Tampa's oldest course, it could be a lot more! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good sized concrete tees on all 18 tee pads. Good informative signs at all the tees also.
The Mach 5s are generally in good shape, some are showing a little age, but the next tee arrows hanging off the bottom are a good touch.
After you cross the wide expanse of #1 fairway, the holes are laid out in a nice part of this park. Large, old growth trees, to require shot shaping and many with hanging moss on them to create more obstacles.
Not a lot of thick undergrowth to hide discs, the right side of #1/10 and #2/11 was about it. Frankly, the thick stuff beside #2 probably prevents anything from going in the nearby river.
While #8/17 provide about the only true Hyzer/Annie holes, there are enough trees to force different shots on most holes.

Cons:

North 22nd St in Tampa ends at the park entrance. This is not one of the fancier parks you will find a course in, with the only other facilities a ballfield (with several Porta Johns) and a sketchy fenced in area near an old building.
The area opposite the parking area is a wide open, flat field, probably 500' by 800', and that area is used for basically one hole, the 937' #1. Its hard to believe that the designer had to layout 18 tees to 9 baskets and not able to use the majority of this area.
I don't recall any benches or trash cans around the course, so please pack out, all the way out, any trash you have.

Other Thoughts:

I see this is the oldest public course in Tampa, the neighborhood and park itself look like they have seen better days, but the upkeep on the course is in great shape. Mostly Par 3s with a couple of Par 4s thrown in, including #10, half the distance back to #1 basket.
The majority of the Back 9 tees seemed to be separated from the Front 9 tees, so if groups are playing both holes, they shouldn't be interfering with each other. They also provide a different look at the basket, but most are about the same distance as their counterpart.
As mentioned above, #2 tee is close to thick brush down the right side, with the basket around the bend to the right, be careful you don't cut this one off.
#5 and 14 is the Par 4, playing 472'/460 it provides a good look at birdie.
#7 is probably the toughest Par 3 on the course, 428' with as much downhill that exists on this flat layout, under a low ceiling to a guarded green.
#1 serves as an access hole to the rest of the course. I don't think I've seen a 900' hole used this way before, however with the thick brush down the last 150' on the right, and the excellent pin position below large trees, it finishes very well.
Getting back to the big green elephant of this course, if the large area at the front of the park would be used, they would probably be nothing more than wide open bomber holes. But, it would be interesting to see what they could do mixing holes in this area, with the well designed holes in the wooded area. I haven't played too many 18 tees to 9 baskets courses (until this trip to FL), so I'm not sure how well it works on a crowded course. Does one card play the hole out, do both cards tee, then one plays the hole out? It would be interesting to see.
I did see an off leash dog owner in the area while I was playing, so it does get used by others. I looked at #1 as a warm up hole and was glad I didn't have the long walk back from 9/18 under a hot FL sun.
This is a well laid out course and the creativity to get 18 unique holes in the area provided is a job well done.

Fun And Challenging 9 Hole Course That Plays As 18 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First hole is a unique par 5 at almost 1000 feet. Nice to have a course with a legitimate par 5 on it. First basket plays into the beginning of a beautiful canopy of large oak trees for the majority of the 18 nice concrete tee pads. I will say that this is absolutely the best 9 hole course I have ever played.

Cons:

Seems possible to have made this a 18 hole course utilizing more of the side near the river that runs along it and the very large field and woods. Longish walk back to parking after the round but perhaps the designer was not allowed to use all of that extra space.

A bit long, but fun with nice shade trees 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Easy to get to off I-275 or Hwy 41
-Short walk from parking to hole #1
-Hole #1 is great for practicing your longest discs/drives
-After #1, you are surrounded by beautiful large trees with nice shade
-Clean course
-Lots of good places for lunch around the nearby campus (USF)

Cons:

-Parking entrance and lot are not paved
-Hole #1 (976 feet) on windy day plays REALLY LONG!
-Some ant mounds, watch out for them

Other Thoughts:

It was windy the day I played, and hole #1 (wind blowing against my throws) felt like it went on forever. I did like getting in the practice, though, of trying to improve my driving distance. As an average player, this course felt a bit long for me. However, I did enjoy playing here and will do so again. Maybe it will improve my distance.

