Overall Baty is a pretty solid course. There isn't any other courses within 10-15 miles so it is a great option for anyone local. The course can get pretty soggy and muddy if it recently rained. Overall a decent mix of shots and can be fun for beginners and advanced players.

The Baty DGC is located on the eastern side of Monticello, IA. With really no courses in a 10-15 miles radius, this one stands out as an excellent course. There are a good amount of different lines to work throughout with some left to right, some right to left, some with choices. There is a more wooded area in the middle of this area giving some tunnel shots and some brush to work around. You will use many different discs in your bag to accomplish a good score here. Elevation is minimal, but the use of the vegetation makes for a decent challenge. Did play once in wet conditions, #5 was in the middle of a large puddle and it was very buggy. The other times I have played, conditions were excellent. Being a lone course in the area does make it a little more attractive, but I will generally play if in the area. A hidden gem with enjoyable rounds to give. I will play again.

+ Nice-sized concrete tee pads, all in outstanding condition (not cracked/broken, clean, not matted down with leaves, grass or mud).
+ Excellent signage on every tee pad, easy to read
+ Baskets all in great condition, believe every hole has permanent alternate locations to change things up.
+ Well-maintained grounds work (mowing, trimming)
+ Good variety of technical demands (a few holes that scream forehand, a few built for backhands, most with options for both).
+ 50/50 mix on holes that are open and those that have a tunnel/window of some sort - again, nice variety of technical demands.
+ Plenty of shade for really hot/sunny days
+ Easy access from the highway (directions on finding this course are spot on - turn in at the Pizza Ranch and go to the back, you will find a large gray pavillion - course starts right there).
+ Play was very quick, only saw 1 other group the entire round.

- Last few holes are quite open and, if you have any type of good Midwestern summer wind, they are borderline unplayable. Probably not fair to ding the course for the weather, but it was the final impression we had of the course.
- For those who can really bomb it, this is not a course you can come out and just expect to crush every hole. (not sure this is a con, but I wanted to note there are only a couple holes where you can cut totally loose).
- If you don't normally do so, please remember to bring your own water/drinks - there is no fountain or hose outlet available (not one that we noticed, at least).

We drove all the way out there to play someplace new, frankly expecting it to be somewhat of a "blah" experience. Well, we were surprised at the course, the layout, the condition and the overall experience. Would I drive there to play it again (remembering we have 8-10 other quality courses within the same drive time)? Yes and probably soon.

- course is an 18 hole loop, so hole 9 is out in the middle, not looping back to 1. so, if you want to play nine holes, you have a hike back to your car or need to cut over to 17 from 7.

Really like this course - it's fun to play. There's enough rough, trees and underbrush to penalize errant throws without making it so penal that its frustrating. Also well maintained and in good shape.

1) well-maintained, clean course. Everything is still new. Fairways are mowed and manicured. While the rough is indeed very rough, it is easy to avoid
2) A great course to learn the game! Most beginner courses tend to allow any shot you want, but this one will force you to choose, though none of the shots are overly difficult
3)As someone mentioned, the flow is great and the course makes great use of a small space. In general, I think the designers did a great job.

1) For anyone who has been playing awhile, the course will not present much in the way of challenge and many of the holes will be repetitive. Some of the slight hole variations may be more noticeable for the newer players they were designed for, but for me it definitely felt like "Buzzz, hyzer line. Next hole: Buzzz, slightly sharper hyzer line. Next hole: Buzzz, slightly flatter, longer hyzer line." This felt like about half the holes. Half of the remaining holes were repetitive midrange anhyzer shots (or forehands) and there were about 4-5 holes that required something different.

2)Hole 9 felt pretty awkward. Also hole 15 has a power line that cuts directly across the fairway 12-15' off the ground. It WILL get hit sooner or later.

3)No distances on the tee signs (I had no idea how much I relied on them until playing here!) To be fair, the distances are posted on the course map next to hole 1.

It's hard to know how to rate courses like this. It seems like on DGCR a lot of times we are rating the difficulty of a course rather than its quality. I settled on 3/5, but a more accurate description than "good" would be "an excellent course for newer players".

Great course for the area, and a great course for beginners and intermediate players. A good mix of simple open shots and difficult or blind shots. Brand new concrete tee pads and garbage cans on every hole. The course is less than a year old and there is something new, different or improved every time I go there.

There is nothing too difficult or challenging on this course. It could use a couple more challenging holes to offset the overly easy holes. Needs Tee markers with distances and pars.

This is a great course for the area, it's definitely worth stopping at.

Overall, this is a fun and nice course. It is worth a stop if you are passing by. It should be a short fun round and really close to highway 151.

Looking for a fun course, then you will not be disappointed, if you stop in here for a quick round. Has a good mix of easy hole and some challenging holes for all levels.
