Pros:

-Five baskets on wooden spools (See pics for Basket #1)
-Cool Hanging Basket for #5
-Quiet

Cons:

-A long ways off the beaten path
-Camping on site (near #4 tee pad, along #6 fairway)
-#2 Basket Destroyed (See pics)
-#4 Basket missing
-Longer than ankle deep fairway, waist high rough, high disc loss possibility
-Tee sign is hole # only and facing the wrong way
-Natural tees

Other Thoughts:

Orion DGC plays in what is referred to as "Star Field" in the Whiterock Conservancy south and east of Coon Rapids, IA. The course is several miles off of IA 141, with decent signage to follow (Follow the directions given). Pulling into the parking area, I saw 4 baskets right off, thankfully there was a map/scorecard at tee #1. The baskets on the giant wooden spools are kinda cool, and the hanging basket is even better (#5). Unfortunately, someone didn't like #2 (in a heap at the edge of the fairway) or #4 (missing completely). #9 doesn't really fit the mold as it is just in a normal collar cemented in the ground. Play was OK, although the distances marked on the map/scorecard were in yards, which was a little bit to figure out. #2 is long (467') and a little tough to locate (especially with the basket in a pile), though #9 is even longer (519') and over higher meadow. The road comes into play quite a bit, #1, #3, #5, #6, #7 and #9 all have the road in play at some point. This is also a camping area. It appears most of the campsites are on past #5, but there are 2 along the #6 fairway and #4 tees off near another. I see what the designer was trying to do here, especially in an natural area (the Whiterock Conservancy). With the spools and the hanging basket, I'm sure this can be "brought in" for the winter (though I'm not sure it has been.) Mostly open, but winding along the edge of the "field" gives some decent lines to work. The initial course was probably passable, but things are in disrepair and whomever mows does not mow favorably for disc golf. The signage was odd, a small white square with the hole # in green was all it was, but if you were looking at the sign, you were pointed 180 degrees from the basket (the only exception to this being #7). Signage, tee pads, upkeep, fixing #2 and #4 are all things that would add here. It's just enough out of the way, that, honestly, I would only play if camping in the area, and not really consider it a round. One to skip folks, unless you really want to bag it.

Pros:

Using wooden spindles for basket bases was nice, keeps all the baskets same height.

Cons:

Have lots of room, could have made better usage of the land and put more trees into play.

Other Thoughts:

Thorn bushes need to be removed.
