Canterbury Tales

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 30, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Canterbury Woods nailed the less is more approach. I could have seen some insisting on 9 holes rather than 6, which in turn would have ruined each holes quality. On a course of this ilk, 6 decent holes is far superior to 9 bad ones.
- Course has a good flow around the clubhouse. Teeing off on #1 in front of the flag poles in front to putting out on #6 right behind the same clubhouse, you have one simple loop around the limited space.
- #4 could be dropped onto just about any course in the state, and it would be a quality layout. From Pipeline to Crooked Creek: from SOAC to Socastee, this layout could easily be added and not feel out of place. There's a shallow creek bed that runs the left side of the hole and a basket tucked back behind trees & branches off to the right. It's not an intimidating shot because there isn't much penalty if you land in the creek bed other than potentially slipping on a wet/muddy slope. An enforced OB would add some challenge; otherwise, it's up to players to determine their own risk/reward factor on this 281 foot hole.
- A great place to play through two or three times. I played here once before heading over to Tidal Creek (I don't like calling it Fire Swamp), only to discover the gates locked there on the Friday two days before New Years. Had I known that, I would had definitely played multiple rounds here.
- #2 & 3 are fun shots as well. #2 requires players to shoot the gaps between a row of Crepe Myrtles on this 227-footer. The trees (obviously) are wider at the top. So, if you keep your shot low, there is a slight mound at and just beyond the trees, creating a skip shot effect. If you take that into account, you can park your tee shot. If you don't know about it beforehand, it can take a good looking tee shot and skip it 60 feet away.
- #3 is another narrow alley shot. It's only 202 feet. But the basket is protected on the right and above by a tree and on the left by a row of bushes. A low, straight shot will let you have an easy birdie chance. But if you're wanting to ace the shortest hole on the course, you may have to get creative. Another simple, fun hole.

Cons:

#1 may not always be playable. You're throwing over the edge of the parking lot. If cars park here, need to skip this one.
- #5 & 6 overlap. Also, this area seems to be popular for people walking their dogs. As in, the only two people I encountered were walking their dogs, one of which was in no hurry to get out of my way despite having ample grass all around plus sidewalks and roads to walk on rather than taking his sweet getting out of #5's fairway. Not that I noticed.
- Dirt tee pads. It's fine for what it is.
- As mentioned above, the small slope leading to the creek can be very slick.
- Tees are marked by pavers. If you're not using the app, may be walking around an extra 30 seconds trying to find the tees for #1 & 3. Others are all common sense (as in 'let me walk in a straight line past the basket and see the next tee marker there') and/or easy to spot.
- Not sure about the course's access for the public. The course was listed on UDisc with no restrictions mentioned or special searches required. It was out there in the open. But, when I asked about the course on the local club's FB page, the initial reaction (albeit from a small sample size) was, 'what course is that?'

Other Thoughts:

This is a perfectly decent six hole course. I usually believe anything under 9 holes is more of a 'practice area' than a true semblance of a course. Canterbury Woods nails the idea of an actual six hole course.
- Would I recommend anyone driving out of their way to simply play here? No. It's only six holes. Would I recommend anyone making a slight detour from West Ashley Park to bag another short course? Yes.
- I played this carrying only a putter and a mid. Only on #5 – at 308 feet – did I need anything with more distance.
- Being only six holes, this would be a good course to being throwing multiple discs off every tee. Also, any ace here does require a good shot. None of those wide-open, 100 – 125 soft toss shots.
- I'm guessing the power company disallows any baskets installed in the field left of the creek on #4. You could easily put in three more holes to create a true 9 were it allowed, while not ruining too much of the course's vibe.
- Looking through all my records, of the 30+ sub 9-hole layouts (eight or less to the layperson), this would be one of the two best courses in that category.
