in the ground, in terrific shape, and allowing a comfortable run-up, and DGA baskets that are in great shape and have the hole numbers on them. There are three sets of tees on almost every hole, with 1 or 2 holes having shared white and blue tees. This is a definite plus here, as each tee gives vastly different looks and lengths for the hole. This is especially true for the middle holes that play through the woods.

One of the most physically challenging courses I've ever played, Deis Hill rewards a big arm - only 3 holes are under 400 feet and 5 holes are over 600 feet from the blues. These incredible lengths, as well as the terrific use of elevation, make even the more open holes challenging to achieve par. Hole 1 - for example - is nearly 1,000 feet of open space, but the gigantic slopes that it plays on can cause definite rollaway potential. However, there are a lot of holes that require you to hit tight lines in the woods as well (holes 6-8, 15, 17). Finally, there are holes in between these two extremes that require you to pick a line through the numerous trees and incorporate length and elevation as well (holes 4, 5, and 16 do the best job of this).

This is a superbly maintained park, and there aren't many chances to lose discs. Rough is present on some holes, but it is not annoyingly thick. There is fairness in scrambling out of the rough. This course is a huge hike, plays directly under the sun most of the time, and takes a lot of time to play, so prepare accordingly. While I enjoyed the hiking aspect of it, some people may not be up for it. Navigation flows very well and there are a lot of next tee signs.

Cons:

-There was a bad storm the night before I played, but still, the course was incredibly swampy throughout most of the course. It doesn't seem that the course drains well, as a lot of the holes play down in many valleys. A lot of standing water was present.
-I wouldn't call the more open holes (9-13) throwaways, but they did get a little repetitive and I would've liked more opportunities for line-shaping in this part of the course. Still, the length and elevation made these holes challenging.
-Holes 1-5 play dangerously close to park roads, causing me to play a little more conservatively and affecting my round a little bit in this way.
-I hardly ever feel the need to sit during a round, but this is one course that could use a few more benches as it is a grueling hike.

Other Thoughts:

Deis Hill is a very physically demanding course with its vast elevation and seemingly never-ending hole lengths. I really enjoyed the variety of hole types that it has, whether being a steep downhill shot(2, 10, 14), super tight tunnel shot (7, 8, 17), sharp anhyzer (6, 9, 12), hyzer bomb (11), or a fun combination of shots. This is definitely one of the hardest courses I have played, and I recommend it to anybody. If you are a beginner, the red tees are still very enjoyable.

My favorite holes on the course:

1- A great way to start a round. Completely open but plays on a very fast slope and then downhill to the basket. Nearly 1,000'!
8- Have to hit a super tight line to reach a the green, plays gradually downhill.
14- A true top of the world shot, and the best downhill bomb I have played. Still requires you to hit a tight window before heading to the bottom of the hill.
17- My favorite tunnel shot and most scenic one that I have played. Very tight but still fair.

Took me about an hour and a half to play alone.

Pros:

Really enjoyed the walk out here. Coming from playing alot of elevation in NC this course isn't as bad of walk as others have reviewed. I played the whites except blue 14 in 1 hr 3 mins. Alot of open crush shots that got a little redundant and not much midrange off tees.
Tee signs were awesome.
Really liked holes 1,2,14 and 17. 17 was probably my favorite even though it was my only bogey. Great drive but that fast green will get you.

Cons:

Hole 11 WTF. especially being LBH. Didn't realize I had to crush another drive 450 or throw 330 and thumber over top.
Didn't care for 15 either.

Really fun course especially driving from MI to NC. Will dif stop in spring or summer so I can throw some rollers. Also check views by the pool

Pros:

Fun course to just let 'er rip. Nicely mowed fairways. Little interference from non-disc golfers. Nice tee signs. Nice use of elevation changes. Closest "destination course" to where I live.

Cons:

My only complaint is the lack of concrete tee pads on some of the blue tees. (I've only played the blue ones.) Hole 4 from the blue tee is the best example of this.

Other Thoughts:

This course is definitely worth the drive. You will get to see how far you can throw. Since hole 1 is the longest hole, the rest of the holes don't seem as long. But they are. Hole 14 is my favorite. I like being able to admire a good drive for several seconds.

