Its Goin Down

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Baskets are Mach 2's. Generally these dont like to catch putts but for whatever reason I have no issue here.

+ Teepads are concrete and grip well. Nothing too new or too old here. The pads are long enough for us tall folks, they are flush with the ground, they grip well and they would be Conrad approved.

+ Bathrooms. Right as you enter the park you will see a nice bathroom with toilets and running water. Then once you get to hole one there is also a potty right behind the tee.

+ Elevation is used to its full potential here from what I see. You have the biggish uphill shot on 1 and then you have the roll away potential on hole 21. Past that the course is pretty flat, but when there is some sort of elevation it is used very well. There are holes that just slightly go up or down and some pins that are right on the edge of a little mound. It doesn't add too much difficulty but it makes it fun.

+ Wooded vs. Open holes. Timber Park is a great example of a perfectly wooded course IMO. The fairways are super fair and there are jus the right amount of trees. There is only one wide open hole with no obstacles. The mix of super wooded to slightly wooded is the perfect amount.

+ Shot types. You kind of need it all here to score well. While being able to throw straight in the woods is generally all you need to do to score well in the woods, here you will need to be able to throw on all angles in and out of the woods. Forehand, backhand, rollers. You kind of need it all here to do well.

Cons:

- Teesigns. C'mon man. How do we have a disc golf course that has been in the ground for this long, that is well trafficked and this well loved for not have teesigns. The teepads are numbered but thats all you got. Not the worst thing in the world since the course is beat in well enough that you can find the next hole pretty easy. Most holes you can find easily from the tee area so distances aren't missed too much. It just shocks me that there are no teesigns here. uDisc with be your best friend here.

- Sh!t Creek. Right next to holes 10-13 you will find a pleasant looking creek that is anything but that. It smells like poo-poo, thats all.

Other Thoughts:

Timber Park is beautiful. If this was my home course I would be jacked. I love this style of course and would come back everyday if I could. If you are in the area to play Milo, I would suggest that you take the short drive over the river to play here. Beginners to Open players will enjoy this course.

Pros:

Timber Park located in Estacada Oregon right across from Riverbend DGC. This course plays pretty much of a flat terrain. Not to much of a elevation change. This course is placed right on the campus of PGE. Very nice piece of property. Great forehand opportunities as well as backhands.

-Great Concrete tee pads as well as Mach 2 baskets. Great drainage for this course. I played this course in the winter and it was dry with only a couple muddy spots. Easy navigation around this course. Hole 19 pic is old they now have a real tee pad. Pretty Good restrooms by the parking lot as well.

-By the Picnic area there is a practice basket as well which is nice. Navigation to park is tricky if you use google maps.
-Hole 1 is very uphill shot. There is a mando. The play is either a forehand or a backhand if you are right handed.

The last hole play it in the woods a lot. These holes are pretty fun to work on your technique shots. Not much to say about this course.

Some trees need to be cut down on hole 2. This hole is tight. Hole 3 is a backhand hyzer hot around the mando. Hole 4 is a straight away shot. This hole is tucked in the woods. Hole 5 is a wooded hole. Same thing straight away. Hole 6 fun little shot around in the woods. Hole 7 is a shot right somewhat like hole 6 just is a little more open.

No pro shop. Hole 12 is a hole where you can loose your disc. The river on the right hand side. The creek is flowing very fast so if you throw in there is a possibility you could loose your disc.

Cons:

Tee signs wood be nice on this course to make it easier for people to see where the basket is if it is there first time playing. 21 holes can get very tiring. Just a very interesting number. Although they have the property for it.

I think they should remove some more trees on this course. The reason for that is that most shots in the woods get knocked down by the tree. Definitely on the last wooded hole they need to clear a bunch of hanging trees going every which way.

Sewage smells terrible on the last few holes. You can get some nasty spit outs on these baskets. They need to add more chains or upgrade to discatcher baskets.

Hole 14 has a insanely hard double mando to make they. They need to take the right mando out.

Other Thoughts:

Milo is right across the river from this course. Milo is a little better that's my opinion but I do like this course a lot. Tournaments there can interfere with your round. I do find frequently a tournament running while I wanted to get on.

Quite a few people on the weekends although you do get those tournaments that I was talking about. 58 hole rounds are common if you want to go to Milo afterward. There is a bridge that crosses the river over to Milo very close to each other.

