A Fun, Mostly Open 18 That Provides Fun For Both New And Experienced Players 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

College Meadows is an 18-hole recreational disc golf course behind St. Charles Community College. This course is on land maintained by the county parks department, and mostly plays across open land with plenty of prairie and tall grass to keep you honest.

Location-wise, College Meadows is relatively easy to get to. St. Charles Community College is off Mid-Rivers Mall Dr. Which connects to I-70 and 364/94, one of which you're likely to take to get to this course. There are plenty of gas stations, restaurants, and other stores along Mid Rivers Dr. if you need to make a stop before or after your round. There is also a Play-it-Again Sports just up the road by I-70. Depending on where you're coming from or going, Smokin' Aces Disc Golf in Wentzville or Gateway Disc Sports in Maryland Heights aren't too far away and worth stopping by. If you're wanting to make a day out of golfing, Laurel Park and The Fort are the closest courses to College Meadows. Other than those, this course resides around the mid-point between the other St. Charles courses to the west, and Creve Coeur and Carrolton to the East.

Amenities are limited at College Meadows but will check all the boxes needed by disc golfers. As you drive along the outer loop of the college, you'll come across the gravel parking lot for the course. There is a port-o-john next to the parking lot in case you need to make a pit stop. In addition to disc golf, there is also a walking trail that goes off to the left; I'm not sure how much traffic this trail gets, but it's the only thing here other than the course itself.

Course Equipment at College Meadows has seen significant improvements recently, making the current photos on DGCR outdated. This course has 18 Dynamic Veteran baskets that I believe are brand new. There is also a practice basket next to the parking lot that has plenty of space for practicing longer putts. Each hole has two concrete teepads and a tee sign for each pad. The teepads are concrete and more than long enough for most run ups. It started raining during my round here, and the pads stayed grippy and were not sketchy to use at any point. The tee signs are robust in the information they provide, like the new signs up at Quail Ridge. Each sign has a graphic of the hole layout, distances, pars, elevation changes, direction of the next hole, and which pin is in play. There are also benches at each of the original 9 holes at the short tees.

Course Design at College Meadows mostly plays open through hills and wild prairie. Except for the last few holes that play through some tight woods, most of this course will just require you to stay on the fairways between prairie patches, which varies in difficulty across the course. Overall, this course is probably the most beginner friendly of the courses that St. Charles County oversees, with Indian Camp Creek being the course College Meadows resembles.

Navigation was probably the thing I was wondering about the most going into a round here, especially after seeing no course sign on the bulletin board by the parking lot. However, there was no point when playing this course did, I get lost or walk to the wrong hole. The navigation of this course is very natural, even with some spots of prairie grass being short during my round. There are paths between every hole, and once you find hole 1, you should be good to go on your round.

Elevation is prominent on this course, especially on the front 9. Holes 2, 3, and 5 all play downhill to varying degrees, which holes 4 and 7 both require you to really launch drives over blind hills. Other holes on the course have mild but noticeable differences in elevation, while a few holes do play flat.

Distances also vary greatly on this course. While there are plenty of ace runs on this course (especially in A placements), there are several longer holes as well. Depending on pin placement, you will likely see at least a few holes top 400, with hole 5 topping 500 feet.

Variety of shot shapes and between woods and fields is limited but improved with the recent addition of a back 9. The green on hole 15 as well as holes 16, 17, and 18 play through tight woods between the campus and a neighborhood. After 15 holes of open shots, this end to a round can be brutal if you underestimate it.

Difficulty is variable at College Meadows, with the longer tees adding distance to each hole as well as some additional gaps to mind. The tall grass can really add risk/reward to a round if you want to go for some greens and may encourage some players to play it safe for a birdie. The tall grass can really hide a disc if you have a bad throw, but other than that, this course is pretty beginner friendly overall. As an intermediate player, I found the course to play relatively easy minus the wooded holes but was still fun from both tees.

