West Branch SP has two courses on site. I played The Grassman a while back, and thought I'd try the Campground Course while I am in the area.

"The Campground Course" is a heavily wooded course that appeals more towards the average campers. However, I think an experienced player can still enjoy a round or two here.

A few holes have a great view of the lake. #5 is the only hole where it comes into play.

Good variety in distances and hole shapes. It has pretty good replay value for a 9-holes because of its variety.

Nice tee signs are posted on every hole, with par, distance, and a hole map.

Navigation is about as easy as it gets. Bright red arrows are on every hole, and point to where the next tee is. If that's not enough, there's tape on the bottom of every basket.

Most baskets are old versions of the DISCatcher. Even though they are older, they still catch pretty well.

Parking lot is huge, so parking will never be an issue.

There's a small practice area right next to the lot, if you need to work on your putting game.

Natural tees are pretty rough. They're uneven in some spots making footing a pretty big issue.

It's dumbed down a little bit for the average camper. There's probably a little more potential in the area, but the design was restricted to give campers a better experience.

There's a hiking trail that winds through most of the course, so watch out for pedestrians wondering the fairways.

No trash cans or benches along the way.



The Campground Course is a good 10-15 minute drive from The Grassman, even though they are in the same park.

Overall, I thought that this was a fun little 9-holes. If you play one of the other courses in the area, I'd check this one out as well. Good to warmup or wind down!

The West Branch Camp Course was a very reasonable 9 hole course, carved through the woods of this beautiful state park.

Bordering the campground, you are throwing almost every shot through the woods, with the bookend holes being the most open. Those shots were often tight, and technical, allowing you to shape your lines, even if they were tight.

The tee signs were descriptive, with map, distance and par. They were posted on large wooden posts, and with these you could easily tell where the next tee was.

There were a lot of nice, seemingly new next tee signs that directed you to the next tee. I really think someone is putting care in to the course, as the fairways were cleared and the grass was mowed.

There isn't much you can do with a camp course. You can't make it overly hard, because then it doesn't appeal to the general campers. This course would do a great job of introducing new players to the game, or giving campers a fun activity at the site.

The tee pads were worn spots in the ground set before a wooden post. They were uneven, and provided no room for run up. I teed from behind, and I think everyone should until these are leveled off, if ever.

A couple holes had nice, newer discatchers, and then the rest had single chain "discatchers". I think they were the oldest ever, or just homemade with a discatcher band, but they were weird. They caught fine, but it was kind of funny.

The rough off the fairways was often very thick, with thorns, and other scratchy vegetation. Losing your disc is possible if you get off the fairway on a couple holes, but with the shorter length, it isn't that much of a problem.

I think this is a great course for what it is. A par three, short wooded course on a campground. If you are in the area, and have time for nine, then you should play here, but don't come out of your way.
Kudos to the designer and the people who put in work to keep this running, because it was a nice addition to the 9 hole, introduction disc golf scene!

Sweet little 9 hole midrange/putter friendly course just outside of the campground entrance. Good use of the wooded area, and is settled alongside some park trails. Best aspect of this course is it's appeal to a mid level seasoned player as well as beginner friendly. A great layout for casual campers and park goers, this course would keep me happy during a camping trip to the park. A full 18 course would be great, but this is solid. Decent elevation, and most holes require tight tee shots if you want a birdie opportunity.

The disc golf course is on the north side of the lake in the very large West Branch State Park that has plenty of outdoor activities to take part in. Conveniently, there are numerous signs leading you to the course. A practice basket sits near hole 1's tee and the course begins and ends right by the parking lot. It makes for a pretty quick - and very scenic - 9 holes.

The bookend holes give you two open shots, with the rest of the course playing in the thick woods. The holes are well designed, being nicely carved in the woods. They offer fair shots but have little room for error with the tight fairways. If you get off track, getting back onto the fairway isn't treacherous. There are multiple paths to the basket on many occassions. Though the elevation is not extreme here, most holes have some form of elevation change. There are even three par 4's, though I feel they are a bit inflated.

The tee signs give you a good picture of the hole and the yellow bands on the baskets are helpful in spotting the baskets in the woods.

Hole 5 is a fun one and was the highlight of the round for me. It plays from left to right with the basket right on the water's edge. At 200 feet, it tempts you to make an ace run but any bit too far will get your disc wet. This gives a nice risk/reward aspect to the course.

The biggest con for me was the navigation. The holes run pretty close together - which is nice in a sense - but makes for a confusing layout. I had trouble navigating from basket to the next tee, with many hiking paths traveling in different directions. Sometimes, the intuitive path wasn't the right one and I went to the wrong hole a few times. With multiple tee signs and baskets in view, it is easy to skip a few holes. Luckily, the walks aren't very long.

With hole lengths topping out at 335 feet, this course doesn't give you much opportunity to air out your drivers.

The natural tees were a problem, often muddy and uneven and sometimes not being real clear where to through from.

The course seems to stay muddy easily, being damp throughout even though it hadn't rained in the area recently.

The holes themselves are fun to play, not offering a huge challenge but giving options through the tree lines and allowing for some different shots. However, navigational issues and the natural tees hurt the course's rating. The online map doesn't look super helpful, but I recommend printing it out beforehand.

