Pros:

Nice design/layout, for an open park course. Great concrete tees with mounted park benches. Good signage. Makes for a pretty quick round.

Cons:

An open park does not allow much to work with. several holes have no signs leave you wondering if you are playing the correct hole. Most baskets have no hole #'s.

Other Thoughts:

If Tendick Park is a 3.44 (a Nearby Course), then this course can only be a 3.0

Charming 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.289 Rating) A City Park course done right.
- UNIQUENESS - Probably my favorite aspect of the Riverside course was the variety. Four of the first five holes are relatively open shots, but starting on hole (6) the shot shaping demands really start to pick up. The wooded stretch of holes (9) thru (13) are very technically demanding. Hole (12), my favorite shot, is tight 25 foot downhill tunnel shot. In addition to the wooded holes, there are also a couple of minor water clears, pockets to shoot into, blind shots and some bomb-it opportunities. Depending on the basket placements, lines will break in both directions and I was personally greeted with an even distribution on my round. In all, I found the Riverside course to be an entertaining mix, and it required the use of every disc in my bag.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - An absolutely charming way to start a round. Hole (1) throws over the gracefully looking 60 foot wide Milwaukee River. Hole (1) had head high grass framing the right side of the fairway and had wildflowers blooming everywhere. In addition, my round was alive with scores of wildlife. During my round I saw several species of ducks, geese, deer, squirrels, rabbits and a red tailed hawk. I was impressed by the beauty of the course and it added to my round experience. Perhaps I caught Riverside at the perfect time of the year.
- CHALLENGING - I think this course is a bit more challenging than the rating indicates, although perhaps the wind I dealt with is giving me a bad read. At 5,700 feet Par 54 from the back tees, advanced players should be 3 to 4 down on average as the course will require a mix of shot shaping and power. Intermediate players will struggle to maintain even par from the backs and the short tees should challenge rec players.
- CHARACTER - Really nice sized concrete tees, and half of the holes with two of them. The pads seemed to be at least 6 x14 and got wider at the back. Great large sized, appealing and informative tee signs and seating at a majority of the holes. There were a few missing signs however (see cons). A community board with league info, unfortunately no course map. There were also alternate basket placements at every hole. I initially thought there was a practice basket driving up, but it was actually (18) basket.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - With the two sets of tees on about half of the holes, Riverside is going to allow for a fair and challenging round for a wide swath of skilled players. It's nice that the front tees take out the water hazard on (1) and (17) and also take out a big chunk of distance on the long sweeping holes like (4) and (7). In all, I think this course will keep rec thru advanced players pleased and entertained.
- MAINTENANCE - The maintenance crew that keeps this course up was doing an amazing job during the time period I visited and I hope it continues. Well mowed fairways, no trash, and wisely the areas well off the unbeaten path, were left untouched.

Cons:

The issues with Riverside are minor. I found the course to be above average in all 5 of my main review categories. (Fun Factor, Character, Uniqueness, Difficulty and Raw Beauty)
- NAVIGATION - Several holes have missing tee signs. I didn't keep track but I think there were at least six missing. There is no course map on site so be sure and download or print the DGCR map as I had to peak at it a few times. Traversing the course wasn't too bad. I probably spent no more than 10 extra minutes trying figure out the layout.
- DISCONTINUITY - There are some pretty substantial gaps in this layout. (15) to (16) is an 800 foot walk. (3) to (4) is almost 500 feet. Getting to tee (1) is also a long walk from the parking area and you have to be aware of those teeing off on (18).
- TIME PLAY - Probably not the quickest par 54 rounds. I was running between a few holes and it still took me over an hour solo. I could see four seasoned players spending 2 1/2 hours out here or more.
- WIND - The first few holes and the last few holes are mostly wide open. I was not fortunate on my visit and had to deal with 20 mph gusts. Hole (17) may seem easy on paper, but throwing into the gusts over a river and onto a blind fairway was not a pleasant felling. I really gave up on my throw and it fell 200 feet short.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite of the three courses I hit this day. Riverside starts off wonderful and also has several other memorable shots. Riverside is far from being championship caliber, but the course's challenge will definitely appeal to wide range of skill levels. Couple this with a beautiful landscape and just enough amenities, it's no wonder this course is rated as high as it is.
- RANDOM FACT - There are five courses in Wisconsin called Riverside Park. The one in West Bend (this review) is rated the highest.

