Disc Golf in the News

The thought has crossed my mind more than once when playing alone at a remote course.
I've never felt threatened, but thought what an easy mark I'd be.

Since I play alone most of the time, I do take some precautions:
My wife has asked me to text her where I go, so "she knows where to send the police if I don't come back". :)
I try not to go to sketchy areas. Been pretty lucky so far that I can sort those out.
I keep pepper spray in my bag. If I'm a little uncomfortable on a course, I'll put it in my handiest pocket. Probably wouldn't pull it if I'm facing a gun, but a knife, thugs or wild animal, I'm probably gonna use it. You just don't know what someone (or animal) is going to do, even if you comply.

I never evened thought about "Wow, what an easy mark I'd be."

I don't have data to support my statement, but I strongly suspect most murder victims know their killer, and random murder victims are pretty rare.

I figure my chances of getting killed on the drive to the course are quite a bit higher than getting killed at the course.

That said, might not be a bad idea to keep some mace/bear spray in your bag in case you cross paths with a bear or other dangerous animal.

Fenwick, White River, Seatac...play alone at your own risk.
Hehe, I've never felt too endangered at Seatac or White River, though I've worried about my car possibly being broken into at White River. The worst experience I had at Seatac was walking up on a guy wanking on one of the benches. That was more awkward than anything--no shots fired at least!

I did get heckled by teenagers cutting class at Lakewood though, that was maybe the worst I've had.

Exactly. The most trouble I've had at Lakewood is oblivious kids walking across fairways. Irritating, but far from troubling

Mineral Pings Springs, OTHO, always seems to have something weird going on even though it's in a nice neighborhood

The supposed problems at SeaTac seemed way overblown the times I played there. I think I even played at dusk once but I might be mixing up with another course.

The "roughness" of a neighborhood is very subjective and based on personal experience. What my wife considers a rough neighborhood barely overlaps with my definition.

I tend to take those type of characterizations with a big grain of salt, unless I know the speaker's background.

Too true.

So far the only place I've been that was as bad as people say it was is a couple block radius of downtown PDX.

White River and SeaTac? They're fine, especially SeaTac
Your car is always at risk at WR it seems. I've never heard of anyone being physically attacked though. Its been a while since the incident but a buddy was attacked and robbed of his bag at Seatac by three thugs on pocket bikes. There's been plenty of car prowls there over the years also. That neighborhood has always been sketch but what a great course.

Whoa crazy. Even though Fenwick is relatively close by, I've only played it a couple times. I always had kind of an icky feeling about it.

Yeah I only played Fenwick a few times as well and always had that feeling too.

Pretty much. I've seen some crazy chit at Seatac over the years!

... And I apologized for that! :ROFLMAO:

Seriously though I saw something similar - it was two homeless people going at it off the fairway for the old hole 15.

Some guy asked me once if I had some score or something like that can't remember the exact phrase but when I said I didn't know what he was talking about he got super mad and started cursing at me. Heard people talking to themselves and/or imaginary people. All sorts of other stories from Seatac over the years.

I always carried my concealed firearm when I played Seatac alone.

The only time I almost got into a fight on a disc golf course was at North Park AKA Mineral Springs.

The supposed problems at SeaTac seemed way overblown the times I played there. I think I even played at dusk once but I might be mixing up with another course.

Seatac is wild man at least when I was playing there a lot in the 2010-2016 time, no idea what it's like today.

My sister had her car broken into twice at Seatac. She's only played there maybe 5 times.

Sorry but I'm glad I moved out of Seattle and into rural Idaho where there are few meth heads, few instances of crime, few if any homeless, and everyone has a gun and everyone knows everyone has a gun. Just my opinion on my experience not trying to fan the flames of some political thread drift, if it happens don't blame me.

I hope this isn't becoming a trend...

Body found in Seattle's Mineral Springs Park This was only a few months ago.The only thing in Mineral Springs Park is a 18 hole disc golf course crammed into about 6 acres, and some homeless dudes. I call it Urinal Springs. 🤷‍♂️

It's murder dude, it's robbery/mugging.
