The Traditional Flavor 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Of the courses in the Spaulding County area, Tyus is the most normal. It's challenging but without anything too difficult. The challenge is very persistent. There are a few easier holes that the open division scored around half a stroke below par on, while many of them averaged right around par in the Hotlanta tournament. I played in the tournament as an out of town player and instantly realized that Tyus is pretty opaque. It's hard to figure out the right shot the first time you play it, but it's considerably forgiving. I had some errant tee shots and was still able to save par on many holes and shoot -2 on the long pads. If you miss the designated fairway, there's a chance that you won't be in serious trouble because many of the wooded holes consist of trees that are a bit more spaced out. The rough is more difficult on some holes such as #1, #5, #7, or #12 but I landed in the rough on #9, the par 5 on my second shot and was still able to birdie it.

-Most holes have dual pin positions and dual sets of tee pads. The long pads are relatively difficult but offer many good opportunities for birdies. The short pads offer well, a shorter layout with the same par on every hole while still requiring accuracy and the same consequences for missing the lines but possibly better rewards if you hit them properly since it's easier to birdie on the shorts than it is on the longs.

-The signature holes here are also the most challenging. #10 was my favorite. This hole creates a slight change in the appearance of Tyus. The elevation is very light on the front nine and this hole, the starting hole on the back 9, is significantly downhill and is more difficult than any of the holes on the front nine. It's about 440' and very gently fades left. The woods are very punishing on both sides but it's one of those downhill holes where you really want to go for it with a straight and reliable driver. #11 may or may not be harder. This is a matter of opinion here. Same premise: long, but more open. Basket was in the long pin, which was about 460' from the long pad so this is a very long par three. You have more options on how to reach this hole because it's mostly open until the last 70-80' or so, but the woods are even more dense than they are on #10. Great two hole stretch here.

-There are some nice challenging par fours, and one par five. None of the par fours are easy on the longs, as they are all at least 500' and have difficult lines to hit. They are less lengthy on the shorts and less demanding, but still have designated lines for you to hit. #14 was my favorite of the four of them. Long and relatively straight most of the way with just enough room to throw a driver in the woods, but can still be birdied if you play it safer. I threw a driver off the long pad and landed a bit right of the fairway. The rough is tougher to throw out of, but the green is still reachable from some parts of the rough. I missed my birdie putt and rolled away left and made a 20' putt for par. If I threw a straight mid range, I maybe would've had a better chance for birdie. I could've been left with a clear 250' second shot from the fairway if I played it safer, but I wanted to go big and have the possibility of being left with a short upshot but I missed the fairway. #15 was interesting too being significantly uphill down a winding fairway. The approach shot consists of two lanes divided by trees. The outside lane is more difficult since it is not straight while the inside lane is straight and slightly tighter. #9 is the only par five on the course and is very possible to eagle from the short pad since the hole is less than 700' to both pin positions from the short and the fairway does not turn much at all. The long pad requires a right to left low hyzer to a landing zone that is maybe 350' ahead. If you make it down there, you could be looking straight ahead at the short basket maybe another 350-375' away. The long pad is further down the trail slightly to the right and is more of a legit par five but is still a pretty forgiving one.

-Concrete pads. Nice tee signs with good hole diagrams.

-There's a practice basket by the parking lot right before the kiosk on #1. Tyus has all the basic necessities for a disc golf course.

-Some nicely created rock greens on holes #3, and #16. They are a part of the high presentation of Tyus. It's well groomed too with cut grass.

-Has two loops. #1 and #9 are right beside each other and #10 is not far from #18. If you play the full #18, you end right by the parking lot. So the course is easy to find and easy to navigate. Plenty of "next tee" arrows too.

Cons:

-Some of the trees have extremely long limbspans. #6 and #7 are relatively open par fours. #6 is straight, but it's extremely hard to have a lengthy drive from the long pad. There are a couple of trees straight ahead with low limbs with wide spans, making it incredibly difficult to even pass those trees when the object of this par four is to unleash a big drive while avoiding the OB sidewalk on the right side. #7 isn't as much of an issue since distance is not important on this dogleg par four, but the wide limbs do eliminate some options. Could be taken either way. Could be thought of as an interesting challenge where you have to reach the landing zone with a very low height or could be aggravating. I didn't really have much of an opinion on this hole but the limbs on #6 to me, were a detriment. 600+ straight par four in an open area but distance is seemingly forbidden. Seems illogical like those bathroom towels my mother once purchased. They were just for show and not supposed to be used for drying off after showering. Like WTF?