Cons:

Prairie Grass is not every disc golfer's favorite environment to play around, and this course has plenty of it. Just about every hole had at least some prairie grass lining the fairway except for the last two wooded holes, but you better believe I still managed to find some there as well. If you're not a fan of open holes that mainly have prairie outlines, this may be a course you want to skip.

Shot Shaping is limited on this course with it being so open. Some of the fairways have some curvature to them, but for the most part, you can throw whatever shot you are most comfortable with and be fine. The last two holes require straight shooting, but on every open hole, you're not really going to be encouraged to go outside your comfort zone.

Safety and Proximity isn't really a concern here, but just be aware of the neighboring houses as you play. You won't hit any of them but keep cursing on holes 17 and 18 to a low volume after you hit a tree. The walking path plays close to or even through a few fairways on the back 9, but since there's mainly just prairie grass, you should be able to see any other park goers. Just be mindful when you throw.

Short and Long Tees - While some of the long tees really change the challenge or shot needed for the hole, many of the long tees just add distance and nothing more to the hole. I appreciate the effort to put in multiple tees on the course, but other than holes 3, 6, and 16, I didn't find the long tees to really provide anything different than the short tees besides some additional distance.

Wooded Holes - I think the idea of having very tight wooded gaps like these can make for a nice signature hole, especially in wooded areas like this where the trees are planted in tight straight lines. While holes 17 and 18 provide a tough but relatively fair challenge to throw a dead straight shot, hole 16 genuinely has no fairway from the short tee. It's 100% poke and pray. I have played most of the St. Louis area courses now, and this one is in the running along with hole 3 at Watson Trail for being the hole that requires the most luck in the area. Holes 17 and 18 also feel repetitive, especially when 18 is in the A placement. I feel like just using longer placements out to the prairie area for hole 18 would add to the course, as 17 and 18 are otherwise effectively the same hole.

Variety - As stated above, this course has limited variety in terms of throwing environment. Other than some elevation changes, this course plays very open and isn't overly punishing to risk taking. This course reminds me of Indian Camp Creek Park to the northwest, but that course has some more shot shaping and obstacles to go with the open prairie shots. College Meadows was still a fun round for me, but if you want more than open shots, you will find the design of this course to be limited.

Other Thoughts:

I did not see this course when it was a 9-hole design, but the brand new 18-hole design clearly brought some improvements to this course. The course design at College Meadows really makes the most out of what is available here, with the new back 9 really squeezing out what was still available on this plot of land. While the design of the course has its limitations, the course equipment really elevates what could easily be an overlooked disc golf course. Even some of the additions they added to this course like the rock stairs on hole 7 and some of the rock work at some of the pin locations really go a long way to add personality to this course.

This may be the weakest of the four courses overseen by St. Charles County, but considering this course is sharing resources and maintenance crew with courses like ICC, Quail Ridge, and New Melle, it's great to see College Meadows is not getting overlooked.

If you're passing through St. Charles County and want a relatively low-key round of disc golf, College Meadows will provide you with just that. When I want a break from some of the harder and more technical courses in the area, this is certainly a course I will keep in mind for future rounds. If you want chill open golf, look no further. If you want to do some disc golf shopping, Smokin' Aces and Gateway Disc Sports are also worth going out of your way for.

Nice little track. Stay on the fairway! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Short and long tee pads on each hole that make a difference
Signage with good illustrations and accurate distances
Three placements per hole, current pin marked with a bolt in sign
Logical flow for the most part
Lots of benches, enough bins
Well-mowed fairways distinct from rough
Baskets in decent shape

Pretty prairie setting
Elevation changes
Quiet (though not isolated, as course is between a college and a residential area)

A couple of elevated pins that felt appropriate, one built up with a nice rock platform. One neat rock stairway.

Good choice for a quick 9 that isn't pitch & putt

Cons:

Sticker & tiny bur hell awaits errant drives, especially through the summer. You may find yourself covered in them.

Wind gets aggressive at times, particularly on 5-9.

Navigation can be slightly confusing. Hole 1-2-3 transitions could use an extra indication of "next tee," though it's not that bad. Take a picture of the course map at the kiosk and you'll be just fine.

