Pros:

Nice mix of elevation
Multiple tees, usually far enough apart to make a difference
Beautiful surroundings
high-vis baskets

Cons:

Serious lack of signage
No outstanding holes

Other Thoughts:

Starting with the most obvious: this course is not first-time-visitor friendly. There is currently no signage, and calling the provided course maps crude is generous: they have no scale whatsoever, and sometimes aren't very accurate in the direction from basket to next tee. Some of the holes (most notably 3, 10, and 11) are rather long and the basket is hidden even from the halfway point on the hole, and there's nothing to tell you just how far away the target is.

There is a beaten trail that you can mostly follow, so it's not impossible. It isn't needed for hole 1, and begins on the right halfway up the hill past hole 1. If you get to the tees for hole 9, you went too far. Also of note, the path from 7 to 8 is a long one: just keep going and it will eventually come to the open. After hole 9, head back to hole 1, and look in the trees past and to the right of 1 to find the tees for hole 10.

Beyond that: this course mixes up elevation and distance quite well. Unfortunately, it doesn't mix up needed throws quite as well. Many of the holes, especially in the first half, have only a moderately narrow throwing lane going straight, and I ended up using the same throw over and over. It began mixing things up a bit more in the back nine, but not enough for my tastes.

There were no really bad holes on the course, but none I thought were outstanding, either. It is a technical course, with only one grip-it-and-rip-it hole, and even that one has a dogleg at the end of it. I don't find this a negative--I prefer technical--but other people might. The surroundings are wonderful, with a reasonably mature forest all around.

Pros:

A longish technical wooded course with 2 sets of tees (except hole # 4??, didn't matter my drive was in the valet parking zone for an easy birdie, lol).

Very well made wooden bridge (with steel beams) going over a small ravine.

Well designed!!

ELevation. Man, I love these kind of courses that offer Elevation and distance that allows the player to show off their skills throwing their disc through a dense forest.

This area of Ohio has yet to be commercialized. so be prepared for a BEAUTIFUL setting (I can't wait to come back and play from the long tees and explore more of the park and area!!)

Cons:

Without tee/ next signs one WILL have some difficulty to navigate the course (I had a very generic map and only had a few spots of where I had difficulty finding the next tee. I had minor issues @ finding hole # 2 and # 8 according to the map)

Needs some TLC (aka... mowing)

not enough parking or restrooms.

no benches

as of right now, one had to step up on the tees to play the hole, but I'm figuring that in the future the park dept. will fill the sides of the cement tee pads with fill dirt to make it looks more professional and easier to have a long delivery for their tee shot.

This area of Ohio has yet to be commercialized. So bring what you need and then some.

Ohio State parks don't have trash cans. So one has to deal with the baloneyheads that litter. Come on people, we're all grown up. Pack out what you pack in (very simple to most). People who litter are trash !!

Other Thoughts:

But because I met my fellow travelin' DGer, Sir Boston (from the Steubenville area) near hole # 1. I had a course map. Sir said he had some difficulty finding certain holes. I did too, even with a very generic map. But I blew through the course in 45 minutes from the short tees. and left happy as a lark because of the potential once this fairly newer course gets beat in. Playing from the short tees and only using 2 pink 150 class sidewinders and a 173 gram Stratus discs I shot under par from the short tees. In fact I got on the birdie train from holes # 4-8.

The roads my GPS took me from West Virginia to Burr Oak state Park were the windiest I've ever driven throughout Ohio and I've played over 223 different disc golf courses in Ohio. If your getting to this course via a motorcycle one has to ride highway 555 and highway 78. It was a rollie coaster ride with the thrill that Cedar Point could never offer!!

Many holes I enjoyed. I wonder what most feel what we're this parks signature holes. I felt hole # 3 was one of them. BIG cranker with a "S" type of fairway with basket hiden over a small knoll.

Other Thoughts:

Course design: 4/5
Scenery: 5/5
Tees: 5/5
Signage: 0/5
Navigation: 2.5/5
_______________
Total/Average: 3.3/5

This course is awesome. I'm so glad that I made the trip down here to play it. Although I finished plus from the short tees, I still felt satisfied. Only a great course can leave you feeling that way even though you didn't perform well.

Where do I begin? Well, first of all, I played from the short tees so my review will reflect the shorts only.

Man, this course is way sweet. The course has only 2 holes in the open...all the rest play within mature forest, with plenty of elevation changes to keep things fresh and interesting. The tee boxes are generous, and for a forest course, I was pleased to see the highly visible Innova baskets (with yellow flags on top to boot!).

The course winds through heavily wooded property in Burr Oak State Park, which is basically Wayne National Forest territory. The holes will test every shot that you have. There are some holes that are super long AND in the woods which makes it even more difficult. In fact, some of the holes are so long in the woods that I gave the design a 4 for that reason. That said, there are discernible lanes to shoot through on virtually every hole. There are uphill and downhill shots. There are ace runs. It has it all.