-Some of the tee pads are angled in a direction where you don't want to throw. #15's long pad is not angled directly to the fairway you want to throw on. Neither is #18. The fairway on #18 is to the left side while the tee pad is angled to the right side almost convincing you to throw a wide skip hyzer that doesn't follow the lane to the basket.

-Tee signs are nice, yes. But there's only one on each hole and most of them have two sets of pads. Many of the tee signs are in between the long pads and the short pads, making them play almost as obstacle trees from the long pads.

-Nothing to do with the course or rating, but it's on the edge of the rough part of town. I stayed in a motel a couple blocks away and at the nearest gas station, there was some possible drug activity by some people hanging around in the parking lot. Worst part, a man in a truck asked me to walk over to his side of his vehicle because he wanted to "talk to me on his side". Not sure if he wanted to offer me drugs or wanted money, or possibly to mug me but luckily he left me alone when I told him I had to leave because I was "in a big hurry".

Other Thoughts:

-Tyus is a great course that is very presentable. I don't know if it was coincidental that the trees had hanging limbs or if the locals prefer to keep the limbs due to increased challenge. I would've preferred less tree limbs in play on #6 just because it's a long par four in the open. This is probably the course that most people would favor in the area because it's diverse without anything too unusual and ultimately, it's a very traditional course that is difficult enough for advanced players and forgiving enough for newer players since there are dual tee pads.

-There aren't any gimmes on the long pads, but every hole is still attackable. The challenge doesn't change much. Same goes for the shorts. Advanced players will be able to shoot under par from the shorts without much trouble at all. Intermediates could shoot under par on the shorts too.

-There's a big pond that is visible but only comes into play on #17. You tee off right beside it on #11. The locals seem to enjoy walking around the pond as a leisurely stroll. This park is for both athletics and for peace and quiet.

Very Fine Disc Golf Design 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

A brilliantly-designed, challenging course carved out of a typical city park.

-Amenities: Everything you need. Concrete tees, signage including maps and current pin indicators, next tee markers where needed, DISCatchers.

-Terrain: Not spectacular, but serviceable. A mix of open and woods, with elevation changes. Fairways are cleared nicely so it's an easy walk.

-Variety: Tightness, elevation, shape, and length. Four par-4's and one par-5. There are clever woods, open-to-closed, up and downhill, and multi-shot plays. One thing McCoy did excellently here is spread out the variety, so that no more than two back-to-back holes have the same feel.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Enough to challenge any advanced player. I don't think it measures up to championship level as marketed, but any player could enjoy hitting these lines. Thick woods shots require a well-thought and correctly-thrown gameplan to avoid wandering off the fairway; open-to-closed shots force you to correctly utilize speed control and work around the contours of hills; long par-3's need substantial distance but will be out-of-reach with any lack of control. The mix of shots is exemplary and stimulating. Considering how typical this park land is, the gameplay is remarkable.

-Multi-Tees/Baskets: You can dial the difficulty back a bit with short tees for most holes. Different pin positions will be welcomed by repeat visitors.

Cons:

Limitations of scope caused by its city park status.

-Tweener Distance: A lot of holes in the 400'-500' range. Some of these are great par-3's playing with elevation, but some of them are lackluster par-4's where a par feels unsatisfying. I think the designer probably just ran out of space in the park.

-Not Enough of a Good Thing: I think the lack of space is also the reason why there aren't more multi-shot holes. The existing par-4's and 5 are brilliant, and I wish there were more.

-Difficulty: Tyus is hard. Lower-level players will still enjoy it from the short tees, but some holes will be unattackable for those without distance, and the woods may get very frustrating to some.

Other Thoughts:

I came here expecting to be impressed, and I was. What's here is solid 4.0, and I wish there was room to expand it one level so it could be a destination-type course. It's a great course, a pleasure to play, and the highlight of Griffin, which has a disproportionately impressive disc golf scene for a town of 25,000.

