Observe & Reserve Your Resolve At Preserve

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 4, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Anchored metal tee signs have all the expected info with a very helpful diagram.
+ DiscGolfPark baskets are visible at a distance and have those nice little built-in arrows to guide players along.
+ The course has a variety of wooded and open holes.
+ Benches all over the place for players' comfort.
+/- Long tee pads are wide and long turf anchored to a wooden frame, but...

Cons:

- ...those tend to be less robust than pavers or concrete, and the short tees are just rubber mats plopped onto the ground (as of December, 2022).
- Most of the course plays flat with distance serving as the most prevalent challenge.
-/+ $10 to play might or might not seem worth it depending on the type of challenge you are hoping for.

Other Thoughts:

Hole14 was my favorite to play here because it switches from an open field into tree-dodging partway through. My favorite hole to look at was hole11 because of its narrow pine tunnel. But my least favorite was right after it. Hole12 is almost 850 straight-forward feet of flat and wide open space with random OB to worry about for no reason. AND the sign says that it's a par4! What?

As for The Preserve as a whole, I didn't realize that this course partially plays within a Chistmas tree farm, and my first time here was a few days into December. There were families and employees walking all over the place, which made it impossible, or at least way too risky, for me to throw on some holes-- sixteen and seventeen in particular. I skipped hole17 because I didn't want to hit Little Timmy with a Roadrunner. So, don't do what I did. For best results, you should play here before Thanksgiving or after New Year's. And once you do get here, make sure you've got $10 on you.

After you pay, get your drivers ready because this place tests your distance/power more than any other skill. The aforementioned hole12 is the longest hole, but there are other lengthy testers like 4, 9, 15 and 17. If you don't have decent distance or steady patience, then this course may not seem worth the price of entry.
Wooded holes are present here, too. Along with hole11 you've got holes5 through 8 but they seem to serve as a brief break in between the longer holes. Still, I'm glad that they are there. They are nicely crafted with satisfying challenges of their own. A course that makes attempts at variety is preferable to a course that stays the same the whole time, right?

Actually, because this course passes through a Christmas tree farm, that means that some fairways are guaranteed to be different year over year. Holes1 through 3, 16 and 17 directly interact with the farm. A tree that blocked your throw one year might be cut down the next.

Beyond that, I can't say that there's much else to the course. It's a solid circuit of 18, even if it is largely flat and open. I will say that hole18 is a nice finale with its two ponds along a downsloping fairway. Plus, all of the infrastructure I expect to see at courses is present here. However, I can think of other courses out there that also occupy a Christmas tree farm that also charge $10 per round but contain a more robust and varied grab bag of features and hazards. Held side by side, The Preserve falters in comparison.

Is it worth a visit? Yes. I would say that most courses are. Just temper your expectations a little, prepare for a trial of distance and watch out for any Little Timmies.

Pennsylvania's Maple Hill? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Preserve at AGA Farm is a fantastic course on an amazing property. Well manicured grassy fairways weave their way around the working Christmas tree farm and pumpkin patch, as well as work their way into the woods that line the property.

Driving into the course I was not expecting much. I was not sure where to park, and the navigation to get to the first tee was a little confusing. However, once I found my way I knew this was the real deal. A 400+ foot par 3 that bends off to the right with nasty rough bordering that side of the fairway, you'll need an arm and some accuracy to attack this hole and most every other hole on the course.

Every hole has a singular pin location as far as I know, with a fairly new blue-banded Disc Golf Park basket and very nice turf tee pads. There were some shorter rubber tees on most if not all of the holes, but those are not the focus of the course. Long tees or bust here for sure.

I'm not sure if the course is always like this or if I caught it on a good day, but this course is maintained better than nearly any course I have ever seen, public or private. The grass was cut short, there was very little debris in the fairways and we rarely had to search for a disc in any of the rough our group found ourselves in. Whomever is taking care of this course is putting a lot of work into it, and it is greatly appreciated.

Being on a private course always has a different feel and is, in my opinion, so much better than playing at a public park. We had the course nearly to ourselves this morning, and we never had to wait for another group or some walkers that could be nearby. I would pay the ten dollars over and over again to get the same kind of treatment.

There are some special holes here, but I'll name two that come to mind. Hole 4 is a par 4 that plays from the woods, back into the open, and then back into a secluded green with logs blocking the left and right side rough. It's a picturesque green and a challenging two-shot hole. The second hole and my personal favorite is 17, which plays very long for a par 4 at almost 800 feet , and requires two absolute beauts to deliver a chance at birdie. You throw down a gauntlet of young pines before approaching a rocky green, and pictures don't do this hole justice so you will just have to see it for yourself.

Cons:

There are a few things that keep me from putting The Preserve at the tippy top of my list, but that does not mean it's not great. I believe it will continue to improve as the years go on, and I hope to return someday soon.

Navigation on this course is not always the easiest, and we relied on the Udisc map a few time to get us around. There were not many long walks or anything horribly wrong in this department though.

The OBs were not well-marked in all places, and we had to make some judgement calls. The tee signs show about where it is supposed to be, but the lines were not always there. These areas were mostly the spots where crops would normally be, but not very much was grown in so it was hard to tell where the area of play stopped, and the farm started.

