Beaver Dick Is Too Short!

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is located on a popular camp site, and the course is pretty much a disc golf only park which is nice. Located on one of the many Snake River forks with a not so busy highway adjacent. Lots of short holes, and a few longer ones mixed in, it's a great spot for 9 holes if you're out there camping with the family. Fairly flat, just moderate elevation but brought in wisely with a few that feel downhill at least. We were there on a Saturday afternoon and saw only people on the campsite which is apart from the course so no human obstacles. Seems like it only gets play from a few people a week and probably from course baggers or campers. This is a really funny course if you're into superclass - this little course challenges your Zephyrs and Hero 235's quite well, especially if you're big fan of rollers.

Cons:

The holes are fun and a few trees limbs and a drainage ditch come into play but overall just not enough length at beaver dick to challenge anything other than a putter for advanced players. A few holes are very open and little boring. Hole 1's fairway plays right through a gazebo which wasn't occupied when I played it but could be an issue if lots of campers/park users - would need to skip the hole entirely maybe.

Other Thoughts:

There are 2 other courses in Rexburg, this one being in the middle as far as my most likely to play again. I wouldn't go out of my way but if you're here or want to camp, this is worth at least 20 minutes of your time. Remember when you're camping at Beaver Dick: If the camper is a rockin' don't come a knockin'.

Short and quick but fun! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pleasant park-style recreational course featuring well-mown grass and good level baskets. This course is a quick, enjoyable spin with ample ace run opportunities.

Scattered trees in key locations require some shot shaping and provide welcome shade on sunny days. A few baskets are set near (presumably OB) park roads, requiring some control on drives or long putts.

Sturdy footbridges to cross drainage ditches where needed. Each hole has a tee sign with map (but see cons).

Cons:

Safety hazards are present on several holes. The basket for Hole 1 is directly behind a pavilion with picnic tables. Holes 3 (360') and 4 (140') have a moderately busy road all along the right side of the fairway. Hitting an oncoming car is quite possible if you don't wait for a break in traffic before throwing.

Course is mostly flat and relatively open.

Grass teepads.

Chance of disc loss on Hole 7, where throwing long right can find thick rough.

Some tee signs were weather-damaged and hard to read, but holes are short enough that this was not a practical problem.

Other Thoughts:

The park was named after Richard "Beaver Dick" Leigh, a legendary mountain man, explorer, and fur trapper. Sources differ on whether his nickname derived from his trapping prowess or his buckteeth.

Six of the nine holes ranging from 140' to 245' are listed as par 2. The three longer holes range from 270' to 360' and are listed as par 3. If you care about such things, scoring below course par will be reasonably challenging even for experienced players.

Fairly low chance of disc loss except for Hole 7 (see cons). Nice picnic pavilions in the park and recreational activities in the river next to the course.

No practice basket, benches, etc. Just a nice little rec park that would benefit from eliminating a few glaring safety hazards.

Beaver Dick Park and nearby Rexburg Nature Park are both quick 9-hole spings, making a short, pleasant detour from I-15 if you are north of Idaho Falls.

Overall I felt that Beaver Dick Park started out a little soft, but holes tightened up and the round built to a reasonably satisfying climax. The course is well trimmed but some may find the lack of length unsatisfying.
