Bad/Homer Course Reviews

Agreed. I just checked my lifetime average review score: 2.75

But I am willing to die on this hill.
I'm newer to the reviewing side of things but my average review score currently is 2.92

Having designed a couple of courses myself, when reviewing them I give them a blanket 3.0 review score. It is not up to me to determine if the course is good or not. Whether I design Maple Hill or a Church 9er, it gets a 3 from me. I will let those who play it decide what it deserves from there. And I use the review text to explain what the course is, offers, limitations in design, plans to improve, target audience, and hurdles or blockades facing the course or preventing needed improvements (ie not allowed something like permanent basket placements, planting trees, or concrete tees, etc). It was the fairest way I could remove myself from the review process while still posting about the course.

I will, on occasion give a slightly inflated review score to a course with more flavor, some very unique aspects that make it more of a destination, a culture oasis of sorts (IE Oggwood in TN or Clover Cliff in Emporia) but usually only nets them an extra 0.5 above what the disc golf itself would rate.

Long live the dinosaurs! My average for my 192 reviews is 2.37, though I tend to prioritize writing reviews for courses that have few reviews, which means I'm written plenty of reviews for mediocre niners in the 1.0-1.5 range. :)

I just want to say that average review scores can be misleading, but not necessarily.

The way I see it, the entire purpose of reviews, ratings and pix is to help people select the courses they want to play (especially those away from your locale). For many, that's going to be higher rated courses.

As I make it make it out to more and more courses, I'm specifically trying to select better courses. So speaking for myself, if I were to review every course I played 🥴, my selection criteria should necessarily skew my average review rating higher.

I'd hope it would be something close to 3.5'ish
...at least if I'm choosing my courses correctly.

Understood. My 400+ reviews include a LOT of junk within a three and a half hour drive. I just played a "backyard" course yesterday with some shared fairways and baskets. But the trip was made by replaying a nearby course that expanded to 18 in the year since I first played it. I'm looking forward to revising the review and bumping it up from 2.0 to 3.5, and that's even before they finish installing the paver tees!

I really admire the effort to get courses into State Parks, but what the designer is describing here is not a 5...

I'm confused though. He gave course a perfect rating, but says they're still working on it to make it better? You can't make perfection more perfect.

I think this thread is a really bad look for DGCR and should be locked and/or landfilled. At the very least we should stop updating it by calling out people. @greens

LOL, Just because we harassed you when you did some UDisc reviews :p

I do like how the Vermont SP guy admits his review is bios.
I had to look it up, I have a 2.75 rating overall.

I do give out a lot of 3 to 4.5's if the course is decent, but I have zero problems rating 0-3 if the course is horrible or could have been designed better.

The elusive 5 is rare from me, I only give a course a 5 if I walk away from it impressed. Was it challenging but fair, does it serve it's purpose, the amenities.

I think 9 hole courses get a bad rap from most reviewers. It can be a fantastic 9 hole course and people only give it a 3 because it's only 9 holes. I find I tend to review 9 hole courses above the average and 18 hole courses below the average.

Tough grader! ;)

I also prefer to review courses that need reviews, or at least courses where I feel like I can add something new.

I have no such standards. ;)

Hence my 2.53 review average.

Maybe move it to vip so people have a place to bitch that's not visible to the general public?

Yeah I like that idea.

The person who wrote that review will likely never log in again, whether they click on this thread or not.

Even so many others can see it, as Chunky said it's visible to the general public. I know that in the past when I've thought about joining a club or a Facebook group or a Redditt discussion I've read what's there and decided whether or not it's something that's worth my time or I would want to be a part of. If you're thinking of joining DGCR and want to write reviews, finding a thread where people talk shit about other people's reviews isn't exactly welcoming.

LULZ on me, haha you got me there. :ROFLMAO:

Personally, I think when these inflated review scores get critiqued in here, most of the time it is fully explained why the score is inflated. If I was new to the site it wouldn't be a turnoff to me, but I'm sure it doesn't score any points with the reviewer.

6 out of 5 stars?

@johnrhouck If anyone can pull this off, it's you.

Not to put any pressure on you, but yeah, I'm waiting for a 6 out of 5 rated courses by Houck Design. 😐

Kidding aside, may your holiday season bring you as much enjoyment as your course designs have brought me! 😉

Thanks, Dwayne. I appreciate that. (I don't publish the reviews I write of my own courses, but there are several that are 7 or 8 out of 5.) Merry Christmas and Happy Whatever-You-Celebrate to all.