Pros:

It is a very challenging course and you better be in good shape cuz its a hike. There a 3 Degrees of Insanity: Red - White - Blue - choose your best option. Whatever you think you can handle from Beginner to Intermediate to Advanced. You have to be insane to play Deis Hill. So Play It!!!! This course is clean and the Signage is Amazing. I have never seen tee signs like it anywhere. I would like to know who made the signs - the course I frequent could use these.

Cons:

Like most reviewers it's the benches or even a few tree stumps. Someplace to rest the weary bones. Other than that a trash can or two other than at the pavillion or pool would help eliminate the random bottle trash on the course.

Other Thoughts:

As an Intermediate player I like the course. The first hole has a basket with a huge arrow attached to it. Can't miss it - well ok I missed the putt but I knew where the basket was!

Other Thoughts:

Deis Hill is an absolutely huge 18-hole course located in the small town of Dover, Ohio. The course is located in a beautiful city park and is one of the cleanest park courses that I have ever played. I don't know if it's all the parks department or the users of the park themselves, but whatever they are doing it's working and all parks should model themselves after this one.

Enter the park from Deis Hill Road. You will be driving along the wooded fairway of hole 17 and come up on the practice basket on the left side of the road. You have two choices for parking, one is on the left behind the practice basket, the second is along the right side of the park road near the picnic pavilions. Hole 1 is located on the left side of the park road directly across from the pavilions.

The one thing that really stands out about this course right from the beginning are the amazing tee signs. They not only show the tee pad, basket, and obstacles for each hole, they also show the alternate tee pads, roads, OB, and any other park features such as buildings, shelters, and parking lots. This makes navigating from hole to hole and tee to tee a breeze as long as you pay attention to the tee sign at each pad.

Right from the first hole you can also see that this course is for experienced players and big arms with the long tee pad measuring in at close to 1000 feet, with the short pad still reaching the 400 foot mark. While this may be great for many experience players and championship caliber tournaments, the novice or casual player might have a tough time or get frustrated with the sheer distance that this course demands even from the short tees.

As you make your way through the course you see some great amenites that I think really add to this courses overall score for many people. I mentioned the amazing tee signs, but there is also huge concrete tee pads, nice and easy to spot next tee signs, and great baskets. While all these are great they seemed to overlook a couple key elements, the first being benches. I wouldn't take off points as far as ratings go, but with a course of this size, hole length, and hiking wise, I would expect to see at least a couple of benches. Another great addition to this course would be some trash cans. While this was one of the cleanest parks I have ever seen, there were a couple of stray water and gatorade bottles throughout. Obviously this happens everywhere and isn't a con of the course but I do think that with a trash can or two this one may actually be as close to spotless as a course can get since many of the bottles I did see looked like they may have just fallen out of bags or were forgotten and left behind.

While the course and park have great amenities, the course could use a little more diversity to be the best of the best. There is a decent mix of open and wooded holes, but some of the holes are so wide open it kind of gives the course that "too open" feel. On top of the wide open feel the course has, it also lacks a lot of thought to play. Aside from one or two signature holes you are just out there throwing basic hyzer, anhyzer, and straight shots. I don't recall one hole that had me standing on the tee pad trying to decide on a route to take, or which shot to pull out of my bag.

Overall the course is really good. While there could be more, there is enough diversity on top of all of the great amenities to put this up there in the top. One thing I will advise is to go in with little to no expectations. Right now this is ranked as the top course in Ohio, and while it's definitely in the top few if you go in thinking number one, you might be disappointed. This course does deserve many of the high praises it gets, but ratings are opinoined based and in my opinion keeping that in mind will really help you to enjoy this course for what it is.