Singular tee and basket location make for a lack of variety in layouts. A decent number of holes don't need to add anything because they are already great, but I could see it getting even better and harder with some new tees or basket spots.

There was not a lot of extreme elevation change on the course, which makes sense being on a farm and all. A lot of shots for me and I would assume a lot of shorter throwers were full drives, then throw an approach.

Other Thoughts:

In the coming years, I am interested to see where this course goes. With some added amenities and continued tweaks, it could rival the best courses not only in Pennsylvania, but on the East Coast. It's tough enough to challenge the pros, but enjoyable enough to make it worth stopping by for anyone. Come check it out if you are ever in the area!

The Preserve at AGA Farms 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 17, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Update from my 7/14/2020 visit: In preparation for the 2020 Lost Valley Open, new signage has been added to every hole. These signs are very clear in offering hole layout, direction, distance, and guidance to the following tee box. Some new benches have also been added at some tee boxes. 3 of us played the Blue tees and found conditions to be excellent. A couple of holes were reconfigured for the Open which offers additional fun challenges. The tee boxes are of good quality with the pro tees being concrete (I believe) with new Astroturf on top.
The shorter tees are rubber matts. Fairway conditions were dry and well groomed. This is a mixed course with some wooded holes and some long open fairways. A couple of ponds come into play on holes 1 and 18. some basket placements were made more interesting by being elevated or tucked into tighter approaches. This a very scenic locale that was challenging enough to warrant additional visits. I felt the greens fee was fair considering that everything was extremely well maintained.

Cons:

On some holes, it's wise to stay on the fairways because pumpkin patches can really hide errant discs. Not so much a "con", just a word to the unwary.

Other Thoughts:

Corn fields, rows of Christmas trees and other planted crops line several of the fairways. It adds a bit of charm to the experience. I plan to return to this fun and beautiful course many times. Love this place!

The Preserve DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Ideal T-pads and excellent prodigy baskets.
Well designed layout with long holes and variation.
Mix of woods, shrubbery and open grassy areas.
Water hazards.
Owner of course lives onsite and takes pride in maintaining course. Everyone we met was friendly, good vibe.
Some food and drink available onsite.
Disc golf cart friendly terrain.
Uncrowded.
Lost a Raider, but was found by property owner next day.

Cons:

Off the beaten path.
No permanent signage at the t-pads (yet).
Not a lot of elevation change.
pay to play ($10- unlimited play for day).
Could use another hole requiring a turn-over type shot.
The 1000' par 5 could use some obstacles, looks like a landing strip currently.
Not much infrastructure very nearby (gas, food).

Other Thoughts:

Two of us from SoCal came to PA for 2 days of disc golf in mid October. We planned to play Jordan Creek this day but it was closed for a bike event so we stumbled upon this location. It is very different than the other PA courses we visited and both of us had a great experience. The property owner showed us to the first tee and gave us plenty of information about the course and stories of Eagle McMahon heroics on the par 5. Although there were no signs on the t-pads, Udisc app worked just fine, and Discmania signage is coming soon. We visited on a Saturday and had the place to ourselves, playing the course 2x in appx 4.5 hours. In the cons, I mentioned need for a turn-over shot. There are plenty of dog-legs on this course but not many requiring a more gentle fade or turn through the obstacles.
There are some epic holes on this course (3,17 and 18 come to mind). You will be challenged with not only distance but have to throw a variety discs and shot types. Well worth the trip and $10.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Quality Prodigy T1 Targets.
Varied hole design making the most of the properties unique features.
Logical and relatively easy to follow layout.
Fantastic scenery.

Cons:

It's still a fresh course, there are no cons... rather items that will be addressed nearing its completion. The course markings and map will improve, the rough off the fairway will beat in a bit. It is hard to criticize the design of this course this early in in its infancy especially when it does so many things right.

Other Thoughts:

The Preserve is an insight into disc golf's future. This course has everything you need and is designed to test the mettle of the creme de la creme of players right now. The Par 66 layout is fantastically challenging offering you little room for respite but not being completely unattainable to the higher end of the amatuer field. You will need decent power to throw this course the course is long and you have to cover about 1000ft in one hole alone. My play through here took awhile but it succeeded in breaking me away from my phone and all my worries and give me hours of solid entertainment. I think 17 might have the most fantastic drive to throw out of any course I played yet (borderlining the greatness that is hole 18 on parkway). Overall this course has the potential for greatness I can't wait to see what the future brings and If you haven't yet.... get out here and see it for yourself!

Unique course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

On a christmas tree and pumpkin farm. Traveling through the patches of trees and pumpkins is really cool and something i never seen on a course. Beautiful land. Good variety of open and wooded holes. Crazy 1091 ft. par 5 on the side of the runway. Championship caliber course.

Cons:

THIS COURSE IS BRAND NEW SO IM SURE SOME OF THIS WILL CHANGE IN TIME. Rubber tees, though good quality cement would be better. No next tee signs yet. No permanent tee signs. A few times where you travel down other fairways. When they change things like this my rating will be higher.

Other Thoughts:

This course has alot of potential. Right now it has the essentials, (tee, fairway, basket). Im sure alot of work will be done in the new couple of years. This is a tough course, not for beginners. The christmas trees and pumkpins are an awesome touch to this experience. The owners/workers are very friendly and helpful. They were very helpful in making sure i made my way around the course smoothly.
