Take on the Lake 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The North course at Lake McMurtry plays long if you use the back tees, and has nice design. The fairways can be wooded, but are also frequently more open, cut out of tall grass. The wooded holes require accuracy to get through the trees, but are not as punishing as some other courses in the region (Bois D'arc). Open holes are a bit longer, and will seldom offer a straight shot to the basket. Keeping your disc out of the tall grass is made tougher by some big doglegs and some mature trees on the way to the pin.

18 holes, with dual tees that are concrete. The baskets are Mach III's, all in good condition. There is another full 18 on the South side of the park entrance, but l did not have time to play both.

No water came into play, and there is not much change in elevation at all. The course was very nicely kept with no litter.

Cons:

No benches or trash cans. 17 and 18 were very long, without much else of interest.

Pay to play, park entry costs $6 per car. Not a bad price for all day access to both courses.

Other Thoughts:

If the the South course is as good as the North, I would absolutely recommend a visit to Lake McMurtry for any disc golfer. The cost isn't too bad, and the park is really nice.

There aren't any dazzling signature holes on the North side, but they mix shapes and distances well for most of the layout. The woods also add nice contrast to the links feeling on the more open areas.

It was hot and dry, and I played pretty lousy, but I'm glad I got to play at least one course there. I would like to return for the complete package some time.

Pros:

This course is a very good combination of distance shots and technical shots. My personal favorite of the two McMurtury courses, is similar in layout but has a smoother play. Some of the holes on the south course were either planned out for the future or are seriously in need of some re-working. i've played both courses over 10 times at least, and the second one seems to have more thought and planning into it. Props to the crew out there working on it though! I know some of the crew out there from high school and they work on both courses seemingly constantly to bring both courses up to tournament-level courses.

Cons:

Considering the courses' "newness", be prepared to get some ticks/bugs/snakes around you. It doesn't have enough wear on it yet, and they are still cutting trees out on many of the fairways. Very tall rough outside fairways can be bug and snake's haven. Bring repellant, cellphone, and check yourself when you are done playing! Also, bring food and water. The course and lake are a good 15 miles or so out of town.

Other Thoughts:

Great courses, as the former review states, playing both in a day is a great time. Just be on your wits when you head out into the tall rough and brushpiles!

Lake McMurtry The North Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course starts out with the first 3 holes in heavily wooded corridors that require very technical throws to navigate. Hole 4 is a bomber that you have to stay right or be in the woods with no shot. Holes 6 & 7 are fairly open with birdie possibilities. Hole 8 is a 531 foot bomber that closes down in the last 100 feet back in to a narrow corridor. Hole 9 is a short hole that starts in the woods then out and back in to the basket, proper placement of your tee shot is a must. The next 4 holes are fairly open but require some navigation around the trees scattered throughout the area. Hole 14 has a tight tee shot that needs to be about 200 feet, then back in to a narrow corridor for the remaining 300 feet. Hole 15 is uphill and heavily wooded. 16 is possible to birdie with a properly placed tee shot coming out of the trees. Hole 17 requires a low tee shot coming out of the trees as the landscape drops downhill and the hole plays almost 800 feet with a road that plays OB all down the left side. Then finish on 18 another 800 foot bomber with OB all down the left side that finishes with the last 100 feet in a heavily wooded area.

The alternate tees take about 1,150 feet off the length.

Whether you play the long or alternate tees, this course will require a variety of shots and test your game.

Cons:

The course is new and is still a little rough. However the crew at the lake are constantly making improvements and continuing to mow and shape the course.

Other Thoughts:

This course is the 2nd at Lake McMurtry, the combination of both courses will begin to make it on many "must play" lists as people play them and discover the challenge.

When you go to play take plenty to drink, the courses are long and the store is not always open to get drinks.