Pros:

+tight in some places, a little more open in others
+some holes with good elevation change
+concrete tee pads, Innova Pro 28 baskets
+pretty easy to navigate with several "next tee" signs
+attractive park with lots of amenities including bathrooms, a walking track around a lake, hiking trails and even pickleball courts
+grass is well-maintained and there is little shule if any off the fairways
+practice basket, lots of benches
+par 4 holes require a bit of planning of how to attack the hole, especially hole 6, a downhill gem with strategically placed large trees and an OB sidewalk defining the right side of the fairway

Cons:

-if you're going to design a hole where the fairway turns a jarring 90 degrees, hole 7 is actually one of the best ways to do it. Par 4, with the tee shot requiring an accurate placement in a landing zone that has OB on the left and straight ahead at 290 or so feet, and an impenetrable forest on the right for the first 260 feet. Hit the landing zone and you'll have a pretty clean look at the basket, 250-275 feet away. So I actually like the hole, but understand why some players don't like a 90 degree turn on a fairway, it's not exactly "natural"

Other Thoughts:

Tyus is a solid course that doesn't give up any really easy birdies. I like the downhill drops of holes 10 & 11 and the uphill climbs of holes 15 & 16. Every hole requires a really accurate shot to birdie, and the par 4 holes are all designed very well. Well-kept grounds add to the enjoyment, and the double-loop design brings players back to the parking lot if a mid-round beverage is desired. The numerous trees on the course provide ample shade during the long Georgia summer. Tyus is an excellent tournament course too.

Olympic Gold 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 14, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.932 Rating) A large sprawling city park course with a few fully wooded holes
- DESIGN - I've commented on design on less than 10 percent of my reviews because it is a very subjective category. The overall execution of this course is remarkable. This is not a top tier exotic piece of land like the IDGC, Lake Claiborne or Inverness. It's just a big city park with some rolling elevation changes, a small creek and a few heavily wooded areas. I was impressed by the developed greens, especially on (10), and (16). A great mix of shots are required and balanced play is rewarded. My only complaint would be not using the large pond, which I'm sure the designers wanted to use, but were told they couldn't.
- CHALLENGING - The course will challenge players to use power, finesse, shot shaping and risk reward analysis. That stated, this is not quite a Championship level course as billed on the DGCR course page. It's actually very similar to an Olympic gold medal, which is in fact gold plated for presentation and silver on the inside. I played the Gold tees and shot under par as an Intermediate level player. I played so so. Perhaps if all the baskets were in the far position, an even par could net a 940 to 950 rated round. 1000 rated pros will throw 10 down out here. The course does have a second set of tees to tone back the difficulty. The Red tees are perfect for Recreational level players.
- UNIQUENESS - Solid variety. A few par 4s and a par 5. Highly technical holes and bomber opportunities. Right hooks, left hooks, up shots and down. As alluded to in the design pro, I wish a water clear shot was included.
- CHARACTER - The basics are solid and there are a bunch of extras. DISCatcher baskets and large concrete tees for both front and back throwing surfaces. The signage is great (see pros Navigation) and there is seating at every hole. Just about every hole has an alternate basket placement and the tee signage have basket placement indicators. There are two locations that have lost disc drop boxes. That's a first. As for things I didn't see, I did not see a practice basket, but perhaps I missed it in my haste.
- NAVIGATION - Course map located on the route between the parking and tee (1). Tee signs are well built and fairly attractive. No next tee direction on the tee signs, but there are several navigational cues between holes and most baskets have a colored basket spoke pointing the way.
- RAW BEAUTY - Not exceptional beauty, but a really nice looking layout. Hole (10) is killer looking down fairway and seeing the island green carved out by a small creek that splits just prior to the green. I liked the open down shot on (11) as well. (14) is a photogenic long carved fairway through 75 foot tall pines. In addition, the whole park just seems well cared for and I don't recall seeing much trash at all. All the fairways were mowed and large branches were few and far between. I scored the course as a 3.5 for beauty, roughly top 90 out of 345 courses played as of this review.

Cons:

Like looking for a needle in a haystack.
- MISSED OPPORTUNITY - As stated twice above, No lake shot. (18) was an anticlimactic way to end the layout seeing the pond just off to left and way out of play.
- SAFETY HAZARDS - I was not a fan of Hole (7) being a blind landing shot around the tree edge corner and up against a park road. In addition, there are a couple walking paths in play.
- ONE TEE SIGN - Two tees on every hole but only one tee sign. On many holes the sign was located between the two tees. Again, just a minor issue that's a small inconvenience.
- TIME PLAY - Not the quickest play being over 6,700 feet from the gold layout. Figure 90 minutes solo on the Gold layout. A foursome should be able to tackle the red tees in 150 minutes.