Great Hidden Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 25, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very clean and well maintained
Nice Signs
Beautiful Trees and scenery
tee boxes are concrete now

Cons:

Obvious one is 9 baskets for 18 tee boxes. but honestly not a huge con if course is not busy.
Just personally hole one is a monster hole lol

Other Thoughts:

Great hidden course that has been well maintained in middle of tampa. Location is great for us tampa residents that do not want to rive all the way to Pinellas county for a round. Curious to see how it will pay during the rainy months. Will definitely continue to play it since discovering it.

Scenic And Solid Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 17, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

I normally get a little aggravated when I see a 9 hole course with alternate tees passing itself off as an 18 holer , but this course is one of the exceptions . The places you have to park here aren't the greatest , but as you look over the landscape for the disc golf course , it gets better .The course was mowed okay and it was clean when I played . Bathrooms are near the ball fields . There is a nice kiosk near hole #1's tee pad . Take a picture of it or download the map . The large cement tee pads grip well . The signage is good , with hole # par distance and flight path . The blue Mach 5 baskets catch okay and are nice to look at ( harder for me to see at dusk ) . The course flows okay . After the long hole #1 and/or 10 , you make a hard left and play down the right side of the course until #6/ #15 which throws upward , then you go down the opposite side of the course for the last 3 holes . Instead of putting a smaller more open 18 hole course here , they put a dual tee 9 hole course with a lot more length . At 7132' for all 18 , this has to be one of the longest of the Tamps area . #1 is one of the longest holes in the Tampa area at 976' . The tee kind of points you in the direction of a large group of bushes and rough , with a little doorway in it . Aim slightly to the left of this area . The area is flat , but it will slope slightly downhill to the basket behind all of this . There is nothing here that is short ( #6 and #15 go in at 260' and 262' but are slightly uphill with obstacles like a gully on the left and brush in the fairway ) , with par 3's like 7 ( 428' ) and 18 ( 430' ) on the longer side . After teeing off at #1 , you drift away from other park activities , so you have to share the course with anyone other than some disc golfers . Popular ? I don't know , but on a Thursday evening there were some players out on the course when I was there . It's a good fit for most players . Disc Risk : minimal , since the course part of this park is so well clean and cared for . With no water hazards , as long as you watch your disc land , ( only a couple of spots where the basket might be blind ) and don't throw it up in a tree , your discs will return home with you . Once you start your disc round here , you will find that this course has a nice feel to it and is nice looking , with its large canopied trees , and 9 well placed blue baskets . Several good holes worth mentioning . #2/11 both give you different looks , but the basket is tucked in to the right of the course with sets brush on the right . #5/14 sends you from canopied tree to a cove of them with low hanging branches with Spanish moss on them . #6 & 15 are shorted uphills to a basket guarded by trees with a gully on the left . #18 is a great finishing hole , straightaway and flat , it has trees in the fairway and is 430' to a basket tucked in just behind a huge oak with a low hanging branch . This took me about an hour to play , and I was going at a good clip . It is going to take 2 1/2 + hours for a foursome . Signature Hole : #8/17 . These attack the basket from different angles to the right and the left , and the basket sits tightly against giant shrubs . Attacking it from 17's tee is a little more challenging because the giant shrubs create a tunnel to throw through from the left .

Cons:

#1 Safety . Not from discs but the general area . The course isn't in the best neighborhood of Tampa , so make sure you lock up your electronics or valuables in the trunk BEFORE you get to the park . I was told break-ins occur here . Also , park as far away from the ball fields as you can . Even if teams aren't playing when you get there , they might when you leave . A softball through your windshield will ruin your day . #2 Crowds . This didn't affect my play , but since the course shares baskets , many people playing will jam this course up big time . #3 Distance . Not the course , but the walk from #9/#18's basket back to the parking lot is a few hundred yards . I finished my round in the dark , and walking out of the canopy and to your car could be eerie for some in pitch black and just suck for everyone else in the daylight . This course plays fairly flat , but the design made some good use of some of the slopes here , especially on the left side of the course . Not much in the way of amenities , no benches , or places to chill after or during your round , so nothing keeping you here after playing . No trash cans , so carry out what you carry in .

