Mountaintop disc golf course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is set up on the ski hill area of Grand Geneva resort. Which by the way is all the way to the east end of the property. Check in is at the ski chalet. $5 per person per day. They offer a nice map and scorecard at the chalet. The people that work in the chalet were more than helpful. I found out where to play hole 1 because the attendant came out with us and explained the layout of the first 4 holes. I don't know if this is how it always is but it was for us. On to the course itself. The baskets are Disscatchers that are in fantastic shape and catch well. All have a large yellow flag atop with the hole # on each which is awesome. These are all mounted well and level. Hole # on the yellow band does face the basket which is also a major plus.. The flow of the course is pretty easy to follow. We had no issues with this. There are tee signs at every hole too. They have a basic map of the hole layout, pars for either tee (all are 3's except for 8 and 9 blue) and the hole #. Nothing amazing but serve their purpose fine. The elevation is your main challenge here and with that comes wind. They go hand in hand. The course is pretty short distance wise and I'm ok with that. There are a few trees to contend with throughout but barely. Many ace opps here as well. The course will never be busy. The fairways were all mowed and the property itself was in pristine shape. There are a bunch of really fun uphill shots and a bunch of awesome downhill shots. Hole 11 is the most challenging hole. It is a cool blind downhill shot through thick woods on both sides. You do NOT want end up in the rough on the right especially. Like I did. It is super thick and drops off quickly. Even the left is pretty thick. Both will probably cost you shots. Hole 9 is probably 400' up to the pin at the very top of the hill, blind going left to right that you don't want to overshoot. Holes 13 and 14 are two of the other best holes here. 13 is blind uphill right to left and 14 is slightly downhill left to right with a few trees you need to get through first and pretty thick rough you don't want to end up in. 15 and 18 are short, very aceable but blind downhill shots.

Cons:

The tees are not level at all. That being said it is on a ski hill so nothing is level really. The tees are also just grass and I feel like gravel (largeish stones) on quite a few. The rough is thick as thick can be on a few holes. Basically the ones with rough. And by rough I mean the longer, unmowed areas off the fairways. This stuff is unreal. I don't recall having seen to many types of brush that can eat discs like this stuff can. I was extremely lucky not to have lost 3 discs thrown into this stuff. Make sure to have a spotter on these or your disc is long gone for sure. The distance between the 2 sets of tees about 10 feet on most holes making it pretty pointless even having 2 sets since it is pretty much the exact same look. It would really be nice if they made some longer holes here. I don't have a big arm at all but a lot of these holes are too short even for me. The distances listed are in yards and even when those are translated into feet cannot be accurate at all.

Other Thoughts:

I was not not expecting much or really anything here. I was pleasantly surprised. Hell, I really liked this. Nothing spectacular at all but just a real fun well designed course for the locale. There isn't anything like this anywhere near here. Open and easy? check. Major elevation...wait..SE WI? Add it to the list. I will play this again. Is it worth $5? Not really but it still is a fun spin. Couple this with the White river course in Lake Geneva and it makes for a fun day of golf. I'd say give it a shot if you're nearby but definitely not worth going out of your way for.

Paradoxical pleasure. 2+ years

Pros:

Beautiful setting. The course plays up and down a ski area for the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa. It's a big hill with spectacular views of a beautiful part of Wisconsin. The view in the fall will be stunning.

Wide open elevation shots. Honestly, this is the reason to play this course. Most courses I've played with elevation are in the woods, here you are throwing wide open into the wind. It's incredibly satisfying to throw your putter into the wind at a basket 50' below you.

Hole 11. From the long tee this hole deserves to be on a gold level course. Unfortunately it is the only stand out hole.

Cons:

The distances on the tee signs are in yards, and completely made up far too often.

So much of the potential of this property is dashed with an uninspired design. This could have complimented a growing number of excellent disc golf courses in the area. Unfortunately the course is mainly ho-hum. Most of the holes are wide open and dull. The terrain isn't used to punish an errant shot near as often as it should.

The tee boxes as not all level. Some of them are poorly placed.

Other Thoughts:

This course is obviously designed to appeal to families at the resort. The holes are mostly straight ahead with little challenge. Considering how many lost discs we saw, it's obvious that the course is frequented by folks who are just looking for something fun to do. I've played a lot of courses designed for this, and if that's the criteria, this course is one of the best in that regard.

Not all of the course is basic. Hole 6 was good fun, as was 7, 8 and 10. None were technical, but all used elevation well. Hole 13, 14 and 18 all featured out of sight baskets and that was a bit of a challenge, although I birdied two of them.

Apparently this course is pay to play. We tried but the ski lodge where you pay to play was being set up for a wedding and no one knew who we should pay. So we played. For free!