Big Hike! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 2, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Plenty of parking and pavilions for large groups
- The map is put together very well and in great detail
- 3 tees per hole
- Almost every tee is concrete and well maintained
- Signs on the tees are simply amazing! Whoever created these put some serious effort into making this a premium course.
- The baskets are well labeled and in great shape
- The flow is fantastic considering that this is a 10K foot course with hole #18 ending at hole #1. You will spend a lot of time tee'ing out and backtracking a hundred feet or so to the next tee but I do not consider this a con because the fairways do not overlap and the land was utilized to it's fullest. Hole's with a bit of a walk are #2 to #3, #10 to #11, #11 to #12 & #16 to #17.
- No walking paths so you wont be bothered by hikers and bikers! It's just disc golfers in their element.
- Low disc golfing traffic both times I was there
- Bathrooms are on the premises but I did not investigate them
- Very clean with plenty of trashcans
- No vandalism
- Upkeep is grade A! People work hard to keep the fairways clear and the grass cut
- Extreme Distance with intense elevation changes
- There is a large and very nice public pool

Cons:

- Next tee signs. Could use a few more even though the map is very accurately made.
- Could use more benches
- Could use a concrete tee for #14 because the downward grade of the natural tee could cause a bad stumble
- This course could be considered 'too wide open' for those that need the intricate throws through thick woods
- There are a few Blue/White tee signs that need updated. It appears that some of the Blue tees were added after the course was initially installed. If you play Blue tees like me, keep a copy of the map with you because you may be playing from the White tee even though it's labeled Blue on the tee itself.

Other Thoughts:

- This is a challenging course no matter your level of expertise.
- Exercise? HA, you'll feel the burn playing this course.
- Most challenging hole is #15. Wide open to start then turns into a small uphill tunnel alley.
- Favorite hole is #14. This hole is INSANE!! You throw off the top of a huge hill out into a massive open area. You can choose any type of throw and really experiment with which type of throw is better. I got decent distance off an overstable disc doing a hyzer-flip but I really maxed out my distance using Champ Leopard on a very small S curve right then small fade left, landed about 80' from the basket for an easy score of 3.
- This phenomenal course is a MUST to play! Worth the trip for sure!

Cons:

Hole 18 only has a concrete pad for the red tee unfortunately. This might be my only negative thought on the whole course.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is just phenomenal. I dont see anything here that is not to like. It is beautiful. The course is located in such a nice area. The layout of the course was amazing. They have you start at the parking lot, then go all over the park and right back where you started. To start on hole number 1 with a 827 foot hole is awesome. Really it is for all people because they have the three different tees. Personally i played from the white tee but everyone that i saw there was throwing from the red tee. So if you are a good player i would tell you to go from either the white tee or the blue tee. But even though i didn't play the blue it looked very challenging. Really at all of the tees they have concrete launch pads. The launch pad is nice so that you are stable when you throw it. I really like courses with the concrete launch pads. There is great elevation changes. This is probably the best course for elevation changes that i have ever played. The DGA pins were very nice with the double layer of chains. The sign at the tee was probably the nicest that i have ever seen. First they have the par and distance like all of the others do. But the on thing that really caught my eye was the picture on there pointing to the pin. I have never seen this before but i think that it is amazing because if you cant see the pin right away the picture points you there and then thats when you know where it is. It is not a confusing course. Many courses that i have played take you everywhere and you dont know the way to the next tee. That is for sure not the case here. You could navigate throughout the course without a map, but personally i printed one out just in case. When you go into the woods they are just so wide and so fun to play in. The trees are very tall and very well taken care of. Every hole is different and challenges you differently. While some challenge you in distance others challenge you in accuracy. On the very first hole there is a yellw sign with an arrow pointing down to the pin. This is very nice because on that hole you really cant see the pin, so this really helps. It is actually connected to the pin. Like i said before this course is just phenomenal. So it may be a little challenging but it is full of fun.

Cons:

Really i have no clue what to put here. To tell you the truth there are only a couple of minor cons. On only like two holes the blue tee doesn;t have a concrete launch pad. Also on a few of the middle holes the white and blue tee is mixed and it was kind of hard for me to figure this out. Thats it for the minor cons.

Other Thoughts:

I cant even explain this course into words it so amazing. These holes are just so much fun. I would play here all day if i could. I was in the area and thought that this may be somewhat nice, but i was so surprised and i will be coming back here very soon. So what if its four hours from my house i would drive here every day if i could. My favorite hole is hole #17. They have a skinny fairways surrounded by big pine trees. You need to be very accurate to get a good throw on this hole. It is my all time favorite hole and i even triple bogeyed it. I think that soon this will be one of the top courses in the country. In my mind it already is one of the top courses. If you are ever in the area you have got to come here and play this course. There is no way that you could be disappointed. I strongly reccomend that you go here and have the time of your life, like i did.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Three pads per hole.
Very professional and helpful signs / maps.
Perhaps as challenging a course as you'll find in Ohio.
Course designers are clearly lovers of disc golf.
Huge and expansive with lush, rolling hills.
Beautiful scenery.
Large variety of different shots.
Lefty and righty friendly holes.
Some holes reward risk, many reward conservative play.

