Amazing views 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Incredible views of the mountains
Good mix of easy and challenging holes
Not overly crowded with trees yet enough trees to provide a good challenge
Good variation of elevation change holes but nothing that leaves you exhausted

Cons:

A few tee boxes had divots making them unlevel which was a minor inconvenience
Course does not play in a loop so when you finish 18 you have to walk back across the ymca campus if you parked near 1
No "next tee" signs or indicatiors

Other Thoughts:

Play this course for the views alone. Great variation of holes and elevations. Would recommend!

Also other reviews mentioned paying to play but this was not the case for me. Checked in at the office and nobody collected a fee from us.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 31, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tee boxes are recently redone July 2017
New signs and posts July 2017
Lots of different holes. Left, right, accurate short shots to long open down hill.
Never crowded.
I cant say enough good thing about the beautiful setting and unique course.
9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 18 are all fun down hill shots.

Cons:

Still dirt boxes, but are no longer pitted but you can fall off the side or ends of them (but really fit the surroundings). So maybe not a con.
18 is often wet.
18 ends so far away.
Pay to play.
Lost/cut down some trees on 5.

Other Thoughts:

Go there for the beautiful long hike as well as the Disc Golf. Or just play a short technical 9 through the trees. You can park near hole one and then finish 9 near your car. 10 through 18 gets long and finishes a long way away. Play the road as OB. So on 6 and 7 and even 11 it forces you to play a left to right shot.
You can't have all of these down hill shots with out ending up far away and down the hill. So enjoy the climb.

Great views at the top 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 22, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Only course in the immediate area and a decent one at that.

- Navigation has improved in the last six months. With the use of the map available here, the signage on all holes is adequate - there are signs w/ par and usually distance on all holes. There are also next tee signs on some holes where there weren't before.

- Elevation! I'm not from the area and hail from a flat area. Playing a course with well-used elevation is not only educating but fun. It's not the craziest elevation or anything, but you're definitely playing in the third dimension on several holes.

- Variety of hole distance/pars/approaches. I wouldn't consider it a beginner course.

Cons:

- No amenities are close by. I know there is at least one public restroom at the YMCA but from what I could tell none are close to the course. There are few if any benches or trash cans. For non-acclimated visitors more benches would be nice.

- Cost: despite what is noted on the course info the park the cost for non-members is $20/adult a day.

- #18 ends nowhere near #1. If you're not from here you'll find yourself on another hike back to your car. Alternately, if you park near the entrance you'll be fine when you end, but you have a long walk up to the first tee.

Other Thoughts:

Dirt tees

I was in Estes for my wedding and made sure to check out the YMCA. It's really close to RMNP and you'd be a fool to miss it. Despite the cost, make sure to check it out, especially if you're from flat-land.

The day I played there was a lot of summer camp activities and people about but none were really on the course. Being June, it was really hot out but if you prepare accordingly you won't suffer from the elements. You may, however, suffer from the long grass in areas, hidden runoff streams, and occasional surprisingly-thick brush. That being said most of the course is dry and easy to navigate.

the walk from 13 to 14 is long and not to scale with the map however there is a next tee sign giving you the general direction of 14.

I had a great time here. As for the course itself, you've got a smorgasbord of forehands and backhands, even some overhands. All things considered though, as a non-pro, it's not necessarily an EASY course. Like any course, once you learn it, you know where to go. I imagine that even for locals however, this course can present challenges, especially since the area has true seasons and sometimes crazy weather. I hope to update this review w/ info regarding the fall/winter. If you're in the area, PLAY the YMCA!

***And indeed I did come back, 5 months later and got to play the course in colder weather w/ snow on the ground. It was just as fun/difficult as it was in the summer but in a slightly different way. Many areas were dryer than in the summer, and as much of the vegetation has died off some holes are easier. That said, it's still a course that shouldn't be underestimated. Personal faves are 15-18. Nice, long, and a little technical, no roads or potential cars in the way either.