Other Thoughts:

This course deserves some respect . Nothing here will stick in your memory bank forever , but it IS a well constructed course and gives you a scenic walk through the back of the park . I was brought up to date that this course has steadily improved over the last several years . If you like gearing up your arm for some lengthy throws and mixing it up with a few technical aspects in a typical park style course then this might be a place of interest for you . Thanks , Taylor Park Disc Golf Club and Tampa Rec Dept for letting me play here . My Recommendation : Even though long for newbies , little disc risk , good for the locals here . long enough for pros or ams , and a good leg stretching play for travelers , right off of I-75 . Play The Course !!

Majestic Live Oaks 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 9, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

(3.018 Rating) (REVISED - replayed October 2017) One of Tampa Bay's longest courses, a par 59 coming in at 7,137 feet.
- HOLE LENGTH - 22nd Street Park is one of the few area courses that has some good length to it, and even allows the big throwers to really air them out. The par 3's here average over 350 feet and several of them are over 390 feet. Hole (1) to start, is nearly a 1,000 feet long, and is the second longest hole in the Tampa Bay area (24 courses).
- UNIQUENESS - Although a flat course and void of water hazards, the overall uniqueness is a touch above your average 18 hole course. There are a bunch of 4's and a par 5 and hole lengths vary from 260 feet to 976 feet. A few holes have some significant bend to them. Holes (6,15) plays along a dry creek bed. In addition, there is an overgrown mound on (8/17) that will test your combined drive shaping accuracy and length. In addition to water an elevation omissions, other missing items include a very well defined tunnel play, a true dogleg, and an overhead play.
- SIGNAGE - A wonderful course map is located on the walk to tee (1). Good hole signage is at all the tee pads as well.
- TEE PADS - Concrete tees were finally installed in either 2015 or 16. They are of good length and width.
- SPACING - Above average, perhaps there are but just a couple times that a disc can fade into another fairway.
- NAVIGATION - I don't find any major issues. Take a picture of the map at hole (1). If you take a picture, you'll have no issues on your first time threw.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - Although long, I still find the course acceptable to all skill levels (beginners thru pros). There are no water hazards and the fairways are more than reasonable spaced. I took my mom here once and she had a blast even though she couldn't throw beyond a 100 feet.
- RAW BEAUTY - Some of the most stoic large oaks and pine trees in all of Tampa Bay are located here. Some are as wide as a small car. They will definitely factor into your thought process on how to approach a hole.

Cons:

Just a few issues with 22nd St. Park.
- LOCATION - Although easy to get to from I275. The park is located in an economically challenged area. Break-ins have happened at the parking area. Be sure to lock your car and keep valuables free from view.
- ELEVATION - Very little elevation change. Probably varies by no more than 15 feet on the entire course and no hole varies by more than 10 feet. Surprisingly this is probably above average for the area. I will add however, that holes (8/17) plays around a large dirt mound packed with weeds and small bushes. You will hate your life if you find yourself in it.
- GRASS LENGTH - Disc golfers beware, Hole (1) is notorious for losing track of your disc. The hole is wide, wide, wide open and players generally try to rip their arm socket out on the drive. In addition, the grass seems to always be higher here, than the rest of the course. Watch very carefully to where your disc lands and keep track of the line you'll need to walk. I have spent hours searching for my discs and my friends discs on this hole.
- 9 BASKETS - Although listed as 18 holes on DGCR, there are only 9 baskets in play. Two tees go to each basket. Most of the back 9 tees are at different angles, and the distances vary both shorter and longer. The back 9 plays about one to two throws easier than the front.
- CHARACTER - Slightly below average. Other than tee pads and hole signage as mentioned in the pro comments, there really isn't anything else. No shelter, no benches, no tables, no multiple pin placements or tees, etc. There is good tree shading however with hole (1) being the only exception.
- 18 AND PARKING - Hole (18) finishes about a 1000 feet from the parking.
- TIME PLAY - The course is not a quick play, a group of 4 should plan to be here nearly 2 1/2 to 3 hours to complete 18 holes.