Some will find a few holes to be bland (#4 comes to mind, short very uphill, with no other defining characteristics)

Other Thoughts:

Pictures of the holes in the media section are outdated and the course doesn't look like that now. It has grassy fairways and is not such a mudhole as it may appear, though it does get slick after rain.

I would liken this track to a nice "executive course" in ball golf. The fairways are wide and none of the pins are especially difficult.

If the rough were not so punishing with stickers and tall prairie vegetation, this would be a wonderful beginner track. I recommend not playing this course until you have played a month or two and have a little control.

Favorite hole: #3 (par 3). Downhill through a gap across a shallow valley, with well-positioned bushes and trees to test your layup if you can't clear the full distance.

I live equidistant from this course and Carrollton Park, and I'm much more inclined to go to Carrollton. However, I have been quite happy with my rounds at College Meadows. It's one that people should try, especially if the prairie aesthetic appeals to you.

Pros:

College Meadows Park is located in the northwest corner of the St. Charles Community College campus but is maintained by St. Charles County Parks and Recreation. The land has good elevation changes for disc golf and is generally well maintained. The site is lightly wooded and a lot of the park is marked as prairie restoration, so there is a lot of tall grass OB areas.

The course has two paved tees per hole, both with good tee signs. There are three pin placements per hole, so there can be some variety to the course from one visit to the next.

There are some cool shots on this course. Hole one has a cool pin placement. Hole three is a fun elevated tee to a protected pin shot. Hole five is an elevated tee shot with some cool pin placements. Hole six has a challenging gap to a blind pin with additional obstacles past the gap. Hole seven is up on a plateau with a cool long pin placement set in a rock outcropping. Hole nine has a sneaky blind water hazard past the pin. It's a fun round.

Wind can be a big factor here as the basket for four, the tee for five, the basket for seven, and all of hole eight and hole nine are up pretty high elevation-wise with not a lot around to serve as a wind break. You have to be ready to deal with that wind.

Cons:

The land isn't heavily wooded enough to really be challenging. It's fairly easy to at least par the shots, and even if you make a mistake there isn't enough of a challenge here to punish you with more than a bogey. I think the designers did what they could with what they had to work with and made a fun course, but it doesn't stand up against the better courses in the area.

Playing without a map I straight up got lost after hole one and had to wander around looking for the tee to hole two. I then followed the path past hole two to a dead end and had to wander around looking for the tee for hole three. After that I could find my way around, but those two areas could use directional signs to get you to the next tee.

Hole six makes you hit a gap to a blind pin and has a lot of shule. It's a good shot, but playing solo it's easy to lose a disc there.

The long tees on three, six and seven change the tee shot and the long tees on one and eight change the angle of the tee shot. The other four long tees just make the same shot longer.

Tall grass obstacles are a pet peeve of mine, but here the fairways are mowed pretty wide and give you an actual area to shoot at. When you combine the wind and the tall grass it can be frustrating for new and lower skilled players, though.

Other Thoughts:

College Meadows to me is the kind of course I'd like to play in a doubles league at. The shots are fun, there would be plenty of people to spot holes like six and help you find your disc in the tall grass, and you can play two times around from the different tees. That kinda of low-key good-time golf would be perfect for this course. It's a nice park and a fun layout.

Has potential! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 29, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I like this course because it has some cool elevation throughout the holes.
-Concrete tee pad (long and short)
-Nice baskets
-Fairly easy to navigate
-Maps available at bulletin board
-Not a lot of trees

Cons:

This course is pretty cool and has a lot of potential to become even better!
-Could use par info/hole layout signs at each hole
-Few trees and changing elevation makes this course usually windy
-Some holes can remain very muddy after it rains due to some low elevation.
-I feel like there could be room for another 9 holes (Maybe they don't own the property though, I'm not sure)

Other Thoughts:

This course has come cool features that make it a little challenging and different. A couple baskets are elevated by rocks/stump etc. which can make your approach interesting. I know this course is relatively new and I'm sure more improvements are coming in the future. I look forward to what this course can offer!

