Rocket 3? More like Rocket Me....to the next course, asap!

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Reeths Puffer (say that five times fast) High School has a nine-hole disc golf course!
- Hole #'s 1-3 play through a wooded section. Short, manageable holes are largely spoiled by overgrown fairways, roughs, and pathways.
- Hole #4 plays through a "prairie" area...we're talking totally unkept, gone to prairie, knee-high grass and weeds.
- Hole #'s 5 & 6 are the same dealio: punch it through a way overgrown gap out of the forest and out into the prairie.
- Hole #'s 7-9 work their ways back through the same crapola but manage to piece together a couple of reasonably presented holes (in that they weren't totally overgrown).

Cons:

- Overgrown, unkept, nearly to the point of unplayability.
- Rutted natural tees.
- Rudimentary signage only detracts because they placed the posts right where a RHBH player would follow through, making it a real hand-smacking risk.
- Otherwise also short and kinda boring.

Other Thoughts:

- I dunno, it's not summer break anymore, so that's out as an excuse for not maintaining the course. Lazy and a bad look. If you're going to commit to putting in a course, at least mow it. Otherwise it'd be better served pulling and donating the baskets to a local club.
- The prairie was kinda pretty, just not fun to play through.
- Closed during school hours.

Would be awesome for P.E. class! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Rocket 3 DGC is located on the grounds of Reeths-Puffer High School near Muskegon, MI. A sign at the first tee indicates that the course was the idea of a special needs student at the school who enjoys playing disc golf. Awesome!

This course has 9 baskets that are in fine shape, and 9 wooden tee posts with a hole number on them. There is a decent mix between tight wooded vs. open holes, and some holes that go between one and the other.

The course plays in an area of the school grounds where no one else would be, and the holes do not come near each other. I think this is a safe course design for even high schoolers to disc golf on.

Cons:

This course does not have a map, nor are there any distances marked on the tee posts. This course is very short, probably about 1500' total length. I would estimate holes #1, 2, 4, and 8 in the 100' range with the remaining holes only slightly longer. I doubt any single hole reaches 250'.

There are no tee pads. The course is fairly overgrown with some trees down and tall grass in the open areas. It was difficult to determine where the basket is located on some holes. Even for a course this short, improved tee signs and a map would be helpful.

Other than some trees there is really no challenge here for anyone beyond recreational level. The pin placement is nothing special.

Several of the holes play around a low area that looks like it might become a pond in the springtime or after a good rain. One of the holes even plays across this area. It wouldn't be a difficult water carry for even an average DG'er (I threw across the area with my putter), but for a high school student in P.E. class it might be challenging.

Other Thoughts:

The course is closed to the public when school is in session (7:30 AM-3:00 PM). Presumably some of the students have the option to come out and play this course during P.E. class, or maybe on lunch break. I wish my high school would have had a disc golf course on site!

If the course were maintained a little bit (mow the fairways and remove the downed trees) I would bump my rating up to a 1.5. This course is fine for the students to play but it doesn't have much to attract even a recreational DG'er. Unless you are trying to play every course in the area, this one can safely be skipped.

Nice little course especially for the beginner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good course for beginners - Very short holes with very little risk.

Very good use of unused space - Tucked in on the boundaries of the high school.

New baskets - Brand new DGA baskets. Could use some visibilty tape and/or hole number, but quite nice.

Cons:

Tee areas aren't marked at all, other than the pole with the hole number on it. .Actual tee pads would be a great addition.

No distance or directional information at tee poles. We were able to find our way around easy enough, but more information would make it easier for newcomers.

No play while school is in session (7:30 am - 3:30 pm) Not a huge con compared to the safety of children, but still a con.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed playing this course. I see a lot of potential to get students involved in the sport. The course is just long enough that a veteran disc golfer isn't completely bored, and the novice player isn't completely discouraged. Overall, I'm sure my family will utilize this course on a regular basis.

I see a bad moon ryceng-a... get it? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetic-- plays in the side woods and around a retention pond on the campus of a high school. The woods had many intersecting paths that I assume were/are regularly travelled. I would watch for non-DG'ers.

Baskets-- new DGA's (I think) could use a little orange tape or flags to denote where they are in the woods on some holes. Overall, in nice shape and very visible.

Teepoles-- help to guide you to the next tee but offer nothing else. Locals (?) have drawn a rough shape of the hole on the top of each pole.

Routing and nav-- pretty easy. just follow the path and typically, the next pole is visible from the previous basket.

Cons:

Challenge-- This is an extremely short course, like, just barely breaking 1000' course. the lines in the woods are pretty well defined, straight. #3 offers a little variety as you throw out of the woods and towards the retention pond.

Tee areas-- tend to be marked by logs on either side of the "box" but they are rutty and have stumps a lot of the time and although not much run-up is needed here it would be nice to be able to follow through on some of the longer looks.

Other Thoughts:

My worry with this, and any super short course, is that this will attract huckers with their Meijer bag bags and r-pro bosses to try to get as many short woods hole aces as possible, drink their hamms and smoke as much as possible on school grounds. The West Michigan disc golf scene is full of really great people but there are also a very significant amount of "monkeys" that will go out of their way to destroy a course for fun. That is my fear for this course. Please take care of this little fella... he needs our guidance!