Cons:

If you are out of shape this course will be happy to let you know that fact.
Watch out, black widow spiders observed in wooded area on hole 11.

Other Thoughts:

My friends and I went to the legendary Deis Hill Park course on July 31, 2010. This course is huge, the pro pads will have you throwing nearly two miles by the time you complete 18 holes. I agree with the posters who said that this course will give be happy to let you know you're out of shape, and that playing it twice is a test of will.
Once you find hole 1 (a monstrous 900+ footer on the pro pad) navigating the course is easy. Park by the first hole; the next parking lot is by hole 4, and there is a monster hill to climb to get back to hole 1 if you make that mistake, like we did. I can't get over how much real estate was used to create this course. Beautiful woods and ponds, lush, rolling hills, scenic drops that can turn what looks like an easy 10 foot putt into a 400 foot nightmare if you miss. I have mad respect for Deis Hill Park. Not sure if my body could handle it every week, but definitely worth checking out. The tee pads are all concrete, and each has a very professional looking sign and map. I was rather entertained by the fact that each hole has a name, such as "Tornado Alley, Kings Row, Turn for the Worse" etc. "Turn for the worse" lives up to its name, especially if you're a lefty. (like me) I'm still having nightmares about that hole. (11) Kings Row (17) is a tunnel straightaway shot through a bank of majestic trees. To the left is a paved road, to the right a hill that will send your disc 400 feet to the bottom if you miss. Ouch. Hole 15 ("Tornado Alley") plays up the opposite side of the hill next to an amphitheater through the woods. This course has an awesome mix of tight and technical and open long shot holes; sometimes these even get combined. One thing that I was amazead by was how empty the course was on a beautiful Saturday. I would have thought with as highly rated as this was that we would have been waiting to play, but no; there were only two other groups there. (and on such a large course you'll really never be in each others' way.) Go visit the good people of Dover, Ohio, and put Deis Hill Park on your list of must play courses!

Wow! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 16, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

~Variety throughout the entire 18 holes
~Amazing condition with great amenities
~3 sets of 12' concrete tees that create 3 distinct ways to play this beast of a course
~Great signs and wonderful baskets
~ All terrain provides for a nice hike
~Good flow, easy to navigate, well laid out course

Cons:

~Hole 9 doesn't finish near the start, no biggie if playing a full round
~It's not closer to my home

Other Thoughts:

Located 30 minutes directly South of me, I have been eagerly waiting for the right opportunity to make my way down and play this course. You can tell right away that those who designed this course had a fun time in doing so. Challenging yet not overly intimidating (unless you play from the blue tees) I enjoyed every single hole on this course. Plenty of technical holes requiring tight angles and precise navigation. You start in an open area and wind yourself along roads, shelters, into a wooded setting then out into more open fields where you can really let your discs fly. Eventually you work your way past an amphitheater along a gravel road, through 2 rows of narrow evergreens and finish along the side of a hill. This course had my heart going and my mind racing almost the entire time. Simply a fantastic place, and a must stop.

Strong-Armed 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 2, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Three concrete tees per hole, the exceptions being 7 & 8, where white=blue tee, and 18, no concrete on blue nor white.. Each tee had great signs, showing the distance, shape, and even a photo of each hole. Practice basket.

Cons:

Hot summer day => pool usage => cars parked close to #15's fairway. Small parking lot may come into play at midpoint of #5.

Other Thoughts:

The course plays in the open space, between clusters of woods, and at times, within/through said patches of woods, of a very large public park located a few minutes off I77. Elevation changes will be evident on most every hole - you'll experience quite a workout playing here. Should throw a fair blend of left/right/no turning shots, and with some extremely long and open holes, you'll have plenty of chances to throw your distance drivers. For this review, I played the course from the whites.