Other Thoughts:

A very underrated course in my opinion. The course takes a big hit due to the area it's in, but I've yet to have any issue at the 10 times or so that I've played here. In addition, a lot of the older reviews knock it for natural tees and navigation, and rightfully so. However, both of those issues have been fixed now. If you live in the Tampa Bay metro, be sure to play this course at least once. Definitely worth a look see if you are from out of town and you like the longer courses.

A hidden jewel of a course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course might be the most underrated course I have ever played. The landscape is stunning with some of the most beautiful oak trees I have ever seen. There are 18 very nice brand-new concrete tee pads. Granted there are only nine baskets here but each basket has two different concrete pads that are very well thought out. The design flow of the course is so easy to follow. You can throw hard here and not worry about losing a disc. Strong-arms definitely benefit as most holes are well over 300 and 400 feet. Number one is over 900 feet and number ten is 500 feet. I love how the course takes you through some very creative obstacles. You're forced to stay low on many of your shots because of the thick Live Oak canopy. There are plenty of birdie opportunities for the average disc golfer. I would think this course would offer a great challenge to all skill levels.

All the makings 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

a variety of shots are needed here while not asking you to play like a 10 time world disc champion either, by having the course be stupid hard (see Medard holes 11-14). A majority of the course is also shaded, but not jungle, impossible wooded either, like so many disc golf courses seem to be. While not offering the bite of other courses, it still can leave some sting. Recent new concrete tee boxes and tee signs are fantastic and the course while utilizing 9 baskets has a 18 hole feel with added length. This is a hidden gem and a good summer course as it plays mostly in the shade. Nothing like a 900 foot par 5 to start out. I am real impressed with the new changes

Cons:

This course is not in the greatest area and I wouldn't play here close to twilight or dusk, and from the end of 18 or nine is a bit of walk.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 8 around the dirt mound and a batch of trees in the middle with basket slightly elevated and a slope overhang, is well done. If you haven't played here you should, great course, never too crowded!!!

Great course, nice changes! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful scenic fairways, landscaped with ancient oaks. This course has some great anhyser and hyzer shots to be played. 90% of the holes are challenging and tough to birdie. One 800 ft par 4 and 450 par 3, can test your distance. With some recent changes to the basket locations on 6 and 15, this course is even easier to navigate. Grass maintenance has been fine. New signs have been installed and some are being corrected!

Cons:

The lack of pads is the only bad thing about this course. However, we received confirmation that City will be funding concrete pads in the next few months.

Other Thoughts:

This course needs to be appreciated much more. The negative reviews really don't showcase what it's worth. Do it, try it out. It will definitely test your game. Thanks for the design Patrick!

It's great that the City of Tampa agreed to another disc golf course in the area, however with so many other great courses within 30 minutes of here it left me never wanting to play this course.

I'm told that the park is becoming something bigger other than disc golf, which could be good if they invest in some nice pads and tee signs. But also could be problematic for foot traffic as the park isn't tremendously big.

Course Improvements Making This Course Much Better! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 26, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Set in a scenic park with large oak and pine trees, giving multiple ways to throw most of the holes. Nice grassy fairways make losing a disc very unlikely. The park has a nice quiet, peaceful vibe to it. A nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Tampa urban area. The course is fairly long, with a couple of bombers. Big guns might like the longer holes here.

Cons:

Um, having nine baskets with 18 tees is not an 18 hole course, in my opinion, its a nine-hole course with 18 tees. There is also a long walk back to the car from hole 9/18 There is a river in the park, but it isn't really used for the dg course. No restrooms, but the course isn't too far from civilization, and there are plenty of trees.