No fault of anyone's but it was frustrating to have to make a 15 minute drive to the Grassman, which is located right across the lake. It'd be great if there was a way of crossing the lake instead of having to drive completely around to the other park entrance. No fault of the designers, just something to keep in mind when traveling to play here.

-Well shaded for summer days with high temperatures.
-Easy to get two rather quick rounds in.
-Much potential for either alternate tee boxes, and/or a back nine.

-Course plays through a series of walking/hiking trails. I had to wait 2 or 3 times for people walking through from the nearby campground. At least, given that you can see down each fairway rather well, its easy to see if anyone is coming. This is probably only a real issue if the campground is crowded.
-The natural tee pads could get quite muddy if there has been rain recently. There hadn't been significant precipitation in the roughly 2 weeks prior to playing, yet 2 or 3 tee pads were still moist.
-The backtracking to get to the next tee on a few holes, particularly between 2 and 3 and 5 and 6.

Other reviews have good hole-by-hole descriptions, so just a few thoughts: on hole 6 it seems that recently a large, old tree has fallen just to the left of the pin with much of the root system now exposed, up to 6 or 7 feet above ground. I would recommend leaving this tree and the roots where they are, undisturbed, simply because it adds what amounts to an inverted bunker to the hole. If you leave your drive to the left you'll have to shoot around or over the tree/roots. This definitely added a unique challenge to this hole and the course overall. Hole 8 was also quite memorable with its elevation change.
Perhaps painting part of the tee signs red (instead of leaving them brown, which blends in with the abundant trees) might help with navigating the course.
I will be interested to see what else is done to this course, either with adding a back nine or alternate tee pads. It seems like there is significant room for expansion to the west of the present course.
For what it is: a heavily wooded, tight but short course with challenging pin positions and elevation change, its a good course.

Scenic. It's just nice being in the woods, you know? Saw a few deer first time out.

Good chance to drive putts or work on your mid range discs. Leave the drivers at home.

It's just a fun course to go play a quick round, I live 15 minutes away so probably wouldn't go if it was much further.

Holes 2 and 9 I believe are marked par 4's and should be 3's IMO

Fairly flat, fairly short.

Other than the majority of #1 (beginning) and #9 (ending), this course plays entirely within the dense woods (i.e. thick canopy, so little undergrowth) in a small part of a large public park. Most fairways are tight - one-to-three person-wide walking paths, often needing a sharp turn (lefts more common than rights) late.

The online map aids in navigation, but I still missed tee-4, finding tee-5 instead, then backtracking. From basket-2, backtrack and look right to find tee-3.

Favourite hole: #8. One of the longer holes at 320', it is the only hole that requires an S-shape, and initially loses, then gains, elevation.

If you're in the mood for a quick, short, tight round, pay a visit.

Beautiful newer course with loads of potential. Heavily wooded but has nice fair lines that give everyone a chance to advance towards the hole Course winds through a dense forest just north of the main lake. When driving there turn into the main drive past the West Branch park sign and continue on road towards main office. Course will be on the left. Parking is just past the practice basket. The designer definitely put some thought into the layout. Course winds around the forest area just north of parking area. Definitely helps if you can throw a nice straight shot 200-250 feet. Fairways are cleared of trees and give you lines to follow. Course can be tricky to find your way around due to the dense forest it is sometimes a little hard to find next tees. I'm uploading a crude map to help fellow golfers get around. Two really nice signature holes to finish round. #8 is just a beautiful S-curve that drops down and then back up a hill . # 9 is a straight shot to basket into a field that allows you to throw away. The tricky part though is a grouping of low hanging branches that you must stay under before you make field. Makes for a fun, challenging shot. Site lists three holes as par 4's but course sets up to play all holes as par 3's.

Overall it is nice to see another nice course built in an Ohio State Park and has lots of potential to grow going forward.

This course has some real potential. There is a ton of land here and there is room and some topographical features that could allow this course to really develop some signature holes. The individuals working on this case have done a lot of work to clear the first lanes. If they are going to invest that work into developing the longer white tee lines and another 9 holes, I will be very excited to return repeatedly.

At this point the course only plays from the red tees. This makes the holes relatively short overall and fairly easy. Adding white lines will really help. Some more permanent tee pads will help here also. Some of the holes get repetitive as the woods all have a similar look, but this will change as the course gets worn in more.

This is an excellent start, I can't wait to come back to see improvements as they come in. Here is a hole to hole review as it stands today.

1 - Medium length line into a pin protected by trees. There are two lanes cut into the basket that provide alternative routes to the basket.

You have to take a right from the number 1 pin together to basket 2. It can be a bit confusing.

2 - This is a longer tunnel short with a lazy right turning shape. The pin is tucked in sharp left at the end.

3 - This is a fun short straight ace race hole

4 - This is a neat, tight l shape. The disc flies straight for most of the hole, then should cut in hard left at the very end

Find the tee for 5 off to the right

5 - This is a fun short right turn with some water hazard potential. Probably one of the most scenic holes.

The number 6 tee requires you to walk back up the number 5 fairway.

6 - This is a short uphill with a small left turn to the pin at the end

Go back to the left to find 7

7 - This is a shorter tunnel shot with a big fallout into a gully on the right. Nice way to make a more risky green!

8 - This is a nice narrow s-bend right the. Left tunnel. This is one of the most imaginative holes in the course design.

9 - This is a longer open field throw. A good chance to finally rip an open driver.