Solid overall course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Well shaped and placed concrete pads.
Benches and garbage cans at most holes.
All baskets in good repair and caught well.

Holes 1,2,7,15,16,18 are wide open let 'er rip type holes for noodle arms like me. Not much difficulty, just keep it long and straight.

Hole 6 is a nice slight hyzer, ace run hole, I've been fortunate enough to be parked every time I've played here.

Hole 8 starts the more technical part of the course through the woods. Playing in early spring the trees are nowhere near budding yet but I can see this becoming a nice tunnel shot once the foliage comes in.

Holes 9-14 are my favorite part of the course. Fairways are beaten in quite nicely and the rough is not too bad if you get a bad kick.

Hole 17 I would place between a wide open bomb and slightly technical. Playing across the river, the trees on the other side may force some to play the shot higher than they want to and fade out early.

Cons:

Missing some tee signs. Not a huge deal but would make the course feel complete.

Beer bottle caps stamped into trees, stumps and earth surrounding some tee pads. Some call it art, some call it graffiti; I tend to lean towards graffiti. If we are trying to clean up the image of disc golf from a bunch of drunks or hippies out chucking frisbees in the woods, it starts with cleaning up small details like this.

Other Thoughts:

Solid course with enough challenge for seasoned players and beginners alike. Good use of available elevation and forest as well. Has made for a fun time every round I've played.

I'll leave snide remarks about the town and area out of my review as they have no bearing on the quality of disc golf that can be had at this course. ;-)

Good but not great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 4, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Originally a very mediocre 9 hole course, Riverside expanded to 18 holes a few years ago and I played the inaugural tournament.

The stretch of holes from 8-14 and #17 are exceptionally good wooded holes that offer a variety of shots and ever so slight changes in elevation. This is where the course truly stands out and challenges a player both to make good shots and to make good approaches when the tee shot fails (of course you always have to make your putts).

Cons:

The first three holes are just average, but holes 4-7 are long, unobstructed and boring. Only the big arms will reach them. I have a similar memory of the 15th and 16th, as well as #18. It is a shame that more care didn't go into the design of each hole and the overall layout (it would be very difficult to follow if I hadn't been in a tournament with locals as the guide).

There seemed to be a lot of land in the more wooded area that was going unused and it's a shame that so much of the track was devoted to a glorified distance competition. The wooded holes offered variety, what little elevation there is out there, and alternated between left, right and straight shots. The rest required only distance and it didn't matter at all if you missed way left or right (you were still going to be a long way from the pin for your second shot).

Other Thoughts:

While I did pretty well in the tourney, it's not a course that has ever screamed to me to return. It's pretty good for the area, but the area is not much fun to visit (the city itself is extremely conservative and boring, as evidenced by having the most fascist state senator).

Not a great destination for any reason.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

it was easy to navigate for the most part. Some of the holes are challenging. The river and the woods around it make for a beautiful setting.

Cons:

there were missing signs on a number of the holes and unless you're a pro some of those holes should not be a par 3. Discouraging to other disc golfers who are more casual and it's extremely hard for them.

Beautiful course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Easy to get to course with its own parking lot.
- It is a multiuse park but it feels like it is just for disc golf.
- Long and short concrete tees on almost every hole
- Some of the most beautiful disc golf tee signs that are in the game.
- The course itself has a lot of fun, challenging wooded holes with the occational wide open hole. Every hole out there has its own element to it so it really feels like you never throw the same tee shot twice.
- The course was thoughtfully designed, where the basket placement is amost ideal for every hole.
- There is a little bit of length on a handful of the holes, so there is a good opportunity for you to open up your arm when you need to.
- a lot of holes out here have a big risk reward factor. By that I mean that there are multiple ways to get to the pin, some easy and some hard, but the hard ones can really pay off so it adds another dimension to playing.
- Lots of benches

Cons:

- My only realy complaint about this course would have to be the benches. They are a permenant fixture directly behind the teepad, so if you are looking to get a long run up you cant because that is where the bench is.

Other Thoughts:

Easily one of my favorite courses in the area and Id suggest that if you are driving through the city then you should 100% stop by and play it. Its worth it.

Great Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great variety of distance and difficulty throughout the course. Long holes with tall grass and trees that come into play. Along with short easy holes with few obstacles.

All the tee's are cement and are great lengths to get a good start, along with benches on every hole, and very detailed signs on almost all of the holes.

