Needs upkeep 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging (? which might be a pro to some)
Mix of wooded and open holes

Cons:

There isn't even a sign telling you there is a course here, or what its name is.
Nothing tells you where to start or where the tees are.
Most of the tee areas are just blue boards that are half buried and covered with grass.
Most of them have a post next to them, with a number and a small map, but some of those are missing. Hole 7 (next to the restroom) has a pole but no map or number.
This makes it seem like hole 7 is hole 4. But hole 4-6 are hard to find and again, nothing tells you where they are.
The chains have orange arrows that should indicate where the next hole starts, but some of them are pointed wrong (one points out to the middle of the lake).
The rough in some parts is very rough, and hole 10 in particular is completely overgrown. If you go to the right on hole 1, you're in the lake.
Lots of rocks and hills to climb over, so this wouldn't be an easy walk for some people.
Hole 16 in particular is ridiculously long (over 700) but somehow only par 4.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1 starts next to the pier south of the parking lot. There is a marker on a post by the pier that is hard to see, but that is the only indication, and if you don't know, it's easy to miss. I would give this a better grade if things were kept better (mow the fairways; have a map at the start showing where everything is; mark the tees clearly; clear the tee boxes), but as it is I would say it is only for those who want a challenge.

Excellent Fun-Factor, Close To Being A Local Staple! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Birdie Hill is one of two 18-hole courses on the south end of Mosquito Creek Lake. If you include the 10-hole "Outflow" course, you have 46 holes of quality disc golf all within a walk of each other!

This course, located at the Lakeview Recreation Area, is really a blast to play!

+ The #1 thing that stands out about Birdie Hill is the design/fun-factor. Greg Garret does a great job at utilizing the water, elevation, and wooded area into an exciting 18-hole package.

+ There are a few holes that I would be happy to see at any course...

* #2 is a steep downhill dogleg to the left, playing at nearly 400 feet.

* #7 is one of five par 4's here, playing through several mature trees before cutting downhill and left to a hidden pin.

* Maybe this is recency bias speaking, but #9 feels like one of my favorite holes played to date. You have a choice to either go for the landing zone off the tee, or layup on the right side. A Ridge of rocks comes into play before finishing at a sweet guarded pin.

* Other enjoyable holes that come to mind are #11, #15, and #18.

+ I really like how the course flows into the woods multiple times, while offering more open breaks in between.

+ Despite most tees being natural (see cons), the bright blue kickboards are easy to spot. There are also large tee signs posts at every hole, along with orange directional indicators on each basket.

+ Permanent restrooms and plenty of parking on site. Benches and trash cans are located in a few spots throughout the course.

Cons:

There are really only a few things keeping Birdie Hill from being one of the best courses in Northeast Ohio.

- More permanent amenities would be a great addition. There are a few concrete tees mixed in on the back 9, but most holes feature natural tee pads. This can be troublesome, especially at a course like this that may not drain very well. Permanent tee signs would be nice as well.

- The upkeep of the wooded holes is below average. Lots of overgrowth on each side of a few fairways, with some trimming necessary in the fairways themselves. This is more of an issue on holes 4, 5, and 6.

- While many holes are great, there are a couple that I really didn't like.

* #14 has practically no fairway, with most lines being blocked by another tree at some point. The par reflects the difficulty, but there needs to be more clearing done for this to be a decent hole.

* #16 is a wide open 700-footer with no obstacles at all. I guess the stream on the left could come into play on an errant drive, but the hole itself is lackluster compared to the rest of the course.

- Could use a few small bridges, or even pallets, where water and mud seems to build up. This is mainly on the paths from hole-to-hole.

Other Thoughts:

With no pictures (until today), and only two reviews, Birdie Hill peaked my interest due to the mystery factor.

I found it to be very enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the area.

Once concrete tees are fully installed, and some extra clearing and maintenance is done, Birdie Hill could solidify itself as one of the best courses Northeast Ohio has to offer!

Birdie Style 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

~Nice park setting near Mosquito Lake
~Excellent mix of holes, great variety
~Decent flow with solid navigation
~Open holes intertwined with wooded ones
~Close proximity to Squirrel Run DGC

Cons:

~Natural tees are rough in spots, concrete would be a huge upgrade
~Areas of potential overlap with adjacent holes
~Wooded holes have lots of tripping potential, needs beat in a bit more

Other Thoughts:

Visited on a hot July day for a local C-Tier tournament in which Birdie Hill hosted the 1st round. Playing the course blind I was fortunate enough to have two card mates who were local and very helpful. The course is fairly new, and was in pristine shape for the event. Situated along the lake there is an ample parking lot with pavilion and restroom facilities near Hole 1.

Overall the best feature of this course is the great variety that is offered. It tends to play in grouping of holes that take you back and forth from the open and into the woods. The open holes provide some longer offerings and mostly play along grass and rock ridges in which elevation, wind, and choosing your landing zones are paramount in scoring well. The wooded holes are nicely carved out and encourage you to play controlled shots off the tee to keep your disc in play.

While there is no obvious wow factor, all 18 holes are smartly designed and well executed. It's a good course that compliments nearby Squirrel Run exceptionally well.

The biggest draw back is not having concrete tee pads. Due to the length on many of the holes, better tee areas would provide a huge benefit to the course. Navigation and flow are solid, there are a few spots where holes run along one another and could provide potential overlap with errant tosses, but it's nothing I consider unsafe or detracting. The wooded holes provide a great technical challenge. A few more years of play and foot traffic coupled with yearly pruning will allow these sections to wear in nicely.

It's a good course in a nice lake setting, worth the trip when coupled with nearby Squirrel Run for a great day of golf.

Lots of Bird (ies) out there 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

A total of 3 different Disc Golf courses and 38 challenging holes within a mile of each other and a total of 5 different DG courses and 65 challenging holes within 4 miles of each other (with Camping/nearby hotels available and the Kent State/Trumbull campus having 9 holes). I think that's very cool!!

This course surprised me in a good way. Granted the course needed mowed, but the holes flowed good, Each basket had a next tee sign pointing in the direction of the next hole and the course had a good blend of open and wooded holes (So no course map was needed).

Nice descriptive tee signs (that also showed on the tee sign where the next tee was)

I liked # 2 the best, I was talking to all the geese as I headed to hole # 1's tee pad, telling them to please move cause I'm coming your way on the next hole. But like all geese they ignored me, but to my surprise they had a good reason to ignore me cause they really weren't in the way. One tee's off from the top of the grassy ridge and with some wind coming off Ohio's 2nd largest inland lake, (Mosquito Creek Lake) the fairway flows downhill and it's just a neat hole.

Most of the holes we're of decent length for an advanced player.

Cons:

Grass tees/with blue foot boards.

Holes 4- 6 are in the woods, keep a keen eye of your throws cause off the narrow foot paths the grass/ground cover is very dense. Cool holes, but I don't like to be hindered while playing because there isn't much of a cut/mowed fairway!

can get soupy after a heavy rainfall.

Other Thoughts:

I also liked the various signs descripting different types of birds and plant life found in this area.

Restroom available, plenty of parking.
