Dune City 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Feels like Western Michigan out here, playing DG on a Sand Dune

Fun Design
Good mix of Open and Wooded Discgolf offered at McDill

1 2 & 9 allow big Airout Drives

4 & 5 play mostly Flat out on the Peninsula Bottom, but are Fun Ace Runs with nice Water Views

Lots of Ace Runs on 3 6 7 & 8 as you throw Up and Down the DuneHill numerous times

Good Teesigns
Pictures of the Hole, with a Green View picture also, and they show Next Tee placement

On the 'Green Circle' Bike Trail

Cons:

Bad Shots on 4 could go swimming in this Plover River Pond

2 & 8 are currently missing their Teesigns. Baskets are in View from the Teepads though

The Two Downhill Shots and the Two Uphill Shots in the Woods are pretty Similar

Filler for a Finisher. Completely Open and Flat, bringing you back towards the Lot

Other Thoughts:

Rubber Mat Teepads are Typical for a DGCourse in this part of the Sconny

Mach3s are Old n Worn, and most these look to have been Repaired in numerous ways, giving this Dgc more character

Really gives me the feeling of Western Michigan out here

A Fun Little Gem in the Point area

Not a showplace 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easy to navigate in a nice setting. You could see water from 3 holes but it would take a really bad shot to wet a disc. I was there in early spring, Limited foliage made it easy to find discs in the rough. Very sandy-mud and standing water are unlikely.

Cons:

Laminated paper signs were stapled to posts. A couple were still intact and legible. Generally not wel-kept. The basket bottom was missing completely on hole 9. Extremely sandy with little grass.

Other Thoughts:

I saw an osprey take a fish out of the pond and deuced 5 of 18 holes. A very pleasant experience.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

McDill Pond DGC is located next to the pond on a disc golf exclusive piece of property. The course is free to play and open year round. It won't take you more than a half hour to 45 minutes to play a round, depending on how quick you move and how busy the course is.

The baskets are old DGA Mach 3's. These are definitely showing their age but catch as good as a Mach 3 can catch. Plenty serviceable for a short course like this though. The tee pads are rubber mats like Standing Rocks, just not as nice. These are better than natural and serve their purpose just fine.

Tee signs are now on every hole. They must've just put them in this spring. The signs have the hole #, distance and a photo map of the hole from the perspective of standing on the tee. They show the next tee and any OB or hazards that apply. Nicely done after years of nothing but a wood post to mark the tee.

There's a good mix of elevation here.Holes 3 and 7 play downhill and holes 6 and 8 play back up the hill. hole 2 is slightly uphill as well. The rest are flat.

Another pro for McDill is the fact that it's almost never wet. Very sandy soil sucks up all the water in this area (except Mead Park) which makes this a favorite of mine in the early spring.

The pond can come into play on hole 4 but you'd really have to shank your shot or massively overshoot the basket to reach it. Your main challenge is going to be placement on the wooded holes. Wind usually not too big of a factor.

The course design is very well done for the little piece of land they had available to them. Great flow from hole to hole. You won't get lost here, that's for sure. The course starts and ends right by the parking lot. Well done all around designwise.

Cons:

The course can be very busy during peak hours. This is the "chucker" course for the area.

The tee pads are starting to show their age. There's cracks starting to form around the edges with pieces breaking off. These are also pretty lumpy compared to the other nearby courses with rubber mats. You don't need a crazy run up for most holes so it's not a huge deal. It is mildly annoying though.

No restroom onsite currently, but that may be because of the Covid. I think there normally is though, can't remember for sure right now.

The rough is starting to get pretty gnarly in the woods. Most notably left of the pin on hole 3. A giant tree went down last year or the year before and it's still there, gobbling up discs.

Other Thoughts:

If you're in the area it's a quick spin. Fun too. Only 5 minutes off of I-39 if you're traveling through. Good warm up course for both Yulga and Standing Rocks. It's my favorite of the Point area 9 holers for sure. I have no idea how I haven't reviewed this yet, I've been playing it for 10 years. Better late than never.

Super fun 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

good course flow
challenging shots
high risk/reward with water hazards & guarded pins
cool elevation changes
cool terrain changes from grass to mud to sand and rocks
well designed

Cons:

if you're picky about having perfect tee pads or perfect baskets you might find some negative things to say but I totally enjoyed my round here. I was pleasantly surprised and have nothing negative to say.

Other Thoughts:

I just stopped by at this park quick thinking I was just going to check it out and only brought one disc but had a super fun round. This course is interesting to play and feels different than some of the other courses around there.

