Oh won't you please take me home!

Pros:

Take me down to the Garden City where the weeds are green and the scenery pretty! Couldn't help my self, sorry not sorry. Perhaps my attempt at a Guns N Roses tie in deserves to be in the cons section. :)

BAP is a multiuse facility on the top of a large hill/mountain overlooking the highway, small town of Garden CIty, and the beautiful Bear lake and surrounding mountains. One of the more pretty views from a course.

The course features all short holes, we're talking everything under 250 feet but what this course lacks in length it somewhat makes up for in elevation change. The course starts by making you throw zig zag across the hill at the top until you reach bottom and then the back nine has you go back up but on the other hill (which has nicer footing) and you continue to throw up the hill then down then up then down, etc. you get the idea. The up and downhill aspect of the course adds to what would other wise be a boring open course but trying to control distance even on short holes is fun.

The course is very easy to navigate as most tee pads are visible from the previous basket. The baskets are older model DGA's with double chains and are in good shape. Tee signs are present but small.

Cons:

The holes are tedious/monotonous with all of the zigzag across the hill on the front and throwing up the large hill only to throw back down and then up again over and over. The shots are pretty much the same over and over. I really don't want to walk across an ankle breaking hill over and over with roots, sticks, rocks, holes etc. on it and I don't want to walk and play up and down a hill many times over like the back nine even if the terrain gets easier to walk on. At 6,000 feet in elevation, no shade, and on a hot day my desire to keep playing was going down more and more as the round let on. I felt unnecessarily tired and it was the design's fault. OK maybe I'm 20 pound over weight too, sue me.

This is another victim of the magic number philosophy where we decide to fit the pre determined amount of holes (18 in this case, sometimes 9 or multiples of 3 on other courses) on this small piece of property instead of letting the property determine how many GOOD holes can fit here. I'd much rather play 7 good holes then play 18 bad to average holes and that's what you have here, shame. They could have reduced the number of holes to under nine and it would be an improvement in my opinion. You could throw from hole 3's tee pad to hole 9's basket and remove the rest of the holes in between and have a very fun, medium downhill throw. Same thing on the other side, remove most of the holes throwing up and down over and over and just have one up and one down, one crossing.

I'm not sure who they are trying to cater to here. I mean all of the holes are under 250 and reachable for anyone who's been playing for like a month and yet this is NOT a beginner friendly or family friendly course unless you hate your friends and family.

The tee pads are these little cement blocks and most of them are broken, crooked, uneven or some other issue. They are not very safe to throw from and the dirt is much easier as a tee pad here.

Other Thoughts:

This could have been the best under 9 hole course I've ever played. If this place had 5-7 holes it would be much easier to walk and play multiple times as well be more fun and challenging and not destroy your ankles or knees. I was here on a Sunday morning and this place looked deserted. They have other cool stuff here though like a big slide, ropes courses, and amphitheater. I found the mini golf course and there were balls and putters nearby so after coming down the hill for the millionth time I decided to play 18 mini golf holes. Sadly the greens are ROUGH and in need of bad repair, still it gave me a well needed break from walking up and down hills needlessly. I think if you skip half the course and play the safari way I somewhat outlined here it's a fun place, they just missed some potential IMO. Worth a quick stop I guess if you're in for a hill walking.

Great option in the valley 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes
Signs and tee pads
Elevation
Free to play
Restrooms and cafe on site
Loaner discs on site

Cons:

No clear fareways
A bit short
Some repetition in holes
Many tees and pins quite close to each other

Other Thoughts:

There is potential on this course. I think with a little design care there could be some improvements and this could be more excellent. As the only free course in the entire valley it's a great way to get your DG practice in while on vacation.
