Out 'n' Back Family Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nine holes were all they could squeeze into this sliver of parkland between the main boulevard and the rail line, about 1/4 mile north of the little zoo's walls (turn in around 14ht street, and you can park on the west side of the park as soon as you see the practice basket and the excellent map at the course kiosk). The map will give you much more information than the meager UDisc version on here (though that will suffice for course flow), including mandos (usually left of marked trees) and alternate basket positions (seldom used: the excellent, orange DGA baskets are usually left in the 'longs'), which are not always mentioned on the otherwise excellent tee signs (one just to the right of the well-executed, sufficiently large, level, concrete tees.

Obviously a recreational level course, with a lot of holes in the mid-200's foot range, you still may opt to stay with mid-ranges and putters to practice control, as many holes angle across the park strip (that's less than 200' wide), and are bordered by park fencing or by the mini-railway line that should be avoided, running down the eastern edge of the park. The feature green of this otherwise flat course is the mutually used basket that suffices for both holes 3 and 7. They found a washout/swale that actually dips three or four feet around that basket (and has a bridge for when it is flowing), creating some rollaway potential for your approaches and putts. Since hole seven is also the longest hole (at 390'), this constitutes the 'signature hole' for the course.

Overall, the design constitutes an impressive effort to making this fun and safe, given the multi-use nature of the park, and they created as much challenge as they could, given the few trees around. So a good effort, and still worth a half hour to an hour for locals in Alomogordo to enjoy when they can't get aways to the much more challenging mountain courses to the east.

Cons:

Well, it's almost all flat, and you are in New Mexico, so you won't have much in the way of vegetation to create natural obstacles (I am personally against trying to use 'created' ones, especially if they might cause hazards to other park users), so don't expect challenge. There isn't enough room for distance shots, either, so if you play above the recreational level, this course won't cause you to break a sweat (so to speak). Otherwise, the course is exactly what you might expect from glancing at the map...

Other Thoughts:

This is my first course played in the true southwest, as we were here visiting family for the holidays. Even on a cool, late December morning, I marveled at the difference in humidity. In the midwest, you ned a towel in the morning, to wipe dew, frost, snow... Here, you need to remember to bring a water bottle to hydrate, even for a quick, 45 minute park course explore!

Pros:

There are baskets, grass, air.
That's it. Yep.

Cons:

It's just a slim park with no obstacles.
Picnickers.
LARPers.

Other Thoughts:

Just a place to throw if you need to get out of the car while heading to Ruidoso or El Paso.