Solid Course which is somewhat overshadowed by Milo McIver 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 7, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This course has excellent disc golf amenities, ie, nice tees and baskets
-This is also a fully functioning park so there are bathrooms and other activities here
-Course layout makes great use of the allotted area, using both the wooded section and the open parts well
-This course seems to get a lot of play, the fairways are well beaten in, and there are clear paths to the next tee areas
-This is a relatively flat course, with a massive hill that come sinto play on holes 1 and 21, other than that there is sort of a continuous gradual slope through the whole course. For the elevation present, it is used very well.
-Basket placements are always thoughtful. There are maybe two baskets on the whole course that are just out in the open, most baskets are tucked away, or in a tree cluster, some are even raised on an artificial mound.
-I would describe this course as "moderately wooded" there are many holes that into a couple big trees are part of the whole, but when the course dives in and out of the woods, trees define the course well. Also, there is a definitive 50/50 split of open and wooded areas at Timber Park but the course doesn't play 10 holes in the woods than 11 holes out, it dives in and out, which is a great feature that keeps a player on their toes
-As mentioned above, Navigation is kinda tricky out here if you are just out by yourself, but that is unlikely to happen
-Garbage buckets on every tee seem to cut down on the garbage throughout the course, great solution to my least favorite problem.

Cons:

-Baskets are in good condition, just not my favorite type, Mach III's just aren't the greatest
-Tee signs aren't present, there are faded numbers painted on the tee pads, some of them are even incorrect I think, but it is really no big deal because uDisc can help and there are likely tons of locals out here that you can follow.
-There is a creek that comes into play on one whole, normally I would complain about how it isn't used more, but, it really stank. For holes 10-13ish there was a massive stench that was overpowering, not sure what the heck the deal with that is, but it was annoying
-The lengths are pretty consistent, on probably 75% of the holes it is a fairway driver shot (for me) and a couple driver or midrange tee shots sprinkled in. I would like to see a little more variety out here. There is definitely space for a couple longer holes and/or par 4's and maybe not 21 holes. Don't get me wrong, this place fits in a solid 21 holes, but I always feel that the strange number of holes courses could be made just a touch harder/professional at 18 holes. And that's not to say that this is a beginner friendly course at 21, it isn't, i think it might be a little harder.

Other Thoughts:

This course is super close to Milo McIver, so many people probably don't set out to play this one specifically. However, it does cost money to get into the state park, and timber is free, so it seems that more locals actually play timber park, and I can't blame them, Milo is a great course, but it is hard, and long, Timber Park, which is no small feat to play either, is almost a break, and free. If you're in the area, make time for both courses, Milo and timber are both great.

Pros:

21 hole course with decent mix of distances. Number are marked on the tee pad/baskets are in good shape. Fairly open course but no bad holes. Hole 1 is an uphill throw from parking lot and 21 is a short ace run with the steep backdrop going down to parking lot both fun holes.

Cons:

No tee signs and navigation can get tricky. First time players will want a map otherwise probably will get turned around a few times specially hole 2 to hole 3. There's no real signature hole or just that amazing fun factor to me...it's not repetitive but it dosen't give you that awesome hole type feeling out there

Other Thoughts:

Timber is a very good course and not fair to compare it to Milo but something about timber just feels missing. However it's for sure worth the stop and play. It's good for all skill level and many players will enjoy it

No stepchild to McIver 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 22, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I like Timber. Free to play with no park fees. I'm still learning the game and this course allows some forgiveness due to how well groomed it is. Plenty of open shots and wooded tunnels to learn on. I like how you end up at the parking lot after a round. 21 holes seems odd but it does allow you to squeeze in 3 more before you go home. Locals have always been nice to me and I usually play alone. Be nice, get nice.

Cons:

First time I played this course it was really hard to play contiguous holes. Lacks proper signage and next tee markers. I use U-Disc with gps on my phone to help me find the next tee. A few more times out there and I will have my bearings.

Other Thoughts:

You could make an epic day of disc golf between this and McIver which is literally across the river and about 5 miles by road. I think at my current abilities, I like Timber better than McIver, but that is no slam. Lucky to live in an area with so many good courses. Hornings, Pier Park are also worth a visit if you are passing through for a few days.

Nice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice tee pads, bark chips around hole to settle shots, so they don't roll away, nice mix of holes (open, tunnel, dog legs left, right, straight), very clean. It is so nice to not see trash and empty beer cans everywhere. Plenty of score card/maps at the first tee box.

Cons:

Baskets are tricky to locate on a couple holes your first time out. Map doesn't always depict exactly where the basket is.

Other Thoughts:

Groundskeeper is very friendly, locals are very cool and were eager to help a noob find his way around. I couldn't figure out how to log a lost disc on the page, but I lost an aerobie epic on my drive on 11. Usually my thumber starts left, goes right about; this time it decided to start left, go right, then coast an extra 80 feet long and to the left, into the ivy or water, not sure. If you find a purple epic hit me up please.

