It is surprising that a town as small as Hico has a good size 18 basket disc golf course. The course was well mowed.

I have never been in a field with more sandburs. I took my dog. She started limping. I had her lay down and picked the sandburs off of her feet. When she stood up, she had sandburs stuck on her hair. I brushed them off. She walked a few feet and started limping again. I finally ended up picking her up, walking out of the field, laying her down, and picking all of the sandburs off of her and off of my clothes. Field sandburs can grow up to three feet high. I cannot imagine trying to play in this field if it were not freshly mowed. I would never take my dog back there. There is also a horrible industrial odor around the pin on eighteen. -- Tee signs with all of the basic information (hole number, distance, map, obstacles, etc.).
-- Course flow is good. Holes 1-11 follow a walking path. You cross the road for the remaining seven holes, and that flow is good as well. No. 18 ends across the street from the No. 1 tee.
-- Hole 15 is the best hole. You have to keep your disc low as you throw under U.S. 281, but at 226 feet, most players can reach the basket with a good throw.

-- There are a LOT of cons, but safety is a common theme. Holes 1-6 throw mostly along a walking path. In addition to the walking path, there are 5-6 picnic tables in the fairways on Holes 1-3. Hole 4 misses most of that, but it has you throwing at the walking path and right, over a bench. On Hole 5, you throw over the walking path TWICE. Hole 7 has you throwing to a basket less than 15 feet from the outfield fence for a baseball field. So not only could you throw a disc onto the field (and possibly hit a kid), you could get hit by a baseball while you are putting. No. 9 is a 411-foot hole that has you throwing over the walking path at around 380 feet, and the basket is located within 20 feet of playground equipment. Hole 14 tee is 30 feet left of the 13 basket, and both of those are in danger from a drive on 18. A drive on 15 could hit someone standing on the 16 tee, and the 17 basket is SO close to a major four-lane highway (U.S. 281) that hitting a car is a real possibility.
-- Exacerbating the safety issues are missed opportunities: On a long walk from 2 to 3, you have a nice flat piece of land right and below the walking path. A hole there would be one less hole throwing along the walking path. The basket for 5 could be moved about 50 feet right so that you don't throw across the walking path TWICE. The 7 basket could be moved about 50 feet right so that you are away from the baseball field and don't throw over a walking path. Also, there is unused land right of the 7 fairway that would easily accommodate two decent holes. The safety issue on 9 is an easy fix by shortening the hole to about 330-340 feet and putting the basket in a small stand of tree short/right of the walking path. The best piece of land (moderately wooded) that is currently part of the course is underutilized with only four holes (12-14, 18). Inside the walking path around holes 3-6 is a HUGE empty field. It's not great land for disc golf, but it could be used and eliminate some of the holes that throw along the path.
-- Layout definitely favors RHFH/LHBH.
-- No. 12 tee sign is missing. It appears people are teeing from the start of the walking path as you cross the street.

-- No benches at the tees, but there are picnic tables and benches along the walking path.
-- Parking is really limited at No. 1/12, but there are other options: Utility Street at holes 8/9 and West Avenue B at U.S. 281 for holes 16/17.
-- There is an RV park/campground across the river from the course.
-- Elm Street (the address listed) is a gravel road at the course.
-- Water is in play, but there are no water carries.
-- The openness of the course might make you think this is good for beginners, but you would be wrong. The accuracy needed because of the walking path (and the river to the right on Holes 1-3) plus the distance (351 average with 6 holes longer than 400 feet) makes this NOT beginner friendly.

It is a very interesting course. For players tired of the same sort of holes. For a tiny town this course is Awesome actually. 1st holes are tight and against a river. Some long most take a little skill. Great baskets and signs. Back 12-18 across the road. #15 under a bridge is super interesting and fun to be honet.

#12 I could not find tee pad.

If you are close to this town for sure worth it. It is very unique but in a good way.

the back holes 12 to 18 are across the street and in part of the park that is not maintained. Grass was 2 feet tall on the very back holes.

I don't have too many good things to say about this course. This is case of either someone wanting a course in there home town or the city wanting a course but not willing to put aside the land needed for a reasonable course.

First off, your #1 holes is throwing down a jogging path and the park is literally 50 ft wide. They have planted several trees on both sides of the walking path that will make the holes along here impossible to not throw down the path. (hole 11 uses the same fairway at part of 1 and 2 coming back)

Basicly, you follow the path around the outside of the park wtih all turnover shots (for right handed players) with several of the holes being way over 300 ft to make them 2 shot holes.

After throwing hole 7 (into the baseball fields that are locked) you throw towards an old bridge and back down to the walking paths again.

Now when you finish hole 11, you have to walk back tot he entrance of the park, cross the street and then you have the rest of the course including hole 15 that throws under the bridge. I actually liked these holes, I think they should redo this part and just have 9 holes over there, then maybe a short 9 holes in the old park across the bridge.

I like the idea of this course. Honoring the local military fallen is noble, and it looks like they plan to spend some money here. The signs are nice, the Mach III baskets are deep, and the park itself is very pleasant. Very creative use of "leftover" space around the park. We came out on a Saturday morning and had the whole place to ourselves.

The basic layout is unfortunate. The first 11 holes play around the outskirts of the baseball fields (fenced and locked) with the creek on the other side of the fairway (inaccessible and unforgiving.) This makes the fairways super narrow, and your shots have to be very precise. I lost a disc over a barbed wire fence, and climbed a couple of chainlink fences to retrieve two others. There are no tee pads as yet, and the very flat course doesn't drain well. We slogged through some interesting mud for holes 13, 14, 18.

Multi-use park, so be aware if there are other people. Holes 1-3 are throwing at picnic pavilions along the walking path. Holes 12-18 are located across the street. The creek is in play for quite a few holes, and it's not one that you're going to find a disc in. Hole 15 plays across a creek, under a low bridge, with more creek on your left. I had to skip that one.
The signs only tell you the distance and par, would be great if there were maps as well, so you knew where you were going.

Overall, I think in a few years, if it hasn't been raining, and you happen to find yourself in Hico, it's worth the time. Definitely NOT recommended for beginners.