Other Thoughts:

This course is coming along nicely. The greater Tampa area has been upping their game lately, and it shows. The Tampa area is quickly becoming a DG destination with several great courses now.

Varied for Nine 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This one surprised me in a good way. It's not a destination course, but as a beginner- or intermediate-level course, it offers a decent variety with some nice length, some pretty surroundings and even some length.

The first hole offers some length and its a good one. At seven-hundred feet, most will need a second drive even after airing it out off of the tee. There's even a little downhill at the end, leading to a tricky little approach shot with trees coming into play near the green.

The next few holes play along the river. The water lurks here, only threatening truly errant shots, but forehanders and lefties (though not forehanding lefties) will have to at least consider it before throwing. These range in the 300s distance wise, and there are enough trees to force players to aim carefully, but straight shots should suffice. The final hole of this group(5) is the longest at 435 feet and it plays towards the river instead of along it.

The last bunch of holes are shorter featuring distances between 200 and 300 feet and tend to force you to use a strong turn or skip to get near the pin. It's one case where the the alternate tees are actually different, as the second set plays right-to-left whereas the originals play the opposite. They are actually very nice lines to throw, especially the RHFH lines.

It's a nice collection of holes that I enjoyed. The kind that I would like to be near home, but not the kind that I would seek out or consider an integral part of a road trip.

Cons:

It's definitely a misnomer to call this an eighteen hole course. There are nine holes with two pads each. Most of the alternate pads are just a dozen feet to the right or left of the original pad, and don't provide anything resembling a different look at the basket.

This could be a three-star course or more if the second set of tees was moved to somewhere not so close to the first nine. This wouldn't be too hard, as the tees are natural(not something I mind) so the sign posts would just need to be dug up and placed somewhere they could approach baskets from a different angle.

It's also clearly not a course that will challenge the veteran player, nor one that I would seek out or travel to. There are no spectacular holes here. Nothing to remember. There's nothing wrong with a solid course that can be played quickly and in likely solitude, as long as that's what is expected. That's what you should expect here.

Other Thoughts:

That said, it was easy to follow and had nice variation, some length and some tricky shots. Really a solid course that plays to a certain ability level, knows what it is and executes the vision.

Natural Florida at some of it's best! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 25, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Ok, I would give this course an actual rating of 2.75 but since it's not an option and I think if I were to go 2.5 it would be to low. This is natural Florida at some of it's best. The live oaks are beautiful and some of the holes run next to the Hillsborough River.

I think they did a great job in using the trees to defend the holes. I wouldn't classify the lanes as open nor would I say there narrow, there pretty nice in my opinion. The oaks provide most of the obstacles, #8 is really the only one hole with brush around it.

The course is only 9 pins and they use multiple tees to turn this into and 18 hole course.

Cons:

There are several tee signs missing. The natural pads are well worn out, I couldn't find #17's pad. A couple of signs are inaccurate. The flow isn't the worst but it could've been better.

No restrooms, water fountains or concessions.

Other Thoughts:

It's an enjoyable course with great natural beauty. I will come to play here upon my next visit in Temple Terrace. There's also a course near USF I would recommend as well.

Best that could be done. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 19, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- 1st hole is a nice, long downhill shot; something that is unique to the area.
- Good balance of left and right turning holes.
- Some unique lines with low ceilings; each hole has multiple routes to the pin.
- Tee-signs are nice graphically, not very accurate though.

- Great scenery and wildlife.

Cons:

- VERY unorganized, it is very easy to get lost in this course, the flow is not steady and the signs under the basket sometime only point to the next hole for the front nine tee pads.
- Nasty natural tee-pads that have been worn in way past their prime.
- One of the tee-pads utilizes the same basket/tee-pad combo for two separate holes, I guess for the front nine you go to the right and the back nine to the left.

Other Thoughts:

- This course was built on a piece of land that was once completely wooded and abandoned. I played this course for the first time about a week or so after it had opened and there were still very large piles of trees, brush and other junk throughout the course. So to say that this course has come a long was is an understatement.