A Solid Mountain Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Good use of the trees available on this course. While very few of the holes are heavily wooded on this course, the trees are used well to knock down errant shots or force certain shots.
-For the most part the course is pretty easy to follow. There are pretty well worn paths between the two holes. The only navigation issues comes on holes 13 and 14 (see cons below).
-Baskets are in good shape and catch quite well. They are Innova Discatchers so they yellow band is pretty easy to see from the tee-pad.
-Decent variety of distance. The majority of holes are around 300 feet, but the back nine adds some holes that are around 400 feet and then hole 18 is a 714 feet, which is nice to let the disc rip.
-There is a pretty good variety of more wide open holes and then some holes that have tighter lines to hit.
-Good use of elevation change available on this course. Most of the holes either incorporate some uphill or downhill and a few holes (like 14 include some sidehill shots.
-The last 5 holes are a lot of fun. Hole 14 is a sidehill shot. Hole 15 is a more wide open shot down to a basket tucked into a ravine in front of some trees. Hole 16 is 400 foot shot through a meadow with a dogleg left to a basket situated up on the hill. Hole 17 is a significantly downhill shot with a pine tree blocking easy access to the basket. Hole 18 is a long 714 ft shot slightly downhill across a meadow. These were the best holes on the course and were a really great way to end the course.
-Benches and trashcans on several holes
-Tee-signs at each hole tell the distance and par of each hole.
-Course wasn't very crowded at all
-Good view of the Mummy Mountains.

Cons:

-Dirt tee-pads, a lot of the tee-pads are just worn down dirt patches and can be very uneven at times.
-While I really enjoyed the last five holes, the first 12 or so leave a little to be desired. The first 12 are basically all straight shots through trees that could knock down an errant shot. After a while, the first 12 got a little repetitive.
-Once again, while the course has a decent variety of distance, the longer holes don't start appearing until about the last five holes. The first twelve all sit between about 250 and 300. The distance on these first twelve holes starts to feel a little repetitive.
-A lot of this course meanders throughout the cabins on the property. It felt weird playing really close to where other people were staying and at times an errant shot could hit a cabin.
-A lot of holes play uncomfortably close to roads or camp buildings. There are quite a few holes where a bad shot could easily bean a car or another guest of the YMCA.
-Very long walk back to the car from hole 18. I don't mind a good walk, but this course makes absolutely no attempt to circle back to the parking area for the first hole.
-It would be nice if the tee-signs had a layout of each hole and not just the distance.
-Very long walks between hole 12 and 13 and then hole 13 and 14. Make sure you bring a map so you are able to navigate between these two holes.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this course is a bit of a mixed back. The first 12 are average and get repetitive after a while, but last five holes or so show a lot of creativity and are a lot of fun. Because of the first 12 holes, I don't think this course is really worth the $15 for a day pass, but if you are staying at the camp or a member of the YMCA , it is worth playing a round or two.

Awesome Mountain Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played this course for the first time over Memorial day weekend and I have to say this is a really fun course, has a mixture of shorter technical shots through the trees fir the first half of the course and then the back holes are huge and open with a few obstacles.

-Get to use your whole bag of discs to try and do different types of shots
-360 mountain views
-Course was basically empty, only one other person playing when I went there
-Grounds kept clean
-Friendly staff

Cons:

-If it just got done raining, the back 6 may be really muddy/soggy so go when its a dry day

Great Course for a YMCA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Relatively easy to navigate - challenging - good variety of shots used - restrooms - well maintained - a good hike up and down the hills

I was really impressed with this course. Mostly because it is at a YMCA and the Y's that we have here are nothing like this one. Overall, it was well worth the drive from Denver. Lots of hilly terrain and beautiful, wide open views of the mountains. A lot of fun shots and the people we ran into on the course were very nice/helpful. I assume the course gets a lot of amateur play because it is on the Y campus. Despite that, the course offered a great challenge with a lot of different shots from short to long, left to right and uphill to downhill.

Cons:

Natural tee pads - poor course signage

There were places where it was difficult to tell where to go next. They would benefit from some good tee signs and "Next Hole" signs.

Other Thoughts:

Overall gorgeous scenery and a lot of fun to play. I'm glad we made the drive out there. I did loose 1 disc on hole 18, and oddly got a call nearly 10 months later from a 12 y/o kid who was trying to return it. He said he played, so I just let him keep it.

