At least its close to the Interstate

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 16, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are baskets and they are in pretty good shape.
Tee signs, not always accurate, but they do show where to throw from.
They actually mow the fairways on the open holes, unless the students play here often, I doubt this course gets a lot of rounds, surprising this is still done.
Except for #1, the holes are away campus buildings and activities.
Located just a couple of minutes off I-81 in the Shenandoah Valley. If fact, North bound, you can see the course and still have time to take the exit and return to the course.

Cons:

No tee pads, just grass areas marked by the tee signs, and several were uneven.
The grass on holes #2-#4 is pretty rough.
#2 does not follow the path on the tee sign, instead it is an almost impossible angle through a gap in the trees then another turn in the fairway. #3 is not much better, thick trees/bushes to go around off the tee.
#5 - one of the largest tree/brush piles I've ever seen is in the middle of the fairway, right in front of the basket. Yea, wasn't throwing close to that.
The tee areas on the open holes were on uneven, sloped ground.

Other Thoughts:

Probably the best part about Blue Ridge CC is its closeness to I-81, no more than 5 minutes off the nearest exit, and the first campus entrance you come to.
Unfortunately, with the long open holes, #6 - #8, its not a real quick play. But, there are some good holes:
#1 tees just off the entrance road and goes downhill, turning right, with woods and a creek down the right side.
#4 tees up near the Rec building, downhill into a low ceiling, wooded fairway. Tough to get one close here.
#9 finishes pretty well, teeing from a raised area, across a small valley to the basket on another small hill. A fun one to finish on.
So if you are looking to stretch your legs and bag a course, between Staunton and Harrisonburg, this course is a pretty easy one to get.

Nice 9 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 25, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- It has 9 holes now. I guess someone figured 4 holes was not enough.
- Very easy to get to and it's free.
- Lots of variety in tee shots; into trees or out of trees; uphill and downhill tee throws; and two par fours.
- Accurate distances on signs

Cons:

- You may have some trouble finding the next tee your first time out. But once you've got it, you've got it.
- No concrete tee boxes, just natural grass.
- In summer, I would imagine it gets a little brushy out there. An errant throw could mean a lost disc.

Other Thoughts:

It's a very enjoyable walk on a pretty campus. When you come into the main college entrance, the first tee is halfway down the drive on the left. You can park at the bottom of the hill and then come up the sidewalk to tee off. After you play 9, you will want to give it a shot again. There are several holes that you can find different strategies in how to play.

Don't Bother 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

New Disccatchers on 5-9 are the only good thing about this course.

Cons:

Hole 2 basket is not at the labeled spot.

The grass and weeds are way too tall. We lost a disc in some terrible weeds on 5(it's laid out well, they need to just maintain the rough better)

6, 7, and 8 are basically the same with slight elevation differences.

I would not bother going. We were desperate to play and this seemed okay since it was right off interstate on our way, but we regretted not paying attention to the other bad reviews.

Something to pass time between classes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

There isn't a lot to be said here, but I'll stretch for what I can.

Almost all the tees (1-3) have nice tee signs with par and distance info. Honestly I didn't expect to see signs at all so that was nice I suppose.

Hole 2 is actually a really nice tunnel shot that I'd love to see on any other course. So, I guess you could say that 25% of the course is actually "good"

The baskets are Innova DISCatchers, which I always enjoy. At least if you go play here you won't have to play on dilapidated baskets.

Although there are only 4 holes, there are 5 baskets. Not sure if that's a pro or a con, but will at least give you another basket to play safari golf with.

Cons:

Firstly, there was some kind of weird construction tape around the parking lot and hole 1. Not sure how common that is but it was odd.

There aren't any tee pads or makers whatsoever. You'll find a tee sign on holes 1-3, but after that you're on your own.

Like I mentioned above, I couldn't find hole 4's tee sign. I also noticed a basket labeled "5" but no tee pad for that one either. After hole 3, I just played safari golf for the final 2 holes.

Other Thoughts:

Don't drive out of the way to play here. It's pretty easy, uninspiring and extremely short. It's right off of I-81 and is an easy pick-up for course-hunters.

Really, the only reason this course likely exists is for students to goof off during breaks. If it weren't for hole 2's beauty and the fact that the baskets are in great shape, I would have given it a 0.0.

Get it in now, might no be there much longer. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-It's a course...
-It had nice fairly new Discatchers.
-The tee signs showed the Footage and Par
-Hole 1 started out pretty nice
-The course sits on a small but beautiful campus
-The land that they have to work with has some elevation

Cons:

Where do I begin

- Only 4 holes
- No "Fair"ways on holes 2 and 3 (at least in the summer time)
- Almost no trimming of the vegetation
- Poor design
- NO TEEBOXES... it was pick a spot near the sign and throw
- Basket for #4 was missing
- Roped off area on 4's fairway
- Hole 2 was just plain stupid in it's design
- Didn't use the land to the full potential
- Tee signs didn't show pictures (except 1's that showed the map of the course)

Other Thoughts:

So much more potential can go into this small piece of land. If I were you I'd try to Safari rather than play the actual course. If you want might as well tee off from the bench on 2. There was minor construction around, so I'm thinking that the course may not be there much longer.

25% Reduction 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Room to expand - gentling rolling open land, occasional tree.

Cons:

Only four holes, of which:

* The open space where basket-4 normally sits was being used as overflow parking, so the basket had been replaced by a pylon.

* Hole-2 was ridiculous - only ~240', but impregnable branches/trees at the midpoint, and no realistic alternative lines.

Other Thoughts:

Number-1 is an open, up-slope, ~250' hole.

Number-2 - see above.

Number-3 is a right-turner, flat, ~220' hole.

Number-4 is an open, down-slope, ~280' hole.

Teesign-2 attached to bench; teesign-4 attached to gazebo.

Serious course-baggers only.

Pros:

-Its free and well maintained

-only about 10-15 minutes away from the Bridgewater course, sometimes I'll play this course once or twice as a warmup.
