A Fantastic Elevation Change Experience in Michigan

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- two practice baskets
- very well maintained park which clearly has been improved over the years
- ample parking
- nice, visible red ringed Discraft Chainstar Pros
- dual concrete tees of average size
- good use of next tee indicators
- great incorporation of huge elevation changes
- high degree of difficulty with a variety of shot requirements
- combination of some more open holes with many wooded holes
- great nature experience with peaceful setting away from busy roads amidst mature trees
- lots of par 4s; goes beyond just difficult par 3s
- benches and garbage cans at all holes
- rough is pretty forgiving on most holes
- built in bridges over creek where in play

Cons:

- tee signs/posts are a bit lacking; no maps
- could argue course is almost too long; pro tees have some insanely long distances
- some built in stairs on some of the steeper slopes would be a nice improvement
- would be nice to incorporate the creek in the park into the holes more
- some navigation confusion between holes 17 and 18

Other Thoughts:

This course is clearly not well-known enough. ONE review up to this point? This course has progressed from a 9 hole, to a 13 hole, to the current 18 hole beast. You better be in shape when you come to this one. While there are a variety of hole lengths, the category largely missing is "short." There is tons of significant elevation change and long holes, coupled with plenty of tight, technical woods challenge. I'd recommend playing this one earlier in your day since it will wear you out, but what an incredible course this is to experience.

As a general note, the fee to enter the park is up to $11. This is put in a pay slot; there is no attendant at present. This is on the higher side for disc golf but is a standard fee to enter many state parks in Michigan.

This course is what I consider a "disc golf experience." It is just one course, but the nature immersion and unique qualities of the course stuck with me. It has Michigan's characteristic sandy soil I've seen at many courses, along with the black squirrels that are present in some of these northern states. The natural beauty is notable; even when the course pops out of the woods in some places, it plays over huge rolling hills. A few of my cons deal with the basic tee signs and steep slopes that are a bit treacherous without stairs. Honestly, seeing how this course has been expanded over the years, it's clear it's only going to get better. The maintenance here is excellent.

The equipment is also top notch outside of the tee signs. The baskets have triple layers of chains and catch very well. The dual tees are all concrete and in great shape. Sometimes pro tees just add 50 ft to a hole; I find this kind of mundane. This is not the case at Bald Mountain, with the long tees frequently adding significant distance (sometimes, perhaps a bit overkill) or incorporating different lines for variety. I played the short (red) tees and found the course very fun but plenty challenging. For the long tees, you're going to need a big arm, but it will be punishing if you don't have the accuracy to go with it. Fairways are not unfair, but they are a challenge. The rough was very forgiving which I was thankful for, but it's not a course I'd recommend unloading your bag on.

In general, navigation here was very straightforward and there was good incorporation of next tee signs. The only confusion for me was on hole 18; after hole 17, you have to go down the hill and start to cross the gravel parking lot. At this point you should see the sign directing you to hole 18, but another sign closer to 17's basket would be helpful. This isn't too big a deal though.

Overall, this course really checks all the boxes. I felt a big wow factor here, and while perhaps not in the top 10 courses I've played, Bald Mountain was a really cool experience. If you want to make a longer trip out of it, Camp Agawam nearby looks similarly awesome, but perhaps a bit rougher - I did not have time to make it. The main thing holding it back is just ok tee signs, but otherwise it's hard to find many cons. I strongly recommend making the trip if you are in the area. It feels like it's in the middle of nowhere, but this course really isn't far from the main Detroit metro. Highly recommend a visit to Blake's Cider nearby in Armada, MI if that interests you.

Great! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Long distance pro tee boxes, and shorter amateur boxes. Great use of the naturally hilly landscape, through the woods, makes for a challenging play.

Cons:

Still needs the second 9 holes to make it a full course. Stumps from trees and bushes left throughout the fairways making it hazardous.