Fun if you are in town 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Holes 14-18 are beautiful, bomber holes that encourage high soaring lines that weave between the top of the trees that run through a valley behind the maintenance support area of the property. These are the reason to play this course. The scenery is what you would expect from a course on the edge of Rocky Mountain National park and it's good to take a moment to appreciate where you are. Tee signs are clean and state par and distance. Benches abound and the course is actually pretty easy to follow once you find hole #1, but a map is recommended. Good sight lines to the Innova yellow banded baskets (a pro and a con). Great place to bring the family for a weekend, with so many other activities to keep the family busy while you golf. The course was clean and free of trash, despite the lack of trash cans on the course. Hole 18 was a 714ft bomber above trees changing color, and had the feel of a signature hole. It's a free course as well. Beginning/rec players can still play and have fun.

Cons:

Holes 3-12 largely play back and forth meandering between the cabins in point and shoot fashion, and the distances only vary between 260-340 feet. It gets mundane and you feel like you are playing the same hole, with the only variation being whether the particular hole you are on is uphill or downhill. It's rather repetitive and you might be tempted to give up on the course, but hold out until the last 5 holes! No trash cans, the tee boxes are natural and mostly uneven (some better than others). The walk from hole 18 to hole 1 is about a 3/4 mile to a mile uphill.

Other Thoughts:

If you live in (or are visiting) Estes Park, you should definitely visit, but this is not a destination course from any more than an hour away. If you want to have a great weekend with the family that isn't disc-centric, then by all means enjoy the course and the great finishing holes. Don't expect to use a lot of different shots and lines. In the end, this is a mostly enjoyable round of golf that will add to your trip to the beautiful mountains that surround the course.

Crowds and Jesus fish 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The back 9 is worth driving for. We saw Elk from nearly every tee box and you can get soft-serve ice cream across the street from the first tee box. The back 9 tucks behind the maintenance buildings and staff housing. The holes get to 400+ ft and they make them 4 par to keep your score down. Open-canapy pine forest with a couple nice topo features (hole 15 is particularly nice).

Cons:

The front 9 is pretty weak. The holes are short and stack on top of each other. The course is surrounded by roads on most sides of most holes. A steady flow of traffic from all sides make this feel surprisingly urban for its surroundings. Massive parking lots, swarms of church groups, and giant buildings really suck the life out of the first half of this course.

Other Thoughts:

Only worth the drive if you get a soft serve at the lodge and play the back 9 twice.

High Altitude Disc Golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Proper tee signs with distance. Innova Baskets are visible from tee pads thanks to the bright yellow band on top. Maps are available and navigation is mostly easy, just follow the trails. Foliage is under control, and mature pines and aspens make for very challenging lines. There are benches at many tee pads, particularly on the back 9. Elevation is utilized very much here adding another element of challenge; duh, you're playing in the Rockies and starting at 8000+ feet. That being said, the scenery here is absolutely gorgeous. The course starts easy and gets very challenging by the back 9, culminating with the 714 foot downhill bomb on 18. I like the flow. Restrooms are accessible at the main administrative building at the camp and are much nicer than most restrooms you find at a disc golf course. Free to play, discs available for rental for a $10 deposit. A great place to fit a round in before visiting Rocky Mountain National Park.

Cons:

A lot of point and shoot holes. The trees keep it from being a cakewalk, but there's only 1 dogleg. Some tee pads need to be leveled better. The layout is not optimal, the basket for 18 is quite far from the beginning of the course. If you're going to get lost, it will be between 13 and 14. Also it's easy to mistake 17's basket for 16's.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great place to play. I wish there was a little more creativity in the course design, but other than that I don't have a whole lot that I can say about this course that's very bad. I love playing mountain courses like this one so come on up and let the plastic fly through the Rocky Mountain air!

YMCA of the Rockies 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

A pretty fun course overall. It starts out in the trees and moves out into a more open area. Great uses of elevation (except for a couple straight uphill holes) and decent tree obstacles especially near the beginning. From hole 13 on is a lot of fun - all downhill and several bomber holes. Also the scenery is about as fantastic as you can imagine.

Cons:

No concrete Tee pads. Hole 12 is a God awful 350' straight uphill hole. Long walk from 1st tee box to 18th hole.

Other Thoughts:

You should park at Dorsey Pond (near the 18th hole) and walk to the 1st tee so you don't have to make the walk when you're already tired from a whole round of 18. Definitely pick up a map from the Sweet Memorial building near the 1st tee. I felt like it wasn't too difficult to get around, but I am already very familiar with the YMCA layout. You would probably be alright without a map, but its right next to the first tee and its free. Overall a really fun, decently challenging course. Good for all levels of players.

