Disc Golf Connect Four Anyone?

Pros: -Baskets OK
-Concrete tees
-Some multiple pin positions
-Good mix of open / wooded with many trees
-Some boomer holes with 3 over 500' in long positions
-Play around the old thresher is interesting
-Two pins up on tell stumps in long positions (#1 and #7)
-Signage OK (DGA Peel n Stick (TM))
-A Disc Golf Connect Four Game at first tee!!
Cons: -The 3 newer holes (7,8,9) play around baseball diamond and are unavailable during games
-3 easy mandos on #1 and #2, much harder mando on #8 (right of the pole at the end of the fence to the right)
-Minimal elevation
-Wind can really effect play (especially to the #1 long basket)
Other Thoughts: Royal Park is home to a very good DGC along the north edge of Royal, IA. Expanded to 12 holes, the course plays mostly along the north and east edges of the park to stay away from other activities. The 3 new holes do play through the smaller of the ball diamonds and are unavailable during games (signage directs you to jump from #6 to #10). While the terrain is flat, there course really utilizes the available trees to work your lines. A couple of good tunnel shots exist and there are a few mandos to keep you honest. There are 2 on the first hole that keep a tight tee shot. Hole #2's just has you stay right of the old farm equipment (alas, the #2 basket was in the long position and not in the elevated green area the day we were here.) The more difficult mando is on #8. You are teeing from down the right field line of the small ball field and the mando wants you right of the post at the right end of the fence down the left field line. With #7 and #8 playing right through the smaller field, I understand closing 7, 8 and 9 during games. #1 and #7 both have four foot or so tall stumps with the basket on top (in the long positions). Wind was a factor the day we played, making putting into #1 exceptionally tricky. The coolest part of the course, for me, was the connect four game at the #1 tee (See pic). I had never seen this before. There are 2 stacks of discs for you to use (a stack painted blue and a stack painted white). We used it to figure out who teed off first. This bit of joy set the whole round and we had a good time playing, even in breezy conditions. You could maybe improve the signage to boost the rating a touch more. If you're hitting the Okoboji courses, swing down, come enjoy some connect four, and a decent course. I will play again, if in the area.

Good design for city park

Pros: +12 nice baskets in a well kept city park. I'm glad that they put 12 here. It's better than 9 and 18 would have been way too crammed. It's ok to not be in 9s if it suits your land better.
+Concrete tee pads that are good size and condition.
+Signage is the old DGA peel and stick on white background. They did a reasonable job with these and navigation was fine.
+2 pin positions on a lot of holes. Many have significant variations between the 2 spots in distance or angles. I'd like to play all the holes in both to see how it plays.
+More trees than you would expect in a small town city park. Plays somewhat technical. Some holes are very tight and some have just a few trees. One has an old piece of farm equipment!
+Great variety in length. Some are in the 200s up to 600+ if you get the long position.
+Shouldn't lose a disc here.
+Good for beginners and better players. The design does a good job of providing some challenge while not being too difficult. The park style setting helps this vs a more wooded setting.
Cons: -Very, very flat. Like no elevation at all. Except 2's raised basket.
-Other park activities could come into play here and there. Baseball field and cinder track are close by on a few holes. No big concerns but this definitely is a multi use park.
-No indicator of which pin position is in use- not a huge deal as you can see the baskets a lot of the time but it would be nice to have a marker of some sort.
-Overall this course is limited by the small town park land that is available. They used it well but it's hard to accommodate disc golf and other park activities well.
Other Thoughts: +Best holes:
2- Around the old thresher to a raised pin
4+5- Tunnel style shots that reward mid range accuracy and punish you if you go off the fairway.
+Overall, this course is designed well and I had fun here. If you come in expecting a intermediate level park course, you won't be disappointed. I'll play here again if I pass through.

The hole 9 yards.

Pros: Can be very technical.
Nicely placed trees.
A good variety of shots can be utilized.
Did well with space available.
Very organized.
Compliments all types of throwers.
Very quiet area.
Cons: Completely flat.
Lots of short holes.
