Essentially 2 9 hole courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 23, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

As one who plays East coast, wooded courses, I wasn't expecting anything but grip and rip in the Kansas wind. And when I drove up I was like, 'Yep, just what I thought.' Long fairways with just a few trees to block your way to the basket. And it was windy!

This course has runway length tee pads which were superb! Im not tall, but take long strides and these were great pads. The use of multiple basket placements on almost every hole is also a excellent plus

But that's only half the story (or course!). Most of the first 9 holes are tiiiight, way tighter than I had expected.

#1 is a 400' decently wide shot that narrows as it approaches the basket. The last 150' is very tight, ending up with a basket that is guarded by a ring of small trees.

#2 gets even tighter. Oh My! Even after you get off the tee, there is one lone (small tree) that you must navigate to reach the basket. Personally, I'd take the tree out. If you hit it, you are mostly within putting range (30-35'). Take it out and make it an ACE run

#3 exits the woods. You throw a shot over a berm to a basket about 275' way, but guarded

#4 I actually a hard grip and rip shot, 400' to a basket (left or right) that can't be seen. It does take a bit of a touch shot to get to it.

#5 took us a while to find. What looks like the next tee is actually #7. You have to head back and to the right (toward #3) But it's another relatively short shot, little forehand toss.

#6 brings you back to the tiiiight butt-clench shots. Really great tough hole. Scary off the tee as the trees are in your face

#7 is sort of open, very short hole. Take a hyzer/anhzer shot toward the basket tucked into the woods.

#8 relatively short easy hole (when basket is in the short. Just a flick shot

#9 I really liked this hole. Have a natural hedge/wall you have to throw over, but not too high or you'll catch the canopy. Almost a forced triple mando. Also, don't walk through it, there's a fence in the foliage you'll trip on!

#10 is another fairly easy, quasi-long shot to a raised basket

#11 From this point on, put down the mid-ranges and fairway drivers. They won't be needed. It's is grip-rip-repeat. through the rest of the course

Though the rest is open and long, there are just enough trees to keep you from going hog-wild. If the grass is mowed, it would be outstanding for rollers.

Cons:

None really. The course worked all of my game - short, long, anyhzer, hyzer, forehand...you name it. Navigation was mostly very easy except for holes #5 and #8 (I think).

With the final 8 holes being wide open, you will need to be on the lookout for errant shots if lots of people are playing.

Other Thoughts:

Place is gorgeous, just a wonderfully scenic place to spend time throwing plastic at metal. And not super difficult. My daughter (22) who does't play much was able to navigate it and have fun, even on the monster long holes.

Little Apple 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 7, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Large course map before tee one.
+ Tee signage is first rate. Very informative with routes and footage.
+ Multiple pin placements on most all holes.
+ Practice basket by parking lot.
+ Ample parking if course is busy.
+ Discatcher baskets are in great shape.
+ Large concrete tee pads are some of the best I have ever thrown from. Level with the ground and a finish made for throwing disc golf.
+ Ample trash cans scattered around course.
+ Benches on about every other hole.
+ Beautifully maintained turf.
+ Front nine is some what technical with a few very fun wooded holes.
+ Back nine let's you air it out amongst many majestic beautiful trees.
+ After hole 10 a short walk to parking lot to grab goodies if need be.
+ On back nine roadways encompass course making for challenging O.B.
+ Enough bomber holes to keep the big arms happy.
+ Hole 13 on long placement is a great challenging island hole.

Cons:

- Course plays along and over roadways a few times so take care.
- Can become somewhat busy during prime throwing hours.
- During warm seasons mosquitos can be very annoying.

Other Thoughts:

This course will challenge most any disc golfer at whichever level. This is a very well thought out course done professionally from design to signage to tee pads. This course is a must play when traveling through Kansas. Also just a short distance away are two other great courses. Warner, a top rated 9 hole course and Tuttle Creek a quality 18 hole course known by many. If you have the chance check out all three you won't be sorry. The city of Manhattan, Ks should be proud of the quality of disc golf courses they have brought to the midwest.

When talking disc golf courses Manhattan, Ks has got it going on.

Great course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Variety is the spice of life! There were wooded holes as well as open holes. Even the open holes had obstacles. So many courses I play, the designer feels like the holes must be long to be challenging. This course strayed from that theory, and because of that we thoroughly enjoyed this course. Well worth the trip from Topeka. Hole layout was easy to follow. Course is well maintained.

Cons:

A few holes were a little hard to find the tee, so it would be nice to have a little more direction, but it still was not bad.

Other Thoughts:

This will be a favorite course!

Pros:

Great variety of hole shapes and some real intimidating lines. The flow is excellent and easy to navigate even without local or map.

Cons:

No indication from tee of pin placement. But I will say most of the time it was pretty evident.

Other Thoughts:

The course had some well thought out fairways that make you commit to your shot. I can only imagine how tough it will look and be after all the trees have leaves. If you are in the area this is the course to play.

Classic quality par 3. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The short holes had challenge. Variety was enough where I really wish I had carried my full bag.

Amazing signage. Disc Fanatics of Kansas know how to make seriously nice signs and tee pads.