An awesome 9 holer!!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I am from Ohio and was in the area with one putter. That being said, this course was very fun. I love how the designer used elevation and trees.

Likes: rubber pads- durable and were not slippery.
Baskets- caught very well. There are 2 rows of chains.
Flow: never got lost once. Had a great time.

Cons:

No water, signs are there but nothing on them. There are some signs outside of the park showing that there is disc golf course but they are small.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I loved it. First time throwing in a week and it was good to get out. The course was fun and great use of elevation. Also a very sandy course. Definitely coming back to the course in the future.

Short, fun, scenic... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course set next to McDill Pond, in Stevens Point.

DGA Mach 3 baskets, all in good repair and caught well. One pin position per hole. A couple were set in spots that could cause rollaways, which adds the intrigue.

Rubbery foamy type tee pads. They're better than natural, but were a touch slick when covered with the sand that's in the area. One tee per hole.

While there's nothing too long here, the holes are fun. There's a bit of elevation on several holes, that along with trees, make for some nice forced lines. You could play most of the course with a putter/mid, but it's certainly not baskets in a field. Wind is also going to be a possibility with the pond (which is more of a lake) surrounding the course.

Cons:

As stated above, the tee pads can be treacherous when sandy, and probably wet.

Navigation isn't the easiest, especially from 6-9. The tee signs are pretty much nonexistent, or extremely beat up. There's not any long walks between holes, so at some point, you'll get to all of them.

Other Thoughts:

I found this to be a quite fun little 9. Plenty of different shots, and with the pond/lake behind it, some nice scenery. Definitely a place I could see myself playing quite a bit if I lived in the area.

When looking for the course, make sure to look for the yellow gates, as the sign saying "disc golf" is quite small and easy to miss.

A favorite of mine 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 11, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I find this course fun to play. There is variety and interest. I usually play through twice to make it 18. It's no superstar but it's fun. Holes are shorter for the most part and the scenery along the water is nice.

Not alot of technical prowess needed to enjoy the course, yet can't be careless with shots either. Good for family or casual play.

Cons:

It's a more "rustic" course when it comes to tees and signs and might take some getting used to but once you are, it's fun to play.

Other Thoughts:

The first couple holes are more open and in an area of tall grass / weeds. It's maybe more rugged than other courses but not characteristic of the rest of the course.

My one and only ace is on this course! ;-)

Not bad. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Ace and birdie runs
-New tees
-In town
-Free

Cons:

-Sandy and dirty.
-Vandalized often.
-Pond isn't filled in, making it look bad. Pond will be filled in soon.
-Most of the signs are missing.
-Almost NO grass in the entire course. All of it is mostly sand.
-Lots of chuffs and potsmokers, watch out.

Other Thoughts:

More of a stoner course than anything. Easy birdies on every hole and I have aced here on hole 8. Don't wear sandals, your shoes will be filled with sand and your feet will be dirty. The stoners act very weird and might steal your discs if you throw them into the woods or the huge ditch on the left of hole 1. Otherwise, it's good for a quick game and when the pond is filled in, watch out for water hazards.

Getting Better 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice rubber pads which are a trademark of the point area
-Nice baskets with one exception
-A place for tee signs
-Good elevation changes on a few holes give the course variety and challenge. A few fast greens.
-Many ace and birdie runs
-Parking
-Wooded but not to the point that you might lose a disc or get too frustrated.
-This course is actually in the city unlike the other courses around. It is good for quick round.
-Good flow, even with the missing signs navigation was pretty easy.

Cons:

-It appears as though vandals have affected this course even more than Yulga. There are posts which appear to have tee signs but no signage at all. Hole 5's basket was pretty battered. There was some trash on the course.
-It is sandy all over and that gets on your discs and in your shoes. It could also cause traction problems and erosion problems on the hills. There is literally no grass on this course.
-It is overall not too challenging, fairly short.

Other Thoughts:

There isn't too much to say about this course. I think it is a good alternative to Yulga and Standing Rocks which take a bit of driving to get to if you live within the city. It is a fun pitch and putt. Hopefully the vandals will stay away and the club here can keep it maintained. It is a very quick round and I would recommend a stop. I would play here if I lived in Point. It is a beginners course for sure but you can learn a bit about hitting lines and elevation throws here. Another thanks to Randy for the design and hard work.

McDill "POND"erings 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 28, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Nice signs with Hole # distance, map of the hole.

2) Nice elevation change used on this course on 4 or 5 of the holes.

3) Garbage cans (5 gallon pails) at the tees which seems to be a local trend.

4) Rubber tees are better than dirt or grass but not perfect.

5) Nice shot shaping needed on the wooded holes of 5-8.

