Good beginner course, or a warm up round.

Pros:
Nice beginner, family level course in a small, nice park in Saint George. There is a playground, restrooms, pavilion and a walking path, the course is laid out basically inside the walking path.
The DISCatchers are in decent shape, not brand new, but do a good job of catching.
The course does not have tee pads, but nearly(?) all are on the walking path.
A decent amount of variety on this flat, play around the center open field in the park. This is because trees are planted around the field, just inside the walking path. This is where most of the baskets are located, weaving through the trees, next to the walking path.
Plenty of parking in the lot and the restroom is nice, and was open for my pre-dawn start.

Cons:
No actual tee pads or signs. There is a sign for the course at the first tee, but that is it. I did spot a few white lines painted on the walking path for the tees, but you need to use Udisc to determine where most of the tee are.
Since you are throwing from and near the walking path, there could be delays if it is busy. There is 1 soccer goal in the middle of the open field, but without any dead grass, I doubt it gets much serious use.

Other Thoughts:
Mathis is a pretty typical beginner Niner. No real elevation change (minor on 1 and 2), no serious doglegs, no tunnel shots and no guarded baskets.
#2 is the longest on the course, 298' and uphill, then everything else is 147'-262'. But these are not gimmie Ace Runs, the trees do create obstacles to shape shots around and just about every hole has a low ceiling, if you go right at the basket.
#1 does require you to throw right or left to the basket, and #3 basket is behind a row of trees down the right side of the fairway, requiring a left to right shot.
#9 offers a pretty open drive across the end of the field, but the basket has a couple of trees nearby, creating the low ceiling there.
Mathis won't be much of challenge for intermediates or above, but it wasn't built for that. Without any actual marked tees, you can even let the newbies tee from wherever they want and level the challenge. Or, play it as your warm up round for the other courses in the area.

Mathis Park DGC-Maturing trees increased difficulty since photos. 2+ years drive by

Pros:
Challenges/Pros:
• Tightly positioned bushy trees increase difficulty on many holes.
• A relatively short course but quite technical with short to intermediate length tunnel shots at many holes.
• Mandatories also add difficulty.
• Good mixture of holes favoring forehand and others backhand plus I found rollers to be useful at some holes.
• Ample opportunities for birdies with accurate shots.
• There are only 9 pins but some players who are there often have developed 18 different tee boxes locations to add interest.

• Unfortunately, vandals have removed some signs and a number of "mando" arrows, particularly those previously on trees, that really makes understanding the course more difficult. The city should address this problem as the course is very popular and draws quite a few tourists.

• Course is organized in a somewhat serpentine manner for first 3 holes (curves left for #1 and #2, then plays back toward pavilion for #3. The rest plays counter-clockwise around the larger oval park component paralleling the walking path, starting with #4 beyond the playground.
Summary of Rating/Play:
• Very appropriate for Masters 50-60+, beginning to intermediate adults or younger players particularly if one wants to work on curving drives, tight fairway drives, approach shots, and putting.
• Also good for anyone who enjoys more technical courses.

Pros:
Short holes may be good for new players, families, or anybody who just doesn't throw that far.
Nice, simple signage calls out tees, and directions to next tee for a few holes.
Good use of what was available to provide a wide variety of shots. A few holes are a straightforward line drive, but most require a little thought, and offer multiple options.

Cons:
An abnormally wet winter has led to several of the grass tee areas getting chewed up and pretty slippery.
Hole length (150-170') won't provide much score separation for intermediate-advanced players.
Short, straightforward holes don't provide a lot of challenge for intermediate-advanced players.
Very near to 0 elevation change over the whole course - flat, flat, flat.

Other Thoughts:
Sunday afternoon in February seems like a pretty good time to play - we saw a total of 4 people while we were there, and 2 of those were playing as well.
I could definitely see it getting crowded though - it's not a large park, and with the large pavilion, playground, and playing field, I could definitely see it being difficult to play as desired.
Many of the trees on the course are still fairly young - give it 5 years, and most of the holes will be a bit more challenging.
I'll definitely be back when I visit St. George in the future. It's not a destination course, but worth playing if you're in the area, especially if you're bringing the less-dedicated family along.

Other Thoughts:
I was surprised to notice that my mid-range drive was so lacking. If you're used to bomb t-offs you'll have to adjust so you don't over throw every hole.
I've seem many LARGE groups playing this course. These groups have been large families or youth groups. They aren't aware of Disc Golf etiquette.

Pros:
Quality baskets, well groomed grass park. Good use of what there is to work with. The course forces you to use different throws. Everyone was very friendly.
Cons:
The course is pretty small but still fun. We played in the evening on a Monday night and the park was fairly busy. Had to skip holes for dog walkers and kids on razors. The course lacks flow - after the 9th hole you have to walk across a couple of holes to get back to 1. If you have a horrible throw you could end up in the adjacent dirt field with a long walk to get through a gate, but at least there is a gate (the chain link fence has sharp tops).

Pros:
I've played this course about a dozen times since it's currently the best course in St. George. It is always green and very clean, tucked away in a quiet area with the Virgin River running along side it.
The 9 baskets are located around the outside of the park in pretty good locations that allow you to make the course your own. If the open field isn't in use for soccer or something then it allows for some long throws.
Trees can be used to make tight shots and tunnels.
Very low risk of losing a disc to the river or into someone's yard.
Baskets are all in great condition.

It is a fairly small and well-used park. There is a pavilion and playground you throw by that can be problematic. There are a lot of people and activities that go on so it can get a little crowded, but I've only every had to pass on a couple holes.
There aren't any concrete pads or signs. On the plus side you can choose your own adventure!

Other Thoughts:
My brother is working with the city on an official design and tee pads but that will take at least a few months, (it is the government after all). It is a nice little park that is certainly worth throwing if you're in the area.