2 pin positions.

When playing the course you are confident that this course was set up by disc golfers and not a parks department. The holes are quality even when there was not much to work with.

Ribbons tied to many of the baskets to guide you 2 the next tee. There are also a few navigational aides to help you through the front 9.

Cons:

You really have to search to find flaws.

No way to denote pin position, However, there are only a few holes where this is any issue.

Many holes in the front 9 are very short. When you look at hole info it shows you only the long position. Hole 2 for example was only 167 feet in A position. I used my putter a lot.

The flow is not as good in the back 9, but is not a major issue.

Other Thoughts:

Front is short and technical. Back 9 is open and long enough to pull out drivers. This course is a great little par 3. Nothing special, but no glaring flaws. I don't know that I will remember much about this course, but I have nothing to complain about.

Pros:

beautiful 18 hole course with all kinds of variety.
Well layed out with the first 9 holes being nearly all tunnel shots that are very challenging and fun.
Back 9 holes are gorgeous long drive plays with fewer trees but they are much larger.

Cons:

i cant even think of anything i didnt like other than i had a little trouble finding the first tee because i had never been there before. would have been nice if there were a few signs directing to hole #1 when you first pull into the park so you can park right next to the first tee.

Other Thoughts:

HIGHLY recommend to any skill level as this course is definently in the Top 3 for me on overall experience. very impressed.

Course is kept in great condition.
Great signage and map.
Really nice baskets.
Great variety of shots.there are tunnel shots (both tight and very tight), hyzers and an-hyzers, long bombs,S curves. There is OB on several holes that make them play a little bit tougher.
Very reachable pins at some of the placements.
Great variety of teeing off with drivers, fairway drivers, mids, and some putters depending on the basket layout.
multiple pin position on most holes for great variety.
Uses the trees very well.
best tee pads i have ever played on.
has nice benches and trash cans every couple of holes.
more than ample parking.
nice practice basket right at the start of the course.
can access several holes close to the start if its backed up at 1's tee box.

Cons:

No elevation. not the courses fault just where it happens to be.
can get pretty muddy on the front 9 after snow or rains.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course that offers a challenge to every level of play.
With the variety of pin placements the course can be setup to play pretty long and more difficult for tournaments.
Baskets get rotated monthly so that is nice to have variety.
Definitely check out this course if your in Manhattan.

Very nice! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great signage! Accurate maps and ample navigational aids both at the beginning of the course and on the tee pad signs. Signs are bright and clear.

Good shot variety. I never once got bored throwing on this course. In spite of the lack of elevation, different types of shots are used very well to keep the round interesting. The back 9 opens up a lot and gives you plenty of chances to open up and throw.

Grippy, nice concrete tee pads all in good shape, as I would expect for a new course.

Great variety of shots, including some fun tunnel shots. There isn't a lot of elevation out here, but the woods are used very well and make for a fun round.

This course is very spread out and doesn't play over itself very often, which is really nice.

The course is in a very large park (that I was totally unaware existed here during the 2 years I lived in Manhattan), but I didn't see many non-DG players out here. Just one couple walking a dog. That might be different when school is in session, but it was pretty dead non DG-wise when I was out there in July.

Plenty of parking! I didn't see many benches or other creature comforts out there, but I think most of us are here to play, not sit on benches. :) Not that there's anything wrong with that!

The scenery on this course is nice for the most part. I really like how the woods were incorporated in the first 9 holes, very nice.

Cons:

Holy roads, Batman! The back 9 plays over and over and over the gravel roads that cut through the park. Not only can it chew up your disc, they were actually rather busy when I played.

You're also playing very perilously close to private property on many holes, some of which was slightly unkempt. Don't go onto private property to get discs! (Or throw into the abandoned refrigerator I saw!)

There really isn't much elevation to be spoken of out here. That's not the course's fault per se, but just be aware of it before you come out.

Other Thoughts:

This course is right off K-177, before you cross over the Kansas River to get into Manhattan. Hang a right at that sign that says "Zeandale", then an immediate left and there should be a sign for the park.

This was a very fun play. The layout was exceptionally well done, and it was just a blast. Manhattanites are lucky to have two very nice and very different courses so close by -- this was a totally different experience than Warner Park, which is also a great course.

Manhattan is a neat town, and it has grown a TON in the last decade. Combine this with Warner Park and hit up the other entertainment options in town, and you can easily make a fun daytrip out of it from Kansas City. I went to school at K-State and it was neat to come back and play back in Manhattan. Great course!

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New tee boxes and better hole maps make for a much less confusing game. (not every hole yet)
difference in the front 9 and back 9 make for a good practice course for everyone.

Cons:

Very hard to play when ground is wet, due to dirt tee boxes and muddy holes.

Other Thoughts:

Being a college student, I enjoy this course because it is close enough to campus that I can drive there quickly and it is far enough from the "city" I get a breath of fresh air.

In process of being expanded to 18 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is in process of being upgraded to 18 holes. Temporary tee signs are up now as well as tee box spray painted in the grass. Appears as though concrete tees may be in the plans.
19th basket for practice.

Some holes have multiple placements.