Nothing quite says "Big Arms Welcomed Here!" than hole-1 being 800'+, wide-open, right-to-left slope, with a blind (large, visible arrow helps you find it) basket located behind an out-of-bounds parking lot, and having a tree-filled hill behind! Big-armed blasters should enjoy very long, very open holes 1, 13-14, and 18. Prefer a little less open, little less length? Somewhat shorter, mostly open with either a couple of large trees and/or a cluster/edge of woods to avoid, challenges can be found on nearly half the holes (3-5, 9-12, 16). Want tight woods and/or narrow lanes to hit? Scratch that itch on holes 2, 6-8, 15, 17.

Favourite holes: #15 was an interesting hole - wide-open initially, uphill to a small opening at the edge of a woods (which is where the red tee was located). From there, a sharp left-turn (i.e. straight from the short tee) up a tree-filled slope, needing a little right-fade at the end to find the basket. Also liked #8, slightly downhill initially, needing a subtle right at the midpoint, tree-lined the bulk of the length, opening up a bit with some scattered trees towards the end.

As an alternative to starting at hole-1, find 20th street, and follow the signs to the pool - only $2 to enter, adult-only swim for 15=minutes on the hour, and tee-10 is at the back of the pool's parking lot.

Very good course that should provide you with a pretty good workout, and plenty of distance-driving opportunities.

Exceptional 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 19, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-The best teepads and tee signs I've seen. The Teepads are all concrete except for a few, and the signs have excellent pictures and distances listed.

-Navigation is very easy.

-Extremely well maintained. The grass is always kept nice and short.

-There are multiple benches and trashcans scattered through the course.

-Huge drives. Between the white and blue tees there are drives between 400' and 900'+ long. Hole 1 from the blues is nearly 1000' long, which is a nice change of pace from the many deuce runs on nearby courses. I can't express how nice it is to be able to rip full power drive after full power drive and not be in danger of running past the basket. Not many courses cater to players with over 450' of distance, so Deis Hill is special to me.

-3 complete sets of tees, nearly all of them with their own color coded signs. Having 3 different tees for every hole adds a lot of replay value to the course and lets you tailor the experience to your skill level. Reds offer a lot of ace runs, while whites and especially blues will be challenging your distance.

-Hole 14 blue tee. It's on top of a huge hill where you can just bomb drives and watch them sail for a long, long time. It's not unusual to see players emptying their bag here.

-Extremely pleasant surroundings. Nice variety in tree size & species, plenty of shade in between wide open distance holes, picturesque water fountain with encircling walking track complete with swinging benches, full size swimming pool etc. This is a park I would enjoy going to even without my discs.

-Extremely little interference from non-discgolfers. 3, 4 and 5 play near a road and walking path, but they do not intersect with any of the holes.

Cons:

-If you are out of shape, it will make you fully aware of that fact. Have brought people with me to this course that didn't even throw the last few holes because the elevation whipped them. I guess this would be a con to some players but to me it's a pro because I find the trek invigorating.

-Hole 5 plays over a small parking lot where one or two cars are often parked. Take caution going for the RHBH hyzer route.

-You eventually have to leave. =/

Other Thoughts:

I've tried hard to think of anything bad to say about this course and it's tough. It's a phenomenal course and I have trouble understanding why it's gotten some negative reviews. Yes, there are many long holes...if you don't enjoy that play the red tees. There's a variety of shots in terms of lines, distances and elevation changes, and there's a good mix of open and wooded holes.

I usually play mostly whites, 14 blue and a few reds on holes that I don't care for the white tees much (Danhyzer comes to mind, hole #6, and hole #15).

I can't express enough how much I enjoy this park. This would be worth driving to as a destination. If you have the time, you could make a day out of playing Dover, Massillon and Canton, as they're all fairly close and very good courses.

2017 update: Upon playing more courses I've lowered my review from a 5 to a 4.5. I feel Deis Hill could stand to have more tees in play on the more open holes (#1, #13, #18), and there are one or two other minor qualms I can think of that prevent this course from being perfect. I still consider this in the top tier of courses I've played, but I consider Moraine State Park, Renny Gold and Rolling Pines a half-step above it.
