Its 5 holes

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Mach 2's for the baskets I believe. They aren't the best but they are better than homemade.

+ Super easy to find and navigate. The parking lot is big and the first hole is right next to the parking lot.

+ The holes are wide open and not too far, it makes for a great course to bring newer players to.

Cons:

- Rubber teepads. They are two pieces of rubber placed together. They aren't great, but rubber usually isn't.

- The walk from 3 to 4 has you cut thru the baseball diamond. I haven't had this be an issue but if there is a game going on then you wont be able to walk thru the field.

Other Thoughts:

This course isn't the best but I don't think that its meant to be. This is just another community course in a small park. Its a great course for beginners or for a nice time out with the kids. Don't expect much out of this course, but it is another course.

Decent, after you calibrate your expectations 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Vernon Town Hall DGC is a little 5 hole practice course that encircles a pair of baseball diamonds on land owned by the town hall. Nobody will call this a destination course, but it's a neat setup for a little bit of plastic-chuckin' practice.

1) Baskets/Tees/Signs - the baskets are Mach 2's, which I wouldn't want to be seeing at any 18 holer, but for a practice pitch & putt like this, they're fine. Ribbed rubber tees which actually gripped pretty well. Not sure if I'd want to play off of these in the winter, but for the rest of the year, they work. Rudimentary signage, but it's better than a surprising amount of courses around town.

2) Straightforward layout: 5 holes that start at the parking lot, end at the parking lot, and the next tee is easy to find from the prior basket. One transition does force you to walk through the outfield fence of one of the diamonds, but it's still pretty intuitive.

3) Kid-friendly: I think this is the strongest thing Vernon Town Hall has going for it, is that the course is very friendly for beginners. You can bring children just learning the game/learning how to throw here, and won't crush their spirits with extra-difficult jaunts through the woods. There's a playground next to 5's tee (thankfully not in its line of fire) that the kiddos can go play on too. One hole is randomly kind of long (roughly 325' IIRC) to offer some basic challenge to the grown-ups.

4) Surprising elevation: 3 of 5 holes either play uphill or downhill. No hole rises or falls more than say, 15-20' or so, but I was expecting "flat as a board", and it did come into play.

Cons:

1) Unplayability during baseball/softball games - this is a no for me, dawg. Can't be walking thru the outfield fence when there's a game going on, or be tossing plastic that has any chance at sailing onto the fields (which is easier than you'd think).

2) Challenge/"Caliber of Golf" - it's 5 pitch and putt practice holes. You've got a bit of elevation, and one hole over 300', but otherwise, it's obstacle-free holes hovering around 200' all the way.

3) It seemed like there was potential on the available land for a handful more holes in the woods/low lying areas beyond the borders of the course. Would have been a few more certainly more difficult holes to spice things up if so.

4) Location: I appreciate the town for putting this in, and they certainly can't control where they're geographically located, but this is getting kind of out in the boonies for anyone who doesn't live within 5-10 miles or so, so its reach is going to be limited.

Other Thoughts:

Vernon Town Hall DGC is at its best when you appreciate it for what it is, a 5 hole practice course that you can bring the kiddos to show them the ropes of the game, and let them run around the playground when you've finished up. There's value in these sorts of courses, even if it's kind of out there for most MKE area residents.

For experienced players, Vernon probably won't move the needle much, and isn't really worth any significant travel to, unless you're the extreme bagger type.

There are far worse ways to spend an hour or two with the family & kiddos, though!

5 Hole Bagger Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(0.916 Rating) An open forgettable layout.
- QUICK PLAY - 15 minutes... that players will wish they had back if they stray here without doing some research. I did like the fact that the course plays in a loop.
- NAVIGATION - No map, no directional cues, no problem. The course is so open that I just turned my head until I saw the next marker. I often spotted it before I even finished the prior hole. Perhaps (3) to (4) can be tricky, but its intuitive to keep walking around the fence. Tee signage is adequate for this style of course. I really only needed the distance.
- ACEABILITY - Three tee shots 200 feet or less. I mind aced all of them before throwing.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - A mostly forgiving layout with hazards limited to tall grasses along the fringes. A good place to learn the game for those that live within a couple miles. The park appears to be well keep up too.