- Not a course i recommend taking a day trip to play unless you plan on playing other courses in the area.

I liked it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 8, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course was relatively easy to navigate thanks to:
- the course map before the first hole
- mini-maps on most of the tees
- arrows on the baskets pointing to the next tee.

Nice scenery

Par for most holes shown on the sign at the tee.

Cons:

The tees are sometimes far from the basket on the previous hole.

A lot of the tee signs were missing

Other Thoughts:

Print the map that is posted in the "Links/Files" section of this website. It will come in handy.

Live Oaks on the River 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 27, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Setting - live oaks, riverside, quiet and removed from the neighborhood

Cons:

Tee areas

Other Thoughts:

22nd St. Park disc golf course is a nine-basket/18-tee flat Florida course set mostly in an impressive stand of live oaks and tucked into the back corner of an otherwise small municipal park. While the park itself and the surrounding neighborhood are not quite the shiny sunny tourist ideal, most of the course is a good taste of real Florida: sprawling live oaks, sandy, flat, and playing along a nearly still, black-tea-colored river.

This course is atypical of many in the area in that it does not measure up with the little details. The teepads are natural, set in sand, and thus wearing down quickly. Getting a good X-step can be a challenge. The signage is decent, but missing in a couple spots. Directional arrows for the next tee do help a lot, however. A couple scrub piles mar an otherwise nice landscape. No permanent bathrooms or water are present.

This course measures up better from a playability perspective. After an out of character super long, wide open hole #1, the rest of the course plays among the oaks. While no hole is particularly distinctive, the course does take advantage of the landscape. It's not particularly tight, and thick underbrush is not an issue at all, but it's not all wide-open chucks either. The course does get technical in spots, and thus, coupled with the low punishment factor, could be a good place to learn the game. Each hole has one basket, but two tees; the second nine come at each basket from a different angle. While the river is partially in view along one side, it's not really in play, so the only danger out here is whacking a big tree.

Overall, I rate this course as Decent, and worth checking out if you're in the area. The landscape of live oak hammocks alongside the river is the big plus, and the course has a decent playability factor. It features a couple birdie runs, a couple long holes, and players will need both control and distance to excel. These positives are offset by poor tee areas (which is atypical for this area), a lack of any really distinctive holes or design elements, and the fact that it's only nine baskets.

Favorite hole - #2 - Picturesque shot down an alley of large, sprawlinig live oak trees.

Lots of potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice course map and sign near the parking lot. Definitely take a picture of it. You will need it.

Beautiful park under old oak trees and along a small creek/river/canal(?). Very quiet, I saw no other DG's, and only a couple of walkers. I bet Glow golf would be amazing here!

Baskets looked brand new, at least recently painted.

Challenging Distance on most holes, but only 4 or 5 holes over 400 feet. Also only 4 or 5 shorter "ace run" holes.

Cons:

Not the best neighborhood, probably want to rethink the glow golf :/

Only nine baskets, 18 holes achieved by playing from different tee pads. Would be a problem if they were to host a tournament.

Tee Pads not in good shape - In my opinion this is the worst thing about the course. Most tee pads were very sandy and had holes and/or roots. I had to play 'around' the tee pads to find firm areas. On some holes this brought obstacles such as overhanging branches more into play than they otherwise would be.

Navigation not easy without the course map. I followed a previous posters' advice and snapped a cell phone pic. It was invaluable.

1st hole is really long and doesn't seem to fit. Hole placement is good, but the tee should be move over to the road on the right and about 150 ft up. It would bring some OB into play and still be a tough par 4 for most people.

Other Thoughts:

This course cold be awesome with a little more work. The park has plenty of space for a full 18 hole layout, and I would love to see a few more 'tunnel' holes with the oak trees. Also the previously mentioned change to hole 1 would be an improvement.

Overall a very enjoyable round of golf! I would play it regularly if I lived in the area.