Other Thoughts:

A well rounded course with no weak spots. Unfortunately at the same time, there are no "best of the best" qualities here either. The best quality at Tyus, IMO, is the amenities and extras. This aspect I find to be borderline phenomenal, something that a good portion of the players out there hold in less regard than other qualities. I've played 10 of the top 13 Georgia courses listed on DGCR and currently would rank it 7th among those 10 courses. I'm sure Tyus gets lots of praise from those in the Atlanta area, but with so many great courses in the region and horrible traffic, I'd be willing to bet that many seasoned metro area players have yet to get out here. Players that have already ventured to regional courses Hobbs, Mulberry and Perkerson, should consider this one, among others, to hit next.
- PARK NAME - The park is named in honor of local athlete Wyomia Tyus, a three time Olympic Gold Medalist back in the 60s. What an awesome honor.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Despite being a bit of a drive outside of Atlanta, I made a special effort to get to Tyus because of just how nice and enticing this course looked, and it did not disappoint!

It has a manicured, high class look, bordering on a country club feel. The land and scenery are just beautiful and are where an outdoor activity in nature should be. The tee signs are excellent and sit within nice wooden frames that resemble more of what is found on a nice ball golf course. No surprise being a newer course that the concrete tees and Discatchers were in great shape. I also loved the nice touch of the giant rocks surrounding baskets 3 and 16 giving those holes a clearly defined "green".

The course at Tyus uses a lot of the park and never feels cramped, and on most holes you can't even see any other holes. An excellent variety of hole design exists with no repetitiveness. Though primarily playing in varying densities of wooded areas, there are a handful of more open holes perfectly mixed in and spaced throughout the round. Terrific length variation from ace runs and birdie opps to tougher par 4's/5's. Some holes provide options of attack but are balanced by others that force you to execute one line.

Tough test, accuracy/control is a must to score well. I had intended to play from the red tees being the first time here, but ended up playing most holes from the yellow since not all the reds were in. So, yeah, an entire round from the yellows would be quite a challenge.

Great practice basket area and inviting signs that lead you to hole #1.

Restrooms and picnic shelter at the parking lot.

Cons:

Supposed to be two tees per hole according to the tee signs but only about half the holes actually had the short/red tees in place as of May 2018 and I didn't really see areas cleared or marked ready for them to be made. I assume the rest are coming at some point, but are not there now. If they were there, they were difficult to find by my group of 3 very seasoned course baggers.

Related to that, having 2 sets of tees is great, but having only 1 tee sign per hole is a bit annoying in that sometimes it was placed by the yellow and sometimes placed halfway between the two. So you often have to make out of the way walks to see the sign, and then remember what it said by the time you get to the actual tee.

Course is really spread out over the park, so a few more next tee signs on the longer walks could be used as you often have to cross roads many times to find the next hole. I found everything without a map, but there were many times where I was unsure if I was headed in the right direction. Recommendation, bring a course map with you.

Unfortunately, the pond (which makes for scenic views on 11,17,18) does not really come in to play at all, so I feel on hole #18 especially there was a missed opportunity for a nice over the water shot on the finishing hole (maybe denied by parks people), but this basically means the course does not have any water holes.

Though mostly beautiful park land, some of the holes have man-made objects that interrupt the natural aesthetics- like concrete sewer access structures, and a couple large black drainage pipes laying across the fairway. (around holes 10-14)

Other Thoughts:

Once [if] the total set of Red Tees are installed, each complete with their own tee sign, this will be one of the nicest city park style courses that exists. The course was well-thought out in regards to design and detail. Locals are very lucky to have this to play on regularly. If visiting from Atlanta it is a bit of a drive out of town, but it was nice to actually get away from the high volume of people and traffic for part of the day.

We used this as a "warm-up" day before heading out to Hobbs Farm, and in many ways it has some "little brother" similarities to it.

Cons:

Keep it tight at Tyus 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Variety: Very Good. Mostly well wooded, but enough tee shots are open enough to provide some balance. Nice range of distances. Several holes make you shape lines, with quite a few allowing for multiple routes. More often than not, long/short tees provide pretty different looks.

• Challenge: Very good. Both sets of tees require control for pars. Features some tight lines and several holes "feel" longer than posted because they're in the woods. Nothing struck me as obscenely difficult to execute, but make no mistake: this course features plenty of tough holes. Most of us can par any of them, but doing so for the round would be admirable.

