Beautiful but extremely wet 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

On the edge of Bays Mountain and the South Holston River, the Laurel Run DGC is surrounded by beautiful scenery in a tranquil environment. An excellent place to enjoy a picnic and hike, Laurel Run also offers the opportunity to partake in some disc golf during your visit.

The course is easy to navigate. The practice basket and first teepad is near a parking lot.

Hole #4 sits in the shade of the mountain and might be the nicest hole on the course. At 235 feet, an OB stream on the right and a narrow fairway provides a nice challenge.

Cons:

Tons of mud and soggy terrain. The course holds LOTS of water. When I played at the end of April, there was plenty of standing water on the fairways of several holes. There was evidence that the basket for hole #8 had been covered by flooding during previous rains. (Advice: Wear old shoes.)

The final hole finishes a short walk away from the parking lot.

The teepads are small and don't permit much of a run-up.

Holes #5 through #7 are wide open and are susceptible to retaining much water. And holes #1, 2 and 3 are open except for a couple trees.

Holes #8 and 9 are precariously close to the river. If your shot splashes into the river, you will NOT be retrieving it without a canoe.

Other Thoughts:

The signs originally listed a few bisecting sidewalks as OB but those markings appear to have been covered up.

Holes #5 and #7 are listed as par 5s at 520 and 528 feet, respectively, but considering those holes are wide open, the par should likely be 4 for anyone but beginners.

The surroundings are beautiful, and the course is a nice addition that provides a challenge for families seeking to disc golf. However, the course's water retention is a major issue and the soggy conditions and threatening river might discourage casual players from participating.

A Much Needed Course for the Area! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 14, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Easy course to navigate. Signs are posted at each hole, and the next tee pad is never far away.
- Innova baskets and concrete tees are in great condition.
- Very good challenge. There is a fair mix of wooded par 3's and open par 5's, so be prepared to use every kind of disc.
- I am predominately RHB, but I threw a couple RHF and Tomahawk/Hammer drives, so great mix of drives needed to land in the fairway.
- Beautiful little park which also makes for a good hike.
- I cannot stress enough how nice the challenge of this course and the variety of the holes are. I finished the round at -1, a beginner should be not far above par, and an experienced player could even walk away at -4/-5.

Cons:

- The course does hold water. I played after a couple days of rain, and some holes still had large puddles on the fairways.
- Can be difficult to find the park, especially if you are not from the area. I recommend using the latitude and longitude in your GPS of choice.
- For holes #6-8, there is a river running along the left-hand side. Be weary of drives, because a disc in that river will NOT be retrieved.
- Grass should be cut and fallen branches picked up, but those are little in regards to course conditions.

Other Thoughts:

It is an honor to be one of the first people to play this course, and especially the first to review the course on this site. This is my 15th course review, so I certainly feel as though I have written a thorough and honest critique. A DG course between Kingsport and Morristown has been so needed for a while. I would certainly recommend this course for players of all skill levels. Playing alone it took me just under an hour to complete my round, so no matter from where you may be travelling, this course gives an afternoon of great disc golf to every player!