So what is lacking? Well, navigation and signage are lacking. This is the only reason that I didn't rate this course way higher, and these things will be fixed in due time and then I will update my review accordingly. But as for today, I can tell you I had a hell of a time trying to navigate this course. For the most part, the navigation is okay even without signage, but there are a few key points in the course that require some foreknowledge or else you'll do some walking around (hence why I gave a 2.5 for navigation).

Here's some things to watch out for: 1) After hole 1, walk along the road that is behind the basket and that goes uphill. That will take you to hole 2's tee, which is just inside the wood line on your right. I made the mistake of turning right from the basket and walking into the woods via a wide path that went into the woods. That will take you to hole 2's basket, and then you'll have to walk uphill on the fairway to get to the tee, so don't do that. 2) After hole 5, hole 6 runs left and uphill. I made the mistake of turning right after 5 and walking down some walking path that goes to nowhere. 3) After hole 9, DO NOT walk into the woods to the right of hole 9's basket. I walked for a considerable distance into those woods, and while it had some beautiful views, I wasted a bunch of my time basically hiking around with a bunch of gear on my back like some kind of Army basic training exercise. Instead, you need to double back from hole 9's basket and walk past hole 1's tee. Hole 10's tee is inside the wood line on your left once you get past hole 1's am tee.

The bottom line...This course is an amazing piece of work. I love it. I can't wait to go back next summer after it's all done. My average score on this course is 3.3, which I have rounded up to 3.5. I will make it at least a 4 or 4.5 once the tee signs and navigation are fixed.

Great! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 6, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very long, technical course that provides the player with a variety of shots in the woods and a couple of wide open shots as well. In the area, you will not find another course that provides you with the variety of shots that this course forces you to play.

Nice sized tee pads. New baskets.

Overall, just a great course. It is very scenic, and it is a really tough hike which I really enjoy. The holes are extremely tough, but they are fair. If you play here consistently, you will definitely become a better player.

Cons:

The course is definitely not finished. There are no tee signs or signs to help find the next hole.

If you are not aware, the 10th tee is next to hole 1 tee box in the woods. Dont follow the path right by 9 basket...it leads to nowhere. Trust me.

There are a couple trees that I would have probably gotten rid of on a few of the holes. I think they take away some really cool lines that could be used if they were gone, but hey, thats disc golf.

Other Thoughts:

I honestly would have given this course a higher rating if it were finished. This 4-star rating is off of the course as it is now, but once its finished, it should be rated even higher.

Off to a great start... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 15, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are both short and long tees. I like how even the short tees feel like they play long. Good design and flow, excellent use of the land and terrain.

Cons:

Small parking lot by the first hole...once this course is finished and reaches it's potential there will be more cars there than that can provide...

Other Thoughts:

This course is off to a fantastic start, and should develop into a great addition to the SE region. I'm not going to knock the course for lack of signs and navigation since it's still under construction. It's definitely worth checking out even in this condition and will only get better with time...

Good wooded course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very challenging holes through the woods, which focuses on accuracy. This course is very hilly, which makes it a vigorous hike.

Cons:

There needs to be more markers to indicate where the baskets are located and the next tee pad. Markers at each tee showing the hole shape and distance are needed.

Other Thoughts:

I've now played three courses in southern Ohio and this is definitely the best and most challenging. I would recommend playing this course with a partner.

Unfinished But Tons of Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent use of the terrain. Course flows well and the entire course has been well-tjhought out.

Cons:

At present, the course isn't finished so there are no tee signs, and not all the tee pads are installed.

Other Thoughts:

If this course lives up to it's potential based on playing the unfinished course, it's going to be excellent and will be among my favorite courses in the area.

Excellent use of the hilly landscape of the area. Every hole seems well-planned by someone familiar with disc golf. The first hole just gets you into the woods and hole 8 & 9 are also kind of gap-fillers. But once you are back in the woods for the back nine, you return to the well-designed holes found from 2-7 on the front nine.

Some of the back nine holes are incredibly long and technical. I can only assume this will change as the course is developed.

Hole 15 is no doubt the signature hole of the course, a cool downhill throw you'll want to have a few extra drivers for.

Excellent mix of technical and uphill/downhill throwing. Once you get into the woods, nice and secluded although you aren't as deep in the woods as you will notice veering near some of the park roads at times. But you're always away from any other park activity.

If you are near the area, it's definitely worth the minor frustrations of playing the unmarked and unfinished course. I was really glad I did, I almost passed on it.

There is a lot of potential for this to be a 4-star course if they follow what's been laid down so far. Some good tee signs, hole-to-tee indicators and a map/kiosk will make that happen. The course as designed is excellent, now they just need to finish it up.
