Edit: Plans have totally changed, see posts below for updates.

Following the crowds heading south, we are planning a late February van trip from Maryland to Dauphin Island and back. Disc golf is not the primary purpose of the trip, but I hope to squeeze in a course or two most days. We will be traveling with the dogs, as usual.

Here is the tentative itinerary (probably wildly ambitious). Please feel free to critique, throw rocks, or suggest your favorite BBQ joints or taco trucks along the way. :)

Day 1: MD to Raleigh
Confluence Creek (nr)
Crossroads DGC (2.00) (9)

Day 2: Raleigh to Santee SC
Rock Ridge Park (4.18)
Reservoir Park (3.33)

Day 3: Santee to Savannah
Tom Triplett (3.90)
Thomas Park (1.00) (7)

Day 4: Savannah to Chattahoochee FL
Heritage Park & Gardens (2.89) (9)
Tom Brown Park (4.17)

Day 5: Chattahoochee to Dauphin Island
BirdieVille (nr) (9)
The LZ (nr)

Days 6 – 12: Dauphin Island AL
Hoping to sneak away for a 3-day road trip while we are on Dauphin Island:
D'Iberville Dog Park (nr) (9)
Brickyard Bayou (3.50)
Cheona Trails (5.00)
Eagles Landing (4.07)
Eagles Nest (3.50)
Paul B Johnson SP – Arctic Fox (2.94)
The Admiral (4.31)
Cottage Hill Park (3.04)

Day 13: Dauphin Island to Lithonia GA
Lagoon Park (3.5)
Tumble Tree (3.63)

Day 14: Lithonia to Columbia SC
Stoney Hill (4.41)
Crooked Creek Park (3.86)

Day 15: Columbia to Winston-Salem
Elon Park – Eager Beaver (3.16)
The Scrapyard (3.71)
Harrisburg Park (1.25) (9)

Day 16: Winston-Salem to MD
Black Widow DGC (4.56)
Neatman Creek (4.33)

Thoughts welcomed!

I would put Angry Beaver in front of Eager Beaver in Charlotte. Eager is a meh pitch and putt, while Angry is one of the top Charlotte courses. I don't think Angry is a ton more physical and should not take a lot longer.

Looks like a great trip, Monocacy

Thanks for the recommendation! Short but fun courses fit nicely into van trips. Mrs. Mono is very supportive of me flinging plastic into trees, and I would like to keep it that way. ;)

I do hope to take a solo bagging trip to Charlotte and the triangle, and hope to play Angry Beaver and many of the longer courses then.

Pretty ambitious.

And, by that I mean, planning for 15 days of decent weather in February, particularly since it's early Spring here in the south.

I'll be cautious on the BBQ, to not get myself drug into the BBQ Wars, but I will say that South Carolina, for a small state, has 3 very distinct BBQ regions, so it's possible to get variety in a few stops -- and, in the center of the state, a version you won't taste anywhere else.

Let me know when the dates are set, and I'll pencil you in for Stoney Hill.

Yep. Much easier to dial back an ambitious plan than to figure out new stuff on the fly.

For sure. If I manage to play 80% of those courses I'll be a happy camper. Literally.

Interesting 🤤

Will do, thank you very much!

Well that plan didn't last long.

Looks like we are going to skip Savannah, so the outbound trip will probably go through Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Hoping to hit Diavolo, North Georgia Canopy Tours, and a few of the shorter NC courses along the way. Details to be worked out.

Return trip shouldn't change much. Florida is the last state in the lower 48 to check off for van trips, so we will probably add a detour to Pensacola.

You'll love the Admiral just outside of Mobile. There are three tees to almost every hole and it's a classic John Houck style design. It'll remind you (a bit) of Seneca, with a little bit of water and not as much elevation change.

I see you have a bit of a route change, you'll probably end up going through Atlanta and Montgomery (I-85). Douglassville (Boundary Waters) is off I-20, but it's honestly not that far out of the way if you want to hit it up (3 courses on site, pick the one you like the best).

Seneca you say? 😁 Admiral is definitely on the list. We plan to stay at Dauphin Island for a week so I'm hoping to sneak away and hit The Admiral, Eagles Landing, and Cheona Trails.

Boundary Waters looks good, thanks for the recommendation!

whatever you do never skip out on Diavolo.