• Equipment: Very Good. Signage and tees were more than adequate. Yellow Discatchers are easy to spot in the woods. One set of tees markers, but concrete tees are color coded with a paint stripe at the back: red for short, gold for long.

• Routing/Navigation: Excellent. Only recall checking the map once or twice. Particularly impressive given how the course wraps all around the park. Probably has more to do with well-placed Next Tee signs to get you moving in the right direction and the ability to spot tee markers from a distance, but the point is, getting around here was easy for this 1st timer.

• Elevation: Good. Front 9 plays mostly (but not completely) flat with no major elevation changes. Moderate changes in topography become more of a factor on the back 9.

• Aesthetics: Good. Exactly what you'd expect from a short hike in and around the woods of a scenic city park. Nice, but nothing out of the ordinary.

• Design/Use of Natural Elements: Good. Solid design that makes good use of the properties attributes, but nothing exemplary. Does a decent job of minimizing interaction with non-DG traffic, particularly given how the course sprawls around the park.

Cons:

Solid design and good execution make this a short chapter.

• Wish they made better use of the water near #17 & 18 (but they may have been limited by the city on that).

• Finding tees for # 7 was a bit tough... I don't recall actually seeing tee markers for that hole. Looked like the long teed off near the park entrance and seemed a bit outlandish to me. Requires a monster L to R spike that few players possess. Didn't feel like there was a reasonable way for most players to play from that tee, other than take an extra stroke or two to get round the corner.

• Some decent walks between holes, but none had me shaking my head.

Other Thoughts:

Challenging without being frustrating, which makes for a fun round. Quite frankly, it's not unlike many courses I've played (not necessarily a bad thing). While nothing struck me as particularly unique or memorable about any of the holes, most were interesting in some way and none felt like filler holes. Not special enough to be a destination course on its own (IMO a 4.0 rating should be destination worthy), but definitely a nice addition to a road trip that features some.

A worthy tribute to the first person to successfully defend their Olympic Gold in the 100m.

Pros:

A challenging scenic beauty featuring nice concrete tees, nice tee signs, next tee signs and benches to take a break on. I would call this course long and somewhat difficult. Plenty of elevation changes and large mature trees make for an interesting round.

Cons:

Just a few nags. The course has many longish walks between holes, with a lot of jumping back and forth over the parks roads. I personally thought that a few holes here were poorly designed. There are some wicked thorn plants that could tear you up if not paying attention.

Other Thoughts:

I would not recommend this course to new players. I would recommend sturdy hiking shoes and long pants. This course beat us up pretty good, but we still had a fun round here.

Grade-A Must Play! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Let me start by saying the course and park was in excellent shape, still had that new-disc smell! It was scenic and made you want to jump out of the car and start playing.

This is one of those courses that the designers knew what in the world they were doing. First - it flowed well, mostly very easy to navigate. Second - no stupid holes. I never once walked up to a tee and thought 'what in the world were they thinking?'

And best of all, this course was a blast to play! I played the Blues ('cause I like to torture myself), and even though they were longer than my arm, they made the course fun and fairly challenging. I also play the blues (or yellow's in this case) to see the entire course.

One thing the folks that drew this one up did - and I wish more would emulate - is they made the course easy enough from the short tees, that new players won't get discouraged. Intermediate players can handle the long tees, and advanced players can get a workout. I shot a 54 from the long tees playing it blind (was KILLING the puts!) and I'm not that long of a thrower.

Even the very long holes (#9) which look crazy on the tee pad, were manageable.

And the course wasn't overly tight, the fairways were - well - very fair. Tree kicks could cost a stroke, but most allowed you back on the fairway to continue on toward the basket.

A few of my favorite holes...

#4 is great, well thought out RHFH shot - which I don't have! But thought the hole was great.

#8 is nice long, touch shot. Too much height and you're blasting past the basket

#10 is a superb hole! Man, talk about needing a touch! Too much height, or power and you have no shot at a birdie. Gotta keep it low an slightly straight.

#11 is good hole, plays like #8, but it's scenic with the pond

#15 is a tricky shot. I threw a high anhyzer shot, thought I reached the top of the hill, only to hit a tree and roll a loooooong way! Great, hard RHBH hole.

#16 is a pretty shot up to the rocks (similar to #4)

Cons:

Very few, mainly my opinion...