Cons:

Can be very wet on hole's 1 and 16. still very playable but can be annoying getting everything all wet. won't hurt to pack a towel.

Navigation can be difficult as their is some walking from hole to hole, but there are signs and always people their to direct you for your first time.

Other Thoughts:

I was one of the first people to have the pleasure of playing this course before it was even 18 holes. Over the past few years i have been happy to see it develop into a wonderful course that everyone can play and i hope everyone that plays it has a great time.

LONG! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hole Length. I do prefer holes where I can air out my drivers.
Teepads. These are flared and I've never seen larger ones out there. Think: Tendick, but in an XXL size. Perhaps these were on a portion of the holes only, as I believe this course grew from 9 to 18 holes at one point.
Location.... with Slinger having closed up, and no other decent 18 hole courses (that I know of) around the Washington Co. area, this was a welcome addition.
Not too crowded.
Water hazzards. There are two shots over a creek you have to make when playing from the pro's. Nice design implementation!
Tee signs are very well put together.

Cons:

The only thing that I would pick on here is that the pro pads just "felt" like the only option to play from. I don't generally play from anything but the am's, but I felt like the course was designed around the longer tee positions. Perhaps this will be improved over time. Much of the am pads I either missed, or there were no cement pads in that location.
The walk from 15 to 16 was a bit much, but I don't see any way around that.

Other Thoughts:

Playing from the pro pads wore me out. I like the long holes over a shorter technical course like Valley View or LimeKiln. Playing this for the first time, I just wasn't prepared for back to back 400+ ft. holes I guess.
When you park in the lot, find the walking path and take it into the park. The first hole's pro pad will be on your right. The am pad is a few minute's walk down onto the hole itself, though I don't know why anyone would play from there....

Solid and challenging course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Set in a city park, but with nice open and wooded holes, along with a bit of elevation that makes for some fun tee shots.

Great catching baskets in good shape. Nothing to complain about here.

Concrete tee pads on all long positions, and nearly all natural tee pads for the shorts. Hole 4 is the only hole with two concrete pads.

GREAT signs at each hole. Very large, with all the information you could want. These are possibly the most visually appealing signs I've seen.

Navigation is easy, with the flow of the course being very intuitive. The only transition that could cause any issues is from 3 to 4, but follow the paved path, and you're in business. Really nice setup for tournaments.

Lots of fun lines here, along with a couple bomber holes from up on the hills. The wooded holes offer a lot of different lines, with most having a forced line that you'll need to hit to score well. Also, a really nice mix of distances keep the course feeling fresh from hole to hole.

Cons:

It would be nice if the short tee pads were concrete and had more than just rudimentary paper signs, but honestly, I don't think I've ever seen anybody playing the short tees.

Wind can be a huge factor on the more open holes, especially the shots from elevation.

It can get very wet here in the spring...there are some lower wetland areas that can flood out, making it very difficult early in the season, unless you're wearing your mukluks.

Other Thoughts:

This really is a solid course in a nice park with man other amenities. Rentable pavilions, playgrounds, baseball diamonds, etc.

There are two parking lots, one that sits near the beginning of hole 3, and the other that sits near the basket of 18. If you park here, you'll need to walk up the path to the practice basket and Hole 1 tee pad.

Overall, a really solid course, especially if you can throw 350-400'. Lots of scoring opportunity, or, if you're off that day, lots of high scoring opportunity. Definitely worth a couple spins if the opportunity presents itself.

Very nice 18 in very nice park. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 26, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice looking chainstar baskets on every hole. These were all in great shape and caught nicely. The tee pads here were probably the best I've ever seen in about 90 different courses so far. They are huge, level and grippy. They start out about 8 feet wide in the back and flare down to 4 or 5 feet wide in the front. Also every tee pad had a bench on the back part which is a nice bonus. They incorporate the river that runs through the park on holes 1 and 17 which is a cool idea here. There's a decent amount of elevation here as well. Nothing too drastic but enough to keep it interesting in spots. There's also a good amount of heavily wooded, moderately wooded and mostly open shots here. The distances also vary nicely on this course. There were two sets of tees on most holes too. The longs being concrete and the shorts being grass/dirt. There weren't signs on every hole but at least half it seemed if not more. Again, like the tee pads here the signs are the biggest and best I've seen to date. They show a nice topographical diagram of the hole layout with hole locations, tee locations, distances and pars. Very informative and easy to spot. The flow of this course was excellent. Hole 1 starts very near the parking lot and 18 ends right next to it. Every hole in between flows nicely to the next hole. Also all the holes keep a safe amount of distance away from each other. All said this is a very fun, well rounded course. It's still new too so it should only get better with time.