Thanks, Diavolo is one of the top targets for this trip. Unfortunately we have a thing in Raleigh so we might be pressed for time.

What would be the recommended Diavolo layout if we are trying to squeeze in a round before sunset?

FWIW -
Black Widow is screaming for another quality review. 21 reviews, and most of them are drive-by reviewers. Pretty sure @Cerealman and @pmay5 are the only regulars that have reviewed it, and they each gave it 3.5.

No knock on the owner. Genuinely seems like a great guy, who simply wants all the time, effort and money he's put into his course to be enjoyed and appreciated.

Maybe he's done quite a bit since they reviewed it.

Day 4:

re: Langley Pond

Today's post on Augusta Facebook page:

*****Langley Pond Info*****
Last week's meeting was canceled with the weather. I am meeting with the park tomorrow. FEMA is already on site.
Aiken County PRT staff has been super busy already. Majority of the holes have been cut and require some fine tuning. Others are still very involved. With some solid work days, with solid volunteer help, we should be able to get LP back in playable condition fairly quickly.
More information will come in the near future. I don't have details until the meeting but I do know that volunteer work days are coming soon.

Here's some inside information on several courses on your list:

Crossroads - pretty new, decent Niner. The tees weren't too good, unless they have been improved since I was there. All wooded holes, so there are lines you have to hit here. If Mrs. Mono is into thrifting, I understand the church as a real good thrift store, on site. Drop her there, play the course, and you will probably be done before she is. :D (Of course, that could cost you in the long run.)

Cedar Hills - 3rd oldest course in the state, and the last one installed by Raleigh P&R, 42 years ago! 😤 Was used for the Tim Selinske Masters in Sept, mostly wooded with a couple of open holes. Good Raleigh course.

Diavolo - if you can fit it in, you won't be disappointed. The signature hole #9 is worth it alone. Course is made up of two 11 hole loops, the "back" or second loop is longer and takes longer to play. You could play the "Fusion" course, which combines 2 Par 3s into one Par 4 hole at 3 places, that will save you some time. If you are running out of daylight, there are several places on the back where you can cut off holes, then play #22 back to the lot. You just have to play "most of the holes" for it to count. ;)

Olive Baptist - pretty good church Niner, just a couple of minutes off of I-10. Mostly open holes, so a quick play. Restaurants and fuel right there also, so a good stop.

Black Widow - yes, with the recent reviews, I can see why you want to play it. About the first 5 or 6 were pretty rough when I was there, but after that, they get better. Plus, smileygrigg has a Tiki course right after #18. So bag 2 courses in one stop.

Horizon Park - just 10 mins away from BW. Oldest course in NC (if you are recording those) and you can tell it was built for throwing frisbees!! I think you can see 16 of the 18 baskets from the parking lot, so a quick 45 - 60 min. play, if its not crowded.

Neatman Creek - one of the best, new courses. Private course that require you fill in a DGS tee time request (in the Links and Files). I haven't played it yet, but the pics look great, pretty long and hilly, so probably a 2 hour play. I'm planning to play it this summer and get a first hand look.

Great tip!

Hurts to say it but unfortunately Diavolo may have to wait for another trip. I hope to do a solo bagging run from Raleigh to Charlotte, health willing and the creek don't rise.

Oh nice, I didn't realize there was a Tiki course, too.

I love those old Frisbee courses, and Horizon Park was not on my radar. Will definitely try to squeeze that in.

That's what I hear ;)

OK, I get the message. Assuming we can get out the door on time 🤔 I re-jiggered the first two days as follows:

Day 1:
Diavolo @ New Hope (4.37) UDisc world #21
Dragonfly DGC (1.5) 9

Day 2:
Crossroads DGC (2.00) 9
Cedar Hills Rotary Park (3.53)
Acorn Hill (nr)

Thanks to both of you for the nudge. :)

. . .

Thank you for the updates, David. Sadly, it seems unlikely that Langley Pond will be playable for this trip.

Boyd Pond looks fun, but adds a surprisingly long detour. So this is what I am thinking:

Day 3:
Stoney Hill (4.41) UDisc SC #1
USC Aiken (2.00) 9
Breezy Hill DGC (nr) 9

A couple of short woodsy niners might just hit the spot.

David, I think you jinxed the weather. Current forecast is rain or showers for the first few days. 🌧️🥺

. . . runs off to add waterproof boots, an umbrella, and lots of towels to the packing list