#5 Long tee - kind of a potluck shot through the trees. As you approach the ridge before the basket, that could be cleared a bit

#7 Long tee - I mean, really? Either crush a mile-high RHFH to clear the trees on the corner, or throw a mile-high anhyzer (what I did) to get a round. Really no path to corner

#18 - I did a few 360 degree turns to find the basket. Only place I really had a navigation issue

Other Thoughts:

This isn't the hardest course I've played, but is challenging. What it is, is FUN! Wish I had time to throw from the shorts.

Pros:

I think the well thought out use of space, elevation, natural barriers, mixture of open/tight holes is why I like this course so much. Definitely was designed by people who love disc golf for people who love disc golf. The park was super clean, parking and starting point well marked. The Tee Pads are in good shape. The signage was good. They have alternate pin placements on some holes and some of them looked like they would be really cool to play at that location.

Cons:

The only con I have is that the signs at each hole show a red tee and most of the holes do not have a red tee. So I walked around and looked on every hole on my first round wanting to play reds first. On the back 9 I quick looking.

Other Thoughts:

Wonderful course that will challenge every player. I am a rec/intermediate player and it took lots of good shots, sometimes great shots just to make par. I like courses that don't give up easy birdies.

Most holes are set up for right handed players. I throw left handed.

Has concrete tee pads for both tees, most reds aren't easily found for first time player, so just throw yellow..

Has nice tee signs with alternate basket placements

Multiple basket placements on most holes

Has many benches and trash cans throughout course

Has next tee signs posted throughout - easy to navigate

Good mix of open/wooded fairways with doglegs and elevations

Nice split of the front and back nines in case you want to start on hole #10 (that comes in handy when there's a large group teeing off on hole#1)

Had whole course to myself on a Tuesday morning

Well-maintained

Restrooms

Water fountain

Free parking

Cons:

Most holes are set up for right handed players. I throw left handed.

Not all holes had easily found red tee boxes. Gave up looking for them; threw yellow instead... no biggie

Watch out for small, exposed tree stumps as they're easy to trip on

No indication of current pin placement - had to walk down some fairways to locate basket before teeing off

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice course for Spalding County that I enjoyed playing. This course is pretty solid and will require a variety of shots to shoot a low score. This course is really good if you want to test your skills in control and accuracy as there are some tight, but fair fairways. I do wish there was some kind of indication of the pin placement before throwing a drive as some baskets are not visible from the gold tees. I highly recommend playing this course if you're in the area.

There some long walks between holes such as 2&3, 3&4, 7&8, 10&11, 17&18 but they're not bad

Worth a Trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great layout. The course was clearly marked and beautifully maintained.
It was a difficult course, but fair enough for an above average player to go under par.

Cons:

A couple long walks between pins and the next tee, but that is to be expected on course in a rec park.
Course is relatively new, so some of the stumps from smaller trees can trip you up if you're not paying attention.

Other Thoughts:

Great course, will play again.

Cons:

Restrooms at the start but not again.

Other Thoughts:

Well thought out course. Maintenance is good. Bring some sun screen, some hole are out in the sun.

A little of everything 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 3, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I really enjoy playing this course. I has a great mix of wooded and open holes as well as long, short, dog legs, straight, etc.

It definitely had me going deep into my bag at times.

Cons:

Does not take advantage of the pond at all. I assume it was a condition set forth by the park.

Other Thoughts:

I play an alternative tee for 18 by the rocks near 17's basket. It makes for a great elevated tee shot over the pond.

-Great layout, you'll use every shot in your bag of tricks, and this course will produce great players in the years to come.

-You want to be a better player? Play Tyus!

Cons:

It'll make you sweat, cuss, and drive one to drink.

Other Thoughts:

A definite must play course if you're in Georgia!

Very solid course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This is a well-conceived, well executed design. The course has defined fairways, many with multiple routes, most accommodating realistic flight patterns. Fairways are obvious from the tee and baskets are visible, wherever possible. Good shots are rewarded, bad shots are punished. No bad holes, which is saying a lot. The flow of the course is excellent, with two nine-hole loops.

-Good mix of holes with variety of par 3's, a couple of par 4's and a "par 5". I threw a bunch of different shots: backhand, forehand, roller, turnovers, etc - always a big plus to use so many different discs off the tee.