Cons:

It's in process, i.e. not done yet.
Hoping they will add concrete tees, signs, etc. Seems like they intend to.

Other Thoughts:

Expecting to play 9 holes and found out it was increased to 18 - nice!
First 9 have mix of open shots and holes cut through new woods.
1 - tunnel shot, saw at least 2 placements.
2 - very tight tunnel shot
3 - great use of embankment
4 - open shot that needs to hit a hole. Reminded me of the bamboo wall for the USDGC.
5 - moderate trees with another opening that must be hit.
6 - tunnel shot
7 - short hole with a very protected green
8 - nice S-curve shot required to make par
9 - another hole that must be hit, this time closer to the tee
10-18 back into the original part of the park.
Moderately wooded that requires various shots, hyzer, anyhzer, long and straight, etc.

When completed, expect this to rise to a 3.5 course.

No elevation change, and most are wide open shots. There are no trash cans, so there was a lot of waste laying around the tees. Dirt pads that were at some points hard to find, even though, they weren't to far apart.

Pros:

This course is clearly marked, and has nice obstacles and distances that vary from hole to hole.

Cons:

The course had many piles of trash around the tee boxes. Trash cans would be a great addition. There are no tee pads, and this is a big draw back. The course is also completely flat and offers no challenge as far as elevation.

Other Thoughts:

While the trees are fun to throw around, the course is not nearly as good as the nearby Warner park. If you are looking for something easy, go here. If not, go to the other side of Manhattan for Warner.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 20, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course plays very well without any navigation issues so there is no need for a map. The baskets are very nice and there are fairly nice tee signs at every hole that show basket location and distance. The grass is frequently mowed and the course is well maintained. At every single hole there is a bag on the tee sign for trash and there is also an on-site restroom. There is no risk of losing a disc here so you can let it rip without having to worry about much. The football fields next to the course could be a nice place to practice some drives. There is rarely much traffic here and often times it will seem like you have the course to yourself. Although it is a fairly open course, wind is not usually an issue due to the nice location.

Cons:

The is ZERO elevation and the teepads are dirt. This course only has 9 holes with single placements and some of the signs are innacurate, I believe this is due to some changes that were made after the course was in place. There really isnt anything technical about any of the holes here other than maybe #8, but most obstacles can be fairly easily avoided. There is an issue between #4 and #5 where #5 is a little close to the basket for #4. Another potential issue is the playground to the left of #6 with a grill and picnic table.

Other Thoughts:

Although my review and rating may not reflect it, I play this course a lot and enjoy it. It's just not one I would reccomend to someone pressed for time who may not be able to hit all of the courses in town. It is great for quick games and to get out of the house and clear your mind.

My god! Manhattan has a course now, near downtown no less. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good recreational to intermediate level course. Flow is very logical. Good signage. Holes have decent distances here for the intended demographic. No hole in the park is shorter than 290'. Roads throughout the course are used well to mark OB, and depending on the hole, you'll have trouble either left or right. Plenty of cushion between holes. Great for players who hate losing plastic as there is virtually no risk of a lost disc here. Just a hop and a skip from Manhattan's main tourist area. Bathroom on site.

Cons:

It's flat as a pancake. There are plenty of trees to hit on some of the holes, but advanced players can easily steer around them. One space conflict with the playground on Hole 6. Has some lefty bias in the design, but nothing serious. Dirt tees which could get icky after hard rains.

Other Thoughts:

Fairmont sort of reminds me of a 9 hole version of Tulsa's Course Dovillio with the flat terrain, Discatchers and OB streets. Not the most impressive course, but it made good use of what there was to work with. Some parks departments might have tried to squeeze more holes into a space like this, and I'm glad that wasn't the case here. Its also great to see that with this course, and the new course opening up at Warner Park, the folks in Manhattan can actually have some disc golf baskets to throw at without leaving town. Good for a lunchtime nine and just across the river from downtown on K-177.

Decent Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fairmont is a decent course not far from the Mall on the east side of Manhattan, KS. Easy to find and close to downtown, although enough out-of-town (over a large bridge) it feels secluded. The facilities are great, with a restroom on site (near hole 1), trash receptacles, and well groomed grounds.

Now about the course. This course has some nice, mature trees that present good obstacles. The sparingly driven on roads are used fairly well throughout the course as OB. The course is nestled in valley of sorts in the midst of many mature trees. This helps to lessen the effect of wind in an area (middle of Kansas) that can otherwise be very windy.

There is a football field on site near hole 1, which I think is fantastic (too bad every course doesn't have one). Great place for practicing your drives and measuring distance.

Cons:

Not enough variety or elevation. Total elevation change throughout all 9 holes is probably about 2 feet. This course is completely flat. Many anhyzer holes favor the sidearm player. At least 4 of the holes are distinctly anhyzer, with only 1 real hyzer hole (hole 1). The rest are mostly straight shots.

Tee pads are dirt, and this course only contains 9 holes.

Other Thoughts:

It's nice to have another decent course in the area. Fairmont is nothing spectacular but provides a good course to practice your throw without having to get too technical.

I recommend both River Pond and Warner Park as better courses to play in the area.