Well layed out course ending at lower parking lot
Plenty of trees = plenty of shade
Boat ramp and lake for after the round
Not too hilly which makes for a nice round
Not too many places to lose a disc!

Cons:

No signs,so bring a course map just to stay on track,
Even with map we threw in the wrong direction (left/right) a few times.

Other Thoughts:

Great course and a 15-20 minute drive off I-205,so weekends shouldn't be bad as this is worth the drive to play. Well taken care of and one of my favorite courses to play so far.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 16, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Timber Park is a 21-hole course set in a park owned by Portland General Electric in Estacada, Oregon. PGE maintains the adjacent hydroelectric facility on the Clackamas River.

-This course has a great variety of hole lengths (200-600ft), technical and open lines, and holes with multiple routes. Most holes also have 2-3 pin locations.

-Gravel, wood chips, and short cut grass help this course be one of the best winter courses in Oregon.

-Large concrete tee pads and the baskets both have numbers to help you find your way. There are no signs, but no long walks from green to tee either.

-The park includes a playground and baseball field, but the land occupied by the disc golf course is disc golf only.

-Park services include a clean portable restroom by the first tee, a permanent restroom by the upper parking lot (closed in winter), a course map on a bulletin board near the upper parking lot, and trash cans and benches on every hole.

-The layout is very flexible. To avoid big groups you can easily start on #1, #2, #3, #4, #9, #10, or #12.

Cons:

-There's not much bad to say about Timber Park. The course layout is a bit compact; tees are often within 40-50 feet of baskets. It can get crowded on weekends. Long throwers might get bored of the large number of 275-325 ft holes. That's about it.

Other Thoughts:

-Milo McIver, just across the river, is a world-class course. This place is definitely not of that caliber, but it's excellent in its own right. Both courses are very well maintained, expertly designed, and a ton of fun. For me, the only significant difference is the incredible natural beauty and Pro-level challenge of Milo McIver.

Locals are the worst 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 8, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice tee pads, super long. Nice baskets. Holes are for the most part long with typical obstacles and distances. No surprises here.

Cons:

LOCALS SUCK. SERIOUSLY. Poor signage, no map. Layout is not clear at all and flow makes it difficult to figure out where to go next. Overall, this seemingly incredibly typical course was unnessecarily difficult to figure out which could easily be solved with a map at hole 1 that is up to date. There are no tee signs, and teepads do not indicate where you are or where you are going.

Other Thoughts:

MORE ON LOCALS SUCK. I've played a lot of disc golf, in numerous states and even a few countries, and have never been so ridiculously aggravated by rude and obnoxious locals. I showed up on a non-busy summer day, had trouble finding the first hole and finally stopped to ask where to go. the group was less than helpful and kinda sent me sorta towards hole 1 but literally had the attitude of "we don't want you to play our course so if you cant find hole 1 on your own, go away." I finally found hole 1 but the tee sign was useless and there was no map. I found a make shift map on my phone but it ended up being useless as well. Started walking towards where I thought hole two would be and found more locals. asked if I was in the right directions. was again treated horribly by locals who wished I would just leave. Played 2 & 3 and by the time I found 4, a group of 6 locals came out of nowhere and jumped in front of me and made sure to drive and leave the pad just as I found hole 4. Then took literally as long as they possibly could on that hole, including standing next to the basket to smoke while I was waiting to drive. Finally i called ahead "coming in, fore," and they glared at me as I parked it and almost scuffed their shoes. they yelled at me as I sprinted up to my tap in birdie hoping i could jump in front of their huge group but YET AGAIN, they rushed their drives and made sure to be off and running by the time I got to the tee pad.

I have never been so incredibly disrespected by locals in my whole life. the people who regularly play this disc golf course are making a bad name for the entire game of disc golf. I understand Portland gets busy on courses but this was not a busy day and the way I was treated was absolutely ridiculous. If you are in a group larger than four, you need to always let people play through and this local "better than thou" attitude is tossing fuel on the fire that is portland prententious players who aren't as good as they think and act.

I'd like to give this course another chance, but it will be in the cold winter when I can assure it will be vacant. It seems like it has the potential to be a decent course with some longer and difficult holes.

UPDATE 2019: I wrote the original review four years ago and nothing has changed. Its all the same horrible nonsense. The sad part is that I've read every single review of this course and they all seem to point to my same concerns, yet somehow this course still gets decent reviews. Someone will say "the parking is bad, no map, no tee signs, very crowded, FIVE STARS GREAT COURSE." This course is sub par and the people who regularly play it make it a horrible experience. If you see a review on this site that is anything above two stars, it is from people who are trying to compare this course to Milo because they don't want to pay $ to go to Milo. There is no comparison, Milo is obviously WAY BETTER. they are just upset that Milo costs money and thus are trying to pump up this course like it is some kind of close by reasonable counterpart, which it absolutely is not. Read the actual text of the reviews, they are all negative in content, don't read the stars, and be prepared to be disappointed.