Beautiful Scenery 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This course is on the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park and is absolutely gorgeous.
-A good amount of trees for obstacles. You aren't forced to throw exact lines but you do have to avoid the trees.
-Can get a map of the course, would recommend it.
-The back 9 is great. Some tricky greens, elevation changes, length, more obstacles. If the whole 18 was like the back 9 it might even be a 4.
-The course gets some use but definitely isn't crowded.
-Tees have hole # and par to aid navigation.
-Nice baskets.
-The course is in good shape and maintenance.
-The Y has so many things to do. Camping and cabins!
-You shouldn't lose a disc here but there are some taller grass areas and you could always get hung up in a pine tree.

Cons:

-Without the map and this site you would have a hard time finding the start of this course and navigating it. Some of the fairways are too close for comfort so keep your eyes open. Also, it doesn't really loop back to the start. You have a little walk to get back to the lot.
-The front 9 is pretty short and not too challenging.
-Don't play here if you're not in somewhat decent physical shape. Lots of hills and rocky, rugged terrain.
-Can be quite windy up here in the mountains.
-The tees are natural and can be a little slippery or rutted. They aren't bad tho.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good fun round. I wouldn't drive all the way up to Estes just for disc golf but there is plenty of other fun stuff to do. Remember, your discs will fly differently at nearly 8000 feet than they do where you live. This course is definitely buoyed by it's scenery, it isn't the best use of this beautiful land and certainly isn't the top priority for the Y.

The Back Nine Is Better But The Rockies Are Impressive! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course plays on this giant YMCA complex. This not the YMCA you're thinking about back home! This is one gigantic complex with probably 100 buildings and multitudes of activities going on at all hours during the summer. Then you surround the whole area with the towering, craggy Rocky Mountains and the whole experience is pretty amazing. The scenery really is breathtakingly beautiful.

I really like this course starting with hole # 9. The back nine feature some interesting basket placements, more challenging terrain to play on and is generally more fun. The baskets are great although a little hard to spot on the front nine even with the yellow rims. The signs have just the basic information, nothing too impressive.
I thought # 9 was a fun little throw, about 241' downhill to a basket hidden just behind a small pine tree. It's an ACE run but you gotta have the touch. The back nine features some tricky shot placements through the pines, down the canyons and is generally a lot longer than the front nine.

Cons:

Navigation is a little nightmarish. The first tee is difficult to find. The second nine is tricky to navigate. The tee pads could definitely use some work. They're natural. Some are fine but a few are rutted and rough. I thought the first eight holes were a little boring and all seemed a little too similar. All were about the same distance, straight with a few pine trees for obstacles.
And # 18 finishes clear on the other side of the complex from where you started.

Other Thoughts:

I'd love to see them put in some concrete patio blocks for tee pads. That would be a simple little way to really spice this course up. It's the only course around and seems to get quite a bit of play. There's some good challenge here. The scenery is second to none. I recommend you try if you're in the area. I also recommend you visit Rocky Mountain National Park while you at it.

Pros:

The scenery is amazing.
There are 18 holes, the back 9 gets challenging.

The park and area is very clean.

Cons:

The tees could use some work.
Easy to get confused without a map.
The markings from hole to hole aren't clear.
Could of exposed the course to more dangers that the nature allows for.

Other Thoughts:

If there was clear signs from when you enter the park to the start of the course that would be very friendly and convenient for players just stopping by on their vacations. Some of the hole markings could be fixed or replaced but otherwise the park and the scenery was well worth the small detour to play in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.

Don't let the front 9 fool you 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful course in the mountains. 1 through 9 are all shorter holes offering what I would caution is a warmup to the back 9. The front lodge offers a map and not many will make the trip up to this more secluded area on any given day so traffic is rarely a problem.

Cons:

a few holes criss cross and the pins in the back 9 are hard to find without a map (they are available). Don't fool yourself, this is a mountain course the back 9 are up and down the hills and on harsher terrain (wear hiking shoes if possible). For a 700 long hole 18 really doesn't take you back to anywhere near 1. There is a looooooooong walk from the end back to your car if you parked near to 1.

Other Thoughts:

Come prepared for the mountain disc golf course experience. This means good shoes, WATER, and a camera. There is a lot of good scenery in the area which may include some of the local wildlife (We saw a mountain goat at about 50 yards). If you've never played a full mountain course before this is a great course to start with to get your bearings for what they can offer.

