Nice Nine

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 7, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Bennett is a small park 9 with a lot of personality. Nine concrete tees and nine blue DisCatchers in place. The course sign by the parking lot shows distances for every hole, might be worth a quick photo since there are no other signs on the course.

Elevation is the big feature here, 2 is way uphill through some tight woods, 3 has some brush right in front of the pin after going uphill all the way there, 6 goes down and back up, 8 is a par 4 that goes downhill to the right, then back uphill and to the left, then 9 is through gaps of trees with the basket hidden behind the downhill. I doubt they could have squeezed more elevation out of this course.

Wooded lines are great on the course. 2 is a tight right-finisher, 4's pin is set right behind a large tree in a very tricky spot to access, 5 has two lines to the pin through some very tight trees, and 8 is tight off the tee, leaves you with a landing zone, then back uphill there are a lot of trees to avoid on the way to the green. 6 has a ceiling to stay under off the tee, and two trees to stay between to get to the pin. Excellent hole.

Cons:

I've praised Hole 8 so much that I'll get its con out of the way, if played correctly the landing zone is on the green of Hole 1. Not sure if removing a few trees around the second corner is possible but it would alleviate this issue.

More safety issues: the tee of 2 is directly in the left line of 1, and the tee of 8 is right where a missed rhbh ace run on 7 would end up.

Hole 1 is a wide open flat nothing. And hole 7 isn't much better, but at least it's slightly downhill and the ace run is dangerous with the downhill behind the basket.

The bridges added across the creek on 2 and 8 are nice, but some dummkopf decided the one on two needed 3ft high side rails. Now, Hole 2 needs an uphill drive, so it isn't the worst thing ever, but it plays mind games with the tee shot.

From 3 to 4 is a long way. Not much that could've be done with the volleyball court in the way but still a con in any case.

Other Thoughts:

The parking area is a little small, but there are more spots up by the green of 8.

Bennett is a nice addition to an already growing disc golf area. Given proper care and adjustments it could certainly earn another half-disc to full disc from me. Definitely the best 9 in the Liberty area, and totally worth adding on to your stop at Bad Rock.

Tucked in Nicely

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bennett features a simple but challenging collection of holes winding up and down several hills, with unexpected turns at many corners. Tees and baskets are freshly installed, and the park in general is in great shape.

Most holes are moderately wooded, and they're all wooded in different ways. There are a few low ceilings (especially hole 6), chances for skip shots, depending on how you throw, several holes that you won't figure out where all the trees are until you've played them several times, and a little elevation change on nearly all of them.

Holes 8 and 9 are a truly excellent way to finish out the course. Hole 8 is a tight par 4 with lots of options for aggressive you can be, and hole 9 is downhill with a bunch of different gaps, and even a chance to go over the top with a grenade or something. Both holes have chances for amazing shots, rollaways if you mess up, and all sorts of fun overall. Hole 8 should have at least one mando left put on one of the trees to keep safety with holes 1 and 2.

What all this means is that even without a ton of distance, this course provides a lot of options and creative plays to try to get a low score. You can stick to the fundamentals and not try anything crazy, but a unique shot might sometimes be the right one, although it may be risky as well.

Cons:

A few holes are not good at all. Hole 1 has nothing going for it, and holes 3 and 7 are just open without a lot to get excited for (those two holes play back-to-back). Hole 3 also puts some backyards in potential danger. These three holes aren't terrible, but for being a third of the course, it's not great.

While there's variety in hole shape, there's not a lot of variety in hole distance. Most holes are around 270 feet, and even hole 8, the only par 4, isn't much longer. The holes themselves aren't bad, and the design of them was good, but I would have appreciated some super technical shorter holes, and then a few longer ones.

While hole 6 has a cool low ceiling, it has other problems. You can play a wide left-to-right shot across the road, completely taking the low ceiling out of the equation. It might be good if the tree was cut a bit to make the hole a little more fair. But it does mean you have to push the disc as high as possible and maybe get a skip up the hill to have a chance at the birdie.

Other Thoughts:

The parking lot by hole 1 is super small, and I hope it gets expanded a bit in the future. But if it's full, there are other parking lots in the park, as well as some residential streets in the area.

There's some opportunity for some additional pin placements, if such a thing was ever a consideration. A long pin on 2, a pin higher or lower on the hill on 8, or just about anything on 9 can be interesting. There's also some opportunity to change up holes by playing to alternate baskets, like playing hole 5 to hole 6's basket, or 9 to 1's basket.

I think this course is quite good, and it complements the wide array of niners already in Liberty. This is a good one to stop at if you like short-ish technical shots and a quick round overall.