Cons:

Very limited appeal.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - The number of natural obstacles in play is disappointing. Trees only come into fringe play on (1), (2) and (3). Hole distance variation is minimal, 175 to 315 feet. There is no water and elevation change is less than 15 feet on every hole. 850 rated players should be able to shoot are birds from time to time.
- UNIQUENESS - Way too open for my tastes. All 5 baskets can be attacked from numerous angles. It's pretty much a "look at the distance and grab a disc" kind of layout. I just ran right at basket every time. 4 times with putters and once with a driver.
- MULTI USE HAZARDS - Ball field fences are in play on 3 of the 5 holes.
- CHARACTER - Other than reasonable tees and tee signs, there no other disc related extras. The baskets are lower quality MachIIs. There is no seating, extra tees, alt basket locations or practice baskets. I saw some locked up stacked picnic tables under a large pavilion. There is also likely a restroom somewhere in the park, but I didn't see where.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - The most beautiful course around for those that have only played this course. I'd put Vernon among my bottom 15 for beauty, out of 326 courses played to date.
- MISSED OPPORTUNITIES - Unless I am mistaken, but it seems as though that there's room for additional holes in the park's fallow areas. Perhaps enough room to add at least 4 holes, maybe more. Hopefully that's the future plan.

Other Thoughts:

The Vernon course needs more of everything. More holes, better use of site features, more challenge and more comfort touches. It's likely a nice place for practicing multiple shots off the tee as those that come here will likely be the only one throwing. Other than for course baggers and those that live within a mile, there is no reason to ever come here.

Pros:

this is the kind of course we need more of, within multi-use parks
grow the sport is always positive
couple of pretty cool shots
nice slopes in the terrain
well kept and clean

Cons:

its hard to say cons about a course that is what it is
some greens could have been cut out more from the surrounding green

Other Thoughts:

i feel like i see this course everywhere because i see this type of park everywhere, a small baseball diamond or two with some woods around them. this course is great to perk the interests of people who might not have been exposed to DG.

2-disc practice course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained multi-use park in a quiet neighborhood. The grass was mowed well and baskets and pads are in great (new) condition. Teesigns are nice and have all the needed information (and then some).

The course plays in a logical progression around a couple of baseball fields. Course play does not seem to interfere with any other activity or walking path.

Great place to take new players to introduce them to disc golf, especially if it's during a time when the baseball fields are not in use.

Cons:

Mach II baskets aren't really course quality, but probably fit the budget for the park. Most of my putts caught on the back-side of the chains.

To get from hole 3 to hole 4, the best path is through the outfield of a baseball field. If they could clear a path along the outside of the fence, it may work better when the parks are in-use.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't be disappointed to have this in my neighborhood. It's a good beginner park or practice course for midrange and putter driving. I'd probably have given this a 1.5, but the park is kept in immaculate condition. It was nice to spin this one and check it off the list and not be afraid of any hinky paths or anything like that!

Great practice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Signs are very nice, more than what I expect at a practice course and the rubber tee pads are a nice cheaper alternative to putting down concrete pads. Holes are laid out in a way that it would be very hard to lose a disc and there are few trees, long grass in your way. Though it sounds very open, it doesn't feel like you're just playing in a field.

Cons:

Four of the five holes are easy birdie holes and the longest is just over 300 ft. Would like a few more obstacles and one longer hole (400 ft at least), but it's a great start and a great practice course to get a few holes in at.

Other Thoughts:

I lived just across the street from this park for years and I can tell you it's very quiet when no softball, rugby, or soccer is going on. Would make for nice, peaceful practice time.