-The land is a scenic mix of open grass and forest with a lake coming into view (not into play). Most of the course has a secluded feel. The forest is a nice mix of hardwood and pines with several great young pine fairways that should mature very nicely.

-Great maintenance. Given how new the course is and based on other reviews, I expected it to be much rougher, but fairways were very clear and the rough wasn't that bad

Cons:

- There were a few holes that didn't seem quite finished in terms of tree removal, and that interfered with the shot off the tee. In particular hole 15 from the long tee (see Heartman's review, had 3 trees with pink tape that I assume will be removed to create the intended line); hole 18 was really tight (branches on the cedar were also flagged); hole 10 was also really tight with an awkward line given how long it is

-Currently lacking tee signs, but not bad to navigate if you have a smartphone with the hole info and map from this website. Distances on this site seemed shorter than reality on 11 and 12.

-Hole 18's teepad does not seem to face the intended fairway. I played from the grass in front of the tee.

-Tweener distances for the intended par on some of the multi-shot holes. Hole 9 seemed more like a par 4 (I had a long putt for 3 without throwing 2 great shots); hole 15 also seemed too short for a par 4

Other Thoughts:

I'd give this a 4.25 rating if I could. Great course that's a definite contender for the best city-park DG course in Georgia, as Kevin said.

As another reviewer noted, this isn't a destination course, it's a city park style course. Its not overly challenging, but is fair, and very fun to play. I think its better than most 4.0 courses, but needs a little more work for me to round up to 4.5. The few cons I've listed above are temporary and will be updated in the future. Excellent course given its age.

Best City Park course in Georgia 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Greens are well defined, there are no pins that are placed in a bunch of random trees, which is typical for Georgia.
-Fairways are fairly well defined, and many holes offer 2 types of rough. Intermediate rough that is playable out of and the Primary rough for really bad shots.
-If you play the preferred flight paths in the fairways, there is no poke and hope golf shots through trees
-Landscaped greens and tee areas
-Two concrete tees (Some of the Am tees are still a work in progress) and Two pin locations on every hole.
-Well balance of Lefty, Righty, Straight shots
-Well balance of front 9 and back 9 of par 3's & 4's, 2 par 4's on each the front and back and #9 is a par 5
- Nice use of elevation with a few holes allowing for very long shots due to down hill elevation.
-Well design to allow other park pedestrians (non disc golfers) safety
-The front 9 and back 9 start and finish at parking lot
-Scenic lake views around a small lake on holes 11,12,17,18, Fish food available on tee 11
- Benches on every hole
- Bathrooms, Water Fountain at the turn, plenty of trash cans

Cons:

-There are some Ticks and Chiggers in the wooded areas, bug spray recommended.
-Since it's a brand new course, some of the deep, deep rough is still a little rough with briars, and privet.

Other Thoughts:

-After playing many courses in Georgia, it's by far the best Park course in the state. There are a couple of privately owned courses that may be better, but as city park courses go, it is one of, if not the best in the state.
-The county is very supportive of the course and disc golf

Best (only) course in Spalding County 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 8, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good variety of holes - short & long, left & right, uphill & downhill, tight & open

Located in nice park - plenty of parking, water fountain, bathroom, pretty scenery

Separate front nine and back nine with water fountain and bathroom at beginning and end of each.

Decent signage for every hole now, a few holes remain unsponsored but noticed a Fredric Bastiat quote posted on one of them!

Primitive benches at start of every hole to rest your butt and/or bag.

Several trashcans on course.

Course now has a couple lost disc drop boxes which I thought was a neat idea. Evidently the park takes care of trying to get a disc back to its owner, all you have to do is drop it in.

Fairways are generally away from public areas so very little interferences or distractions.

Cons:

Fairly new course but has been worn in pretty good although it could still use a little clearing in some areas.

Occasional yellowjacket nest but ticks and chiggers seem to be bout gone, probably thanks to the cooler weather though.

Excessive distances from pins to next tees on too many holes, you will spend nearly half your steps walking from pin to next tee.

Alternative tees are only set on a few holes so far.

Haven't noticed any alternative pins set yet although they are shown on the new signage.

Other Thoughts:

Course is fun and challenging. Am sure it will only get better with age.

Hole 6 has a big cypress that will eat discs if not careful.

Hole 9 has lots of broken glass jars in culvert near basket on right so watch your step.

Hole 15 is a bit of a challenge going left then right and way uphill.
