cool land with good and bad holes

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 11, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-interesting topography with minor elevation, creeks, and lots of mature trees
-nice concrete tees, blue veteran baskets, fairly detailed signs, practice basket
-some fun holes that require accurate lines and angle control
-restrooms and pavilions next to the ample parking lot

Cons:

-i felt like the distances were shorter than listed on holes 1, 2, 3, & 7 and longer than listed on hole 9
-not a fan of mandos in general and i really didn't like them on holes 12 and 15
-speaking of hole 15, it sucks. hard.
-walking/running paths are potentially in play on most holes, picnic tables in play on some holes, fire pit in play on hole 12
-currently no bridge to cross the creek on hole 5 but it looks like prep has already started to build one

Other Thoughts:

Breckenridge Park is a huge 417 acre park with a bunch of sports fields and miles of walking trails. The disc golf course is at the south end of the park plays through an area with two creeks, many mature trees (throughout but particularly in the middle of the course), and mild elevation changes (primarily on the first 5 holes) but also heavily trafficked paved walking paths. The equipment is brand new and quality but the signs seem a bit off on the distances and line descriptions.

I liked the way the course starts off: slightly longer open holes with a creek in play parallel to the fairways which slope downward toward the creek. Whether it is your drive or your upshot, you need to control the landing angle so you don't roll down the hill, particularly on hole 2. Hole 4 plays away from the creek, slightly uphill but with a low ceiling. Then hole 5 (one of the standouts, i thought) throws slightly downhill crossing the walking path and creek to a small peninsula with a tree line and then a creek behind the basket.

Mandos start to come into the picture on hole 8 and this is where I began questioning a number of the design choices. In this case I guess it's trying to keep drives out of hole 7's fairway but I couldn't help but think a different tee position and maybe a different basket position would be a better solution. Then hole 9 is around 450' completely wide open. Hole 12 has a weird mando and weird fairway but a cool green area with curved trees. Hole 13 has a fire pit, a walking path, and a picnic table with a grill in the fairway. Hole 15 is a stupid little mando left to right. Hole 18 has 500' of open field before you get the interesting tree-protected green, narrowing between an OB path and a building. It's easy to say "I would have done it differently and it would be better" but I really think this land has the potential for a much better back 9.

I'm not sure if this course is trying to be a pretty tough white level course or a fairly easy blue level course. I'm curious if the future holds some alternate tees and/or basket positions. It's a good course as it is but I think the land is better than the course. This part of town has a dearth of good course so it's nice to see this one in the ground but I have to disagree with the assessment that it is a standout course in DFW. It's fun and I will be back for sure but it's not on my short list.