Concrete teepads for long and shorts
Nice water hazard on 9
Very well mowed and Maintained
Beginner Friendly

Regularly moved baskets

Cons:

Needs more trash cans
Discs can get easily lost in the prairie grass to the sides now that it is grown up on holes 2,3 and 4
Not a lot of trees to throw around
Poison Ivy Everywhere!

Other Thoughts:

This course has a lot of sun, so if your playing through twice, remember sunscreen. It also seems that every time a play this course, I throw my approach shot into the water on 9 because I forget its boundaries. Play the hole left of the basket and you will be fine.

Great Little Course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Long and Short Tee Pads so it offers 18 holes with only 9 baskets. Many challenging shots, especially if you play the tall grass as out of bounds. The layout is easy enough to follow. It's normally not very busy. Quality tee pads and baskets.

Cons:

No trash cans
Not many benches
Hole 6 is still working on drainage issues after rain

This course is one that I will be playing for years to come. A must play in St. Charles.

Pros:

Start off by saying its a brand new course that is still in the works and should improve over time. I will update this review as I play it and things change. Im not in the loop as far as what is still being done so itll be a surprise.

Brand new mach 5 baskets

2 sets of teepads both concrete

currently a disc golf only section of a park (not sure what will be added in)

Interesting use of elevation almost every hole plays up or down hill. Hole 5 is a fun top f the world type shot.

Beginner friendly course as it sits right now.

flows really well I had no issues without a map or guide.

Cons:

0 amenities hopefully they get put in this year.

not a lot of obstacles in the fairway leaving a lot of throw whatever you want type shots

No real grass right now makes it a mud bowl, but the current rough mowed prairie grass helps.

No real signage currently. There is a small plaque saying hole # and s or l (for long or short)

Other Thoughts:

Like i said before hopefully some of this changes in the next year as the park gets finished up and they get some time to work on the course.

Hole 1 plays straight ahead into a few guardian trees. wide open fairway
Hole2 plays straight a little down hill with a tree and some brush about 3/4 the way down the fairway.
Hole 3 plays down hill with a few trees to the left and right of the basket
Hole 4 plays up hill with no obstacles
Hole 5 is a top of the world down hill shot.
Hole 6 plays through a gap in a tree line to basket set off to the left.
Hole 7 plays up a hill onto a plateau
Hole 8 plays straight ahead with some brush about halfway to the basket
Hole 9 plays straight ahead with some water just a little ways past the basket.

I only played the shorts, but currently the longs seem to only add some length, but hopefully some well planted trees or something will add some difficulty.

Pros:

Added new signage!!! Great addition!!
Multiple tee shots, long and short, on every hole.
Nice concrete tee boxes.
Three potential pin placements, seems like they are moved about every couple weeks.
Great use of elevation to compensate for lack of trees/ obstacles.
Only a mile from my family's home, has become my go to course when I am in town.

Cons:

Still too new- one year later, still needs better grass. Still looks like a farm field.
Obviously a work in process.

Other Thoughts:

Will be a real nice course within a year or two. Looking to see if they add a few trees which will add to the challenges. (wrote this last year) Hasn't changed much in the last year.

Hole 1- Straight throw with all three placements across behind a line of trees.
Hole 2- Big dog leg left around some high trees. 1st placement reachable, second two are 60 and 100 feet further down .
Hole 3- Downhill to placement behind a tree, little further to open area, or longest to top of a tree stump.
Hole 4- Blind throw up hill to plateau with three progressively longer pin placement.
Hole 5- Long top of the world throw.. no obstacles.
Hole 6- Through a clearing, all three pin placements to left, all reachable.
Hole 7- Blind throw to plateau with 3 progressively longer placements, #2 behind trees, #3 top of rock shelf.
Hole 8- Big dirt pile can impede view, three progressive placements, longest out of view behind a hill.
Hole 9- Only water hole on course. Short placement in front (overthrow lands in the drink), longer placement just over the water, middle placement safely to the left of the water.