Cons:

It can get a bit busy it seems but with a course this nice that's to be expected. Other than that this is a really nice course with not much for cons. I could say the short tees would be better with concrete but again I'm sure that's coming eventually.

Other Thoughts:

This is definitely worth a trip here if you're in the area. Good challenge for intermediate to skilled players alike. Many things they did here I would love to see new courses do in the future. This one won't disappoint.

Pros:

Overall a relatively calm park course, nice signage and tee pads on the permanent holes (1,2,3,4,5,6,12,13,16,17, and 18). Benches on every hole that I can remember. Nice mix of wooded and open holes with some elevation change (the most notable of which I would say are on 12 and 16).

Cons:

Dirt tee pads can get muddy and the hillside on hole 2 can become squishy after rain. The walks between 3-4 and 15-16 can be a bit long. Some players unfamiliar with the course will start on hole 3 causing some confusion.

Other Thoughts:

When throwing hole 12 keep in mind the disc can skip a large amount at the bottom. Holes 5 through 13 can be cut off from wind on a calm or moderately windy day as opposed to the other holes.

Wide open spaces 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a sprawling multi-use park. There are a handful of holes in the wooded areas of the park that offer some fun technical shots. These are mostly shorter and have a good mix of left and right turning lines. There is some thick underbrush in spots to punish errant drives.

The rest of the course plays in open areas with scattered trees. There is plenty of length on these holes, offering several opportunities to open up and throw longer drives. It seems like the tees and pads are an ongoing process, the concrete pads that were in on a few holes were large and nicely textured, assuming the rest of the holes get that kind of treatment this is a big plus. The signs are in a similar state, mostly not finished, but a few great signs with hopefully more to come. There are next tee markers for several of the walks between holes, always a nice touch.

Cons:

The course plays pretty wide open overall, and can feel a bit repetitive. I'm not a fan of tall prairie grass, and it comes into play on several of the open holes here, it adds more frustration than it does legitimate disc golf challenge. There are lots of long walks between holes that break up the flow of your round.

There are dual pin placements, but the current position isn't marked on the sign so you have to walk ahead to scout out the holes despite good signage. There are some spots where walking paths and other park activities are in play, this could be a safety issue on a busy day.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find this course pretty long, though mostly it's not all that punitive for less accurate throwers. More experienced players might enjoy the chance to rip some long drives, but it doesn't really provide a great overall test of various disc golf skills.

Work in progress 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Long course, with a few challenging holes.

Cons:

Only real challenge is the distance. Most holes are just long empty fields with a basket at the end. Only a few actually have obstacles to think about. Also there is a long walk between holes 3 to 4 and 15 to 16. As for the water hazard its barely a hazard. The river is directly in front of the tee pad so it isn't much of a challenge.

Other Thoughts:

Other park users don't respect the course and continually walk out in front of golfers. This course is a work in progress so maybe in five years it might be comparable to something like Crystal Lake Park.

Update: 11/22/12. Getting Better! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 21, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lots of recent changes to this course make it very fun!! Here is what disc golfers in West Bend now have available to them:

18 holes located throughout a very nice park. The holes are sprawled out throughout the park to use lots of varieties of terrain. The course designers here did not limit themselves to holes that owuld yield the best flow, rather they made sure the disc golf here was enjoyable.

*Great variety of distance among the holes from the long tees. Bring your drivers and stretch your arm!
*Fun obstacles on about half of the holes
*Throw across the MIlwaukee River!
*Good mixture of wooded holes and open holes
*For the holes that have concrete teepads anbd signs, they look great!

Cons:

*This course is still a work in progress. Only about half of the holes have concrete teepads, so as these get installed, I expect this courses rating will climb even higher (especially if they install concrete teepads from the short positions).

*A lot of the holes were fairly open, and from the short tees, these would probably be pretty boring

*There appeared to be multiple pin placements, and on a few of the tees the signs don't indicate where the pin is currently located. Hole 4 was not where it was listed on the sign, so if you are new here watch out for things like that before you throw!

Other Thoughts:

I will visit this course whenever I am in West Bend. I gave this course a rather low rating last year, but the designers and the City of West Bend have done a great job helping it grow since then.
