If you want to see an angel, you got to find it where it fell. If you want to get to heaven, you got to raise a little hell.

Pros:

Roberts Park is the main park in a small rural community of about 2,000 people in the Ozarks. It holds a baseball field, tennis courts, pavilions, play systems and a 9-hole disc golf course. The park is well cared for and features several wood carvings of bears and other animals. The theme has carried over to the posts that the disc golf tee signs are on; they have hand-carved animals like owls and cardinals on them. It's a very cool feature.

Otherwise, the course is a beginner/recreational-level niner. The park has some elevation so there are a couple of fun elevated tee shots and variety to the holes. The hole distances don't get over 280' (and that is a downhill throw) so you can throw putters on most of the course if you choose. The baskets are Mach 5's in good shape, and the course flows well so it is easy to navigate (there is a walk from 9 back to the parking lot).

Cons:

Roberts Park had the usual small town issue of not having a park actually large enough for disc golf, so the course is sorta crammed in around other park uses. You throw over walking paths, you throw near play features, you throw next to backyards, you throw at a swing set, you throw over a basketball court, you throw at a pavilion, you throw at a baseball outfield fence. The danger is somewhat mitigated if you are throwing low-speed putters, but we all know disc golfers start by buying a Destroyer and throwing it on 110' holes. There really is no safe way to have the course in this park. Holes 5-6-7-8 are probably the worst; hole five shoots toward a pavilon, hole 6 has a swing set to the left of the fairway, hole 7 shoots over an outdoor basketball court, and hole 8's basket is close enough to a pavilion that I've hit the slab with my shot and been in C1 for my putt. It would be very hard to play this course with other park users present.

The tees are not really marked, you just pick somewhere by the tee sign and let 'er rip. The tee signs for the most part are just next to the last basket; it makes it easy to find your way around but it's not a safe design.

There are a few trees in the design on the early holes, but once you get past hole 3 the course is pretty open. The park really lacks enough natural obstacles for it to really pop out to me as being a lot of fun. The course does what it can with elevation, but the lack of trees really hurts the experience.

Other Thoughts:

The design of Roberts Park would be a big issue if it was in a suburban park in a large population center, but Cabool is an isolated rural town halfway between Rolla and West Plains i.e. it's halfway between nowhere and nowhere. There isn't any reason for anyone to be in Cabool unless you live in Cabool, and it gives those folks something to do. It's an OK recreational course with some fun shots and some really cool wood carvings on the tee sign posts, but it says something about a course when the highlight of it is the tee sign posts.

Nice new tee sign poles!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 17, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cabool Bulldog DGC is located at Roberts Park in the small town of Cabool. It's roughly an hour's drive south of Rolla in the Ozark Mountains of southern Missouri.

This is a short 9-hole layout that is most appropriate for beginners. Nothing is over 300' long, and several holes are shorter than 200'. The listed pars are beginner friendly too, with most of the holes >200' being par 4 or even 5. That's not to say it's completely devoid of challenge though. There are a couple of tree trunks to work around on some holes, plus rolling elevation change throughout the park that makes several holes more interesting. A couple of holes play next to/across a small creek, although it was completely dried up when I visited in mid October. Walking paths also play as OB, which could cost you a couple of strokes if you aren't careful (it did for me).

The tee signs are the highlight of this course. Or rather, to be more specific it's not the signs themselves. The signs themselves are little but nice - adequate for the course. The highlight is the wooden poles that these are mounted on. Each one has a painted, hand-carved wooden animal on the top of the sign. I thought these were very cool and gave the course a unique touch. They are apparently newish, since they weren't present when the tee photos here were taken (or when the previous review was written).

The baskets are DGAs that are painted blue. The park has trash cans, benches, and a restroom building - although the latter was closed when I visited.

Cons:

This is a multi-use park with lots of potential safety issues. Multiple walking paths, swing set, basketball court, playground, and the bathroom building are all in play on various holes. Most of these are at least line of sight, but #3 and 4 have some areas that are blind off the tee. Also, most tee areas are very close to the previous basket so while that eliminates the need for navigational signage, it means you'll need to wait for any other groups on the course to get a couple holes ahead before teeing off.

The tee pads are natural (varying between grass, dirt, and sidewalk).

Beginner level challenge only. I finished 7 down using the listed pars, and could have done better.

There is no practice basket or course map.

Other Thoughts:

It's worth mentioning that as of this writing, Google Maps incorrectly shows that Broadway Ave connects with Pine Ave. To reach the parking lot nearest to hole 1, follow the directions indicated on the Course Info tab (enter off of 2nd St to Broadway Ave).

Unless you are exploring the beautiful scenery of the Ozark Mountains as I was, this one will probably be well out of your way. I honestly enjoyed this fun beginner course as a way to stretch my legs for 30 mins while passing through the area on my way back to Rolla. However, I was lucky that there were only 1-2 other groups in the park when I visited. The safety issues keep my rating for this one firmly in the 1.0-1.5 range. No need for out-of-towners to make a point of stopping here, but it's a fun little round for locals if the park isn't busy. I hope to see tee sign posts like this again in the future!

Neglected

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good baskets. Clean park. Restrooms available. Good use of elevation.

Cons:

Signage is old and mostly missing. No tee pads at all. Had to guess where to tee on holes with no sign. Hole number 7 you have to throw over a basketball court. Kids were playing there and stopped so we could throw

Other Thoughts:

Some of the holes are fun but the course needs an update and some maintenence. With some TLC and a few changes this could be a solid 9 hole course

Putter challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful well manicured park with nice baskets and good signage. Bathrooms and water fountains. Played on a Sunday afternoon we were the only disc golfers there with a handful of other people bringing kids to the playground. Nice for a 3 disc or putter round. You could. make it more interesting with OBs and mandos. 2 rounds took less than an hour. Would be good for a glow round. Good stop on the way to Glass Blown Open!

Cons:

Some baskets are near the playground and paths. Some fairways cross each other. Neither of these were a problem on our rounds. Park is beautiful. The surrounding area isn't bad just a little run down.