6) Fun course because every hole is birdiable for an average disc golfer. These courses are always fun for me, because it is always fun to park holes.

7) Nice balance of foliage density with a couple wide open holes, a couple tight wooded holes and a couple with a few obstacles to work around. I love balance even though I prefer tunnel and tighter wooded holes.

8) Beginner friendly for the most part, but it will still present a challenge to the new disc golfer. The wooded holes might be a little tough for beginners because they wouldn't be used to throwing with such elevation change.

9) Nice shot shaping required and a nice variety in shots needed. You will need to throw a few different shots but overall the course is very hyzer friendly.

Cons:

1) Tee pads do have some issues with the gravel underneath mostly. Any sand or soil that gets on the rubber also becomes a hazard.

2) Compaction and erosion are evident and could lead to issues when the course is wet. There are a lot of bare spots on the course especially on the wooded holes.

3) Course is relatively short meaning there is not much chance to just rip some drives.

4) The turf on the flatter open holes is spotty at best, lots of weeds, some ruts from poor or no grading, and can lead to a lot of poor footing on your upshots or putts.

5) Vandalism seems to be prevalent here or maybe thats just how dirty the course feels.

6) Distance variety is a little lacking with 7 of the 9 holes playing within about 50' of each other and only two outliers at 190' and 330'. I know it is due to property constraints but I definitely like to see more variety to force people to throw different shots and use different discs.

Other Thoughts:

McDIll Pond DGC is named after what body of water? I didn't see any water . . . at least not "on the course".

It was a fun course on a unique property for sure. Those holes with the elevation change in the woods were fun to throw for sure.

It lacks the beauty of a naturally good course but it presents a challenge on each hole that makes all the holes play differently. This would make me return again someday if I was nearby.

McDill Pond 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 28, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1) there is some good foliage as obsticals.
2) for being 9 holes has good mix of open and wooded holes.
3) holes are well spaced.
4) some well protected pins.
5) has some good elevation changes.

Cons:

1) some fairways are fairly overgrown.
2) hole 9 plays on the gravel access road and can really tear up discs.

Other Thoughts:

the only reason i played this corse is because it was literally a discs throw from my step-sisters house where i was visiting. and to be honest i was impressed by the course. from what it looked on hole 1 it didnt look good. but as i played i realized the potential the course could have, with some better matenince the course could be pretty darn good. i ended up playing the course 3 times that day. overall a fun little course.

Patch St./McDill Resurrection 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course has re-opened and offers a good mix of what some of the other 18-hole courses in the area have to offer on a smaller, central location. A few holes have some up and down elevation that enriches the McDill course experience greatly.

Cons:

The course is only nine-holes and doesn't take very long to play.
The short pin placement on hole #6 is an easy deuce, but the long placement is a hard par shot.

Other Thoughts:

This course has undergone a 'renovation' and some of the holes are different then in the past. I really like the current layout of the course and it is the course that I frequent most often in the area since it re-opened in August of 2010.

Nine Hole Ace/Birdie Run 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Every hole is a chance for RHBH throwers to park their favorite putter or make an ace run. Good place to play a superfast round of golf. Scenic holes near the pond. Black tee mats have good footing. Two hills uphill and two downhill, with a few other more subtle elevation changes on the course.

Cons:

You can throw virtually the same throw on every hole. After the first hole it only gets easier, almost too easy. Signs seem extra prone to vandals. Only 9 holes, one set of tees, and difficulty is very low.

Other Thoughts:

It's nice having another course in the Stevens Point area. This one shut down in 2003 and has finally reopened. We should try to keep the course nice this time around.

Decent course in the center of the city 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A 9-hole course that re-opened after being gone for a few years or so. The first hole is a dogleg left and you do not want to go left as there is a gully that you will have a very tough time getting out of. Besides that hole, the holes are fairly straightforward with a couple being behind a few trees.

Cons:

More wooded than most courses, and the trails/fairways have not been groomed in some time. Holes are not very challenging besides the plethora of trees in the course.

Other Thoughts:

Great course for beginners to go to if they do not live near Mead Park.

McDill Pond DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 17, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a great course for beginning players, the distances are short but the course design keeps play interesting and fun.

The course has a good overall flow, and has some room for a few temp holes.

Also a great place for a one-disc round.

Cons:

A couple holes are a little plain, really just connector holes for overall flow.

During the summer months the city of Stevens Point harvests weeds from McDill Pond, and heavy city equipment is permanently parked on the landing.

Other Thoughts:

Stevens Point has waited 8 years for the reopening of this course, and the time has finally come thanks to much volunteer labor.