Challenging and Spectacular 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Gorgeous views of the Rockies and a very challenging back nine. The front nine, while fairly short, has a number of trees to work around and is a good warm- up for the back nine. Not heavily played and not a lot of other activities close to the course unless you go way off line near the roads.

Cons:

The tee boxes are a challenge- footing is uneven and some fair erosion problems, but you could usually throw from slightly to the side of the box and get good footing. The posted pars and distances don't match up to the ones on this review. The thistles on #18 are pretty thick and prickly - wear more than ankle socks!

Other Thoughts:

Be SURE to get a course map- and it still has a few tricky holes to find. A LONG uphill walk to the parking lot, but overall a great mountain golf experience.
Another thing that proved handy for us - a telescoping golf ball retriever. We got a disc caught 25 feet up a thick evergreen and were able to climb partway up and knock it out with the retriever.

Retarded Monkey 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 7, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great views in all directions, and if your like me and focused on the course you could forget to step back and enjoy them.

I played the course twice with a buddy of mine, we figured since we drove all the way up there, lets make a day of it so we ate a small lunch after the first round of 18 and played again.

We saw maybe 8 other disc golfers on the whole course throughout the 5 hours we spent up there and at no point we were waiting on anyone or had anyone waiting on us.

Cons:

Tee boxes definitely need some help, but for the most part didn't have any issues.

The first hole was difficult to find (mainly because it was our first time there and we didn't know our way around the HUGE YMCA complex) however after that a blind and retarded monkey could find his way around. I don't understand why others are saying the course is hard to navigate, most all tee boxes are visible from the previous basket except for 14, We actually had a guy ask us where the back 9 started because he couldn't find it, no joke the 10th tee box and basket are visible from the 7th basket and all of the 8th and 9th holes.

Other Thoughts:

I would actually rate this course a 3.75 if that was an option. Also this course played as a par 61 not 54 or 57 like this website says, the front 9 is all par 3's and the back nine has 7 pars 4's

The measurement seemed to be a bit off on the 10th hole but it makes for several birdie opportunities on the back 9.

Long course made for a great workout as you are in the mountains and dealing with elevation change.

Bring good shoes its a bit rugged which should be expected on a mountain course.

The only other thing is that the 18th basket is a good 10 minute walk back to the car (if you parked near 1) I understand that this is not ideal, however I cant believe how many reviews I've read here and people are complaining about walking back to the car. Walking is good exercise and if you don't like to walk you probably shouldn't be playing disc golf.

High altitude, Nice views 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 13, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beautiful course with gorgeous views of Rocky Mountain National Park. This is a long course, and you are more than likely not going to see any other disc players throughout the entire day. This is an 18 hole mountain course with minimal elevation drops/gains. The course does provide a quality amount of trees and obstacles on every hole. The course also provides users with a map, which is necessary to find your way around. This course has a wide variety in the distance-range of shots and many long holes, but does not require too many technical shots. Almost all of the technical aspects of the course come from trees which are random placed throughout a straight fairway. Certainly a couple hole in one opportunities.

Cons:

DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT THIS COURSE WITHOUT THE MAP!! Even with the map, my friend and I had a very hard time navigating the course. It weaves through a summer camp and has a very unintuitive setup. The course also ends about as far as one could get from their car (and hole one) and requires a 10 minute walk back to the car. The only real issue with the holes is that almost every hole was a straight shot. Instead of having fairways requiring certain skills, fairways were straight and simply had trees in the way to create the variety of shots. This got boring after a bit, as the back 9 (besides 16) requires the same exact long and straight shot.

Other Thoughts:

A great course to get out there and play if you're in the area.

Pros:

Beautiful Colorado scenery. Lots of trees makes for tough shots/decisions. Back 9 are very long and challenging (lots of 400+ foot baskets). All tee boxes have the hole number and par for that particular hole (except 18).

Cons:

Very poorly marked; it is imperative that you go to the check-in desk and get a map. With the map the course was tough to navigate, without it it'd be nearly impossible. Some of the dirt tee-boxes were dug out and odd shaped, but it wasn't too big of an issue.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course to play, although I was a bit let down by the lack of creativity on a lot of the holes. Virtually every hole except 15 or 16 was a straight shot from the tee with trees in the way to make for a more difficult shot. Glad we decided to go, but this was my least favorite of Colorado's "Mountain Courses"