Pros:

-21 holes all but 4 have multiple pin locations! Always fun to see what position they're in
-clean tee pads with 10 gallon buckets as garbage cans every other hole or so
-mostly open shots but there is always a tree or twenty to make you question what you want to throw
- good variety of length to the holes
- friendly grounds keepers run by PGE

Cons:

-nothing wrong with the course just things I wish were there that would make it better!

-pro/am pads to give different angles and range
-signs at tee pad showing multiple locations with footage to each pin
-better baskets (they're not bad, just wish they were nicer!)

Other Thoughts:

This has been my home course to learn on. Great range of different shots you can throw. Good course to learn how to get distance out of your discs (stepping up from the small 9 hole courses). Quality baskets so you're not chaining out all the time.

Has a park for kids to play at.
Restrooms and porta potty in the park

Would have given the course a 5 if it had the added wishes. 😁

Pros:

Lots of variety. Great practice for all types of shots. Good ranges. Tees marked. Not overly crowded. Good wind but not too windy. Cement tee pads.

Cons:

No tee maps or pin location indicators/markers. Playing the course the first time, had to scout most holes. Front nine were a little clearer than the back 9. 18-19 broken/missing? Pins for 4, 15 & 17 are all within a few feet of each other. Course map?

Other Thoughts:

The back nine seem like more of an afterthought to the front nine. I didn't play Milo didn't know about it when I played this course and wouldn't have had time to play it on this trip anyway. This is another course that could be really great with a little help from tee maps, overall map, better direction markings, etc. This seems to happen to too many decent courses.

Big Timber 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Reminds me somewhat of Pier Park with the heavy evergreen timber and subtle undergrowth to define the fairways, but is different due to the lack of elevation. Timber Park is a fun course that let's you air out some long shots, but has enough trees to allow you to shape most of them. There are a couple of neat holes that are tight, thrown in as well. You will find a nice variety of left and right turning holes and some things in-between. I could imagine someone bringing their roller game, too. You will find the fairways and landing zones fairly ample, too. After playing some really hair-pulling courses before this (Horning's Meadow and Stub Stewart), I found this to be a relaxing, but still challenging change of pace.

Timber seems to have lived in the shadow of Milo next door, but if I lived in the area, I would surely play here frequently. As a WA guy (and not what I'd call a course bagger), I had never made the time to come here, as I would head directly to Milo. I'm glad I came here and judged Timber on its own merits.

The locals were friendly and helped guide us to some of the upcoming holes (a little tricky to find some with the outdated map 7/'11)

Cons:

I wish there were more danger zones to create some drama on the course. Other than a couple of mandos (and a fairly menacing rough on #17), it seems that there are not elements to punish poor shots unless you hit a tree early.

The map is a little outdated and we had to ask people where to go next on a couple occasions. Hole #19 tee used to be near the end of #18, but now you must make a small walk back toward #1 pin to find the new tee.

There are no signs. The consolation is that they have neon numbers on the tee pads themselves and numbers on the baskets - I guess those two aspects would be considered a pro.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice place to get in an enjoyable round. If you have never been to Milo or Timber, I would suggest you come here first. You will likely enjoy what the course offers, then go to Milo. It is like having your main course before dessert.

I like the guy in the photo with the plaid shirt around his waist. I thought, for some time, that he was wearing a Kilt! Imagine that Huk Lab.......Or not!

Dry and dog friendly! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This may not matter to some, but if you like bringing your dog along for the walk, then Timber Park is a course you're going to love. As long as you keep a decent rein on him and clean up after him no one will make a big deal about your dog being off-leash.

I really enjoy coming here during the fall/winter because it usually stays pretty dry compared to a lot of other course around the area.

Some delicate layouts thru the trees as well as some wide open holes. Good mix.

Cons:

If you aren't a dog lover, then you probably won't enjoy all the freedom dogs are aloud on this course.

Somewhat confusing if you haven't played it or aren't with someone who has.

Sh*t creek. Especially during the winter, if you are unlucky enough to lose one in the creek it is very unlikely you'll get it back. It's not as bad during the summer but it gets pretty deep and swift the rest of the year.

Other Thoughts:

I rated this course a 4 because it has a good mix of holes, is usually kept up pretty well, and because it is so dog friendly.

This place is just a good time. More often than not the people are friendly and laid back.

There are enough different shots needed during the round that it should be enjoyable for all skill levels.
